I'd not done that before because in 7b mine doesn't get brown and crunchy, so I only ever cut out what looked old and tired. Within a week, maybe two, there was a bouquet of flowers coming up from the ground. And it was beautiful. ❤ The new leaves are filling in and it all looks so fresh. Thank you, Laura 😊
Thanks for saying this - mine are in full bloom now and I wasn't sure when to prune them because they seem to keep the flowers most of the year.. Guess I'll wait until next year but at least now I know when LOL

I am really enjoying seeing these "old friends" from your garden. There are so many wonderful new "friends" but I found myself feeling nostalgic for this part of your garden.
Hi Laura! You are so relaxed in your garden. That's my happy place. Can't wait for the spring weather! I need to get out of trim my Hydrangeas. Have a wonderful day! Happy gardening. 💮🥀🌻🌻🌞
So happy to see you start the spring garden cleanup! Gives me hope that winter may actually finally end soon. There’s something so lovely about a freshly cleaned garden that’s ready for spring/summer!
Great video I remember that corner when you planted those hydrangeas. The struggle they had coming to you. They look amazing and so robust. I wish Hellebores were perennials here. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I think I am living my best hellebore life here in NC. We have two different beautiful pink hellebores but sadly don’t know their varieties. But they gave us dozens and dozens of babies!!! I dug some up and potted them up and they are doing great! I didn’t know they reseeded 😮 we have a ton of deer so these are a blessing 😊
Thank you so much, Laura for the wonderful garden motivation video. Fantastic job of Spring cleanup with Russell's assistance. The gardens are happy now. 🥰😻
👋👋Good Tuesday morning, Laura and Aaron!!! 👋Hi Russell!!!🐈 Showing us your behind, huh? 😂🤣😂 Awwwwwe, the way you were just washing your face made me think of my little angel furbaby, Yoda! He was my Morkie, who passed away 3 years ago, this coming April 12. He used to lay in my lap and wash his face JUST like that..... Dang it, now my eyes are leaking, thinking about him. Phew, I thought the pain was gone, until you did that, Russell. S👀ing the chicken coop in the background, reminded me that I wanted to mention something about your thoughts on having people park in front of the girls home. This is just my opinion, but I would reconsider that plan; the girls are healthy and thriving with the good healthy food and treats that you give them. If you start having people park there, they will start breathing those fumes and exhaust every time someone pulls up and leaves.... Like I said, just my opinion. What a delightful video!!!🤗😊🤗 Thank you for sharing, Laura and Aaron!!! Have a Blessed and Beautiful day/night 🌞/🌜✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️ 🌐 everyone!!! Kimberley F in the Arizona desert 🌞🌵💞🏜😎 (Zone 9b) USA 🇺🇸
We are having a weird, wet cold spring here in Sweden too! Well up noth of us snow of course, but here in the very south we usually have like typical English (inland) weather. Loove what the two of you do! Soo inspiring even for us here! I tell everyone I meet of you wonderful channel! Lots of love from Sweden to the both of you❤
It's giving me so much life to see your garden come into spring! I'm about 2 weeks behind your season where I am, so it makes me excited to know what's right around the bend for me!
Love your videos, too soon here in MI yet but I do see some of my plants waking up. Your energy is so contagious. I too have some barn cats that are just like your Russell. They follow me everywhere and spend time with me in the garden. So do my chickens! Can't wait for your planting bonanzas that will be coming soon!
Your property is Stunning 🌺. So Beautiful!! I Love watching & learning from your channel. My favorite flower is a Hydrangea, but I have trouble with them. I live in Utah zone 6. The front of my home faces North and I planted 3 Hydrangeas in my front yard 2 years in a row. They died each time I planted them. The past 3 years I planted “Proven Winners Hydrangeas” in my backyard. They got about 3 hours of morning sun afternoon shade and 2-3 hours of evening sun. I planted 3 and 2 survived. The next spring I replaced the one that died, it did ok last year. Now 2023 I only have one that survived. 😞 I’m so sad. Do you have any tips that might help??? Thank you for all of your beautiful videos and Amazing Information. 🦋🌺 🌱 🌞 🌿
I have two vanilla strawberry hydrangea standards that I bought last year. They really flop a lot in our heavy rains here in Northwest Arkansas (also a 6b, but much more humid). I have followed your advice and cut them back quite a bit. I really hope they will get stronger this year. You introduced me to panicle hydrangeas several years ago, starting with the firelight tidbit. It does amazingly every year, even though it feels so brutal when I cut it back! I know you worry about repeating videos, but it is really helpful to see this several years in a row. Keep doing what you're doing! 🤩🌸👍🏻
🌺 one thing that I think helps a lot with my Hydrangeas is not cutting them back at all, or not as much. I have noticed that when I leave the old stem’s/ bark it’s kinda like a natural “tomato cage”. Leaving the old growth helps to hold up the large Blumes. It is hard not to cut them back in the spring because they don’t look nice at all. But I think it’s really given me a fuller beautiful Hydrangea. I don’t have to worry about the flowers lying on the wet ground after rain or watering. I don’t have to worry about all the bugs 🐜 crawling around on them because they are to heavy and touching the soil either. I hope this is helpful to you! :) Happy Gardening!! 🌼 🌱 🌺 🌿 🐝 🦋
Thanks for the refresher course on pruning. I’ll be getting my garden pruning started very soon. My yard gets very wet, so it impedes my work plan a bit. It’s so exciting to see new budding and growth. I have to watch what my visitors are up to (squirrels, rabbits, and deer) 😊
Good morning, Laura ☕️ How satisfying was that?! I haven’t started my cleanup yet due to temps still in the 30’s at night however,I did get to plant my jugs that I winter sowed with Tulips, Daffodils 🌼 and Alliums 🙌🏻 Everything is looking so good! Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
@@conniesanrn2730 Hello, I do. I put them is old pots from previously purchased plants however, I have to winter them over in my garage or the pesky squirrels 🐿️ will dig them up! Little punks! I’ve watched Laura do it so I figured it must work and, it sure does! This is my second year with 💯 success.
