I have been up and down that road many times over the years-in a Jeep. Once I left out in Silverton heading for Ouray and followed a big truck. It obviously was not his first time on the road; smooth and precise. Twice he pulled over to let traffic around and I pulled in behind so I could follow and continue to watch. I often wondered what it would be like on that road in the cab-thanks for the video and a tip of my hat to your skills.

I’ve been on that road several time at about 2am in a blinding snow storm . It would get so bad I’d actually stop and just sit there with zero viability . Beyond hair raising . That road has tried to kill me several times in bad weather . So damn beautiful though .

I had a similar load very close to there, loaded rough cut lumber in Ouray, full 80K load, routed me to Telluride, just before town, right onto 145, 2 miles straight up till you look down on the ski area, top of Lizard Head pass, then same narrow 2 lane road 30+ miles downhill to Cortez, no pull offs, no emergency ramps, and still Ice in shaded turns in July, Once was enough

A few years ago, I followed two truckers from Tennesee going up 550. The back axle tires on their trailer would go completely off the road. They pulled over about halfway up the mountain. Those two guys bailed out of their trucks, scared to death.

Out of all the trucking channels I watch on TH-cam your truck seems to be the most pronounced I've ever heard especially back when you were hauling liquid tanks. I did that same route with pallets of chicken wired River Rock about 3 months ago as well!
Funny story! There was a DROPPED FLATBED TRAILER WITH ONIONS at the top of the Mountain when I got up there! 😂 driver and tractor NOWHERE to be found! I’m sure your shipper has lost more than 1 load on 550 ha!
Thought I was gonna cut through to Albuquerque real quick! Think I’ll take i70 over to 191 next time😂.
I had my seatbelt off and my door cracked more than once on that road! Never been so on edge my entire life! White knuckled and adrenaline going!
If you got the video, you should share some video and pics of the old miner cabins and structures near the top! I had a whole new respect for my ancestors after that drive. I can’t imagine getting up to the top of 550 100-150 years ago, and then brining loads back out! Must have been insane!

Started trucking before I turned 50 and I will be 67 next Monday. Loaded some stone at Montrose to Houston a few years back and went south on 550 to pass south of a storm developing on the east side of Colorado ... That was the first and last last time I'll do that ... As you make a sharp right turn to start the first climb the big yellow sign advises you to consider an alternate route ... "LMAO" ... It's to late for that. At maybe 9000 ft ran into snow but, made over and down OK. On the 2nd climb at about the same altitude same except this time the melting snow had began freezing. Making the decent as I approached a 15 MPH turn at maybe 10 grossing over 79000 the truck and trailer began sliding on the snow covered ice ... The saving grace was that there was some exposed pavement in the oncoming lane, so I moved over and slowed on down to probably walking speed and made it on down ... The 3rd climb and decent was on dry pavement

The road was insane at some parts, there was no side banquet, it was just as narrow as the road lane. And I guess nobody can guarantee you, that the outer side of the road is stable enough at the edge, esp. for a loaded semi. Respect.

I've not driven a semi over the Million Dollar Highway, but I towed 26' gooseneck livestock trailers over it numerous times in my younger life. In pickups, 4WD's and cars, I've driven that road probably close to a thousand times for both business and pleasure in my 50 years+ of driving. It is a road that demands complete respect every time--it is completely unforgiving of driving mistakes. It can be really obnoxious in winter--not only icy and snowpacked road (with no guardrail in many places if one slips off the road), but avalanches are common in winter and spring. Rockslides occur regularly in spring and summer. Many "flatlanders" are so terrified on that road that I've seen them just "freeze up" at the wheel and stop in the middle of the highway, unable to drive further. A couple of times, my passenger has gotten out and driven their vehicle for them over the most hair-raising part of the highway. I've since relocated where I don't have to drive 550 but infrequently, but I still do on occasion. Fabulous scenery--but a landscape that can kill you if you are inattentive or careless.

I have driven mountains many times in the Pyrenees, but never in an artic (semi), going down is usually more frightening then going up. I have spun (360) a car twice in such conditions, once on snow once on a dry road, on both occasions my wife was a passenger and didn't speak to me for a week after.

👍👍👍Holy cow, Brother, I am sitting safe at home, and my knees were like, that feeling when you go up on a tall building and look over the edge. Dam man. Who sent you that way? 🤣🤣 But on the real side. What beauty our land is. And if your not on the roads, stuff like this you will never see or experience it. My own memories of areas on this land is etched in my brain and just stories to someone who don't work the roads.

I've been driving that route for 35 years(not in a big rig). I hate it, my wife won't drive it.
    You're a brave man(or a fool!)

I drove a road very similar to this amount of danger in East Wenatchee, Washington. I must say there is no room for the slightest mistakes when driving an 18 wheeler on roads this steep, narrow and high in elevation.
