You cover all the general good video practices, like different angles, not too much talking, clear and concise information, and most important...actual helpful and relevant info for us gold bitten fiends out here. So thank you a ton sir, and I'll be watching all your other videos during my next 2 weeks off. But today, I'm going detecting out near Manhattan, NV. Wish me luck!
I really do enjoy your video. Never get tired of hearing your information, and the well thought out description of the dues and the don'ts and especially the whys. Have learned a lot about reading the rocks and water flow hydrodynamics of how the gold travels and stalls out. Never get tired of it! 👍🏻😀🇺🇲🇺🇲
Just found your excellent site and subscribed. I'm starting to get interested in detecting again after a bad start 40 years ago. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to your readers, Thank You.
Great video mate. Best way to mark out an area you want to grid is drag a lump of chain behind you. Mark out lanes as wide as you require then cross then over from perpendicular into squares or rectangular blocks / panels. With detectors a Minelab GPX 4500 pulse induction machine with a 11 inch mono coil or the DD coil will ensure perfect for that ground, for sensitivity and ground coverage a 14 x 9 inch mono coil is the best. Using bigger coils gives you more ground coverage being worked but some of the larger coils will loose sensitivity on smaller bits unless you tune in very well. Detecting low and slow always yields results.
I am so use to using the small coil on the river, I didn't think about bringing the large coil until I was there. I plan on trying both this spring. Thanks - Gary
Two Toes, you're most welcome mate. I'm located in Kalgoorlie western Australia but have travelled every winter and spring time here in Australia to the east coast where I grew up in far north Queensland back country. I take all my coils, DD, MONO, and anti interference coils ( aka salt coil - awesome on salt lakes) large coils for above the creek and river banks, smaller coils for narrow Creek beds and feeder creeks. I find lots of small stuff, GPS the area then rake samples every hole I get a piece of gold. 9 out of 10 times I get fines in the dish with screens of 1\2 inch on top of 1/4 inch on top of 1/8 inch stacked above the gold dish/pan. Also I take my Garret ATX pulse induction detector with me as well along with my Minelab detector. The Garret has far better hot rock rejection capabilities over the Minelab, both are stock standard detectors as I've no inclination to get either of them modified. Love your videos Gary, very informative as to the type of host rock and strata you have to work with over there, and the types of wash as well. Here in Australia it's a whole new ball game as the ground is completely different and we have some of the "hottest" ground for coils to deal with on the planet according to visiting blokes from the USA and Canada. In western Australia we have the most hostile ground for coils - places where you cannot get a coil any closer to the ground than 5 ft off the ground even with the anti interference coils / salt coils.
I have an old iphoneX that can be used with Carl Zeiss lenses are notoriously known for Razer Sharp images. Hasselblad + Leica are very, very expensive cameras who use Zeiss lenses. The 3 Zeiss lenses are Macro/normal, Telephoto and Wide angle. Unlike most other lenses the Zeiss are bright, sharp and distortion free Edge to Edge! The Best part is that you can buy all 3 Zeiss lenses for under $400! You will also need to buy a special adapter than attaches to the iPhone X so that you can then mount your lenses. I only know of one company that makes this adapter

one of your nice and bright videos, the vast open spaces help ~ thanks ~ would be quite helpful if you could describe the most sensitive pinpoint area of the detector plate that you use ~
Nevada is a good State to find Gold, most areas that are proven Gold areas were stringers and veins of Quartz and very fine Gold, (most Gold is microscopic) so detectors may not locate these small amounts of the yellow metal. There are some places that have Flakes and some small nuggets.....
Just curios where are the proven spots to find gold. I’ve been researching for my kids and I to go out but I can really only find places in Utah and California. Any info is appreciated.
yes that's what I always say, its just golden to be out in beautiful places like that ,the gold is just a bonus , good thing to clean up the nuggets is hydroflouric acid , or alli brite they call it aluminium cleaner ,it wont hurt the gold . nice vid , thanks for sharing.

I have a fisher gold bug 2 that i have had about 3 years, I am now getting around to using it more often than i have before. Your video was very educational and has shown me a few things i may have been doing wrong like the grid you made. I'm so use to seeing people look for coins and that's how i have been working my machine, a guy brought that up to me the other day at a goldmine but didn't explain what the right way was to use it. Thanks for another great video.
