    Love the saturated parallel you did on the bass! It's a trick I have been doing live with my bass rigs for years now...such an awesome way to add some edge to a bass without muddying up the low end.

    Remember that human auditory memory is basically nil so in order for A/B-ing to be effective the transition between A and B must be as quick as possible and without interruption. Any kind of pause or talk-over impacts the listener's ability to draw meaningful conclusions.

      they have quite a varied selection of plugins... I'm quite impressed - and there are others that are making plugins that are stunning. I'm not a fan at all of the "membership" model of sales so I don't do slate and wont. If they sold them separately, I'd invest but they are the ones that actually made me start looking at other places and I've found waves is just as good and there are others like eventide, house of kush, Nugen audio and others are are superior. Check them out...

    I am using this plugin without the mic plugin, and to be honest I am having a hard time hearing what it does? I've been mixing for a good number of years now, so my ears are somewhat trained to hearing subtle nuanses but... well this plugin kinda eludes me. That being said, I have WAAAAYS to go when it comes to mixing. What am I supposed to listen for? Fullness? I can hear it fine when the virtual drive is set too high and it overloads, but not much before that.

    • @jhummelgaard9310
      @jhummelgaard9310 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the exact same experience. But the saturation/distortion it creates close to digital clipping seems pretty unique though. But I've noticed that if the audio source is already highly saturated then it is much harder to hear what these type of plugins are doing.

      @JeanmarkRodriguez 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had these slate preamps and didn't hear a difference at all so I deleted them, But now I have a Saffire pro 40 with the Black Lion mod so maybe know that my preamps are very clean and high bandwidth then I might notice a difference.

    • @PeytonHelmProductions
      @PeytonHelmProductions 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeanmark Rodriguez i have the Scarlett and it's hard for me to hear one. If I put it on every single track, and the mix buss, I can hear a little difference, but not much. I might only put it on vocals and the mix buss. But if I record bass and it's a rock mix, I'll throw on the FG-76 and crank it to get an awesome distorted bass sound.

      +Musa Henderson After analyzing different modern A/D converters I think the plan was scrapped. Most are neutral enough for prime time due to technology improvements. At least that's my understanding of the situation.
      My advice, if you're looking for neutral high quality converters at a relatively affordable is to get either Audient's iD14 or iD22 (slightly better due to converter differences and ability to by pass the preamps) interface. That's probably what I'll do if I ever buy VMS.

    • @musahenderson
      @musahenderson 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RealHomeRecording.com at the moment I'm using focusrite converters which I'm happy with, generally, but that original package just seemed more attractive, even he fact it was rackable over a desktop. I'm in the market for a better mic this seemed like a good choice but now I'm leaning to getting a "normal" mic in the £1000 range. Thanks for the reply. Appreciate the thoughts.

  • @callmedeno

    If one didnt care about matching the exact tone of old hardware exactly, can anyone tell me how a high-quality colored preamp hardware is better than plugins like these? I was considering getting a neve portico, but am I getting more than just pure tonality if that makes sense? I have clean preamps at the moment on my interface (audient id14 so they are pretty good if a little lifeless), but if I liven my clean amps with plugins do i need a high quality hardware preamp? (aside from the fact that nobody 'needs' a high quality preamp i know)

    • @callmedeno
      @callmedeno 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im just looking for technical advantages of hardware besides tonality, or if the tonality is much more rich

    • @rt-uh6mt
      @rt-uh6mt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's advantages to each and there's been a lot out there written about this better than I can sum up. But listen to your ears. I've listened to a lot of shootouts and honestly I almost always preferred the analog, even in blind shootouts. Admittedly the difference is small, like the digital is a 9 and analog a 10 but still analog is better enough that I'm hoping to get a BAE 1073 or similar. If you can afford an analog preamp then do it! However I firmly believe you can create a pro sounding track without real analog or even virtual analog and it's not like this will be the deciding factor in my success or failure as a musician. I do in fact have some virtual analog channel strips and I do use them - still I don't buy this hype that these plug-ins will magically transform my music, especially more so than good mixing techniques and proper EQing etc. I recently attended a seminar with a mastering engineer who argued not against plug-ins but just going overboard with them. And even if I mix a song entirely at home and in the box any track worth a damn I will at least have professionally mastered, at that point it will be run through an assortment of analog gear and pick up some of that coveted warmth. There was really a dramatic difference between the mixdown and the professionally mastered song examples so don't overlook how that will play into things.

    • @bpanmusic001
      @bpanmusic001 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got a 73-like preamp in my 500 series and I could say that the fullness and richness of a solid hardware pre is irreplaceable. You can get much smoother saturation especially when you cranked your pre hardly. But FG73 is somewhat very close but lack of a bit of mojo that only hardware can give you. So far I love mixing ITB with Slate Digital stuff and I used my analog gear less and less often

    • @GenreBGoode
      @GenreBGoode 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every analogue piece of gear sounds marginally different due to tolerance variation in manufacturing, whereas plugins are modelled, on the whole, on a single piece of hardware. Therefore, particularly when it goes to attempting to model a console, a single plugin will sound the same over multiple channels, whereas an analogue console will have variances between channels that engineers might identity as being more suited to particular instruments. These occur due to the design of the console and things like voltage variations between channels. This process is modelled by some console emulations on the market but you can't define which channel emulation is being used on a particular track at any given time.
      Another example of this would be the variation in sound between the FG-N and the Scheps 73. They are modelled on different individual units of the same hardware and sound different subsequently.
      As a simpler level, modelling simply hasn't gotten to the stage yet where it can reproduce that analogue "mojo"in a perfect manner. You pay for that mojo, however and spending the money on top end analogue gear versus a preamp modelling plugin should be subject to a cost/benefit analysis, taking into account personal circumstances of both finances and application. In essence, you want your tracks to sound the best they can within your budget, so choose the weapon that works for you and you can afford. You can buy a genuine 1073 preamp, a 1073 clone or use your I/O pre and the FG73 and get similar results. It just depends on what works for you.

    • @GenreBGoode
      @GenreBGoode 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as technical advantages go, a plugin is a lot lighter than a preamp but a plugin will not amplify a microphone signal.

      +SlateTV yeah of course when it comes to colour whatever sounds best works. I just more wondered why you didn't have an example in the chain as it would appear, sounds great still. I guess this also depends on the source in some cases the dynamic response might work better before compression or at least sound very different especially if using a lot of compression (like I sometimes do on vocals or bass). Look forward to trying it out still pumped for virtual microphones.
