Let me tell you, there is SO SO much stuff thats totally fine which gets thrown away, it is crazy. And not being allowed to rescue it is just so dumb in my opinion.
In Croatia (I know certainly for some shops, not sure if it's a general rule) they don't allow their employees to take expired or damaged goods because they believe people would take advantage of it and take themselves good stuff, not even intended to be thrown away.
@@lowerself3295 that's rather sad. I think that the employees should be allowed to take the "trash" food for free. They could use it themselves or share with others that could also benefit from it.

Ugh it's so sad to see how much food is wasted... I believe dumpster diving is illegal in Holland but every time you upload a video like this, I'm tempted to check again hahaha. For the meat, couldn’t you call your friend who uses it to feed her animals? The one with the car? (I’m really bad with names) you should look into getting a grabber. One of those long poles with a claw at the end. It could help your trips out a lot more.
Btw, you were talking about the expiration date and I think that term is one of the reasons that people have a mindset of something beyond that date being bad in general. Both of theses Terms suggest that you can still eat it after that date, it might just not be as great tasting as it was before.
You're right. I think a lot of people confuse the terms "best before" and "expiry date". Food is very much edible after the "best before" date, just may not be as yummy. I know here in Canada, I see people throwing out so many things because they think "best before" means it's expired. So much waste, I just cringe when I see people doing that.

About the dates on food, in the UK we have two and knowing the difference helps save a lot of food waste at home. We have 'use by' which is generally meat or dairy or other perishables, which if eaten after the date can cause you harm. And we have 'Best before' which is more of a guideline like 'this food tastes at it's best, before this date' but is still good beyond (and in some cases can be years beyond, pure honey I'm looking at you). In terms of 'best before' it can also indicate how potent/useful an ingredient may be, what springs to mind is something like yeast, baking powder or bicarbonate of soda which may be less effective, although still consumable after the date on the packet.
The little plant is capsicum /bell pepper! If you take care of it, it can become a huge plant and you won't need to buy peppers in a long time once it starts producing 😊 (ours produce all year around since the climate in Ibiza is really mild during winter)
It is such a shame that so much ends up in supermarket bins ... You guys are doing a good thing. Here in Germany we have some shops that take produce off farms before they get thrown out (they weren't even meant to reach the supermarket shelves), so that saves us from having to dumpster-dive, but some people do it regardless, which I approve of.
I always find your videos SO inspiring! And I must say, this topic is something I am thinking A LOT about. In Poland it is not so easy as most dumpsters are closed. I am also still a bit reluctant to try it (also from the technical point of view) but I know that in my city as well as country, there are people who strongly believe freeganizm is the only way to go, and they actually do save a lot of food which is great. Not doing it myself really makes me appreciate their effort and the risk they take!
I loved this video! It’s insane how much food is wasted. Please make more like this! I like to use veggie pulp from juicing in soups. You could blend the carrots, turmeric, celery, and apple into a curried carrot soup with veggie stock, spices, and onions or leeks. So good!
In the US, if the food in the stores has an expiration date of today or earlier they have to throw it away. Many grocery stores just donate the food instead of throwing it away. I have a friend that gets the food from the stores and gives it to a charity and if there is enough left over we take some. Nothing is really wrong with the food and it tastes good.
Hi, the plant look some kind of pepper 🌶️, not sure. Só many food on the garbage 😒, they can give to people o need. The expiration date of some product are only for safe of the company, I usually eat yogurt or eggs after the date if they are the fridge till a week after 😉 Love from Portugal
Since I started dumpster diving I am also making juice, because its a good way to use a lot of fruit and veg. I also know that the pulp is a great thing but I am not as experienced in how to use it. So I wanted to ask if you could make a video showing some recipes with different juice pulps :) I love that you use your space on the internet to make the world a better place! lots of good energy from austria
You can make muffins and make them less dry by adding shredded carrot or zuchini, maybe with a little less of the milk/water the original recipe wants, and pulp should be the same. Google carrot muffin or something.
You should try an APP that's call TOO GOOD TO GO. In it local shops, local grocerys etc put in a cheaper price food and products that they are gonna throw it away and its in a good state. I use it in Spain, but when i visited my aunt in Sweden were so many more options and offers and i suposse that in Denmark its the same. I hope this helps. I love your videos and thanks for showing us that we can make it better in our own way. Xxxx
Anyone else live in Copenhagen? I live close to all the mail supermarkets (Irma, Lidl, Fakta, Rema, etc...) but I've never noticed any accessible dumps outside. Have you? I'm interested in your opinions. Thanks guys!