I used the gold bug 2 for a couple of years, back in 1996. Don't remember a whole lot about running it , but I found gold with it! Thanks and Good luck

What kind of metal dectactor you used ..im trying to go the beach and find some rings or any kind of gold kind you give me any advince what should i purchased. First
2 questions: 1. What is the reason behind doing a back to front sweep than a side to side sweep over the same section? Are you just being extra thorough? 2. How often have you dug an iron target and found gold in the same spot?
By swinging the loop across the target in both directions, allows you to pinpoint much better.2 - A iron target is a much stronget target, it will mask any gold that is near it. I remove all iron targets to make sure their is no gold under them or around them. When working a river I find gold with the iron about 75% of the time.
Great vid Gary! I'm heading out to Pioche for two weeks. I intend to use the techniques you demonstrated. I don't know if there's any gold out there but I'll look. BTW, love the music in your vids
The desert videos are also cool. I have seen others that attemp to show how to look for gold in old stream beds in what today is the desert. Nevada is closer to me than California. It would be nice to visually understand what to look for in Nevada for those of use who don't know others with claims. Though I have enjoyed all the videos you have produced. Even the funny outtakes. Hope you find more gold at you next chosen location.
One more thing ..... You had a Great point ( Cover your holes after you’re done Prospecting) That’s smart thinking. Man You know your stuff. 🤘😎🤘 that’s good info to share with my daughter & friends thanks.
Hi there could you please the next time you find a piece of wire. could you lay down a little nugget and let us hear the comparison sounds. that would be so helpful thank you so much. We are on our way next week to Emigrant gulch Montana. Then down thru Nevada over the Sierra's to the feather river near Paradise for a three week gold prospecting vacation. Thanks again.
That sounds like a great vacation, beautiful country. The bad news is - if you don't want to miss any gold you have to dig the wire! I wish you the best of luck - bring back lots of gold!
Excellent practical instruction. Best we have seen on detecting. Suggestion: the term "pennyweight" is hard to relate to. "Ounce" would better communicate a sense of value as that is what is used in the gold market.
All the old guys that taught me mining used pennyweights so that is what I know. Everyone uses grams now, I think DWT is much easer - there are 20 pennyweights to a ounce. I think that is a lot easer than 31.1035 grams to a ounce.
gary, good video and i picked up some good tips from you and thanks for sharing, i like your videos and i will follow your adventures. take care and stay safe out there. ron
hi ..another nice vid ..thanks ...just curious ...when you are transfering soil from one hand to the other ..you (and others) just throw away what ever is in the hand that doesn't get a a hit sound ...what about the potential for multiple targets..? ..mickey miner
You have a good eye - That is a bad habit I have. You should always check, all the dirt. I always go over the target area when I'm done to make sure there was only one target. Thank you for the support.
you are very knowledgable ,the rust on your one piece should give you a clue, gold is usually found attached to rust, bull quartz, and dolemite, you should look at your own videos, see that outcrop of rust on those young mountains, look down about a 100ft below them,if your TDI masks out the mineralization, happy hunting, lost my mobility or I'd be out there too,big nuggets or outcrop is the top of the thermal vien and they are rare, but the desert southwest in a large place, small grain gold means its traveled a long ways, flood gold as you call it,is the start
Great video, very informative. Like the start and end to your videos. Did some gold panning in NH and VT. Got quite a few flakes. Not much, but gold in both states.
You’ve inspired my sister and I to try this. Thank you for such amazing videos. We’ve learned so much. Any tips for finding the right spot for detecting in Nevada? What areas are off limits?
I only get to go to Nevada, maybe once a year. I am a beginner when it comes to where to go in Nevada. I keep going to the same spot that was shown to me 30+ years ago. Sorry not much help on this one. Thanks - Gary
The gold only moves in flash floods. The flood can last a few minutes or a few hours, but it just tumbles everything down the hill. The gold can end up on the surface or be a foot or two down.
I want to buy the same machine you use. That's why they should sponsor you for endorsement. The natural human tendency to trust what you use is universal. People figure, duplicate the results.
