    If you hold shift while moving the input knob on slate compressors it automatically matches gain by the way!

    that 800 to 2khz boost tip is so good when you boosted that frequency in the context of the song it literally put the vocal right there in the song

      The time stamp you put had a misleading over-saturated sound which it doesn't have in his final edit.

    Though it's not a topic in this video, but man ... your kick drum sound is always a pleasure. I LOVE that warm, soft and deep sound, which is more felt. Stunning.

    This is an excellent lesson! I found the clip gain section made the biggest difference which is often overlooked because it's so much easier to reach out for a compressor. Quite dramatic how the vocal went from sitting inside the mix to coming forward and on top and yet not sound detached. Great work!

    Great one as always, David. But there's a funny thing going on when I watch your videos. No matter what topic you talk about, everything I think: Man, what an awesome kick! Love that soft hit of the beater, but rich and full low end at the time. Should check out channel for a kick drum mixing tutorial.

    Great lesson but my question is why did you boost 1 kHz using pro q2 but you didn't boost in the VMR ssl eq?

    • @TheMixAcademy
      @TheMixAcademy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! Honestly, I love the keyboard shortcuts with the ProQ2 and I can feel things out better sometimes having that control with my Apple Track Pad. It's a personal preference... The VMR EQ's sound great.

    • @goldmindstudios6887
      @goldmindstudios6887 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pro Q2 is a much more transparent eq and SSL could introduce maybe too much color and harmonics he didnt want to introduce to the signal? Just my guess..

    When I get audio for mixing to video, the film crew will shoot something called room tone (the air conditioner). I then take that into something like Adobe audition and sample that room tone and it will remove it from the recorded track. Why not do that instead of the high pass?

    Great! Pretty different from what I teach people. It proves again that different approaches can deliver good mixes. Don't you think it's better to get some less professional recorded vocal and make it realy good sounding? Your vocal sounds already good in the beginning

    when you increase clip gain is that the same as just automating it louder?

    • @liammontgomery7617
      @liammontgomery7617 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ryan Holms clip gain adjusts the volume into the channel strip but the reason why its good to use is it changes how the overview looks so you can visually so how much you are boosting

    • @CDrumaholic
      @CDrumaholic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clip gain is pre volume fader. Automating is writing the volume fader to move.

    David, do you always mix with your HD 650?

    • @TheMixAcademy
      @TheMixAcademy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tiki's correct! I have monitors, but I'm weird and prefer cans. Haha
      Thanks for watching, Tsuko! Good looking out, Tiki!

    • @AnesBkdm
      @AnesBkdm 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David Glenn Recording Thanks a lot for your answer!
      I'm asking because I myself have a pair of HD 650s which I intended to use for mixing, but I still can't seem to get used to them and their low end. I really want to switch to them over my now very old Tannoy Reveal 6A before getting new monitors.
      Any tips on how I can tame them? (I have Snoarworks too).

    • @TheMixAcademy
      @TheMixAcademy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally my pleasure!
      Hmmm... With Sonarworks and you're having issues... That's a tough one! All I can think to say is to recommend that you listen to a TON of music with Sonarworks on as often as possible. :-/ I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling to adjust to them.

    • @connorabraham7002

      Hey David,
      I'm also mixing on headphones (Focal Spirit Pros)
      What sort of volume do you mix at on your headphones? When I mix on monitors I can go roughly by the equal loudness contour. Mix sounds great!

    • @rafalvarezsevilla
      @rafalvarezsevilla 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      HD650 are the best cans in the world, maybe also the AKG701, a lot of world leading mastering and mixing engineers recommend these

  • @LucasVallimZero
    @LucasVallimZero 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You're reading the compressor knobs wrong, and that's why its sounding so over compressed. On this video, every time you said "I'll put a faster attack" and you moved the knob, you were actually making it slower. The same thing happened when you made the compressor release "slower", you were actually making it faster... See the numbers on the knob. Basically, the lower the number, the faster it is. 1ms is faster then 3ms, and so on...

    • @SabianTamaDrummer
      @SabianTamaDrummer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not with these compressors dude. on 1176 style comps the numbers do not relate to a time value. On these comps the speed is from longest to fastest. So 1 is slowest and 7 is fastest!
