    7:17 Note that this poll was conducted in 2020, right after Brexit, when people in the EU were still salty about Britain's decision to leave the union. Public opinion has shifted since then, especially over the last few months. Most people where I live have been deeply moved by the extent to which the UK (and other countries) has gone to help Ukraine, and, as a result, now have an overwhelmingly positive view of Britain. If the poll was conducted again, the results would look very different.

      @@alexfoster307 The map doesn't really relate a huge amount to how well countries like each other. Britain has, for some time, liked to portray itself as a strong, independent nation different from the rest of Europe, thus sending the message that it doesn't need help. Also, in all of Europe, the Brits are most likely to be negative about their own country, which is also selling a message that it's not worthwhile helping Britain. Finally Brexit sent a message that Britain doesn't even want to be part of Europe, especially with strong ties to other English speaking countries. 0:39 in recent years there is a LOT of immigrants from the middle east moving to sweden, way more than the usa, and roughly equaling the immigrant levels in canada. sweden only has 10.4 million people, so you can see why this is making swedish the dominent language learned in sweden.

    • @giantWario
      @giantWario 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Not only is it equal to the immigration level we have in Canada but more importantly, most immigrants in English Canada come from India, China, and the Philippines who are all taught English in school as a second language and most immigrants in Quebec come from France, Haiti, Algeria and Maroc so they all already speak french. So most of our immigrants don't actually need to learn any language. Meanwhile, except for the Finns, no immigrant in Sweden actually speak Swedish.

      @@giantWario I should have worded this better, what I met to say is immigrant levels in sweden are relative to canada in general, not singleing out on people in arabic regions. lots of these immigrants happen to be from the middle east. around 5.3% of the population of sweden was made of people who speak arabic in 2013, because of the syrian war, and I should also mention I forgot to talk about indian and pakistani immigrants going to sweden recently, and that they make up a substantial amount of the immigrants. I don't mean that the situation in canada is identical to the immigrant situation in sweden in every way. also thanks for telling me about the algerian and morrocan immigrants. The scandinavian countries have a very good level in english that they learn in school. So if you want to visit, you can talk to anyone in english without any language barrier. Hence they don't learn english on duolingo and prefer to learn another language, which happens to be spanish.

It was never really seen as anything more than an economic union here, but based on the reaction from the mainland I assume that it is slightly more symbolic. Going way back that both Greeks and Romans alike hated Carthaginians. Most know how Romans wiped Carthaginians, but don't know the first that defeated Carthaginians were us. Even after WWII, only Italians by themselves cared enough and came here to see how they can help while their own country had its problems too. Even as Constantinople was falling only an Italian with his army came for help and afterwards the Genovese gave us permission to live safely in Corsica. Such things Greeks don't forget. I disagree with the first one for the whole population, the UK's most common second language is French, in fact many schools in the UK don't even teach Spanish, only German or French (and sometimes they don't even do German). I assume the reason that Spanish is more common on duolingo is that most people who will use duolingo probably like languages (so they may already know french) or want it for travel purposes!

      Spanish is a language people learn casually a lot, for whatever reason. Perhaps because it's not a complicated as French or German. Plus there's lots of Brits who like to go to Spain or want to live in Spain, so I think while French/German is a language studied properly at school lots of people do a little bit of Spanish through alternative means, so Spanish becomes the biggest language on apps like Duolingo because people don't take lessons for it.

      @@DonVigaDeFierro I'm Brazilian and here we have almost half of the country covered by Amazon. The problem here is on reckless deforestation. We doesn't have proper desert areas, just semi-arid climate here and there in northeast region. The Amazon deforestation is disapproved by most Brazilians. There is a very important reason to keep forest up, not just by the uncountable richness of biodiversity, but also the forest works like a "water pump" throwing ocean humidity deeply into the continent. This why most south America looks green at satellite. If we stop chopping down the forest today, it will still have a territory like half of contiguous US of sunny wet grasslands capable to grow 3 or more crops yearly. We will feed half the world if we don't break our costless waterpump. But while the world is not properly starving (famine happens more due to logistics issues and inequality than lack production), we can keep biofuels working.