I enjoyed your video. I noticed you looked for gold in a flat area. There were several hills behind you. Is there a particular reason you chose that spot? What signs do you look for out in the desert? By the way I live in south Utah. Have you ever tried here?
This spot was shown to me by an old friend years ago. It is the only place in Nevada I have detected for gold. I have over the years tried the hillsides, but have had no luck. I think in this area all the gold has been washed in. The video doesn't show it but, the hills go on for miles. I have never tried detecting in Utah. I have gone on several bike rides threw southern Utah, beautiful part of the state! Thanks for the support.
Minelab makes great detectors. I am sorry to say, I have not kept up with them. I won't be much help. I feel confident saying if it's a Minelab gold machine - then it will find gold. Thanks - Gary
Im going to be in vegas next week .is it easy to find stuff and where can i go to find gold this way ? I have been detecting in maien for long time got a whites prizim 5
Pin pointers haven't worked very well for me. I have a bad habit of walking off and leaving them. Then I have to take the time to go back and find it. They don't pick up gold very well, and even in the best of situations they only detect a inch or two. Thanks - Gary
I have a compass relic magnum that was handed down to me from my uncle in-law, I have no manual for it and have had great difficulty finding any info on the web. Would it do any good detecting gold crevicing creeks and the like?? In your professional opinion of course 👍 cheers mate
I used to be a Compass dealer back in the 80"s. They were great detectors in there day. I don't think it would be able to handle the high mineralization you encounter while searching for gold. I tried detecting for gold with the old tr/vlf detectors, didn't do worth a darn until the first gold bug came out.
you are funny. you said lets get the iron out of the ground and when you found it. you just threw it back down to the ground away from you. love the videos. that was funny/real world hunting
can you give me an advise where can I prospect for gold nugget with fisher gold bug 2 in Nevada. I live in Las Vegas anything around these areas? or any book that can direct me in these areas?
I don't know any place to go in Nevada, but this one spot. All I can suggest is start reading the history of the area. There has been a lot of mining reports published on Nevada. You can check and see if there are any detecting clubs in your area, they are a good source of info. Thanks - Gary
Another great video I just picked up a Tesoro lobo and can't wait to get out there and find gold.quick question did you build your digging tool or where can I get one ? I dig that digging tool!
I built the tool. I used a old garden rake, I cut the head off a cheep claw hammer and welded the rake to it. You have to find the old spring steel rakes, the ones they make now will brake if you put to much pressure on them. I built that one in the 70's and the rake I used was old then. Good luck and thanks - Gary
I think its spread threw the gravel. When there is a flash flood it stirs things up and gets some of the pieces within range of the detector. The gold that I have found there is small and the detector will only pick it up within 6 or so inches.
I live in Reno, NV. Could anybody possibly give me some knowledge if there are any decent prospecting spots just a couple miles out of Reno ? You don't haft to give up you're favorite spots or anything, I'm basically just trying to confirm if there is any around close by.
Are there ever more than one piece next to each other because when someone waves A Fistful of dirt by the machine. And when the machine beeps they dump their other hand instead of checking it also. I just find that strange
Be respectful of another's property -- don't go where you are obviously not wanted, like a golf course or a cemetery, and don't cross deliberate barriers like fences or go into private yards -- otherwise have at it. When I started, I went to schools on Sundays, parks, trails, and unpaved parking lots where I found lots of clad and learned my machine. I did not excavate with a shovel but just carried a chisel for scratching and never went below 4". Repair any holes. If someone asks you to leave, then leave. Most people are curious about what you can find and are friendly.
I laughed a bit when you got that nail out. You were explaining why you want to get it out, it's trash, it could be masking gold... Then when you dig it and realize it was a nail, you toss it to the side, essentially inviting that nail to be detected the next time you make a trip out there.
I've watched this again , good stuff ..I like it when you talk and share your knowledge. I know you spend hours doing this .. yah it's work ..but what cool places you get to see and experience..
Garry 😊😊 back to Nevada 😊
Personally, I the like the logic you use to deduce your "targets". It's like hearing the Mr. Rogers of gold prospecting which is relaxing.

