      I watched a seeing eye dog once possibly save the life of a lady. The dog recognized the bus his owner needed somehow and got really antsy. She thought it was the wrong bus and told the dog "no that's not our bus." I kinda knew it was the last bus of the day so I asked her what bus she wanted. It turned out that it was the right bus afterall so I let her know. If the dog hadn't had been so antsy, I wouldn't have said anything. A pretty major snow storm hit that night and had they missed their bus they may have been stuck alone there all night. Don't know if she had a cell phone or not.

    This video was really informative. I was impressed hearing that dog guides can even guide their handler back to a parked car they rode only in once. And like Tommy said, dog guides are trained to watch for low hanging objects that could hit their handler's head so they stop at that sort of obstacle so the handler can get the idea to use upper hand protective technique and keep walking until it's clear. Alternatively, the handler can shift a foot ahead in the instance the dog stopped because of a drop off like stairs or a curb. It's fascinating to learn.

    I really appreciate this video Tommy. So many strangers have gotten angry with me simply because I don't have a guide dog, and I am really good at navigating with my cane, and it would just be really difficult for me to have a dog now for many reasons. My friend's guide dogs have all been wonderful and uniquely different, and have all melted my heart. I would just not be able to get anything else done if I had one full time, and they are, full time. They need people with lots of physical stamina, and lots of time. I've sat with a retired guide for a week and loved him very much not even using him as a guide. Also have lots of travel experience with working teams, so am aware of pros and cons. It's the old thing of people asking questions and ignoring that you are answering from having experienced a life time of situations, compared to only once for three minutes. I've also had people insist that I'm lying to them, that I don't have a dog, and become enraged when I continue to tell them I don't have one. They insist they've seen me with my dog, and I don't have one. I would know, if I had a dog. Why can't a stranger or bus driver accept that I know whether or not I have a dog? This is just another thing that regularly happens to me as a blind person out and about.

    I am currently raising my 10th puppy for Leader Dogs for the Blind, a male black lab/golden retriever mix named "Lumos". I know that my dogs are life-changing for the people who receive them, but I appreciate your perspective. Dogs are a big responsibility and the same can be said of a guide dog. It's not for everyone! But they are amazing. People ask me every day how I can give my puppy back after a year, and of course it is hard, but someone needs him more than I want him. He needs to go to someone who needs him so he can stop them from being hit by a car someday. Thanks for this video, and for all of your videos. They have really helped me raise better dogs by giving me insight into life as a person who is blind or visually impaired. Thank you!

      @rilee5275 7 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      Sean Richards yes, you should not pet any working dog. If someone is just sitting in one place with their service animal, it may be appropriate to ask. Don't just ask while they're walking down the street.

    • @sapphireotaku3399
      @sapphireotaku3399 7 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      Don't pet, talk to, or otherwise interact with any working dog unless you ask. For service dogs I say don't ask either, as the dog is busy and I'm sure the handler has things to do. :) I train my own dogs for different jobs (obedience, therapy work, etc.) and often I'm in public with them. It is slightly irritating when the dog is listening well, I tell it to ignore a distraction (the person) and then the person walks right up and grabs at my dog like they're 2 years old. It's INCREDIBLY annoying when they have a vest on and people do it anyway (I've also had kids hit, scream at, and bark at my dogs whime their parents stare). And I'm ready to murder someone if I ask someone not to pet the dog and they do anyway (or talk to it instead). Sounds like a small deal, but I've had it happen douzens of times in less than an hour and it's really disruptive. You wouldn't touch someone's wheelchair or cane while they're using it, don't touch their service dog! :)
      (My rant is over. I can only imagine the struggles of a service dog handler.)

    This was very informative. I've had trainers explain to me briefly about how dogs are trained to help those who are blind or deaf or have medical needs and what breeds are good for what, but I didn't know the full extent of what a seeing eye dog could be trained for. It's quite impressive!

