Thank you Jogie! It was the first time I've ever seen the spec sheets too and adds quite a dynamic, right? They were ruthless with their specifications... Screenshot the pages and have a look at them (I just skimmed the details) the actual requirements went much further. Thanks a lot for the comment, man!
Just imagine? Having some prolonged wear time with these pieces makes you think a lot deeper. And the thought kept recurring to me about how I would have loved a watch like this in high-school. Thinking about all those years I missed classes, sleeping in etc. Also just love how unpretentious it is (and how it would never attract attention in school). But hey, we have the next generation to think about! My W10 is definitely going to be handed down and the kid better wear the snot out of it and be grateful hahaha! ;) Thanks for the comment MR
I so wish to have the original documents tied to the MOD Seamaster and MilSub. It's just so fascinating seeing how the specs were laid out. Also considering that they're 50 years old and still feel so relevant! They look exactly the same the briefs that we get in the industry today. Thank you as always Eric! Also noticed that the ladies golf in Troon the other week was sponsored by Loch Lomond Whisky ;)
IDGuy The Seamaster300 mods ( soldered spring bars , circle T and caseback engraving) were done aftermarket mainly by Goldsmiths and varied hugely. You would need whiskey to follow the golf in Troon ;)
A very interesting review here my friend. The details from the Ministry Of Defence document from 1966 gave a fascinating insight into the instructions followed to assemble the original Smiths W10. This new Timefactors model looks like a fantastic interpretation of the watch and is no doubt in high demand. Great work as always! ✊
Thomas, you would be the one to comment on the RFP document. Having responded to far too many Canadian RFPs for a variety of technologies, it would be fascinating, albeit boring, to read the entire document.
Thank you as always, boet. The original specs really show us a different dynamic, right? Amazing. I'd love to find an archive for all of the original developments that went into the the watches we know today (like the Subs, Speedmasters etc) How cool would that be? Alas, most are under lock and key ;)
@@karl_m3013 The documents feel so much like the briefs that designers / engineers get too. Amazing to think that these are 50 years old and still look so relevant!
Thanks for creating this video. Singularly, field watches are what I consider my desired and go-to style. They underpin my desire as a youth to explore, hunt and fish. A field watch is what defines me. Mr. Platts has crafted several excellent representations, and someday I hope to acquire the one you sport today.
Always a pleasure Reed. I keep thinking how amazing it would have been to own one of these in high-school. It's been such a great time to experience these and see the value of field watches. Thank you as always for the comment, brother! (and keep your eyes peeled for W10's, they are out there!)
They are the business, man. Every day there's something more to their design that keep bringing me back. Speaking of which, I'm going to watch your take on the W10 after this. Hope you're well, brother!
That was a very enjoyable review. I picked up a PRS29AM a month or so ago. It will be interesting to see what movement is used in the next batches of the PRS29 given the shenanigans with Swatch/ETA and Swiss Competition Commission.
Thank you Larry! Eddie and I have been chatting about it. It's crazy how long you're expected to wait for batch orders now too... like 9 months. If I remember right he's going to look into Sellita movements next (COSC rated) for all the hand-wound pieces and sticking with Miyota's for the Automatics... but ETA...it's a shame.
Thank you for taking the time to watch, Junior. These write-ups and reviews always take us somewhere different ;) I really hope you're well and looking after yourself!
This would/should have been the Bond watch. Great comment. Had it been a Smiths rather than a Rolex, I wonder how different the two companies fortunes would have turned out. Also interesting to hear you state that you were not a field guy prior to your experience. I am still not a field watch guy even after purchasing a few very inexpensive, but good representations, to get a feel for them. The history of a watch or brand is not critical to me, although I appreciate it. The watch itself is what I am buying to enjoy. As always, a thought provoking video.
I bought this watch after waiting for quite a while, however it turned up with a misprinted dail , so I took it to my jeweller to make sure it was not my was not my own bias eyes, my jeweller put on the special jeweller goggles confirmed it was wonkey so I returned the watch with the hope that I would receive a replacement, the answer I received was I would not get a replacement as there was nothing incorrect with the dail. The interesting thing is my jeweller took some amazing photos, micro brand or not this company can do better !
Well done! I enjoy very much your focus on field watches as I find their simplicity and historicity very appealing. When I think field watch, I think infantry watch and the characteristics which differ from aviation watches should be highlighted. Most often, for me, it is a domed crystal so as not to reflect or mirror light. This is a particular infantry concern not shared by other tool watch genres. Thanks!
I got one of these when a number were found in a G4 store in the early 2000s. Each still in a little paper wrapper. Wish I had bought them all now I see what's happened to the asking prices!
It’s a beautiful watch, but trying to purchase from their site is a nightmare. The owners need to step it up and meet the demand and be open for more than 15 minutes every month. It’s a huge turn off.
Thanks for this Jared. You're not the first person to make complaints about his page (as far as I know) It's tough for Eddie to meet demands. The real issue he battles with are the movement suppliers. Case and dial manufacturing is simple, but the waiting time for movement batches takes about 6-9 months, it's ridiculous. He also told me that they usually come in a group of 300 units. Now with everything that's been going on with ETA and the bug that's been travelling around, delays are piling up. And its just meeting demand that seems to be quite difficult for him to handle. We've chatted about putting more focus into in-demand pieces only (which seems to be working better) but hey, life is always a waiting game ;)
IDGuy Thank you for the insight regarding the movements. That’s a perspective I never considered and helps to understand why operations are difficult for a microbrand. I hope things become easier because Timefactors produces an excellent product, and the more people who have access to it the better !
Totally agree on the perceived quality of the Time factor field watches. Especially considering the use of ETA handwound movements in some of their models. Had the air ministry model, but did not "connect" with it...quality and size where great nevertheless.
