In California, this price would get you a very average 2-3 bedroom home in an average neighborhood. If we are talking a coastal city, a run down 2-3 bedroom home in a sketchy neighborhood.
Make sure the roof is water tight as they call it lol. Basic utilities the same. Stabilize and just live there like it is. Maintain whats there. Make your self a designated realistic small area to live in during the cold months. Possibly in one room? Living in a super huge house doesn't have to cost you a fortune if you can use common sense and aren't rich. I've done it myself.

The bluebells & that beach so near is definitely a huge plus - but way too many turrets & it's just a bit too big !!! Of course for the right buyer who can afford the upkeep that would not matter. A great buy for that person ! After you have seen a few of these places & done the oohing & aahing you begin to realize exactly WHY there are so many left vacant to rot - it's very sad !

It didn't need to be 'brought up to date', certainly not if that means turning it into yet another plastic box, clean and bright, modern and 'comfortable', double glazing, underfloor heating, like somthing from a home furnishings magazine. I've seen so many beautiful old buildings ruined in that way; worse than a ruin. It needed a few repairs and people who care about its heritage. Perhaps it has that now. It was resold soon after the purshase along with some other adjoining property so I don't know what those newer owners plan to do with it, maybe they are planning a hotel. Hopefully they will be respectful of the castle.
THe advantage of a hotel is that more people can enjoy it compared to it being turned into a private home for a big family. Also, it may be far away from schools etc. Thus, a hotel could work. Why is it sad?
