I'm so perplexed as to how this happened. Google used to be that company that embraced throwing money away in the name of pioneering in the long-term. That's part of the reason why they gained such a huge following; they were a huge corporation yes, but they had the mindset of a young ambitious startup. Fast forward to today, and Stadia is the clearest example of how drastically Google's company culture has changed for the worst. They want to be taken seriously as a business with these huge ambitious projects, but they also want the same level of forgiveness that they received 5-10 years ago. And that's not gonna fly. This flop is completely inexcusable, especially by a trillion dollar company with hundreds of billions in cash on hand. The worst part is that it's not even a surprise. We've seen this many times before from Google, just at a much smaller scale. The only thing that makes sense to me is Eric Schmidt not heading Google anymore. Ever since Sundar Pichai took over as CEO, Google has become more and more of a lifeless corporation. And it's such a shame.
Honestly, as a programmer, the idea that big companies can do anything if they just hire enough programmers is pretty common. It's often pretty wrong, but the mentality is pretty common.
Okay, I really gotta make a point here. Game production is way more than art and technology. The third pillar is game design which is just as essential as the other 2. The concept of the game. How the game mechanics work. How the player engages with the game and the game guides them through whatever story and gameplay is involved. Everything from UI to combat mechanics, to world states, to story, to how the world and mechanics can be shown together through moment to moment gameplay. Like with Starcraft and how each of the 3 races have very distinct play styles showing lore and personality of the race with how they expand and operate. Game design is so intricate and crucial it’s somewhat mind blowing how deep it can go. I highly recommend Yahtzee’s dev diaries for snippets.

My family got three stadia controllers for free and I can honestly say there was nothing in the library that appealed enough to purchase on the Stadia platform rather than Steam. The hardware itself was decent though the software was lacking. Quite why Google wouldn't publish the Stadia app for Android TV is a mind boggler. Google desperately needed it's own multilayer content aimed at different age groups. All it would have taken for us as a family to use it would have been a handful of Roblox style games like Piggy, Tower Defense etc.. I think having their own game dev studio was the only way they could succeed over existing platforms, and they foolishly shut it down. Maybe Indi devs could have helped with exclusives, that is, if they would be prepared to risk having their account randomly locked.
Did you actually expect Google to do anything right? They are literally EA just in actual IT, instead of games. It’s Amazing how Phil Harrison fuck up three generations of consoles.

7:41 YongYea: "Artists need room to breathe." As a documentary filmmaker, this is absolutely true! Artists like filmmakers, writers, and game devs need the *time* and space to produce their work. Google expecting AAA games lickety-split were in for a rude awakening. Among other things, with so many people who are stuck with subpar ISPs or no fixed broadband in their house, streaming all your games is a recipe for disaster.
Stadia never should have been positioned as a console. Because of that decision, it was built wrong from the start. A cloud gaming platform can and should run a ton of PC games PERFECTLY at launch. The fact that any PC games needed to be ported to Stadia is one of the biggest reasons for its failure. See GeForce Now for a much better example of how to be a cloud gaming platform. What Google could have done with the money they saved porting PC games was get console exclusives ported. Make deals with Sony and Microsoft (Nintendo too if they would ever do it) to get console exclusives on their cloud platform. Free and easy dev tools would go a long way towards making sure that many future games are available on Stadia at launch. Unity support was a great step but even more needed to be done. A good cloud platform has a value proposition that consoles don't, and it's part of what Stadia was leaning on in adverts -- play anywhere on anything. Of course, Stadia dropped the ball on that too, but if they nailed that then they wouldn't have to be pressured to make any games themselves. People would build for that platform because it coexists with other platforms, rather than competing directly. For being the one company with the tech and the budget to make this work, it's a huge disappointment to see how little sense they have had on this front.
I'm software developer and I can definitely tell most of the trendy agile processes would not work well with game development. Having game as a live service is a horrible idea in most of the game genres.
When Stadia was first announced it was an interesting idea but I never thought this would jump off the way some people did. Really sucks for the employees they're the one truly getting screwed over.