During the course of my tenure over at tz (15 years) I’ve had the 29a in all its iterations -the mk1 (closed 4 ) multiple times (maybe 4 )off my esteemed fellow member velorum and then the mk2 with the open 4 about the same number of times . Is the mk1 with the softer acrylic dial and fixed bars superior (it is most certainly more faithful to the w10) or the milky ringed sapphire and drilled lugs of the mk2 ? Regardless after all my watch hunts I have cyclically and ironically came back around to this watch again because of this very video . Thank you ID guy !
This was the first mechanical watch I bought and it's still in regular use, terrific piece. I got the plexi version, which I love - which also sports fixed bars which is a bit ambiguous. No chance to fit a bonklip here and then
Oh wow the original Timefactors W10? They are special... It really is such a versatile piece. I'd love to find a pristine vintage model one day and compare the two. Thanks a lot for the comment TL!
@@ID-Guy Yeah, the PRS29a first edition. Found mine in Finland for very fair 280 Euro via Chrono24. I guess aside of crystal and bars the design remained untouched.
@@ID-Guy apart from the made in England on the w10 vs the Great Britain and the tritium vs luminova they are inconspicuously close in comparison . Almost like a fresh nos or to draw a parallel; a new bb54 and an old Tudor sub almost identical proportions give or take and small aesthetic differences - then again the mk1 29a is over 10 years old now it’s bordering an “appreciating classic “
Is it possible to source the defence specification document somehow? I can't find it on Google. And I've bought this watch. Would like to have the document and print it.
Many thanks for another tremendous review mate; I LOVE your considered commentary and perfect delivery! Out of interest, where did you get that wonderful green NATO because when I can finally land both the W10 and Air Ministry Smiths I intend to pair it with the same green strap ideally. Many thanks again, James
It's likely from the timefactors website, same as the watch. I think they go by "NATO 2014 strap" or something to that effect, where you can then select 18mm (in these watches' case) green NATOs.
Can't believe I've ended up with a PRS-29A after selling Omegas, IWC, and others... this little 36mm beauty though.... the quality, the charm, the dimensions... man do we need any other watch.. it makes me wonder if i really need that "grail" Explorer 114270
Apropos of Martin Bacon's comment, below; Eddie's eccentric marketing policy does offer us paupers an exciting taste of what it must be like to really want a Rowlecks Sports Watch... And want it now!
IDGuy I can see the irony in pursuit of a watch but it's a bit of a pisser when all you want is a bloody NATO strap! Really enjoy your work, ID, keep it up, Mate.
I have tried to buy his watches multiple times on his website. I have done it within his time constraints which are onerous. His site declines my credit card even though there is nothing wrong with it. He knows this is a problem with his site but he doesn’t fix it because he is somehow miraculously selling all the watches he wants to. Just not to me. So I gave up. It isn’t worth the hassle. I am sure I am not the only one who has this experience.
I've had trouble with my credit card on some sites while using Firefox. The Microsoft browser (currently Edge) did not have an issue with the same sites. Just a thought.
There have been so many glitches with TH-cam lately. First my Livestreams were cut short and processing was affected, and now it looks like the latest bug is the subtitles... Usually they autofill (and don't require my input at all to work) I'm really sorry about the inconvenience Fabrice, I wouldn't even know where to start when putting the text in but I'll see what can be done.
@@ID-Guy no problem, Sir :-) please continue with the good job! I am a newcomer, browsing your channel ; when I am done, maybe I will ask you for some reviews such as the new Serica California or March Lab Mansart. Have a nice day, 3pm for me in Jakarta, Indonesia
The only thing I don’t like about this watch is the same thing I don’t like about the speedmaster moonwatch sapphire vs the hesalite one. On the sapphire model there is some sort of white ring on the border of the glass and this PRS 29 suffer from the same issue. I wonder if a manufacturing process exists to produce high domed sapphire glass without this ring effect.
There was a 39 mm version of this gem, not long ago... Eddie kindly explained there wasn't much interest for it, so he kept doing only the 36 mm. I know it is period more accurate, but some of us, because of our wrist's shape &/or size, just don't match with 36 mm. Damn shame if you ask me... IDG, your videos, they are truly "sump'n else"! Nevertheless, the best one so far was, and the one yet to be surpassed, the first that I saw: Brando / Apocalypse / GMT review.

I enjoy that both speak properly. Language is used so lazily these days, it's reassuring and refreshing when people speak well. I grew up in a particularly working class area but my mother in particular made sure to teach me the importance and value of being able to speak properly.
The only place to buy them new is the Timefactors website. It only opens once a month or so, only for as long as stock lasts (or a certain number of orders have been made) which these days is only a few minutes so you really have to rush your order to have any chance. This model is currently unavailable until early next year while they wait for new Sellita movements. They pop up used occasionally online as well. They definitely hold their value though. Good luck.
You make a persuasive argument, and yet they don't grab me. Yes, the field watch has deep horological roots, but I want something a bit less plain on my wrist. As for my kids winding and watch everyday, fuggetaboutit.
Looking back at this video after the recent WWW clomage issue by Timefactors, JULY 2024. To me (and obviously a lot of others since they sell 200 watches in a few minutes every time the website opens) they do what they do extremely well and for very reasonable prices. Why then are so few of their watches looked at by the so called "reviewers" with big subs?? ID guy has always acknowledged the company but for others they seem not to exist. Eddie Platts who owns Timefactors doesn't give away freebies nor does he pay anyone to "review" his offerings. He has no need to. Is there anything in this that the buying public needs to address? You be the judge, I've already made up my mind. 😉😉
