Unexpected Discoveries in the Mountains of Utah

- UTAH PART FIVE: Having bypassed a few of my planned camping spots over the course of the week, I found myself with an entire extra day before it was time to meet up with the @BackroadExploration crew. No further routes planned, no remaining points of interest on the list, just a completely unplanned day. I had simply set out to explore when I heard the mountain calling my name.

The tin bowl you discovered is a relic of my past. In the 70's I worked as a grunt in the seismographing industry. We drilled 100 to 200ft holes with the same rigs you see drilling water wells today. We then screwed a number of dynamite sticks together, poked a blasting cap in and lowered the package into the hole tying the blasting cord to the tin bowls. That was the main reason for the tin bowls. Reason number two was to cover the hole so wildlife and livestock wouldn't stumble in the hole and break a leg. After the seismographing crew blew the dynamite and took readings there was a cleanup crew that followed to rake the shaving back into the hole and pick the tin bowls up. This one must have slipped by them. Lol Fun Stuff! Keep up the good work!
My grandad worked this same type of job on the southern border of Texas and the Louisiana coast in the 50’s and 60’s. Cool story about the tin bowls!
@@jarrodyeagerit was a busy industry and good wages back then. I mostly worked in eastern Montana and the western Dakotas.

The best part of Utah (in my opinion) is how suddenly the topography and geography changes. You can go from beautiful red rock and desert landscape to high alpine, pine and aspen forests. Utah is addicting so I’m sure you’ll be back. Consider checking out the Henry mountains outside of Hanksville. You’ll find beautiful dessert, mining operations and some of the most beautiful mountains Utah has to offer. It also has one of our only free roaming buffalo heard! Thanks for making these videos!

Great video Donald, I just got back from a Grand Canyon/Utah trip yesterday. Definitely wasn't what I expected. We camped in heavily Forested areas all 4 nights. Anways, at 2:17 I'm loving the "Rockcrawlingthewest" :P

I appreciate your calming demeanor. These videos help the world slow down a bit. I love to get in the car with only a vague idea of where I’ll end up when I travel out west, usually works out just fine. It’s amazing how much open land there is in Utah. The national parks are so packed, I’m glad I visited so many before the outrageous crush of people descended upon them. Always better to visit anytime other than summer. Love the shots out your windshield, feels like I’m right there exploring something new as well. Thanks again for your hard work in your editing and cinematography. You’re doing something great here, keep it up!

About 2' 30" in you're going up a trail onto a rock shelf and it looks like your 2" lift made a huge difference there. I'd never try to tackle that in my unlifted Colorado. Another great video - thanks for sharing it!
I was grateful for the lift on this trip. I didn't come close to filming all the rock steps and other crazy stuff I climbed over where the improved ground clearance and approach/breakover/departure angle made the difference.
This was a very enjoyable series, and I appreciate all the resources in time, planning and gas $$ you put into this one. Now I'm heading over to Backroad Exploration to catch the last few days.
You managed to have an awesome unplanned exploration day. That was some amazing scenery. Those deer looked more curious than anything else, rather than skittish. Gotta wonder what sort of traffic/visitors they're used to.

I did a 600 mile tour on my mountain bike in Utah TWICE that included a 12,400' pass that I rode over on the way out to Capital Reef National Park....rode up over that pass on my BIKE with 50lbs or so of gear and then got up to 50mph on my BIKE feathering the brakes on the way down into Torrey Utah. Three National Parks, Zion, Bryce, and Capital Reef in an out and back tour covering 600 miles in 2 weeks on a bike...only possible in Utah.
What an incredible ending to a beautiful and inspiring adventure. I feel truly blessed to have been able to play a part in it. The landscape here never ceases to amaze me. The fact we can go from where we were to those mountains in under 30 minutes is incredible.
I already can't wait to get back to Utah...so much more to explore!
One of the best things about my years in AZ was exploring all the hundreds of miles of dirt roads to look at all the old places.

Your videos are always amazing. Have you not been up the Steen Mts? Drivable up to 9600 ft, and also amazing scenery.
Can you believe, I have been right there at the foot of Steens at least four times, and each time, either snow or scheduling prevented me from making the trek up the mountain. It's there waiting for me someday!

Finally got a chance to stop and watch this. What a busy weekend. Happy 4th and thanks for sharing.
We were at 8500 on our last trip out. Makes for some great views, but for some reason we had a lot of haze in the area. We had some rain storms blow in in the late afternoon and cleared it all out. Luckily all that was finished just in time for life flight to show up later that night. But, that is another story. .

