      I'm 47 and also had no idea. I never had one go to pod before I honestly. I have a ton of pods on two plants rn that I thought were failed/mutant snap pea plants. I was letting it be to see what was up and now I realize it's a stray radish I didn't harvest lolol.

    Rachel's face when she eats it raw... Lol. For those who like raw radishes (or salads), the pods are delicious right off the plant. Also, her bee comment is spot on. They seem to particularly enjoy radish flowers.

    Some of my radishes never really produced an edible radish, but they did produce the pods, so I ended up with a mixture. One thing that is worth remembering is that you get a lot more produce from pods (e.g. 1 radish can produce many pods), so it is better in some ways...

      Yes! My radishes were like WOOD this year! I hated it. I was so sad they weren't the juicy tender ones my MIL grows. But, I did accidently let one go to seed and it's in the same plot as the Kentucky Gold Beans and some green beans that I'd never planted before so I thought it was a mutant green bean! But, I have an app for taking a pic of my plants and it tells me everything I need to know, and when I snapped apic it said it was radish seed! And this is the first video I found and sure enough it had all the info I was looking for...and I am going to look at freezing them for the winter, as I could use it in stir fries and such.

    This just makes me love growing radishes so much more! This is the first year I grew radish, planted them the past fall to help aerate the soil. They were delicious pickled, and I even tried eating the leaves (spicy! 😳). I planted them too closely together, and most of them didn't even produce a good radish size. So I let them go to flower. The really cute flowers were buzzing with pollinators, and now I'm learning that the pods are delicious too!? Such a functional plant! Anyways thank you for trying the pods made different ways. I am absolutely certain I will love them pickled ❤.

    I grow radishes sometimes, but I’ve never let them go to seed which is weird bc I pretty much let everything I plant go to seed. I seen a post on fb the other day that was exactly like one that was in my backyard, and the post said it was radish that had gone to seed, and the pods are edible. I was blown away bc the thing is HUGE, and has tons of seed pods on it. Much more food than just the roots! It came from seed in the bird feeder I found your video when I looked up recipes. Yours are a different variety than mine. Mine are slender and longer. In my case the thinner, greener ones are best. I’m definitely gonna pickle them, sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing your video!

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh neat! Since your pods are slender and long, also check if it might be another type of brassica, perhaps turnip. Radishes seem to have the shortest, fattest pods compared to others in that family. All are edible, but I think the radish ones are the best.

  • @GlennHanna8
    @GlennHanna8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'll try stir fry and pickling for sure since I'm surprised at how many of these things I'm collecting in my garden each day. I've been putting them in my salads in replacement of the edamame (bleck) that ruined my enjoyment of salads and it worked. They taste like a peapod and then a slight radish taste (as you demonstrate) which also gets my radish fix and I don't have to cut up a radish to add to a salad... plus the pods aren't overpowering on the radish flavor so if I put a few more than usual in my salad, it's not going to ruin it.
    You are right about bringing in pollinators too.... I had some small batches of flowers in the garden to attract pollinators, but the first actual bee I saw of the season was loving the flowers from my bolted radishes. The rest of my garden enjoys the benefit of the pollinators, at least I do haha. These pods are a pleasant surprise to bolted radishes that I can't believe I'd hadn't heard of them or ate them before I planted radishes for the first time this year.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know! Although in the past I've found edible doesn't always equal good haha! I tried carrot-top pesto last year and it was technically edible but SO bitter. So I'm glad these are edible AND tasty.

      Supermarkets are so convenient but they've kinda cost us our food traditions. What you get at the market is what matures the quickest and ships the easiest. There are so many parts of plants you can grow and eat that are just not feasible to ship long distances. What percent of the population doesn't realize the ubiquitous green pepper is actually unripe and kinda bitter because the growers needed to pick it and ship it more quickly and easily?
      Great video. I subscribed.

    I love radish seed pods, delicious. Which variety did you harvest, that was an amazing bunch of pods, almost worth growing spring radishes just for the seed pods. Yeah those pickled pods will last several months or more. Light salt, a bit of garlic and a very light shot of Sriracha might be something I'm going to try in the pan. Great video.

    • @AuxhartGardening

      These are from black spanish radishes. They're supposed to be a bigger radish so maybe that's why the pods are so prolific? I don't have anything to compare it to though. But I'm thinking I'm getting something like 100 pods per radish I left in the bed. Crazy producer.

    Watched your videos on radishes when mine were just sprouting. Most didn't develop good bulbs so I let them turn into trees for the pods. Super worth it. I did find out the hard way not to sit and try to eat a whole bowl of them raw xD
    Definitely gonna go pickle some later. That's a great idea.

    So much rain and humidity out your way this year. We are normally dry our area but this year is starting off much drier than normal. Can never trust the weather. We have been huge fans of pickling over the past couple years and will definitely be trying to get some of those pods and adding them to a few things. THAT'S a win... Win...WIN!
    sow in spring, eat till Winter. That's NO way a fail.
    Remember to save back seeds too.

    I grew radishes for the first time this year and I left a couple in the ground just to experiment and they kept getting bigger and bigger and they bolted, then they flowered and the flowers are falling off and now I see those pods on there. it is so awesome to see. Do I try to do anything with the flowers? There are a lot all over the ground. And if I want seeds for next year‘s harvest how will I save the seeds? where will they come from? Are they in the pod or in the flower?