    Absolutely, it takes a lot of planning. I have two children which are grown up now, but I was offered a guide/service dog and they are more work than having children. I grew up with owning three dogs as my retina disease was a slow moving deterioration of my vision. But once my vision deterrioted I opt for the stic instead. I didn't have enough people in my family that could help me out when I got sick. Dogs need grooming, playtime walking outside to do their business and I had too many health issues to keep it up. I'm still learning to work with my residual vision as the disease progresses and walking in the snow with my stick is very difficult. Do you have snow where you live? And if you do do you only use cabs or wheeltrans to get around? I would love some tips on how to walk through unploughed snow on the sidewalk. I have 2 coaches that come in twice a week from the CNIB but they are in the midst of changing staff around, so I'm without help right now. If you could do a vlog for people who were not born blind, but are going to be soon, I'd appreciate it!! By the way your so enjoyable to listen too as well as funny!!!❣️🇨🇦

      Personally, I'd say no. Apparently the suicide rate in people who are blind and regain their sight is extremely high because of how overwhelming vision is if you've never had it before (fact of the day) --note: I heard this from a professional I worked with, but I'm having difficulty finding another source.

      I don't believe that at all. Sounds like a myth.
      Main reasons someone wouldn't get a surgery for vision is:
      1. Risk of complications/failure. Could get brain damage or a lethal infection. definitely the biggest reason.
      2. Cost.
      3. The vision would still be extremely limited, and would still likely be legally blind (except in the further future. That said, current tech can't even help him _at all_, only other people with different types of blindness)

    • @ShadowMachine00
      @ShadowMachine00 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't forget that smell actually contributes to a large portion of how
      you taste. Eating without smell is sort of like seeing in black and
      white. You are going to get kind of a generally decent idea of what you
      are experiencing but extremely limited. I knew a kid in 8th grade who
      lost his sense of smell due to some sort of health issue they knew he
      had but they had hoped it wouldn't cause that to happen. He became like
      really depressed and suicidal after that because food just didn't taste
      like much of anything. I talked to his cousin because they pulled him
      from school and she said he reported only really being able to taste
      like saltyness, sweetness, and certain other super specific taste
      categories and textures. For the most part he said most things just
      tasted like gray mush. I mean that seriously sucks. Id give up hearing I
      think before i gave up sight, touch, taste, or smell.

    • @jazzyhk1809
      @jazzyhk1809 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      wait what :O I didn't know that your sense of smell can affect your sense of taste too! So that's probably why if you've got a cold and a stuffy nose, everything tastes crap? I thought it was just because of the sickness or the medicines. >

    • @finallywoman18
      @finallywoman18 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well the first dog was too dangerous to have around a blind child. The dog was too rambunctious and could have unintentionally injured him. Parents have to do what is best for their child especially if they have a disability.
      I don't think giving the last dog away was cruel either. It seems like they gave him back because it was better for the dog. Besides they didn't dump him in a shelter they gave him back to the guide dog organization and they made sure he lived out his old age in comfort. Tommy actually cared about him and made sure he would be taken care of, that is far from cruel and insensitive.

      Delilah There's a long waiting list for guide dogs so some other person who needed one and who was better able to handle one that was a bit overactive got lucky and I'm pretty sure that guide dogs normally get retired to families who don't need a woking dog when they get to old to work. It's very important to find a good match between service dogs and their handlers because of how much time they spend working together. It's really not the same thing as picking up an animal as a pet.

    • @Jhawks4LIFE
      @Jhawks4LIFE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Motion sickness isn't really a visual thing. Its a motion thing so being blind wouldnt really affect if someone gets motion sickness. Same goes for migranes. You don't need sight for migranes

    • @UrbanAlex44
      @UrbanAlex44 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      not necessarily, one of the possible causes of motion sickness is the disconnect between your eyes seeing you're stationary and your inner ear saying you are in motion

    • @LYMLIZARD
      @LYMLIZARD 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Motion sickness is created by the fluid in your ear that tells your brain your orientation sloshing around making your brain confused.

    • @tacticalchunder1207
      @tacticalchunder1207 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Motion sickness is caused by your brain being confused by your contradicting senses. Your eyes are telling your brain that you are moving but your ears are telling it that you are stationary. In the case of a boat rocking, your it’s the other way around (eyes saying you aren’t moving but ears tell your brain that you are). So I doubt tommy experiences it.

      A lot of blind people have to give their dogs away. Its a great responsibility and often there are other loving families that will be able to take better care of the dog. Especially if the blind person is getting another guide dog as a replacement after the first cant work anymore. Think about being a blind person that now has to take care of TWO dogs? I believe some blind people rehome the dogs to family members so they have the option of visiting the dog even after giving it up.