We just got back from 5 weeks of bucket list Southwest adventures! We explored 4 states and in all the locals said the brutal wind was setting records. We tent camp but not so much there. Our first night there in a small gorgeous red rock canyon on blm we had blasts of 50mph wind. We had to hold the tent together. It was crazy! In between blasts we scrambled to move our truck in front of our tent to block the wind. It worked well enough so we could get some sleep.
Goblin Valley was already on our to-do list when we saw your video on it and we loved that place. We kept running all around exploring. So cool. But, the high elevation severely limited our abilities. We live by Crow, near Eugene Oregon (where you live) and we are at 600 feet high so all that high desert and mountains in the Southwest was challenging for our bodies. Back home we can hike miles but the Southwest we’d be lucky to do 1/2 mile if even that!
We enjoy watching your adventures. Seeing your excitement about stuff, like rocks, is how we are so we really relate to your content. And though we explore the same types of areas it’s wonderful to see it through someone else’s perspective. So, thank you for sharing and maybe one of these days we’ll catch you out in the wilds.
Oh and Coyote Works was the first TH-cam channel we came across about these types of adventures. Casey’s love for that part of Oregon shines in his videos and inspired us to explore those areas too.

Utah does have some amazing mountains. You tend to think of Utah as a big desert from watching the offroad, Moab videos, .but Utah also has some of the best skiing in the lower 48 states. A huge contrast from desert to green meadows, forests, streams and lakes.
America’s great outdoors , feeling the draw , my father in his youth found this freedom to just go ! Our vacations to Colorado was the gift he gave us as kids

I've heard that if the Earth was the size of a ball bearing, it would be a more perfect sphere than the ball bearing. Talk about perspective!
There are great high passes in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, the most dramatic being Tioga Pass through the high country of Yosemite National Park, and even higher passes in the Rockies of Colorado, such as the incredibly beautiful Engineer Pass and nearby Oh! Point, which are part of the Alpine Loop through the San Juan Rockies. I've been to Mosquito Pass at over 13,000 feet from the Leadville side in my Subaru Forester. You should go when you can.
I really like your travels. I have a diesel Navara, pretty much the same as your Frontier. A pity you guy's dont get the diesel's in USA. They produce awesome power with great fuel consumption. Your canopy is interesting, I also find my load bed too short for me and I don't like a RTT so I use a quick pitch tent. I'd like to build a canopy somehow on your lines. Travel safe and stay well.

Love watching coyote works as well, especially since he is from where most of my family lives and has lived for a few generations going back to the early 1900's at least. Haven't seen much from him lately though. Oh and something something hey you found a new yogurt bowl, something something looks like a chicken feeder actually but kinda odd place for a hole though
And most recently the highest I have driven is about 9600 and that was going from Jackson, wy over to Casper ,wy on hwy 89/289 otherwise it's about around 11,000 when I was about 4-6 years old when living in Denver lol

The fan seals closed when not in use, so rain or dust cannot get in. It is far more dust-proof than even the back door of the canopy which does not seal perfectly. I do get dust in the back, but not from the fan. :-)

If you ever get down to the White Mountains in southeast California. At an altitude of around 9000/10,000 feet you encounter the Bristlecone pine trees. These stunted, little pine trees. One of the oldest living biological entities on earth. One of the trees down there was dated at 4,800 years old.
🤣🤣🤣Scott was telling us when we were camping he loves your cooking but that you always add mushrooms.
A fellow modern times famed explorer can be quoted with "Adventure is Afoot". Well describes this episode.

Unfortunately I don't have a link. I picked that up for suuuuper cheap a few years ago on a clearance rack at Walmart. It's their house brand and I think it's a discontinued item. I like it, though in person it does kinda look like it was made out of a moving blanket, LOL. :-)

TBH, I did that to mask a minor technical issue, but in some ways it overall looks better than my usual in-truck footage. Might have to keep experimenting with the idea.
How many miles are on your Frontier? Have the water pump or timing chains been replaced yet?
Hey Donald, do you think the Forrester would have been able to reach those same spots the Frontier did? Hoping to get a Subie soon.
I think the Forester could have done 97% of what I drove in Utah. There were a few spots where I think the much-smaller tires and the lack of low range gearing would have stopped my Subaru.

What part of the Utah mountains is this. There is a 19 year old man (Aidan Clune) went missing , last believe d to be in the Cherry Creek Mountain range west of Currie, Utah.

Did your seasoning on that pan hold up to the sauce?
That's a great question, because I've ruined my seasoning in the past putting the wrong sauce in it. I have to admit I didn't even think about it at the time, but apparently this particular sauce is not acidic because it didn't impact the seasoning at all. This sauce is made in a coconut milk base so perhaps that helps? I honestly got lucky here. I really need to add a stainless pan to my kit...I love cooking with vinegar and have had to stop entirely while camping, heh.

I picked that up on clearance a couple years ago at Walmart...it was dirt cheap and it's an awesome extra layer when it's chilly but not frigid.

It does. :-) I miss the gas mileage and the extreme maneuverability of the Forester, but in every other way, the Frontier is better for what I do.