I think anyone who invests in the hobby of videogames should understand the nature of platforms, exclusives, and stand behind their choices so they can build a collection of games and accessories that work together. Things like Controllers, Headsets, Subscriptions, their game collection itself, and playing where their friends are. It's foolish to think a new platform is a good choice unless that person is starting a game collection from scratch. After all these revelations, anyone sticking with Google Stadia just seems like they are desperately trying to justify the money already invested, and wasted on it. It's a platform with no future; slowly dying like Google Plus. Both Microsoft and Sony have game streaming plans, so why rush into the future when there is nothing unique or special on offer? Wait for the established players to bring game streaming if someone is hard set on gaming "on the go", otherwise enjoy one of the 3 gaming console companies with heritage, quality, and exclusives.
Also, the fact that a seemingly stable company such a Google gives the "Great progress" nod to its employees probably led the latter to take out a mortgage, buy a house, invest in their current work location in general, only to be told to eff off the week after, so it turns out Google as an employer can be as volatile as any other dumb startup
I don't understand why some gamers are rooting for game streaming to fail. Of course, it's an imperfect solution for some people due to data caps and unstable and/or slow connection, but game streaming would put an end to the constant cycle of hardware upgrade, making gaming more accessible and possibly cheaper. I'm all for that. Granted, it's obvious Google didn't have the right approach, but GeForce Now is promising and out of all the companies involved in game streaming, I think Microsoft will nail it with xCloud. It also wouldn't surprise me to learn that Valve is working on their own service (Steam Link 2.0, if you will).
What makes me mad about it is that we knew when it was announced that connections were going to be an issue. I doubt the whole model of a Netflix for video games. Bet they write the whole thing off as a tax lose... By design.. Not first time companies purposely invests in a projects to lose money.

Just to think, Google used to be innovators in the early 2000s. They provided services that helped cater to the average Internet users needs while making a profit. But now, just by looking at how Google has handled TH-cam, it pretty much tells you how they are handling their other services now. If it doesn't make money, they don't need it.
Hey! Fully agree with the business analysis side of things and the general evaluation. But for the technical side of things: Stadia actually worked excellently for me when I tried it Very low latency, and very stable picture quality. With GFN I get shinier graphics features and the much better model of being able to play games I already own on other plattforms, but much more noticeable lag spikes and drops in graphical quality. Could just be a fluke with server locations and stuff, but wanted to throw my few cents in. I played through input-sensitive games like Sekiro without any issues.
Once I saw that they felt they needed reggie watts for some weird commercials And that super annoying pretentious “stadia” chant I knew they had failed.
Considering I got a free stadia controller and Chromcast just for subscribing to TH-cam Premium I’m not so sure about the future prospects of Stadia...
I'm just surprised there's been so much bad news for Stadia in 1 month. Normally it's just 1 bit of bad news and there's about a 1-3 month gap before the next, giving everyone enough time to forget that Stadia even exists.
I had a feeling that this was doomed to fail from the beginning. I am surprised however, that it's survived this long. I thought it would've been dead in at least a month.

For those dev studios that are still independent.....remain independent, it's the only way that freedom of creativity can be had.... otherwise if you sell out to a publisher then you can kiss your creative freedom goodbye....and become just another gear of a decaying machine.
& it's sad how studios can't really escape the corporate model. Studios have tried other models, such as non-profits, but publishers aren't set up to handle things properly for a non-profit (back office stuff) so the sudios would just be turned away.

Stadia was a failure from the start. Any amount of lag in games is absolutely unacceptable. Lets get near instantaneous transmission of data working before we try stupid ideas like this again.
Stadia would work if the entire internet user-base was hooked up with fiber optics. Or if they'd grouped their user-base in close proximity to each other, like a large city, then it might have worked. A couple of decades ago I thought about what it would be like to hook up hundreds, maybe thousands, into the same gaming-session (Counter Strike: Source) on a mega-map. To keep these sessions short, it would require dead-is-dead game-plays.
@@NorseGraphic The Guinness record holder for most players in the same session is still Planetside 2, at a bit over 1k. The idea of Stadia was so bad and anti-consumer that I'm shocked Randy Pitchford didn't come up with it.
I can’t wait to watch the stadia documentary on the gaming historian channel.

Wait for the established players to bring game streaming if someone is hard set on gaming "on the go", otherwise enjoy one of the 3 gaming console companies with heritage, quality, and exclusives.
Pretty sure we all knew this project would fail.
Lets hope Google stays out of gaming from now on.
I don't understand why some gamers are rooting for game streaming to fail.