Your late winter garden looks great, even without the bulbs, lots of great structure! I know you’ve worked hard to get that in place and it shows. By the way, I’m going to start calling Russell “Lucy Ricardo” because he always wants to get into the show 😂😂. Thanks for sharing your home, family and expertise. ❤
Just have to say it would be nice to have you as a neighbor!! There would always be something so pretty to look out your window and see! Hope all your neighbor know who lucky they are! Thank you for all your videos. I have learned so much! 🌺🌼
I went out early, about a month ago, with two -three foot of snow still 😜, and pruned my huge strawberry vanilla panicle hydrangeas. I did it a little earlier than last year., but I had such success after pruning them late winter last year that I couldn’t resist getting out there and cleaning it up, getting it ready for a bountiful year.🤞🏻 Hopefully I didn’t go at it too early. 😬
Oh wow!! I'm in North Wales and I've been enjoying an incredible daffodil display while yours is barely started!!😮 I'll enjoy mine while it lasts (and hopefully a beautiful tulip displey), and when mine is all over, I can continue to your beautiful garden. ❤
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was worried that you wouldn't cover pruning hydrangeas this year because you've covered it in previous videos. I planted Little Lime Punch hydrangeas last year, and I need to prune them. Since watching your videos, I have a renewed love of gardening. Keep going over things, even if you've done them before because you evolve your methods and we are directly benefitted from that.
I started watching your channel when you planted the Hydrangeas by your porch. Amazing the growth they have took on! Very winery here in Utah and below freezing at night. The primrose are trying hard though. Thanks for gearing me up for what is coming soon, SPRING!
I just noticed your subscriber total has made the jump to 1.7 million! Congratulations you guys. I just was at a garden center this am and talked with the worker who is also familiar with your channel...and she carries Espoma products (which was my lead-in to chat about seed starting and other things).
Just Love these Pruning videos, so utterly Satisfying. The Transformation is always worth the effort. Russell is an additional treat. Got to get to more Pruning today. Lots of growth from the Rainy season. ✂️🌿😻💖
I went to my parent’s house last weekend and had no clue my dad had SO many hellebores! Probably thousands in the garden. He said he planted a few and they’ve just naturalized over the past 10 years. I was shocked, since they cost about $25 for a one gallon pot at my local garden centers. Needless to say I will be coming prepared with pots to take some back with me next time I visit mom and dad 😬
@@amysgardenstead2879 wow! That’s a gold mine you’re sitting on Amy haha! If you need a little side hustle to bring in a little extra mad money, you could probably start a little Etsy business selling the babies for $10 a pop! 😂

wow, job well done.. i cannot believe we're coming up to the end of march and i'm just really getting into spring cleanup down here in (formerly sunny) socal! it feels so good to get out there and get it done, except for the rains coming this week (oy).. and yes, we needed them, so there's that... such a weird winter, i hope the spring lasts equally long before the hot hits... look how many things you've planted around your property in the last few years... you are a planting machine!! i love it! can't wait to see blooms in the spring!! 🥰❤thanks for the video!! 🥰❤
Perfect timing! It’s the day I planned on cutting my hydrangeas back - and every year I second guess myself! I got mine on discount (they were really small and neglected) so I’m not exactly sure what type they are. One year they bloom amazing and the next I don’t get one flower 😢
It's so nice to follow you as you work with perennials out in the garden again! I've learned so much from watching your videos, so thank you. Also just wanted to mention that Aaron is my spirit animal. I find myself sharing his opinions on almost everything, like the fescue looking dead and finding the air plants weird/underwhelming.
Nice pruning video, does look like garden is ready to do fresh growth viewer request...a spring veg or dessert recipe ....... soon...maybe for Easter 🐰🐸🐣🐞
Perfectly timed video because I need to go and prune back my massive hydrangea bush in my front yard. It came with the house we just moved into and it desperately needs to be trimmed back.
