  • My thoughts on Stephen King's magnum opus "The Stand."
    My rating: 100 / 100
    TL;DR: Nothing short of awe-inspiring, beautiful, and captivating. An intentionally delicately-paced epic with a deeply cathartic ending.

    fun fact: The only reason the original version was cut by nearly 400 pages, was due to the fact that the publisher couldn't physically print a book that large. It was too big to bind.

    • @TheGlassesPush
      @TheGlassesPush  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's bonkers. Reading about what was cut makes me sad for people who didn't get the full story.

    • @SGSL89
      @SGSL89 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Josh Edwards I have the uncut version and in the preface Stephen King says that the 400 pages were taken out due to accounting reasons. The cost of the 400 pages drove the price of the book too high for what they thought a SK book could sell for.

    • @tilberry19

    The stand is easily my favorite book of all time. I was so happy at its length and pacing because I wanted to stay in that world with those characters for as long as possible. In that way it kind of spoiled me for most any other books of this kind because when I’m sucked I totally I any other character/world driven books even if they’re decent in length I always walk away feeling slightly disappointed that I couldn’t stay longer. Regardless, I highly recommend this book as well and if you haven’t read it, reading it during a pandemic certainly hits much different. I’m re-reading it now and it feels very different in Covid/post-COVID times

    Believe I read the version that was less pages. The character development and their backstories is so integral, but something must be said for the way the reader is immersed into so many different environments within the story. Reading through the chapters, you feel as though you've been on this quest through so many of America's landscapes.

    The Stand is King's magnum opus. No American writer builds characters as well as he does, and in the Stand, we are rewarded with a complete cast that we come to know so well, that they seem as real as the people in our own lives. It is a saga of sin and redemption, and the ultimate battle of good versus evil.

    I loved your review! I just bought THE STAND a week ago, recommended by a Barnes & Nobles employee who happened to be a Stephen King lover. I ask this man to recommend me a Stephen King book 'cause I had never read a novel of his and wanted to give it a try since I have always heard he is such an amazing story teller. So here I am, with like 5 new books and not knowing which one to start with, so I without thinking pick THE STAND from my shelf and take it with me to bed, but then I thought: I wanna see a review of it, just to make sure it is truly "the best book Stephen King ever wrote!", and I bumped into your review and BAM! you convenced me, you just passed your love for it right to me. I have read this book some time ago. It was one hefty book and you could almost use the hardbound edition as a murder weapon. There is substance behind the heft, though. Not a single word was wasted and Stephen King's talent in developing believable characters that are almost tangible is awesome. The Stand is definitely one of my top 5 favorite Stephen King novels, despite criticisms of it having a weak ending.

    • @TheGlassesPush
      @TheGlassesPush  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally, I found the ending to be one of King's best, but I totally understand how polarizing it is. But yes, for all the criticism King receives for his lengthy tomes, "The Stand" brings characters and the world to life in startling ways. The book's slow build to ruin is as heartbreaking as it is inevitable.

    Still the best apocalyptic fiction I've ever read. The only book that comes closer to me so far is Joe Hill's The Fireman, which is quite telling since Joe is Stephen's son. If you haven't read it yet I can't recommend it enough. Some of the scenes in the novel were inspired by The Stand as well.
    Great review, by the way.

    • @TheGlassesPush
      @TheGlassesPush  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lawrence Arboleda thanks for watching! Actually, I have read The Fireman, and I was pretty disappointed in it. It felt, to me, like it took too many beats and ideas and characters from The Stand, as I read them in very close proximity to each other. I can't quite decide if it was the execution of these ideas was my main quibble or what, but my main takeaway was that I was disappointed. That said, I will forever love Joe Hill for his comic series Locke and Key; that is one inventive and gripping story, laden with mystery and horror in a wholly unique way.

    • @lawrencearboleda6448
      @lawrencearboleda6448 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a fair criticism. As for me, it read like a modern imagining of The Stand. Also loved how some of the protagonist's thoughts and actions were inspired by her love for Mary Poppins.

    This is definitely a book that is better the second time around. I originally read it when I was 20, and I enjoyed it. I’m 40 now and just finished rereading it. It most definitely resonated better this time around. Stephen King is hit or miss with me. His endings are pretty weak, but his character development is second to none. The Stand is so perfect with character development, that it makes up for what I consider to be another lackluster ending.

That said, The Road is very haunting and affecting; its writing is spartan, but the images it paints are vivid all the same. That one is probably your next best bet, though it is WILDLY different. Another recommendation would be Cat's Cradle; while I can't really go into WHY it may be similar without spoiling things, I can tell you that Kurt Vonnegut was a genius, and that this book and Slaughterhouse Five are both just absolute gifts.

I was reading events from the books on the actual date that they were occurring in the book .Such as when the person who had an intellectual disability was sent to Las Vegas to spy. I didn't like the book as much. I found "IT" better. I fell out of love with characters. I wanted to read about Stu and Nick but they weren't really doing anything. And the Trash Can Man, sigh, i applaud Stephen King for being able to pull of a manic person, but he was one of the most boring characters for. I really liked the starting and up until the flu but later i just found hard to finish it. I skipped a lot of it.
    I would chose "IT" over it.

      @TheGlassesPush  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SonySlyer yeup, the audiobook is M-O-O-N, that spells amazing! My only quibble with IT is that the individual encounters with the entity feel a little monotonous after a while. Of course, they offered glimpses into the characters' psyches, but I felt like the points King was making with those bits could've been condensed. That's the gift and the curse of King: he's very unfiltered. That said, IT is a top 5 King novel for me. Granted, I've "only" gotten through about 15 or so of his books.

    im reading this book now and i dont understand how if it was written in 1978, stephan king mentions madonna 's material girl and spuds mckenzie . who was a famous dog from budweiser commercials in the mid 80s. what gives?

