It absolutely should be illegal anywhere to trash organic waste instead of contributing to either food banks or [industrial] composting. I'm thankful for every dumpster diver and/or person who supports composting. THANK YOU whoever is reading and part of this! Edit: Also all these "wooden" crates...
Wish I had the courage to do this haha people are so judgy when it comes to dumpster diving. So many negative connotations still associated with it, love videos like this that normalise it a bit more 🥰
Please make us LOTS more dumpster diving vids, Gittemary. This one was fab! 💞 But also, for someone living in South Africa, quite stressful I must admit. I found it SO distressing to see the scale of food and plants wasted. Which I know is only a fraction of what occurs elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in North America. 😱💔
I work at a major retail store here in the U.S and I’m proud to say that they donate a lot of their culled fruits and vegetables and also damaged packaged food that’s still edible , like boxes of pasta that are dented for example. Also other stuff in general that’s either out of season or packages that are dented. They do good with not throwing things away but having the food bank or donating to other nonprofits that could use these things.
I love dumpster diving! I live in a very rich city and people throw away carpets, beautiful furniture and tons of other home goods all. the. time. I’ve diverted hundreds of pounds of textiles from the landfill.. their loss is my gain!
When I worked at a grocery/health supplements store, the prices were high, so of course the “shrink” was high. It was more than our staff could eat 😅 So we were able to connect with a local food bank to pick up the rest. Took a lot of arguing with corporate to allow us to do that 🤦🏻♀️
We have a great charity in my town, that i volunteer with. It's called a community fridge. We go to all the supermarkets in the town every couple of days, and they give us the food that would ordinarily be wasted and incinerated for bio-fuel. We have a unit with some donated fridges and freezers in it. Three days a week, we set up a few tables outside of the unit, with all the food laid out. Anyone can bring a bag and fill it up with whatever they want, for free! It's basically a cleaner, more sanitary and fairer alternative to dumpster diving. Obviously the elderly, and those with mobility problems are unlikely to be able to climb into dumpsters, and many people don't feel safe or comfortable doing it. We make it easier for everyone, by doing the messy part, leaving everyone else to just come and collect what they need :)
Sadly, I don't know any supermarket in my local area that has their waste bins in the car park. They all seem to be locked away. I'd happily go dumpster diving if I could. I'm definitely interested in more videos about this.
I have never dumpster dived for food, but I share the trash and recycling room with lots and lots of other students and have found a lot of really nice stuff, just by taking a look when I trash or recycle something myself. I have found so much ceramics, pots and pans, and clothes! I can even sell them on and get a small sum for it, which is super nice as a student.
For people wanting to do this in the UK, I really recommend doing your research. There's a huge amount of grey area when it comes to the legality surrounding it. Even if a bin is outside, it doesn't necessarily mean it is on public property and you can still get done for trespassing. Plus different laws apply to domestic trash like people's bins or a hired skip.
If your wanting to have a garden you can plant things like ginger, turmeric, sprouted garlic and onions! That would be a great use of some of that produce. Now I want to go dumpster diving 😬
In Germany it's actually illegal to go dumpster diving. A good (and legal) alternative ist beeing a foodsaver through foodsharing for anyone who might be interested. The partner stores give us their throwouts on a voluntary basis and we take everything with us that is still edible and share it with a bunch of people! 😊
Wow, that is amazing! I definitely would love to see more dumpster diving. I am new to your channel and have been binge watching 😃it is actually because of you, I put my shame on a shelf and convinced my hubby to start coming to a high end grocery store dumpster. OMG! In the last two weeks since started, we've gone 4 times and already found over $500 of food! And it is a small store and we have taken maybe just 1/10 of what is in the dumpster🤯 like you say, we are grateful to have it, but it is INSANE how much is thrown out 🤯🤯🤯 I am rebranding my bin visits as Food rescues 🙌 has a better vibe 💃 Thank you so much for your inspiration and work on sustainability. I am your new fan from Canada 🇨🇦 😍
That is great that you can salvage all that food!! Sad that it is thrown away. These stores should have a program where they donate to shelters, low income, seniors etc. Just before they expire and need to be tossed!
Thanks for making a video about this and drawing attention to the massive amounts of waste that stores produce! Dumpster diving can be such a great way to counter that waste (and get lots of delicious and free food) and it's important to talk about it more openly 😊 Here in Sweden the rules are similar to Denmark so I go dumpster diving a lot and I sadly also see a lot of avocados being wasted!

