There is some red tape to it because they don't want to get sued if someone gets sick from it BUT a few years ago, Publix, at least in my town in florida has started donating unsold bakery items to our pantries and shelters! I read target and winn dixie is too. But I think it's hit or miss because I have certainly scored ''minutes ago'' thrown out ice cream, sushi, fruit, frozen meals, etc in winn dixie dumpster a few years ago later. One of our local pantries also feeds too soft produce to pigs!
The local stores in my area (like Tesco, Sainsburys etc) donate left over food to a food bank. They were convinced to do this by our environmental student council!
Our local shelters and food kitchens wouldn't take anything that was damaged or not fresh if from the bakery. So none of our stores dominate anymore as they were turned away.
Hey gittemary, totally understand your perspective.. even before I was vegetarian and now vegan it bothered me so much when people throw away meat 😟that was someone’s life that was raised to feed humans and then killed and thrown away 😢
Ive started pretty much only buying meat thats "clearanced" now (the stuff the store is getting ready to toss) for that reason. I think eating meat is fine, but killing and not even eating/using an animal is just senseless. And there are absolutely unethical ways to treat animals too! I have friends with pet chickens I prefer to get eggs from, and a friend who has a beef farm - she loves all of her animals and cries every time one goes go slaughter, but unfortunately part of ranching is having to get rid of "bad" or overused bloodlines so it doesn't negatively affect the herd. She's trying to breed them more towards being dairy cows rather than meat cows, and donates meat they cant personally use to food pantries for low-income families so they have good quality food. So not vegan or vegetarian, but VERY enthusiastic about trying to limit loss-of-life for murder's sake.
My friend works at a donut shop and everyday they throw out hundreds of good pastry made on the same day. She asked to bring them home but the boss demanded her to buy and won't ever give them for free. Does it even logic? Would anyone come to check the garbage and compliment on the extra food they wasted? I'm so mad at how we treat our resources like this.
Wish someone would make Dumpster Diving food boxes. you pay a small amount for the gatherer's time and gas useage and they go, get dumpster diving foods and make goodie boxes, for others who can't go out to dumpster dive themselves. For myself all the stores that are near me padlock their dumpsters and have no trespassing signs on them. So bummed since I see a bakery throwing tons of bread away because its "outdated" BS.
Same here with the padlocks and no trespassing signs. Also I live in a sketchy area and feel unsafe rummaging in dumpsters especially at night when the stores are closed, but I have no problem with the food waste itself and would love to support.
I knew someone that would go into a bread store and buy the old bread off of them for cheap. If you ask them for it, you might be able to buy it cheap off the bakery too?
If the grocery stores weren’t so greedy, they would sell all this food at a significant discount. But they don’t because that would take away sales from their regular priced produce/food. It’s completely unethical to throw out all that food without trying to sell it at a very low price.
At least in Finland they put -30 % stickers on products that have the best before date on that day, the next day or sometimes even two days after. And in most stores all those discounted items can be bought for a double discount of -60 % during the final hours the store is open. This is of course not eliminating all food waste and I think dumpster diving in Finland is illegal, but it is definitely a good thing and I see a lot of people (including me) going to the store specifically to buy these product late in the evening.
Could you do a video on some of the grey areas of veganism?Like honey and other insect products, second hand animal products, family raised chickens used as pets and eggs for a small community, or pet cows that are also used for milk?
That dumpster haul (with the nuts) was ridiculous! 😩 So much unnecessary waste smh For the bananas! Yes to the Nice-cream or banana bread! Soooo good! 😋
I've wanted to get into diving but it is very frowned upon in America and some towns even have laws against it. I've seen hauls like this and it blows my mind that people just throw that stuff away! ✌❤🌎
In our area, a lot of it goes directly to the poor and homeless. My husband used to pick up stuff from the store and bring it to a local food pantry. You could try talking to stores in your area and see what could be done.
I know I'm late to this comment, but yeah, they lock the dumpsters where I am in California so nobody can get into them. Dumpster diving is considered unlawful and you can be fined.

You should follow Foodsharing Copenhagen because they share all food waste from supermarkets with hundreds of people, such a nice movement, and maybe even inspiration to implement in your own city
You can freeze nuts! they hold up really well in the freezer (but do not thaw then refreeze i just keep them in the freezer and take out however much i need at a time)

The retail I work at donates everything we can to soup kitchens, the only thing we actually throw away is molded items (also a lil note I'd be careful when you find things like the nuts in bulk thrown away they could've been on a recall)
I live in the U.S. midwest. We have a local food bank that goes around to the big box stores and takes donations, but there is still food thrown into dumpsters. The really sad thing is that some of the stores pour bleach all over the tossed produce to discourage dumpster diving. The divers were making big messes and at one point that food bank got sued by someone that got something that was expired so they now are really careful about what they receive. Really messed up.
Sadly most grocery stores and convenient store in the u.s. have their dumpsters locked ,so your no longer allowed to do this. I remember dumpster diving every day finding shampoo, candles, food and most was not to be expired for a maximum of 5 years.
I love watching you, you have so many great ideas, I don’t know if this was your first dumpster diving video, but please make more, I have just gone one month without having to purchase any food at the store and am completely hooked, keep up the good work!
When you said you'd have a piece of carrot cake with your smoothie, for a split second I tought you were going to blend it ;) So nice to see you eating such meals basically from the dumbster!
Dear Gittemary, did you ask the grocery shops whether they would like to give the food to people in need? Here in Germany we have several organisations for this purpose. But only a few grocery stores really cooperate with this organisations and thats why dumpster diving is popular too.
It's just chocking the amount of food you found in the dumpster... I really wanted to try to dumpster diving, but I haven't done it yet. Anyway I just wanted to thank you for passing this message!