I believed you when I saw your other dumpster haul. I was a homeless teen for a bit, and used to dumpster dive to feed myself. I remember the first time I did it, I was shocked at how much food was thrown in the trash.
Love this. People have been telling me to dumpster dive forever, i have a young daughter so ill probably send my husband, im hoping our dumpsters arent locked
as long as it isn't moldy and smells fine you can eat it. I've volunteered at food pantry's and they have lists of things and how far past the "expiration" date they are still good for. I'm sure these exist online as well. :)
Yep... bell pepper(I see other people already commented😊). I think I’d be scared to personally dumpster dive, -never say never, but I think it’s fabulous & love when you video on it. So many great finds!
I would love a video about how to use food scraps in cooking before composting. I noticed it with pulps from juicing but it would be so cool to get better ideas for like onion scraps, because right now they're just going in the com poster for me. Thank you for this video! Dumpster diving is legal in my area but the main store Walmart doesn't allow it! DANG IT. But I haven't tried some of the other grocery stores.
It's legal here in the US, unless there's a local ordinance against it. However, how would I check to see if there is one? Also, any tips for starting this up when your family would most likely look down on it and in no way be supportive of it? Especially loose fruit and veg?
I'm not sure if this is something that already exists or not, but I think it would be amazing if you started an online local group for dumpster divers. You could all share locations and what they have, so that others can find the meat and other items you don't have use for. Just a thought! Love the video! It's very admirable, what you're doing to save the food ❤
I like to go dumpster diving as well and usually an hour after the supermarket closes, sometimes I can fill up an IKEA bag. Bit stupid with not so frequent bus times at the moment during corona and until those are better and I can go to the bins again, I've been buying only the reduced veggies and fruits which would go to the bin of no one else is buying them. I got almost 4kg of yellow/still greenish bananas for less than £1. Jackpot. Around which time do you go out?
Hi Gittemary, I can highly recommend the app PlantNet to name any olant you dont know, it tells you the name by picture and is really great. I use it in german so I dont really know if the texts can be shown in english/danish as well, but with the name you can google it :)
Yentz saying the phrase " I can't get anyone to take this meat off my hands" reminded time of high school was hilarious. I'm sure some people got offended but I sure didn't. My husband and I are always saying dirty jokes like that 😂😂
I believe the plants are : small one- chilly or some kind of pepper (It needs a lot of sunlight to grow and also bees when it will have flowers), the bigger one without flowers looks like thyme but i could be wrong.
I always wondered what grocery stores did with the expired items and if they did dispose of them, were they still salvageable/edible once tossed in the dumpster. This video is definitely helpful & informative. Not only on the items retrieved but also on secondary ways to continue using them, or repurposing some of the byproducts if possible. Thank you, now I just have to work up the courage to get into a dumpster lol.
A very interesting video; it makes one wanna go out and dumpster dive ..but damn, I can't imagine myself doing it because of the fear and kinda shame feeling, idk. Could you maybe make a video on how to start and how to behave right and stuff? loveya videos, keep on filming
I know food waste is a huge problem, but I’m surprised about meat getting thrown away, at least lately. Here in the States (I’m in Ohio) our grocery stores have been having such trouble keeping meat stocked that they’re limiting the amount of meat customers can purchase in one trip. In fact, people have been panic buying so much meat that chest freezers are being sold out everywhere. This pandemic is leading to so much overconsumption. :(
Am I safe to assume that most of the food you saved doesn't get at least half of it donated to food pantries or food banks to get food to those in need? The majority of grocery stores where I live in Maine for my area, plus restaurants donate to food pantries, soup kitchens and food banks, then to local farmers for their livestock if it isn't good enough for human consumption, and lastly the stores partake is composting programs. A few chains here have greatly reduced their waste and are moving towards making more great goals and steps to even less waste and being more environmentally friendly in general.
Great video Gittemary... keep ‘em coming. Love your enthusiasm and also Jens charm as well. Great presentation on the food in your photos... I’ll bet it tasted 10x as good as it all looked.
I love watching your dumpster diving videos! (And all the others) I just looked and in my state it is legal to dumpster dive but it warned of city ordinances. I’m wondering if you have more luck with larger commercial size stores or less common ones? Thanks so much for sharing. You among a few other youtubers are a great inspiration to me as a small channel working towards spreading the word about sustainability and veganism. 💚🌎🌱
Plants & Progress A lot of commercial stores usually have a trash compactor. My husband and I get the most from our Dollar General Market and Ruler Foods. They use actual dumpsters while our Walmart uses a compactor.