It is crazy that in this time where all prices are rising it is legal to throw out food in perfect condition...
Thank you for this video, Gittemary. I have a lot of food-related anxiety and seeing you do this (eat food from a dumpster and be fine) has actually helped bring me some relief from it this week.
“My heart cannot bear it.” oh how I feel ya on this one Gittemary!!!!!!!! Your video shows us one of the biggest and most wasteful flaws in western society... it is heartbreaking!! I’m really looking forward to your summer BBQ video. I find there is not much content for plant-based summer BBQ meals/recipes. When you were talking about feeling dirty/gross this reminded me of the saying “Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.” (and in this case, with gloves.). I did not know that you can freeze avocados… if you have a minute can you tell us how you prep them for freezing, and also how you use them once they are thawed?? YEASS… more dumpster diving videos please and thank-you. Have a lovely time at the cottage. 🌎💦Ⓜary💕
You can remove the skin and pit from the avocados and freeze them as slices like banana. They work well in smoothies to make a nice thick creamy consistency and I don't find that the flavor is too strong.
@@ciaracipponeri6921 Thanks for the helpful 🥑 tip. Now I know how to freeze avocado slices and I know I will just love using them in smoothies. Much appreciated. Ⓜ️ary🇨🇦
Yes! So good to see the dumpsterdiving videos are back! Can’t wait for the next one. Maybe comming up with recipes for all the found food? That would be nice to see in a video 💪💃
YES!!!! I just went dumpster diving or the first time a few weeks ago. It was so much fun! We were a bit anxious because we had never done it before, but we found some good stuff. No food, unfortunately, because we live in a decent sized city and most of the places that would have had food had dumpsters that were attached to the buildings with no way to get into them, or they were locked up :( We definitely plan on going again, though! I found some great shelves for our new zero-waste store we're starting, which was super exciting! Please do more videos like this!!
Hi 👋 Awesome 👏 finds !!! Banana’s awesome 👏 finds !!! Fill up your freezer with free goods !! I miss getting free onions!!!🧅 I use to never have to buy onions 🧅 and I have had to buy onions 🧅 and I use to get them for free. WOW 🤩 !! That is AMAZING 🤩!!! That’s nice 😊 of people to put it out for others. That’s exciting!!! They don’t act like that in the United States 🇺🇸. Avocados 🥑 are so good 😊. I love 💗 making avocados 🥑 for salsa !! Yummy 😋
10:05 these are delicious, rich in vitamin C and easy to grow too! Definitely keep one to harvest the seeds and try growing your own! I had never considered dumpster diving before seeing you and Shelbizlee, it is interesting but I am afraid I would be really grossed out…
Those golden berries are also called ground cherries here. I grew my plant from seed and it is related to a tomatillo. It's a perennial now in my garden. I am freezing mine for smoothies and jams (CA, USA).
I just saw a post on FB that mentions how to freeze avocados.. they mash them up, use a small cookie scoop and freeze in balls on a tray. then in a few hrs when they are firm they throw them into a gallon ziploc bag (id use a stasher myself)
I definitely want to start dumpster diving in my area! Not sure if its actually legal in the US. With avocados that are going bad, this actually promotes the seed to germinate. Then you can plant the see and have a new plant😁 (mine is currently growing in my apartment)
Loove this concept❤ It was actually one of your older dumpster diving videos that encouraged me to try it myself and i couldn't be happier about it. I also spread the word and got a buch of my friends to join the dumpster diving forces😏 You inspire thousands of people, Gittemary, just think about all the food we can save (and already have saved) together. I'd love to see more videos like this, cause they are actually pretty impactful and so inspirational! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you're doing❤
The idea of the trolley filled with soon-to-be-expired foods is amazing. Where I live, one certain supermarket sells boxes full of ugly looking veggies and fruits that would otherwise be thrown away for £1!
Ciao io qui in Italia raccolgo oggetti d epoca antichi e oggetti da collezione: libri bottiglie, collezioni etc. Molto belli i tuoi video, saluti dall' Italia.
In my city (UK) most dumpsters are locked. :( But a good number of stores participate on Olio were "food heroes" can collect stuff and then it gets listed on the app and people redistribute it from their homes
Thank you for this! I think more people need to see the amount of food wasted each day. It’s so tragic to see this when there are so many families experiencing food insecurity. A friend of mine told me that stores are not allowed to give out food as it is a liability (this is probably US- specific). While it was all heart wrenching, there were a few screen shots where I saw meat thrown out. The poor animals that are bred purely for food are thrown in the garbage. Horrifying. Thank you for showing this and for playing a part in reducing food waste! If only the powers that he could get their act together to create better systems for reducing this!