Totally not on board with the 'freegan' meat/dairy concept for myself, but understand to an extent why some people are as the items have already been created and the suffering has been done - its better than it being completely wasted. I guess an individual's stance on that is the motivation behind why they follow a (predominantly) vegan diet. What a total bittersweet win for those nuts and bananas though, that is my kinda heaven!
I completely feel you, I could never, simply because I don't think I'll ever be capable of eating another sentient individual ever again, but if you plantbased for environmental reason then if ofc makes more sense. It's one of those situations where I am kind of happy that people are different 🌿😅
The amount of nuts that got thrown away made me angry. Especially because nuts can be stored for a few years and still be okay to eat. And they're so expensive! The store should put up a give away box for things like that. Thank you for rescuing them. Hope they were delicious :)
Such great content as always! There are so many people going hungry in the world that could benefit from perfectly good discarded food. It could help world hunger and the planet. Freegans?😂😆 Love your sense of humour 💚
I feel like supermarkets should collect the stuff they’re planning on throwing out and make it available to students and people on low incomes for a low price so that way they still get some money plus they’re helping people with little money survive.
That lovely carrot cake is so up my alley. Please share the recipe of it. I would love to make it in this quarantine period.🙏 Those bananas are perfect for banana bread as well 😍 PS: binge-watching your videos.
I live in Spain and I dumpster dive most of my food. I'm vegan but I eat freegan as well, just eggs and cheese because I can't get myself to eat meat or any other dairy products as they upset my stomach.
Why do people throw away perfectly good food? Also, I think with meat and dairy it might also be trickier, because if meat goes off it's off and there's definitely a higher chance of food poisoning. With fruit and veg it's very obvious when they are off and they will often get thrown away even if they are still edible. I don't know when meat and dairy are thrown away, but there's a higher chance of it being off, I would imagine.
If there’s a small bit of mold in a bag or on a fruit/veggie, how do you decide whether to take it or not? If it’s a bag of veggies (like those carrots) would you clean the mold and save the rest of the veggies at home?
Just came across your channel and I love it! Dumpster diving is 100% illegal in Germany and I'm not brave enough to try anyways. Denmark just does most things better than Germany :-)
I got inspired by your video (as well as by movie about Food Waste) and i really want to try Dumpster digging. Still feel weird about it but it worth trying i think. Did you continue any more dumpster diving week after this experiment?
i hit the subscribe button right when you said there’s no such thing as juice cleanses. tooooo many people think they can “cleanse the toxins out of their system”
I eat a vegan/plant based diet but if I found some cheese or bread that contained egg or something while dumpster diving I would not mind eating it. Meat is another story I would not be able to eat meat anymore, the thought about eating a corpse is just too sickening for me and I would not like the texture I am sure. I do live in a dorm with a shared kitchen and if I ever find something that I will not eat myself I just bring it to the kitchen for other people to eat :) I would love to do more dumpster diving - and please do more vlogs where you go out and do it.
grocery stores throwing food away should be illegal, that food should be set aside and given to shelters.
as it is right know they are not allowed to donate anything they can not get sold.

Loved the juice rant. 'You have a liver.' Yesss!
Yes. Unless the vegetarian or vegan diet gives you a fatty liver, as it happened to me.
@@ceciliaonanu3631 That makes no sense. Literally nothing that causes a fatty liver is related to veganism.

You could bake the walnuts in bread :)
That amount of food waste is nuts!! (Literally)
If there’s a small bit of mold in a bag or on a fruit/veggie, how do you decide whether to take it or not? If it’s a bag of veggies (like those carrots) would you clean the mold and save the rest of the veggies at home?
I store nuts in the freezer. I have kept pecans up to a year that way.
If you have wrinkly or bruised apples that are still kind of juicy you can use them to make apple pie filling with a little sugar and cinnamon !
great video, thank you!!!
"Absolutely mental." Then lobby the government about how stores handle expired food. You cannot blame the store for following the law. Blame the law.
I would make so much cashew Alfredo!
Can I ask for recipe for that beautiful carrot cake!! ❤️
Does the vinegar/citrus peel cleaner smell of vinegar?
Love your videos, they are soo interesting!
I love what you do god bless you
Just came across your channel and I love it!
Inspiring. Thanks
You found so much good stuff!😃
lovely stuff
love your jumper! was it thrifted or did you buy it? if so where from?? x
It's thrifted 🌿👍
i hit the subscribe button right when you said there’s no such thing as juice cleanses. tooooo many people think they can “cleanse the toxins out of their system”
What did she mean by that?
Are you Danish? Stumbled upon your channel now, fun to find similar youtubers!
Haha my darling you always make me giggle "you have a liver" 😁
Nutroast could be a suggestion ☺️
how precious that yeast did become two weeks later :D
where do you live that the store throws so much good food :O we dont do that here anymore in croatia
OMG why do they trow away a full package of good food!? What dumpster did you dive for all this? Its nuts! (no phun intended)
