He kind of gives this vibe of amassing all the knowledge and heritage of previous generations. Weird, but it makes sense that they manufacture these incredible timepieces. I also like that they don't overthink the movement, it really is a nicely finished and regulated ETA, that is nothing to be embarrassed about, but also doesn't make owning and maintaining the watch super expensive.

      I somewhat disagree ☺️ You are paying for a highly customised hand finished watch. The additional man hours that goes into the finishing means that you are getting effectively a hand made product. I own and have owned brands like rolex and omega and as I get older I appreciate product made with more attention to detail

    • @Retro_Yak
      @Retro_Yak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Philippe_R maybe the case, dial, and hands are hand finished but that movement is a different story. For someone that worked at final quality control at rolex he certainly has let his standards drop for his own company. Take a look at 7:12 there is an enormous scratch across the balance shock setting. Even on a rolex with no display backing this would not be acceptable.

    Maybe I’m just an absolute peasant, but I really don’t get the hate for ETA movements, especially the higher end versions and more so if they’ve been tweaked, decorated and regulated. Don’t get me wrong, I understand an in house movement is king and rightly so. But ETA are tough, reliable, serviceable everywhere and “workhorses” as everyone seems to put it.
    I’d definitely be interested in having a British name on my wrist. Overall presentation is lovely. At this price point a bracelet would be nice, but given how good they look and how little known they are, I’d definitely be tempted.

    • @trevbarlow9719
      @trevbarlow9719 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a personal tastes thing. Some people like having a company which makes almost all the components. It's a fairly new phenomenon. Personally, I'm a huge ETA fan, but I don't have a large collection. If I had a larger collection, it might bother me if I had more than 2-3 pieces with the same base movement and that can be difficult to avoid with ETA since they are so common.
      If I were to pay over 2k for an ETA piece, I would want the manufacturer to have done significant modifications to it.

    In terms of finish on those hands, he is miles away from like Tudor. Where is the asking price of £3,100 coming from? Like you said, there are a lot of watchmaking companies that's gonna bankrupt after the COVID-19 Pandemic. Cut the prices - make watches more affordable - learn from Chinese; Huawei, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme. Started cheap once they built some reputation they slowly increased the price. I can design watch - source ETA movement and put it together in China and ask for £2000... This is not the way IMHO... Beautifull reissue watches btw I love it.

But it seems they love a loyal supporter and my guess is you need to drop about 50k and buy a date-just, to be part of the AD’s ‘club’ these days; or pay hyped 🆙 used market flipper prices paying 50% over list. You can either go one of two ways if you refuse the above, get a Tudor or similar (less priced solid watches) or go big and pay similar asking prices for a Vacheron, JLC, AP, Patek etc. Trouble is the lure - or safety - of price maintenance, as well as a desirable timepiece, means they appear to be happy with the current status quo.

      @ausleyschevelle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An off the shelf ETA, wholesale price, can be as cheap as a $50 or as much as $400 depending on the grade. An in-house movement costs about $2,000,000 in R&D and tooling costs (minimum), so divide that by how many pieces you make. The cheapest in-house watches have the highest development numbers -- something like an Omega, FC, Baume & Mercier, etc. If this company is only making 500-1,000 pieces, you can bet an in-house movement would add at least $5,000 to the price, but probably more.

    ETA movement from an unknown brand with no real history for $4900 CAD and the case is a copy of a Radiomir case. Imagine how hard it would be to resell this thing if you needed to sell it and the loss you would incur buying this thing new. In the words of the Pontiff, it's a SHITTERRRRRRRR. I bought a PAM183 off Chrono24 with full box papers even the plastic around the case for $4300 CAD. That's a watch and a brand with real history and although the movement is an ETA movement, it's historically accurate to the pocket watch movements used by Panerai in the past. I would easily recuperate my money if I ever needed to resell it.
    Save your money and buy something that has real history and will hold or somewhat hold its value. Avoid the shitters. Also just want to note for this price, the watch is competing with Tudor. That watch is absolute GARBAGE compared to anything Tudor makes. FEARS = BREMONT

    • @Eisenhower42

      Damn, dude. Try decaf coffee and watching less Paul Pluta. He's rubbing off on you, and that's not a good thing. You can disagree with the price point on this re-imagined brand, but calling it garbage because of an ETA movement and high price point is just Plutonian hyperbole. It's a new brand finding its way. We should admire that, not condemn it.