Another fantastic video from beautiful Gittemary. It should be illegal to waste all that food. Great that Gittemary is getting into gardening which I would encourage (I am bias when it comes to gardening because I am a gardener so it comes with the job to encourage others to do it). Love 🥰 the video and love 💞 Gittemary.
Hey, I just want to ask you something. Do the supermarkets in Denmark offer discounts for expiring food such as bread and dairy products? Some German chains in Bulgaria like Kaufland and Lidl actually do that and sometimes I am able to grab something fancy at a reasonable price. I have noticed that in my country people usually throw away old furniture from the Soviet era which is such a waste but they usually don't throw away food unless its gone really really bad. Thank you for the video! It's really nice.
Even inedible avocados are good for the stone n fertiliser. You can keep the stone and dry it out, or remove the stones skin and roast it without charring it, then pulverise into powder. This powder is a great natural vegan protein powder with anti Alzheimer properties so always take any avocado and save the stone :-)
I have been thinking alot about one thing. I live in Iceland and here companies and even people themselves are "evening out their carbon footprint", you basicly pay a company money for filling up a ditch somewhere in iceland to make grassland into swamps. Is this actually doing anything for the CO2 we are releasing ? 🤔 It is advertised as if you go to fly to another country for example you can "fix" your carbon footprint by doing this.

yes, people miss the point. its not through desperation, but simply to reduce food waste! its wastage that should be classed as abnormal or antisocial.
I think you just have to do it over and over again until you don't care about what other people think. Having company at the beginning also helps
I'd do it but in Germany it's against the law :c it's considered stealing even tho it's in the garbage
@@Riaguk same in the USA. it's "trespassing"
@@Riaguk Hi, vielleicht gibt es ja Foodsharing auch in deiner Nähe. Dann kannst du ganz legal Lebensmittel vor der Tonne retten :)

This powder is a great natural vegan protein powder with anti Alzheimer properties so always take any avocado and save the stone :-)
AVOCADO HEAVEN. I like the "it it's free it's vegan" thought, too bad I can't eat milk even if i wasn't vegan 😔
I love your dumpster diving videos! I'm hoping they'll inspire me with the courage to do it myself one day 😅
Even all the stuff you brought home and composted is still saved and helping the earth!
Your hydrangea plants from Monday are in great shape!! Love the fig too!
Yes! Thanks for taking us along 💃🏻
It is advertised as if you go to fly to another country for example you can "fix" your carbon footprint by doing this.
My Mom does dumpster diving frequently and she takes the plant pots with her and uses the soil.
I love those hortensia/hydrangea plants, you can change the color of the flowers by changing the pH level of the soil
Bisexual gargoyle got me. 😂😂
Wow, that's a great haul. So much waste out there!

You should try to sprout some of the turmeric and keep them as house plants!!!
I'm absolutely looking forward to more videos like this one!!
I'm so inspired now! Too bad it's going into hot summer now. Will definitely get back into it during autumn, with the food prices as a student.
Would really enjoy more videos like this. So sad to see how much supermarket waste there is!
