- Can we break 90? - EVERY SHOT (best course I ever played)
A round of golf at Royal St David's golf course in Harlech, North Wales. It's a very scenic par 69, championship links course that was 6219 yards from the men's yellow tees.
The green fees ranged from £65-100 for a round in August 2023. Buggies were priced at £30. The course was in amazing condition on this day with immaculate tee boxes, fairways and greens.
It was my first time playing at Royal St David's Golf Club which was easily the best golf course I've ever played.

I'm James, a golfer with a dodgy swing playing off a 13.1 hcp (going up).
I've had a long layoff in 2023 with hardly any golf played for 4 months. So things are less stable on the scoring side right now.

Wikipedia info about this course:
Royal St. David's Golf Club is a golf club in Harlech on the west coast of Wales .
The club was founded in 1894 by William Henry Moore and Harold Finch-Hatton, the fourth son of the Earl of Wincheilsea and Nottingham. He had seen St Andrews Links in Scotland and St George in Sandwich , Kent , and thought Wales should not be left behind. When the track was completed, a representative from St Andrews, Royal St George's and Royal Liverpool were invited to the opening.
St David's received the designation Royal from Edward VII in 1908 and Edward VIII , then the Prince of Wales , was captain of the club in 1934.
The course is located in the dunes and has a par of 69. The back tees were extended in 2008.
Harlech Castle, built by King Edward I of England in the 13th century , can be seen from the course.
If you're playing links golf in the wind, you really need to have the bump-and-run in your weaponry - instead of hitting a high pitch/chip from 30-50 yards you grip down on a 7 or 8 iron and hit the ball in low. Much more controllable. Course looked lovely with the castle above it.
You're right, I don't have that bump and run shot. Once I changed to grip down on the SW those shots were much better on the back 9 👍👍
Great video James, as a member at RSD, thanks for a fair appraisal of our beautiful course. It's a tough links challenge in any weather. You played a very shrewd round, and even with a couple of triples, you did brilliantly to avoid bunkers and the treacherous rough for the most part. Our grounds staff do an amazing job maintaining the course throughout the year, and it really showed on your Vlog. Cheers
Cheers Sparks, I knew I had to plot my way around otherwise it would have been easily 100+. A shame I forgot how to putt on this day but that's the way golf goes sometimes!
In a way, I'm glad that it was a 2 to 3 club wind as that's a big defence of links golf courses. The front 9 was especially challenging as on nearly every hole the wind switches around. I'm definitely looking forward to playing your amazing course again in the future 👍👍👍
Love your temperament, i'm the crazy guy on the course who is usually throwing his golf clubs in frustration
James, my Dad and I have been sharing some quality time watching a bunch of your videos, I only recently got in to golf and your videos are so relatable and enjoyable. Keep up the great work.
My Dad pointed out that you always play by yourself, so we’d love to invite you for a round with us, a stableford at our home course, our treat. Not sure how to contact you directly so I hope you see this and would be interested!
Great video James, very enjoyable round!!!...
"People off to the beach" crikey, looks a bit grim for that lol great video yet again, well done 🙂
Honest golf is still good to watch,, nice wok Sir!
Well down James! Your enthusiasm and love of the game comes shining through. Keep it going. Such a refreshing attitude.
Love the No Drama😊
Your shots to the green from tricky yardages (40 to 70) remind me of my own failing to lay up to a comfortable full-wedge range. I always seem to just hit as far as I can versus playing to 90 to 100 yards. 🤷🏽♂️
Great video James 👏🏻👏🏻
awesome video as always! You've about given me enough courage to do my own videos soon enough. Even your earlier videos were great, but I really love how your style has evolved to what it is now. Can't wait till the next. Cheers from Canada
Good luck with your channel! Thanks for watching :-)
What a beautiful course. Castle in the background is rad. Never seen that before.
Couple tough holes but nice birdie on No. 5 and solid pars on No. 7, 11 and 18. Enjoyed the video. Very pleasant round despite the windy conditions.
Man I’ve been watching your videos for a while. Major improvement. Your putting is on point. 👍
Absolutely Beautiful! Here's to you James!
Beautiful landscape & course!! I was impressed with your ability to not lose yourself in the atmosphere. Enjoying the course is all that matters, nice birdie!
Very Nice video👍
I played there this year it’s an absolutely fantastic course really enjoyed it. Got to say you’ve put together a very nice blog and when I played it I couldn’t really figure out how to do it from what others had put online, but your footage is absolutely fantastic, and that is the way the course plays.
Me too, I didn't get a feel for the course from the other TH-cam videos out there. I think a lot of people have their cameras too low down missing out on the views 👍👍
James! Keep your right arm tucked in on your backswing! Read Ben Hogan's book, Enjoyed the video! Keep at It mate.
Yet another great video James 👍. Love the way you enjoy your golf no matter how the round is going !
Another great video James. Shame about the wind. Keep them coming.
Got to play 17 courses on my amazing bucket-list golf trip to the UK last summer. Royal St. David’s & Clwb Nefyn were my 2 favorites in your lovely country. Keep the great content coming. Love your channel. 🇺🇸⛳️👍
Loving this new format James, keep it up brother! Cheers from Canada
I played there earlier in the year! Very nice course and i played quite well for me! I cant wait to give it another go!
Another great vlog from you. Thanks for sharing with us.
Well played James, proper links wind's really do make things different, but really well done with sticking with it, the course is on my bucket list to play.
Looking forward to the next one.
I booked this round 4 days beforehand and it was forecast to be very mild. At least the rain held off! lol
Enjoyed the video, good knock with superb views.