I wonder if supermarkets throw out more or less following the pandemic. I'm thinking they may throw out returns more easily now since they would have been handled by a lot of hands by the time they are returned. Could also be less if they stock up less of foods that don't sell as quickly now that people don't grocery shop that often (limiting the number of times going to the supermarket). That might be a nice follow up topic perhaps?
Love this! These dumpster diving videos are my favorite!! It's insane how many useful products get thrown away! Definitely need to research if I can dumpster dive here in Brussels, Belgium! 🙏
Here in Spain it's forbiden to do that...the supermarkets don't dump the food...late at night there are companies who pick up all the dump...😣😣...and destroy it
My brother used to dumpster dive our libraries dumpster and he'd come home with so many books
My mind is blown away how could you just throw a book... ;(
Oooh, I need to see if I can do that at my local library!
As a librarian it's part of our job to throw away books and update the collection. I don't think anyone really likes it but unless someone wants the book they unfortunately will end up in the trash.
@@user-bb8lj4wh2j can't they just be donated to secondhand stores or charities or schools, or recycled (take the bindings apart)?

i absolutely love this! im in uni and will definitely be taking my friends dumpster diving in the near future, once i figure out if it's legal here! 😊
Hi Gittemary, I can highly recommend the app PlantNet to name any olant you dont know, it tells you the name by picture and is really great. I use it in german so I dont really know if the texts can be shown in english/danish as well, but with the name you can google it :)
The unknown green is a sapling for yellow/green pointed peppers :-)
Jeg elsker de her videoer! Det er vildt inspirerende at se hvordan du får brugt tingene!
16:03 This looks like a Pepper plant - you can easily grow it in a pot, maybe a slightly bigger than the one it came in
Capsicum is another word for pepper. You probably have a pepper plant. You will have to wait and see if they are spicy or bell
Yentz saying the phrase " I can't get anyone to take this meat off my hands" reminded time of high school was hilarious. I'm sure some people got offended but I sure didn't. My husband and I are always saying dirty jokes like that 😂😂
the plant which you dont know what it is is a bellpepper! spitzpaprika is translated to "pointed pepper" and it's a green-yellow kind!
I believe the plants are : small one- chilly or some kind of pepper (It needs a lot of sunlight to grow and also bees when it will have flowers), the bigger one without flowers looks like thyme but i could be wrong.
Well done!🌹
I always wondered what grocery stores did with the expired items and if they did dispose of them, were they still salvageable/edible once tossed in the dumpster. This video is definitely helpful & informative. Not only on the items retrieved but also on secondary ways to continue using them, or repurposing some of the byproducts if possible. Thank you, now I just have to work up the courage to get into a dumpster lol.
I think the small green plant is basil!
Your bike is so cute!
Finally, sending you all the best wishes for the new month!
Stay safe and sound and make the most of the upcoming warm days!
Love your dumpster diving videos and knowing what you do with the food
I love this dumpster diving videos!!
Lol it says capsicum on the pot. I was guessing chillie but it must be capsicum. So glad you rescued plants! :)
The Capsicum plant you dumpster dived- it's a bell pepper plant (the sweet ones that are either green, red, or yellow). I love your channel!!!
Loved this video! Well done for all the food you rescued and enjoyed ❤️
It’s a pepper or paprika (capsicum)
Where i live, the fruits and veggies are expensive. Your smoothies are mouth watering!
Super great video. Interesting and inspiring thank you!
this is lowkey bad ass
Capsicum is the latin name for hot peppers / chilli peppers 😊
The mystery plant that you showed at the end has a label that says “capsicum”, which I’m pretty sure is a bell pepper!
Amazing video! Can you show more recipes for veggie stocks?
I wonder if supermarkets throw out more or less following the pandemic. I'm thinking they may throw out returns more easily now since they would have been handled by a lot of hands by the time they are returned. Could also be less if they stock up less of foods that don't sell as quickly now that people don't grocery shop that often (limiting the number of times going to the supermarket). That might be a nice follow up topic perhaps?
Capsicum are peppers!! Don’t know if red peppers or Green ones, probably red, Gittemary😘😘!
I really love your dumpster diving videos! Sadly it is actually illegal where I am from so I have to live a little through your videos 😄
You make vegan croutons for salad out of the white bread!
Love this! These dumpster diving videos are my favorite!! It's insane how many useful products get thrown away! Definitely need to research if I can dumpster dive here in Brussels, Belgium! 🙏
16:00 is a pepper plant. Did it have some yield in the end?
Here in Spain it's forbiden to do that...the supermarkets don't dump the food...late at night there are companies who pick up all the dump...😣😣...and destroy it
YAAS I'm early! Great video tho :') Keep it up girl!
I think what you do it's amazing♡