I’ve recently gone back and re-watched your first garden tour series - when you walked us through the garden for the first time. It was such a beautiful and inspiring established garden, but looking back I understand it now, that it was missing the overarching structure and “flow”. It’s very interesting to see how you and Aaron are redesigning everything and gradually transforming the space. It showed me how I can do the same and “dare” taking out trees and hedges and making my garden to my own. It just opened up a completely new levels of gardening. Thank you!! Just curious: what happened to the Angel Statue? I don’t think I saw that in your recent videos.
At 3:01 you can see the wings of the statue peaking up just behind Laura through the lilac branches. I know she calls it an angel, but I'm pretty sure it's a statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. That's a fairly classical depiction, with the wings, flowing drapery, the torch, and an unfurled scroll in hand.
Don’t understand the attraction to a flower whose blooms point to the ground & can really only be appreciated if you manually turn them up! But while I won’t be planting Hellebores, I enjoy watching Laura do her “thing” 😁
don't worry about being behind. after you get a 20 inch snowfall in the last week of March, you'll know what behind is. but, I have every intention of bouncing back to my "real" garden soon. gardeners have belief and persistence. just keep on keeping on.
Great job as always! Your gardens are so beautiful and such an inspiration. Is it possible to talk about North facing shady areas? Maybe when you redo the coop😊 We recently changed the entryway to our home and I feel like I need to add a couple shrubs that are shade tolerant, deer resistant and low maintenance. 😀 I have a list of what used to be in the space but I don’t necessarily want to replant those. I’m hoping to add Hellibore and maybe astilbe but I feel like I need a bit more structure first.
What great timing. I was just looking at my hydrangeas yesterday thinking I needed to search your channel to see how to trim. I cleaned up my hellebores a few weeks ago but forgot to fertilize - thanks for the reminder! You're the best!
Hi Laura! I can’t begin to tell you how encouraging this tutorial is to me. I always internally fuss before I prune my hydrangea because I worry I’ll mess up. Now I’m geared up to trim away. 😊 Question: any chance you can update us again on the different fertilizers you use? I know you’ve covered this topic in the past but I feel as though I’m hearing you refer to new or different fertilizers. 🤷🏻♀️ I always thought Biotone was your all around go to. Thank you in advance. Erin
Can hardly wait for spring to arrive here in northern Idaho. The snow get less and less every day which is very encouraging. Love watching you do what I will be doing in a few weeks (or more).
We did enjoy this video Laura! How long did it take you to prune all of your hydrangeas? Do you like the original limelight’s or limelight primes better, which one is your favorite?

I've wanted to ask you something for years, who named Russell? I can't imagine him by any other name! He's quite the character 😂
Perfect timing! It’s the day I planned on cutting my hydrangeas back - and every year I second guess myself! I got mine on discount (they were really small and neglected) so I’m not exactly sure what type they are. One year they bloom amazing and the next I don’t get one flower 😢
Loved it. Loved it. I think spring clean up or fall clean up videos are some of the most informative and satisfying videos! Thank you for sharing!! ♥️
So funny about Aaron.
Love how Russell is always by your side. 😻
Thanks for your tips on cutting back.
Nice pruning video, does look like garden is ready to do fresh growth
viewer request...a spring veg or dessert recipe ....... soon...maybe for Easter 🐰🐸🐣🐞
I thought you used Rose Tone for hydrangeas because Espoma recommended it. I’ve used it for a few years with great results!
😱Beautiful 🥰 Here in Canada is super hard the weather, I will enjoy that espectacular moment in my garden until May-June 😩. Blessing guys ❤❤❤.
Perfectly timed video because I need to go and prune back my massive hydrangea bush in my front yard. It came with the house we just moved into and it desperately needs to be trimmed back.
I like how the standoffish chickens were hanging around Laura as she pruned the buddleia.

Watching Laura in fast motion reminds me of when my doctor asked me (full time maintenance gardener) what I "did" for exercise. 😂😊😅
Thank you for always revisiting pruning the hydrangeas, appreciate it. 😊
Thank you for being a shinning light today. Loving your positive spring energy!
beautiful plants and a very calm place with a cute lady
Hi Laura! I can’t begin to tell you how encouraging this tutorial is to me. I always internally fuss before I prune my hydrangea because I worry I’ll mess up. Now I’m geared up to trim away. 😊
Question: any chance you can update us again on the different fertilizers you use? I know you’ve covered this topic in the past but I feel as though I’m hearing you refer to new or different fertilizers. 🤷🏻♀️ I always thought Biotone was your all around go to. Thank you in advance. Erin
Wow, looks great Laura! Now you can come plant some stuff at my house next 😊❤🤗
Can hardly wait for spring to arrive here in northern Idaho. The snow get less and less every day which is very encouraging. Love watching you do what I will be doing in a few weeks (or more).
It amazes me how the plants and shrubs growing already. So exciting & tq for all your tips!
Good morning handsome Russell and Laura too! Love the hydrangea tips.
Love this !!..
will you be doing anymore dry flower bouquets? I miss seeing these bouquets from all seasons your so creative!
We did enjoy this video Laura! How long did it take you to prune all of your hydrangeas? Do you like the original limelight’s or limelight primes better, which one is your favorite?
Great question! I’m wondering the same thing.
