This is why 1970's "Make For TV" movies were so great. They almost always throw in a bit of a twist at the end, that jumps right out and says, "Gotcha!" They were always well made and entertaining. To be totally honest, most of these movies were so much better than what was being released in the theaters at that time. And, because of the production quality, they were most always the topic of conversation the next day. And, I was there!

I was in 4th grade when this came on TV. Back then, everyone got TV Guide, so you knew what was coming on TV at least a week in advance. All the kids at school were talking about this one, and everyone planned to watch it. My parents decided it wasn’t appropriate so, that night, we watched something else. The next day, everyone at school was talking about it, so I pretended I had watched it, too. I doubt most of my class actually did watch it. Everyone just made up stories about the Devil’s Triangle. I was amazed at how many of my classmates in Louisiana had been on sailboats in the Atlantic with their dads and uncles. Anyway, for the next few weeks that dominated the playground conversation and was the subject of many book reports.

Isn't it strange how that first fear stays with you? It's akin to losing one's virginity, in that it remains an exclamation marker of a life point. That facing the dark moment is as inevitable as the death of self humans fear most.
I'm older, so my movie scare more remote. TVs were a novelty when this happened for me. A movie at a neighbor's house on their overwhelming 19 inch screen was an occasion. One as engraved on my six year old mind as the moon landings would be a decade and a half later.
"A dark and stormy night" brought me and my older brother to dark shores in a small Kentucky town one winter. By parental arrangement, I would get to see a whole TV program, not just the passing glimpse of motion in a department store window.
The movie was "The Devil and Danial Webster". (Yeah, that Webster, of law and dictionary fame.) As best I recall, it was a Faustian deal, where the jury was killers and Nazis and smoking pirates ( not high baseball fans, you numbskulls!!).
Anyway, as sophisticated as this sounds now, you have to remember TVs were scarce, and we lived a very rural life and were only "in town" to visit, so I hadn't even been to what was called a "moving picture show" in my life.
So when a burning witness in this courtroom drama over a man's soul, flew right at the screen, with me two feet away in a dark room, I promptly pissed myself, ran from the house and down the street, arriving breathless at my grandparents. Everyone had a laugh at my fear, which is now a little appreciated art of family therapy practiced by folks of that era.
Sure, I could maybe find that old movie somewhere in this internet jungle, but at no profit, and some loss, to who I am. That first scare was never equaled again, not by war, not by tragedies, not by "close calls" not even by my own NDE. To chuckle at the triteness and simplicity of that movie would be a fool's trade. It is my sanity marker, a distant judgement stone for later realities.
Cherish these things, for they too shaped who and what you are now. In my years I have seen the evil men do, the mistakes of roads others took, and I never made any deals at the peril of my self/soul. I always wanted to avoid that smokey courtroom.

The Bermuda Triangle mystery has always been fascinating. I remember watching episodes of Leonard Nimoy's show, "In Search Of."
Years later I saw a documentary where they were examining deep-sea, ice methane deposits, formed from decaying marine animal and plant matter, on the slopes in the great depths of the ocean in that area as being the cause.
It was proposed that underwater avalanches of the material breaking free would release methane as the ice field pulverized under pressure and would send methane rushing to the surface.
Such an eruption would turn the surface to foam and scuttle ships. A large enough eruption would eject the heavy gas high enough into the sky to starve low-flying aircraft engines of the oxygen needed for combustion.
A test with scale model cargo tankers quickly sank the model ships to the bottom of a pool. People don't breath methane either, which would explain why so many disappear with no distress call.

Mostly, we talked about Pagnolini. His faith was put to the ultimate test that day. Haig was thrown to his death, the Atlantic Ocean is getting closer by the second, Lucifer is standing next to him saying 'accept me and reject Him, and I will let you live.' But, Pagnolini wouldn't give in. I have a picture in my mind of Pagnolini standing before God and the Lord saying to him 'my son, you acted with great bravery. Enter my kingdom; YOU'RE A BADASS!'

Some other good ones (theatrical, not TV) are Tales From the Crypt (from 1972, NOT the later version), and its sequel The Vault of Horror; The House That Dripped Blood; From Beyond the Grave; Tales That Witness Madness; and Asylum (again, the 70s version, NOT the later film of the same title). Incidentally, all the films I've listed up till now in this post are 'anthology-style', made up of several shorter stories, so I hope you like that sort of thing. Also the films Suspiria and Inferno by Dario Argento are must-sees for any horror fan: very stylish and creepy.
