BMW G310 GS Headlight Vibration Fix

  • So far the only thing I dislike about the BMW G310 GS is the significant vibration of the headlight. It's an issue with all the 310 GS's sold across the world and not just the one's in India. Frankly, I'm quite surprised how this passed BMW's quality checks.
    This is a video explaining the problem as well as the simple solution. Thanks to Altaf Khalifa from Garage 92 for helping me identify and fix this really irritating problem on the BMW G310 GS.

    I am so annoyed by the headlight, upcoming traffic signals
    Me all the time here in Mexico. I am preparing for a big motorcycle trip across the country and i am happy i found your fix, i am going to try it. I already tried to fix it by embedding the headlight in a rubber strip (the kind you use for insulation) but the vibration makes it work its way out of the spacing around the headlight. Thanks for sharing this! Like you said, this is not normal and not what you expect from BMW quality

      Glad this helped you. I just coulnd't stand the headlight and had to do something about it.

    I assumed the rubber mounting was to protect the bulb filament, although it seems that BMW went overboard on the rubber mount. The vibration induced headlight flickering is very annoying and possibly dangerous because it reduces my vision of the road at night as well as creating distracting flickering reflections. Human perception focuses on motion, so most of what I perceive at night are the false motions from the flickering headlight. I installed an LED headlamp and LED parking light and removed the soft rubber mounts. LED lamps are solid state with no filaments to break, and they're probably twice as bright as halogen headlights while consuming less power and generating less heat.

    Thanks for this, the beam moving is definitely annoying to the rider as well as others around. I need to try this on mine with washers.

    Thanks for this. Have the same issue and brought it up with BMW and they told me "that's just the way it is". Disappointing they haven't addressed this.

    This seems to be good fit.. I am also really irritated with this headlight vibrations and needless to say it creates alot of trouble for incoming vehicles also. Plz share your reviews after using it for sometime and if it's not affecting anything I might also get the same done

    the reason for the dampening insert is very important when going off-road, as this helps the plastic parts attached to the light and frame flex.. otherwize it could break and you will sit with bigger problems. that being said, if you do change it rather try get a hard rubber washer for the back and front, as the top of the light is not fixed to anything.

    Very good thinking, my friend, and thank you for sharing. I just got an "R" and have yet to ride it. I'll check if my roadster makes this lighting flicker. If it does, I'm following your example. Again, great problem-solving, and thanks for sharing. Happy trails ...

    BMW knows this but are adamant that the rubbers are there for a purpose. TVS of India actually build this bike so maybe it would be an idea to hear what they have to say. This is an annoying problem.

    I am getting my new g310 gs this weekend. Also notice all g310 gs in the dealership have this same problem. Agree with other people that putting a harder compound rubber would be better. There has to be something between the plastics for dampening. Cheers from Peru.

  • @srikantc2
    @srikantc2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I fixed it using rubber and bush used in Yamaha x max cover set. Basically the rubber is harder and the bush is smaller compared to the BMW. I also used some metal epoxy to mold the plastics in my bike to make it more stronger and rigid with higher windshield. I makes the bike solid feel with epoxy molds at plastics joints. After installing my high windshield it was vibrating. so I had opened all the plastic parts and prepared metal epoxy clay and layer all the plastic parts with fiber glass net and mold the epoxy layer once its cured and hardened. Then do some sanding and finishing it with black paint. All parts will be like metal strength and more rigid to take the higher windshield.

    Excellent diagnosis. I agree it's a terrible failure of design and one that makes the bike useless at night. If BMW does the right thing, they will recall and fix it. Nice workaround.

  • @mohba01
    @mohba01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    please put the rubbers back. motorcycle companies use "vibration shaker table" during its prototype stages, and put these dampeners there for a reason. maybe try finding harder rubber compound if it bothers you that much. Among polymers, rubbers exhibit greater damping capability compared to plastics, and especially this is a plastic to plastic fastener, metal washers will cause stress concentration at higher freq of vibration vs rubber, ie constant runs like on Highways, even though you might not hear it. Rubbers reduce vibration and sound whereas metals radiate it. If BMW put it in there its for a reason. like the extra bit of brake line which over looks the front mud guard for eg. to compensate for that extra bit for suspension travel.

      Nice article, but its a problem that needs to be addressed, I am about to pull out my light and investigate, if BMW used the grommets shown at the end of the video in his hand, then they look like any old grommet that just happened to be hanging around... I also see what appears to be a crush flanged sleeve, so untill I do my own appraisal of the situation I can not fully comment. I think the guy did a good job of showing how he did it. Where I live we run out of daylight very early evening, so riding in the dark is a must. To add the light output itself is pathetic to say the least.
      Update
      I have now done my own investigation, at 5:32 in the video you see 3 flanged bushes, I removed 2 mm from the length, this allows the rubber to be compressed more. thus taking up some of the play...easy fix... my results are on the G310 forum www.g310rforum.com/forum/194-bmw-g310-gs-general-discussion/8612-wobbly-headlight.html and facebook BMW G310GS page with photos.

    Also I noticed the clutch release and pickup on 1st gear is very not upto the level ... Untill I don't release full lever and rev the engine upto 3000 rpm it doesn't not .... Shift smoothly...unlike other bikes.. have u noticed this??

    • @DeelipMenezes
      @DeelipMenezes  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AAZVLOGS - Mumbai Daily Lifestyle Vlogger I think that’s due to the low flywheel weight of the engine. You need to give it a little gas when releasing the clutch as the flywheel isn’t heavy enough to have the inertia to handle the additional load on its own. The Duke 390 had a similar feel.

    • @mohba01
      @mohba01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It has nothing to do with the flywheel. The BMW stalls because of the Original equipment it comes with. if you flick the throttle fast itll stall as the tps connected to the ecm does not have a fuel controler like after markets units from Bazzaz, Power Commander etc to tell the ecm NOT to "cut spark" .. you'll need one of these plug and play things anyway if you intend to swap the exhaust with an aftermarket one..