      Luxury products are so overpriced, i consider it a scam. Once you find out how cheap the movements can be made, they put in them and how cheap the rest is, you question what you are actually paying for. Most dont even make in house movements and buy from eta or sellita, a mass manufacturer of movements. Orient does their movements and lots of finishing inhouse and can be had for under 500$ with very good finishing.

    It was a delight watching this video. Wonderful story and interesting watches that suggest a bright future for the brand. Some viewers expressed concern about an ETA movement at this price level. Each to their own but I prefer exclusivity, quality and originality. I have a Direnzo and don't think any less of it because it has a bought in movement. So long as the watch keeps good time I'm not particularly concerned what movement is inside the case. I also think exhibition case backs are overrated. I have a JLC but don't look at the movement much, if ever. The trend is towards bigger cases at present but I feel that 38mm is perfect - a lot of thought has gone into each aspect of the design of these watches and the video gives you a glimpse of this. Well done Adrian. No mention of Rolex and the video was much better for it. Best of luck to Nicholas, I'm looking forward to seeing how the brand develops.

So many people in the watch world are breathing watches before they even to claim a brand new line of watches. The price point of these is what triggered me to comment. If Fears are 3K then Seiko have to be starting price at 100K.

      Rather have a better watch than pay thousands extra for "heritage". It's fine if some people don't mind spending extra for that but I don't see an issue comparing them to other watches from micros

    Great video. Coming from Bristol I know all about FEARS watches, so was a little surprised that Bristol wasn’t even mentioned when talking about the heritage of the company. Especially as they started in and spent most of their history in Bristol. Even down to most of their watches are named after Bristol areas and landmarks.

      Terrific video indeed. Just wish Adrian had gone to the trouble to actually "get dressed" for this interview. "Sack of potatoes" or not. Nothing a blazer and cleaned pressed dress shirt from the dry cleaners couldn't have solved. Ho'hum... Jus' sayin'.

    Adrian, you have become an indispensable steward of all things watches. George Plimpton used to refer to himself as a Participatory Journalist. While unobtrusively availing yourself of all modern technologies, you do an incredible job of bringing us into your journey. And it's a gift to be here with you.

    Im 68, and hadn’t heard of the brand before, at least I’m a bit more educated than this morning, think the market was flooded with so many watches, unless one knows what one wants, then it might get hard, there were only so many ways to reinvent the wheel, I wouldn’t pay that much for a watch, and wished you well with your brand design, as clearly there’s a market somewhere for being inventive in creative design.

    I think it's pretty disingenuous to say that it's the same company from 1850s... it's the same name, that's it. It isn't the same company. Plus using ETA movements in £3k watches? Who is this for? Tudor, Omega are building in-house movements for this price with COSC/METAS. I know which one I'd rather...

    3000 for an ETA movement? I can buy a slightly used Omega or Datejust for those 3000... Seriously? BUt there are idiots who will spend money on them regardless.

    Sadly I have to say ,that for over 3,000£ ,very,very few watches will be sold! For that kind of money most watch interested buyers will go for names that have more recognition! I mean it's beautifully manufactured and a lot of craftsmanship going into, but although it's long history it'll be only a no name company,a niche watch. He should have started with less expensive watches and building up the recognition of the name with quality. And then gradually increase the prices.

    Nice stylish piece of contemporary/classic design. Case looks 90% panerai homage, dial and hands is 99% unique. The result is rather impressive. Brand has a history - it’s a great advantage. I shall buy this watch if it will be possible in Russia. But it will not.

    I'd be very interested in your opinion around cost and value of a micro-brand like Fears and a similar costing big brand watch. I find it an interesting struggle - "do i buy a $4-5,000 watch from Fears that i know will be almost un-sellable in the 2nd hand marketplace or a similar cost watch from a big brand that i know i'll at least be able to get the majority of my $ back on if i decide to make a change"?

    I don't mean to take anything away from this guy but this whole story seems a little suspect. Like this dude never knew his family had been involved with a watch company for 130 years which closed a decade or so before he was born? He decided to go through school for economics and PR and just sort of fell into this because it was his passion? Reminds me a bit of the whole Bremont "we just happened to land in this guy's field" thing.