Good technique, great video. Thanks.
Thank you
are these gold nuggets sitting in drywash areas or just random places?
Most of the pieces were found in the drywash areas. Thanks - Gary
Awesome video,,,, informative and got some nice gold...👍👍😀😀✌
what area is that, i dont mean exactly , just want to have a rough idea on what exit from the 15 north,
The area is off 95, north of Beatty. Thanks - Gary
Ok thanks
Buy the book "placer gold districts of nevada"
Highly informative
Freedom and GOLD can't beat that. And that's a fact.
I have a Minelab Sovereign GT. Do you think it would be capable so of picking up targets like those you are finding?
Minelab makes great detectors. I am sorry to say, I have not kept up with them. I won't be much help. I feel confident saying if it's a Minelab gold machine - then it will find gold. Thanks - Gary
awesome video, I never thought about making a grid. going to try that. im way north where 95 and 80 meet. do you ever get that way?
I only get to go to the desert one or times a year. When I do, I head to the same area. Thanks - Gary
Im going to be in vegas next week .is it easy to find stuff and where can i go to find gold this way ? I have been detecting in maien for long time got a whites prizim 5
How do you find spots out there that aren’t claimed!? I want to go to Nevada to prospect but all the areas I’m interested I are claimed up
Wouldn't a pin pointer work good for sorting out the gold, or don't they detect good for little pea size nuggets?
Two Toes thanks for that mate 👍
Where is that spot located ?
you are funny. you said lets get the iron out of the ground and when you found it. you just threw it back down to the ground away from you. love the videos. that was funny/real world hunting
can you give me an advise where can I prospect for gold nugget with fisher gold bug 2 in Nevada.
Half a penny weight? How many grams??
Are those rust colored hills behind you heavily mineralized ????
Good stuff.... we have learned the same secrets.
Seems the gold there is all on top in the dry streambed, have you always noticed that there?
I think its spread threw the gravel. When there is a flash flood it stirs things up and gets some of the pieces within range of the detector. The gold that I have found there is small and the detector will only pick it up within 6 or so inches.
I live in Reno, NV. Could anybody possibly give me some knowledge if there are any decent prospecting spots just a couple miles out of Reno ? You don't haft to give up you're favorite spots or anything, I'm basically just trying to confirm if there is any around close by.
Looks awesome up there. Do you see any rattlesnakes there?
Every now and then I will come across one.
What are the laws in Nevada for this? How do you know what areas you are allowed to do this?
Are there ever more than one piece next to each other because when someone waves A Fistful of dirt by the machine. And when the machine beeps they dump their other hand instead of checking it also. I just find that strange
I always check everything with the detector before I move on, I think most people do the same.
I'm just wanting to start :) is there any laws I should be worried about not breaking ?
Be respectful of another's property -- don't go where you are obviously not wanted, like a golf course or a cemetery, and don't cross deliberate barriers like fences or go into private yards -- otherwise have at it. When I started, I went to schools on Sundays, parks, trails, and unpaved parking lots where I found lots of clad and learned my machine. I did not excavate with a shovel but just carried a chisel for scratching and never went below 4". Repair any holes. If someone asks you to leave, then leave. Most people are curious about what you can find and are friendly.
A pinpointer would be a lot easier on the hands and quicker to locate the object!
I laughed a bit when you got that nail out. You were explaining why you want to get it out, it's trash, it could be masking gold... Then when you dig it and realize it was a nail, you toss it to the side, essentially inviting that nail to be detected the next time you make a trip out there.
Funny you should bring that up, I ended up finding it again. Put it in my pocket the second time, didn't want to find it a third time. Thanks - Gary
Sweet. I’d go out wittcha anytime!!!!
May the next nugget be a big one...
Thank you very much!
Good Job Guys.
Thanks!
When your detecting in the desert do prefer detecting at a base of a mountain or the flat land ?
I do very little desert detecting, but when I do, I seem to find the better pieces where the alluvial fan starts to spread. Thanks - Gary
great vid man, I enjoyed it.
Thank you very much!
Gotta say, your music selection is way better than Dan Hurd's!
enjoyed the video thanks for sharing
