China high speed train seating primer: A/F are always window seats, C/D are aisle seats. In 2nd class, seats are 3+2 with ABC on one side of the aisle and DF on the other. In 1st class it's AC + DF. In business class, it's A + F, or AC + F, or A + DF.

It's interesting for me, as a Chinese person who has always lived in this country, to hear about different experiences. Because of my business trips, I regularly take high-speed trains. I heard that you complained about the air conditioning in VIP class because it was too hot. However, I always need to wear more layers in second class. I think the key reason is that we have different temperature requirements. Maybe you can ask the attendant to adjust the temperature. I believe they will be glad to help you because it's their responsibility. Additionally, to avoid crime and other unnecessary trouble, I advise you to order a taxi using a mobile app (like Didi, similar to Uber in the USA) in advance or wait in line outside the station.

    • @thisiskevin1000

Didi has long bought Uber’s mainland China business as part of the US ride-hailing app’s cost cutting measures and reshuffling of its overseas operations.
Outside of mainland China, Didi has presence in Japan (minus the ride hailing feature) and a number of Latin American countries under Didi 99 brand

If the software doesn't support passport purchase (I haven't tried to use passport purchase), you can also explain to the conductor when you buy offline that you want and your favorite location, or if you have a companion, you can ask the conductor to arrange you together. I'm glad you are keeping it real and sharing your honest opinion. I as a Chinese also don't enjoy the borderline harassment when I get out of the airport/train station. It can get really annoying, especially for people who don't feel good about rejecting others.
Regarding the AC, most Chinese never buy the idea of "22~23 Celsius is the most comfortable temperature" for some reason. Chinese, especially the elders and women, are more used to 26 Celsius either because of energy saving or because they are just more used to it. Some also believe that getting blasted by cold air is very bad for one's body, especially the joints.

Actually there are mainly two different types of business class on the high speed railways, the one you take is the early version, it has less privacy than the new version which has a room for your own. But the new version of business class is only seen on the latest trains which usually just appear on the lines that connecting two big cities. If you see the sign of something like "smart" trian, that's definitely the new version one, so maybe you can try them again sometime.(you can just go for a very short ride and that will be very affordable, that's what we often do to try new products on the trains).

Mass western travel is just ramping up now with the ease in visas and visa free for many countries including Australia. so, as time goes by travel services on other languages will get better it's a trial-and-error type of system.

Regarding the allocation of seats on the HSR, the situation is as follows: in case there are spare seats, if two tickets are booked at the same time, these two seats will usually be arranged together. However, if the seats are tight or if someone refunds the ticket, it is possible that the two seats are not next to each other.
You can look at the seat numbers before you pay, and if you think there's a problem, you can cancel the payment and repurchase. This method also applies if you need a window seat.

The pink ribbon on the toilet seat has two functions. The first function is to make it convenient for people to lift the toilet seat without touching it directly, as many men prefer to lift the seat and urinate while standing rather than sitting down when using this type of toilet. So they need to extend and lift the toilet seat. The second reason is that when the seat is put down, it sometimes makes a loud noise when it hits the toilet. This rubber handle can also absorb some of this noise.

@@josieliftsthings What you can say is that "hey, I hope they could have a seating map like in the movie ticket website so I could pick and choose a seating I like during my travel." That is improvement. That is not confusion.

@@josieliftsthingsReally? it's unlucky. But why? I used this service almost every time, because I really can not bear the food cooked in train. I see. Did you pass the ordering time? There are only few stations where the takeout food can be delivered to the train. If you didn't order food in time and passed those stations, you will lose the chance.

What should the ordering time be? We thought we were fine on the long train to Kunming but even 2.5 hours before it was all closed for us 🙃

@@josieliftsthings You can only order from your upcoming major cities/stations en route. It is usually recommended that you check the menu and order as soon as you board. What happened to you was mostly likely, there were no major cities ahead, or there was no time left for them to prepare the food to deliver to the platform before your train arrives.

Welcome to my hometown Xi’an (Hsian) hope you lovely couple will have a wonderful time, just to experience and explore the awesome five thousand years of culture. If you have plenty of time, rent a traditional Chinese costume (Han Fu 汉服), FYI that’s very common in Xi’an. Plus, get some photoshoot at the “Grand Tang Mall”

@@josieliftsthingswas it the hours or you're too close to the next station? The food you're ordering from should be just for the restaurants at the stations so it's within those working hours. You might need to order a few station ahead. If timing doesn't permit then it would be blanked out like in the app.

About 10 years ago, when I was still in uni, I took the old version green train with sleeping cars from chengdu to xi’an, it was very slow but a totally different experience and quite interesting. I think you can try this kind of trains if they are still available now

As a very very general rule, Southerners like eating rice and Northerners love noodles. Obviously you can buy noodles in the south and rice in the north, but the north may have more noodle places available.
