You keep knocking it out of the park. Now that you have tested this cabinet with a traditional magnet and a field coil bass driver, I can only hope the next test will include the 416-8B AlNiCo bass driver from Great Plains Audio or something similar.

Perhaps. Group delay was better than an equivalent bass reflex when I was simulating the design. There’s quite a bit of group delay from a port. But I should look at this closer to confirm. Thanks.

I have wondered whether magnet type really impacts sound quality aside from the thiele-small values, some say yes, others say no. It seems that the one certain benefit of field coils is the ability to adjust the speaker output to better match a specific speaker box, although the speaker could be designed from the ground-up to match the driver. I suspect that 6th order bandpass boxes may provide even better coupling with air than back horns, although sacrificing breadth of frequency response.
I'm very curious how you're crossing them at 300hz in a system with a relatively small mid horn? Can you please explain more about your crossover, and the other drivers/mid/high in this system?
In this application it is more like 600Hz -6dB down point on the LPF. The horn is a 450Hz Fc. If I said 300Hz in the video that was my mistake because normally it is 300Hz on my larger horns. Thanks
What are the subjective, listening qualities of open baffles when compared to back-loaded horns in your humble opinion?
Open baffle is great for being able to hear the bass. It’s a more gentler type of bass that feels directed at you rather than an event that occurs in the room. The BLH sends a shockwave through the room that’s complete and full. Open baffle has a strong leading edge on transients but looses energy almost immediately after the initial impulse, where BLH continues to carry that dynamic slam as a shockwave that reverberates against multiple room boundaries. For example, the BLH tends to shake the structure of the home, activating noises throughout the house such as HVAC ducting. This is just an observation for me, where it seems there’s much more sound power being literally pumped into the room. If you place your hand at the horn mouth you can feel the air moving back and forth a few inches. This is equivalent to a 60cm x 60cm woofer moving that same amount.
Fascinating, thank you for your reply. Does the BLH introduce coloration to bass notes of instruments like piano when compared to open baffle?
Let me chime in.. I have been living with larger BLH for about 20 years, tuned a bit lower than Josephs, with GPA/Altec 515-8LF drivers. Nothing else gives you the visceral connection to the bass like a BLH.. I have have large array of 15" and 16" woofers, as many as 6 per channel, and not perceived the immediacy and energy that just one 16" in the BLH will do. It is an amazing experience. I have found no added coloration compared to open baffled, that sound anemic and empty by comparison after the first edge hit.
What about the purity of low notes of instruments?
@@Sebastian-gc2hc I use thick felt lining in about the last half of the horn length, the big end. This helps remove some of the highs from the bass radiated from the horn, improving the clarity. We don't felt the smaller section end of the waveguide because we want to allow the pressure to velocity conversion that occurs in the small section end to develop. Unlike ported systems, there is very little energy storage and delayed release going on so the perceived sound quality is quite high. .. not boomy, not anemic, just clean and powerful.
Have you tested any of the Acoustic Elegance drivers? I wonder how they compare for IMD to these drivers
I only have the AE Dipole 15 in a previous video. It is about the same as the Beyma for IMD.

Very nice Troy! Is it feasible to design a more compact version of this BLH featuring a 15" woofer with a lower Vas, like the FaitalPRO 15HP1060 for example? The woofers currently used, while excellent, have 'old school' specs that necessitate larger enclosures. Ideally, a BLH that, when paired with an ES290 placed on top, positions the ES290 at ear height (95-100 cm) would be desirable

The Beyma looks VERY similiar to a JBL 2226 woofer. Is there any cooperation between these as a manufacturer/reseller?

You don't care how you get the flux density in the gap - makes NO difference whether it is ceramic, Alnico, neodymium, or expensive electromagnet. BxL is the electrical to mechanical conversion constant; that's what matters. (flux density of gap - length of VC wire in that flux). Linearity of the flux is more important than how it is produced. ie saturated steel has less variation with VC current, inductive shorting rings in the pole peice etc.
Mechanical to acoustic energy conversion is mainly controlled by the stiffness/area of throat for the highpass characteristic. Theil Small parameters and cabinet dimensions.
Shorts horns are more inductive loading at the cuttoff freq. than mass loading from the horn... compromise (still better than reflex or other).

Depends is the answer. I recently tested an inexpensive LaVoce 15" woofer that was very good!
There’s nothing intrinsically expensive about a low distortion woofer. It just needs to be designed and manufactured in a way that maintains a set of parameters. This could easily be lost through poor quality control, or poor design execution for example.
