  • Coverage of the big day on 1st September 2024 when the Triumph clubs came together to drive between the three factories that assembled the Triumph TR7 and TR8 range. Additional video from Speke and Solihull factories is courtesy of Alan Gleaves. Stills used in this video are courtesy of Alan Gleaves, James Hoyle, Alan and Angela Lane.
Peter Sankey, Speke TR7 Assembly Line, met the gathered cars and owners to give a brief talk at Speke and to flag the cars away. Ron Jesson (Speke Detox Controller), Richard Hunt (Triumph Stylist, Canley) and Peter Wilson (Resident Engineer at Speke, Canley and Soliull) joined us to give talks and answer questions at the Canley conclusion to the day. Peter Wilson had one of the original TR7 Sprint cars (SJW 547S) as a management car from new and so make sure you watch to the end to see Peter with three or those 16 valve cars from the same pre-production press fleet that never made it to the press because the model was cancelled.

Absolutely tremendous video John. You and all the organisers of this event should be well and truly congratulated making it happen and also filming it for us to enjoy.
    regards

Thank you Kippy. I actually watched Bullet Reloaded a few days before the big day to revise everything I'd gone through 11 years before in the lead up to the 40th anniversary. The event in September 2014 was the biggest in TR7 history but we knew at the time we couldn't ever realistically repeat it.

Thank you for this video! I bought a new white manual transmission convertible in 1980. I had the car for 4 years, drove it year round here in Canada, winter and summer she never once let me down. I still have the brochure that the sales guy gave me at the time.

Not all the cars were as good as your Kaye but plenty of them were. Over here we didn't get an electronic distributor which meant the contact breaker points gap increased and the performance certainly didn't. John.

Fantastic John, thank you for posting this. Dad is visiting me in Oslo now and watching. Great to see 👍

Thank you. I'm glad you like it. I didn't really have the time to put anything together but I had to get this done now or I never would. If it were going on an old-style Triumph DVD then several days more would have gone into the whole process but that was a different time. I hope ol' dad enjoys it too.

Brilliant job!! I now better appreciate my car. I am a true Triumph enthusiast in Australia. Owned 2 sedans a Mk I and a Mk II. Still own my TR 4 since 1974 and my TR 7 Spider from 2012. I envy all who participated on this event. What great anecdotes!! I have heard many of the stories but now hearing them again from the experts I am amazed how these cars made it on the roads. So happy the crews around the world relish these cars. 😲

It looks to me like you never saw Bullet Reloaded Philip. I interviewed just about everyone still alive who was involved with the car for that three year long production. I don't think any dealers in Australia who carried that one are still in business today though.

Great video. Owned a 1976 four speed from 1976 to 1981. NMD233R carmine red. Faultless. Subsequent SWB107Y, 1982 monza red convertible. Kept until 2003. Again faultless and missed. Should’ve kept it. Won’t be on original plate as I had a private plate and can’t remember the reassigned number when I sold. Chassis suggested 183rd from last ever made, and I possibly have vin record somewhere. Great cars! Now own a tr3 from 58 and a McLaren amongst others. But the 7 will always remain in my mind

Afternoon Michael. You have some wonderful memories there.
The four speed TR7 was a lot lighter than a five speed car. It had taller gearing which made it a bit more difficult to drive but the chuckability and the superior acceleration made it all worthwhile. I'm biased though as I've had mine coming up to 40 years now. If I lost it I don't know how I could ever replace it... but a McLaren wouldn't be a bad choice!

Thanks so much for creating this video and documenting the event. Very important history being documented there from the former Triumph production, engineering and design personnel. Very sad to hear as well in many ways.... Arguably so self defeating, like producing the fleet of TR7 Sprints for press review, and the sale & marketing pulling the plug at the last minute on the basis that they incorrectly perceiving there was no performance difference - why not let the press/public decide?! Pulling the UK TR8 before releasing it - when the factory and tooling was likely setup ready to go.. Moving the factory 3 times in a 7 year production span. Its a miracle anything was built to be honest, so maybe we have to be thankful for that! And for what it is worth I really like the curved swage line - to my taste is 1970s cool.

I've had all these chaps in the TriumphDVD series Adrian but I met Peter Wilson after I made Bullet Reloaded (over three years) so I was only able to include him in a couple of later productions. I never tire of hearing the stories and I think it's the adversity everyone involved had to deal with that makes the cars even more special than they already are.

Not many but I don't know the numbers. What I do know is that if you ever drive an automatic TR7 you will be surprised at how sprightly it feels and how good it actually is.