    • @TheGlassesPush
      @TheGlassesPush  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      katkal3 what you have is the uncut/extended edition, which was released in the 80s. King took the liberty of updating dates/references during this process. I also did this version of the book, and I can't imagine experiencing The Stand in its original form. One example of something that was only in the extended reissue is the "no great loss" chapter, which you'll definitely know when you've reached that. That chapter is one of my favorites. Additionally, I believe the last chapter of the book was added in the extended edition, and that chapter features one of my favorite lines in all literature.

      D.M.Mitchell is one of the best mystery/suspense writers and every his book is different.My favourite from his is book called Mouse and then Flinder's field but all of them are great and btw stephen king is one of his influences, Tammy cohen has great psychological thrillers, the most recent Don't close your eyes by Holly Seddon-dark family drama.I like my thrillers dark and disturbing and unpredictable but real.I like complex characters, stories that are like puzzle where you don't know what is going on till the end and realistic situations.It's hard for me to enyoy in something fantastic and unreal and that's the main reason why i stay away from fantasy books and movies but like i said i will try and then see.I hate werewolves, monsters, ghosts,vampyres books and movies and i will read it only with gun pointed in my head but.I'm scared of real people, psychopats.I don't need monsters.People are monsters.I' ve seen It miniseries and it was awful, boring, stupid transformations.I hope that Stand is nothing like IT.

      Dan Schaal - thanks for watching and sharing! Complete and Uncut seems like the only way to go. The fact that the "no great loss" chapter was not part of the original release is staggering. And yes, I completely agree the start of the novel is so essential... Even though you know that so many will die, your heart still aches for each of the main characters as they lose their families. Such a beautiful and audacious work of fiction.

    just watched this on dvd and thought it was 6 hours wasted. Whether the book is different or not but most of my criticism is based on the story detail. The best credible part was the first, The Plague. With Stephen king's name on it I expected to be entertained but was shocked at how bad it was. The first part was good and plausible and that gave me false hope for the rest. Mentally the viewer is made to work hard to make the whole story credible, it lacked continuity of ideas and actions and was very selective on the mechanics which creates logical anomalies. It seems to me that this series was aimed at the Religious and their faith would carry them through. Logically you could miss out most of the last three parts and skip to the last twenty minutes where the baddies blow themselves up because that would have happened anyway without all the other story line. I could go a lot further in detail but I have wasted enough good time already....

    • @TheGlassesPush
      @TheGlassesPush  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Taylor thanks for commenting! I've never seen the miniseries, but I've heard mainly negative things. The thing with King is that a lot of his books have elements that are entirely based on thoughts and feelings and intuitions in the characters' heads. The more psychological aspects of his stories often seem to suffer in the adaptations. The switch from a pandemic scenario to a more spiritual conflict likely wasn't handled as well in the series. But again, your note on the ending is something that seems pointless on face value, but with the proper context, I feel like it's really impactful. King isn't for everyone, and even though this is the usual favorite among his books, it doesn't resonate with everyone. It's a long book, and since you have misgivings about the plot already, it's likely not a wise investment of time. All the same, thanks for sharing, and thanks for watching.

      Alexander thanks for watching and commenting! It really depends on the maturity of the person, and every family differs. That said, there is certainly lots of adult language, violent situations, sexual content, and a rape scene. It's a very heavy book, so it all comes down to maturity and the ability to put everything in perspective. If you have any other questions, I'm happy to help, but alas, there's no one-size-fits-all response.

      The Glasses Push pretty good and detailed. This is my frst Stephen King book. A little bit slow now but Yea I hear the 2nd half of his books are worth it and has great pay off....

      There is *a lot* of character development, so if that's not your thing, it will take quite a while to hit a big plot. Why I love this book is because it takes the time to establish a world, so when bad things happen and people die, I actually care about it. I know it's a beast, and it's a slow build, but hopefully, you'll find the payoff rewarding.

      The Glasses Push There is such a thing as interesting non sleep inducing character development though. I just dont care about any of them so far. Id rather he gets to the meat of the story and integrate the development of relevant characters into that. Its too overindulgant and my guess is thats what the publishers thought when they cut 500 pages from the original book.

    You gotta be kidding. Sure, the first part is fun--who doesn't love a good Fall-of-Rome story? But then it degenerates into a 700 page Chick tract. It has the most two-dimensional characters since Flatland.

    • @TheGlassesPush

      I appreciate your dissenting opinion. It's nice for it not to be an echo chamber. I do think the characters do evolve over the story, but more importantly, I still remember so many characters from this book, and I would be hard-pressed to name even 3 characters from any other book I've read or listened to over the past 2 years. Something about these characters made them stick in my mind, and I celebrate that. Do you think the romance elements detracted so much from the latter parts of the book? Either way, I appreciate you watching and commenting!

      @@TheGlassesPush Sorry if I came across as too harsh. I wrote a review of the story from the point of view of Randall Flagg. I hate sickeningly sweet characters and magical stereotypes, and I found it started filling up with them as soon as Starkey shoots himself. Mother Abagail was especially annoying, with Tom Cullen a close second. I found the bomb plot a cheap literary device to keep the plot alive in the face of so many uninspiring characters, like the angst-ridden cutie and Stu the Invulnerable...it goes on, but this is no Lord of the Rings.
