If those were 9 x 9 tiles on that floor, there is a very good chance there was asbestos in them which is very very dangerous. You're suppose to have that size/age tile tested prior to removing. Also wear protective gear while removing.
I watched the video again and she was wearing both eye protection and a respirator while removing this paper! And you're correct about that hopefully Lauren and Neiman had the tar paper tested for asbestos!
@@jenniferbassett3001 Yes I did notice she was wearing a respirator as well as eye protection and gloves. I was meaning she should be at the very least wearing a disposable one piece jump suit. Kind of like the ones people wear while spray painting ceiling etc. That asbestos is no joke.
I just bought a 100 year old house & the same for me … hardwood floors underneath. I can’t wait to refinish them. The bathroom had 3 layers of laminate & some weird thin wood like paper that I tore out all the way down to be able to refinish the wood floors in their as well. ♥️
What were people thinking back In the day to cover up hard woods 🤦🏻♀️ you are a hard worker Lauren and you do beautiful work!! This renovation is going to be soooo GOOD!!
People don’t realize that’s it’s not actually hardwood floors. That’s actually the subfloor. They didn’t have plywood back then and by covering it with tar paper and carpet etc it’s extra insulation
@@randybobandy9828 the fibers remain airborne when disturbed that bad and will get on everything that’s exposed. Chances are she got it on her close, walls etc and breathed in some as she went on. That and it’s said the fibers stay airborne for hours
@@rcg224 you call a remediation specialist. It's not the most dangerous form asbestos can take but it's still not really safe to remove by yourself. It also may not be legal to remove by yourself depending on your jurisdiction. If it gets into the air it can contaminate your entire house because asbestos fibers are super tiny. All in all, it's just not worth the risk.
This comment section just made me realize my bathroom vinyl tile adhesive Ive been trying to get up similarly may also have asbestos in it. I'd been planning to tackle the bathroom and overhaul it soon so big appreciation for y'all.
The technique used to remove the mastic was extremely dangerous. When dealing with asbestos or when in doubt the best technique is to keep it wet. I use wet towels and a commercial iron to steam the mastic to make it soft then scrape off. There is no friable material. Always air on the side of asbestos.
Boy do I remember doing THAT!!! Finally gave up and painted with an indoor/outdoor paint. Rough task after pulling carpet and padding that was stuck to the floor. The tack strip was melding with the floor in several places too!

Most likely has asbestos, It was common in building materials then. Asbestos is fire proof, an excellent insulator, resistant to chemicals, durable, and inexpensive. That is why it was used. Minimal exposure unlikely to do harm. It not radioactive.
get that tested. Also to help opt you could use a grinder and do it wet. That would help with airborne aspestos particles. Also grinding through the top layer of hardwood is a great way to refinish if you have more than 1/4 inch of wood.
About 40 years ago, I removed old flooring and a layer of tar paper from my kitchen floor. It was a nightmare. Took me about 4 days of hard work, didn't have a heat gun, soaked it with water to soften it and scraped it with a razor blade. Didn't work very well at all but I got it done. Never crossed my mind to use any kind of protection either.
Why do people like those floors that were in every old home ? They allow so much dust and air between gaps just put laminate flooring it’ll be 100X better
Forgot the show name but the little blonde on there would say " Why in the heck would they cover that up ? !! True, and personally I wouldn't stain it deep dark either. To each their own
Huge job, but you did it Lauren! Bravo, you are such a hard worker. Well done!🌷🌷

I thought that exact same thing. Wearing protection is great and all but I'd still be concerned. 😬
They are pretty smart in using protective gear. But I'm not sure if they knew the how or why to test those tiles.

Fantastic task. Anxious sound
For everyone whose asking what tool she uses: It's a multicutter tool, also called a finecutter.
Multicutter and hot glue gun?? I’ve got floors and they take so long as I’ve given up, I must check out this fine cutter/multicutter you mentioned
Lovely wood underneath!!! ❤️❤️❤️
You go Lauren!! You push through such tedious tasks without complaint. At least not that I’ve ever seen. 🤣. Can’t wait to see it all finished 💪😀🛠🧰🏠
Floors are looking good!!! Can't wait to see what's going to happen soon.

Be careful go be tested for asbestos
It's so satisfying to scrape stuff
Such a beautiful floor 🥰
Sooo much work. Did good job from what little I saw.
I would have liked to see more of the finished work.
check out the full video on the channel!!
Hope you check it for asbestos black cutback glue as more asbestos in it than the tile itself they even put it in the plaster
amazing job!!! those floors show character to that room...enhance that character.
Omg what a tedious task, fantastic job!!
I do the same work for years in an Old house very painfull but the result is beautiful
It’s not tar paper it’s asbestos
😰
The floors look amazing💯💯❤

Usually doesn’t show up in your lungs for 20 years.
Some guy’s dad worked removing asbestos for a living. Needless to say, he bit the dust.
Beautiful
What is the tool you are using to remove the tar paper? I was total to use a blow torch and scrapper. What are you using there?
Great Progress‼️👍🏼
Be nice if you could see what kind of tool he is fusing
A heat gun and a flat scraper.
Those tiles were asbestos.
Das war mein erster Gedanke!!
Awesome job Lauren! Beautiful floor!
That appears to be asbestos adhesive.

No need to test for it. That's definitely asbestos.
Usually when tile and the glue is black it is.

Always verify old tiles or vinyl have no asbestos before removing it!
What tool is that? I have old linoleum
I recall doing the same thing to an apartment I shared with friends. The stiletto marks on the parquet flooring were cute!
what tool did you use a heat gun?
That is a beautiful floor
I have the same issue on my 80 yr old wood floors in my kitchen. I accidentally found out that pinesol dissolves that gunk. 🙌🏽
Really...?!?!
Good to know! Ty
I realized that too. Soap & water !
I used scalding, boiling hot water. Let sit for 15-20 mins. Scrapes up easily.
Sanding and then a white wash color with semi matte varnish would look modern 🤩
OMG I've seen this done B4. My husband is a Craftsman carpenter & a client requested that. It was BEAUTIFUL ❤️
That's asbestos mastic
Look at that beautiful wood floor.

A lot of work but those floors are 🔥
Yea baby! Heat gunnin. Best non-invasive way to remove that crap.
115 yr old=danger
I now I did 3 etages wath is 13 rooms.on mine knee later on mine but. Monnikwork. Each 10 cm with a gasburner.
The safest way would have been to used a mastic remover and keep everything moist enough not to go airborne
The wood floor looks salvageable in the beginning of the room but towards the end there's too many gaps between the boards
That's because it wasn't a hardwood floor that was decking.
I have also did that ,and it was not fun !
Congratulations
2 parts SHORTS make jesus cry
def was asbestos in there
Una buena pulidora y luego un buen hidrolaqueado y queda para 100 años mas
The tar has asbestos fibers in it you should wear mask always removing.and when you sand that floor wear a respirator.
Vinyl tile over hardwood floor is dumb why??
I absolutely hated taking that shit off the floors, i was an apprentice and my boss was cheap so I just had the hand scraper lol

my big sister of you both know how to fix it the house OK you done a great job OK 👌
People over here worried about asbestos, I’m over here thinking about how there might not even be enough floor to refinish by the looks of it.
This is old and y’all are assuming she didn’t go her diligence before scraping
Asbestos
If my uncle saw me doing this sitting down, I would be in big trouble
My knees hurt just watching this