I've yet to actually watch this video but I love your shoes, man.
Footjoy Traditions from a couple of years ago. Soooooo comfy :-)
Another great video. Nice birdie as well.
Well played and great video.
Love your video's. Nice putt on the 5th for birdie, nice shot.
If I 3 putted that one the score could have really gone south! haha 👍👍
Very nice video. Probably your best so far on the channel. Beautiful course as well. Thanks for posting.
Cheers Randy, I think it's my best video posted too. Links golf is supposed to be played in conditions like this. No wind makes it too easy with the extra rollout. Thanks for watching :-)
Very good score especially considering the wind.
Cheers mate, I was expecting 100+ when I felt the wind in the car park. Approach shots play so much harder in conditions like this 👍👍
Played there 3 weeks ago and loved the course which was in great condition, a tough course made harder on a windy day and lots of danger with the Heather and gorse !!! 😊
Thanks for another introduction to Welsh golf courses. It was a beauty.
Plus your game seems to getting better.
Very nice bird.
If I putted a little better this could have been a much better round. Always the way! :-)
Lovely video, lovely course.
Not to bad of play in that wind , if your down my neck of the woods I’ll sort you out a game in Tenby 👍
Cheers Barry, things could have got really out of hand on the scoring side if I was in bunkers! lol 👍👍
Best one yet! Enjoyed the format a lot.
Cheers, not sure if the gps map should be a bit smaller but it makes the vids easier to follow 👍👍
Beautiful course!
Well done James. The course is beautiful.. Keep grinding..
Cheers George, thanks for watching 👍👍
On another day a few of those bogies would have been pars. Another good video 👍🏻
I couldn't buy a putt on the back 9. It sometimes goes like that for everyone! 👍👍
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 we have all had rounds like that. Loving your regular content, missed it whilst you were away
Tough conditions there James, makes you think hard about each shot you play. Best get use to it with winter approaching 😅😅
Great views
Good Stuff ! you could see even on the early holes - the greens had you beat !
Tough putting in the wind like that. You can lose all feel which happened more than once! haha 👍👍
HI James a great video again , i was lucky enough to play there last week on a twilight ticket, absolutely outstanding course . Unfortunately the amazing greens beat me up too .couldnt fault the course the pro shop or the facilities all were A1. My home course is in north wales too ill give you an oy oy if i see you out and about :)
Nice one. Yeah, some of the greens were massive which makes it tricky if you're not in tight 👍👍
Nice round
Great video James, I'm still looking forward to when I get my first Birdie ... even a par would be nice! 😅
Keep grinding pal 👍👍
Cap on, cap off, jumper on and jumper off. I was beginning to think there were 3 or 4 of you playing!
I like to tee off without the cap on as it looks better on the thumbnails 👍👍
Travelled up last week for 3 nights played Nefyn, St David’s and Aberdovey.
Royal St David’s the best course I’ve played everything superb and a tough test if you catch it on a windy day.
I haven't played Aberdovey yet. But RSDs was much tougher than Nefyn for sure! 👍👍
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 RSD defiantly the hardest. We had no wind when we played Aberdovey so could have been so different but wind is the courses defence for sure.
Keep up the content great videos
James…another enjoyable video…..thank you……I would like to say your practise swing at the start of the second nine is more relaxed…more shoulder turn ,keeping your left arm as straight as you can on the backswing and also a good tempo….keep it up….I look forward to the next video…cheers
I might be doing a full swing overhaul this winter. Last time it didn't work out but hopefully I will stick with it this time 👍👍
Looks great course. Will play it next time I'm in North Wales should be next August will be a nice birthday treat for me. I may have missed it but how much did your green fee cost ?
It's £100 or they do a twilight for £65 from 3pm which is great value. I try and play it every year and am there next week. Very tough course but the cheaper green fee is great value.
Great video
Fantastic course. How much was it to play?
Have you changed your putting technique? Hands look very high
Green fees were £65-100 on the day I played. I haven't changed my putting technique but I've changed putters again recently. I'm really going down the putter rabbit hole now! lol 👍👍
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 well worth the money
hi mate have you changed to the 2 ball putter? were putting great before
I'm chopping and changing again now which isn't good for consistency! SMH
15:35 It’s a shame local planners allowed that concrete monstrosity to be built in such a beautiful location 😢.
Looks like something from soviet Russia!
The local welsh council lock up the English who can’t afford their council tax on their second homes in that tower.
I was thinking the same thing, especially with the castle being in the same shot
Or James gets locked in the tower if he has any more 4 putts.😂@@timdench2583
Really enjoy ur videos however I didn’t see you tell us the price?
Green fees were £65-100 on this day
I’m visiting north wales in June for my 21st birthday for a long weekend . I’m thinking of playing conwy , nefyn, and royal st David’s . Is the course worth the £120 green fee . Or is there any other great courses that I should consider playing on my trip ?
Hey mate. You can't go wrong with those 3 courses. They are most definitely the 3 best courses I've played in North Wales so far. Is RSDs worth it? It's definitely a unique course with the castle looming over you throughout the round. The reviews are consistently good so I'd say if you enjoy links golf then it is :)
Tough course and conditions
The score could have been much worst than this if I went in the bunkers! :)
Tuff in the wind....
£100 quid!!! No course is worth that
Stunning course and hard as nails
Anything offline and you're playing for bogey at best!
If I don't get the feel of the wind effect by the 3rd hole it is usually a big score 😢😢. 👍🏻👴🏌🏾♂️⛳🇺🇸🦅
