- The Someshwara temple (also spelt Someshvara or Somesvara), situated in Kolar town of Karnataka state, India, is an ornate 14th century Vijayanagara era Dravidian style construction. Someshwara, another name for the Hindu god Shiva is the presiding deity in the temple. [1] The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance.[2]
The Someshwara Temple in Kolar is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is an ornate, 14th-century temple of national importance. The Dravidian style architecture is observed here especially through the tall, detailed brick and stucco structure that is placed over the entrance to the temple. This is known to be a richer, more detailed version of the Someswar temple in Bengaluru.
The temple is carefully, exquisitely carved and is embellished with decorative mouldings of important symbols and animals
Kolar is located 68 km from the city of Bangalore, on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway. Kolar boasts of a rich history with the fortresses and temples built under the reign of several dynasties. The temple was built by the Cholas who ruled this region in the 11th century who were then dethroned by the Chalukyas.
