Not too bad for a old movie. I suppose this film was made in the 70s. 25 years after the war ended it was still a fresh memory at this time. But what most of the comment says it was interesting since the beginning of the movie. Compare to new US movies where they are always talking for saying nothing.
I remember seeing the poster for this film on billboards and bus stops when I was a little kid. Never watched it though. I just remember the skull ship. I thought Ghost Ship was a remake of this because the posters are similar. I'm glad I finally get to watch it after over 40 years.
Been a fan of this movie since I was 12 (about 12 years ago). I suspect that the real life prototype for the ship in this movie may have been the German auxiliary cruiser/merchant raider Kormoran. But the actual freighter they used for the film was an American ship called the Maurine K, built in 1965, and scrapped in 1986.
How do you, as a 24 year old, know the name of the ship and when it was built? It looks like a late 50s to early 60s ship to me. There were no “bulk carrier” freighters, which this is, during WWII. An auxiliary cruiser would make more sense, along with Ashland wearing that badge instead of a U-Boat badge.
@@Komet163B I mean, I wouldn't have to be born in the 50s to know the name of the ship. I'm a ship enthusiast, and I've done my research. The ship you see in the movie was built in 1965. And she was called Maurine K at the time of filming this movie. But I was saying that what inspired the idea for the movie's fictional ship (not how it looks, but its actual purpose) was the German ship Kormoran. She was a freighter built in 1938, and converted to an auxiliary cruiser/merchant raider (a ship that disguises itself as a cargo ship to raid other ships) when the war started.
@@transatlanticnostalgia4655 The ship was poorly maintained and had a hard life for being only 15 years old when the movie was released. You can see in most of the scenes it’s not even moving. Instead a camera boat is moving around it to try to make it look like it can move under its own power. They refer to it as an interrogation/torture ship which is pure fiction/fantasy from the script writer. Being an auxiliary cruiser/raider was not “evil” enough for their story. It’s kind of a Shock Waves rip off, replacing the Nazi zombies with Nazi ghosts. Though Shock Waves also had a freighter ghost ship. The ship wreck seen in that movie I’ve heard of, and still exists, unlike this Maurine ship, which your the only person that seems to know anything about it. You probably know the name of the ship that the German order telegraph belongs to. And it’s interesting that a British/Canadian production used a dilapidated American vessel in their film. If the Death Ship were to have actually attempted to ram a cruise ship, it most likely would’ve resulted in the sinking of the Death Ship, instead of the cruise ship.
Same happened to me I was with my mother and my grandmother and all of us were terrorized we didn’t slept for the following two nights after watching the movie and had nightmares for more than a month.
@@rogerrendzak8055 now I’m ready to watch it, plus that’s the censored version, at that time when I was young I definitely wasn’t ready to watch it. Nor was ready to watch it my mom and my grandma.
There's a few things that you probably have noticed It was a German World War II freighter, probably had a time or two used in the Kriegsmarine, lived a relatively anticlimactic life. When the crew of the ocean liner picks up the echo of the approaching ghost ship on their radar, the close-up of the ship's radar imagery is a reverse-image video clip of the fog-covered "Skull Island", taken from King Kong (1976). The footage showing the movement of the Death Ship was the result of filming from a small boat moving around it. The crew shot for about an hour before the Death Ship broke down. The rest of the required shots were achieved by faking movement, as the broken down vessel was anchored and stationary. As the ghost ship collided with the cruise liner, brief scenes of an explosion, a grand piano falling between decks, and the engine room flooding were cut in. These scenes were from The Last Voyage (1960). When first looking in the bathroom there is a pin-up photo on the wall. The photo is of actress Betty Grable. The black and white musical film shown on the death ship is Everything Is Rhythm (1936).
@1:19:21 The DEATH SHIP is still out there.. Cruising the vast oceans, as it hunts for new victims, for all eternity. Its thirst for blood🩸, never ending..
Made in 1980? I would've guessed 1960 from the manner of speech, and behavior of the cast. Interesting plot, something like that has been in other films with variations on that theme, most notably "Ghost Ship". I'm thinking the engine was steam powered, but it may have been a Diesel since there wasn't a boiler room shown, but who knows.
The film has a foreign quality to it like it sounds dubbed but you must not know much about 1960 vs 1980, there were no cruise ships with Discos on them for example 20 years earlier. Go watch a few movies from 1960 and get back.
I watched and recorded this pic, back in the mid-90's!! It's a 'GHOSTSHIP', long before "GHOSTSHIP"!! "DEATH SHIP" is NOT, the first movie ever made, about a haunted ship/boat!! Actually the original is "THE GHOSTSHIP", from 1942-43. It's about a couple who purchase a schooner, that's haunted. Not very scary, but an interesting ghost 👻, story, and worth viewing 👀!! That's the first one, of the genre. Then this. …………One particular note though. Humorous or not, isn't it coincidental, that a WWll German freighter (even though, it was obviously constructed, later ), picks up a group of people, but the first one it knocks off, is the Jewish, guy (Saul Rubinek)🤔…………?
If anyone in this movie ever won an Oscar 🏆 for anything at all they should give it back. The ship deserves an Oscar 👏. Its acting was better than all of the actors combined.
George Kennedy rightfully won an Oscar for best supporting actor in Cool Hand Luke (Paul Newman should have got one for best actor, but for some reason that will forever remain a mystery, he didn’t). Watch his performance in that, and then rethink your statement.
@@tommyhemlock7915Loads of idiots in the comments think this is the worst movie they’ve ever seen. They obviously haven’t seen a really bad movie, with really bad acting. There are hundreds of movies far, far, far worse than this one.

We thank you so much for the movie ❤
I remember seeing the poster for this film on billboards and bus stops when I was a little kid. Never watched it though. I just remember the skull ship. I thought Ghost Ship was a remake of this because the posters are similar. I'm glad I finally get to watch it after over 40 years.

George Kennedy, Wow this a Nostalgic moment, got love these ole films😃

How are you doing
Aku suka film ini.
Dulu nonton di TV 😊
Un bel film godibile fino alla fine

Wow! Forty-two years ago. That's even more time than the end of WWII and the making of this movie. Damn, I feel old.

Enjoying , to this move have save it to my playlist and George Kennedy is always giving great performance... nice cast also
There's a few things that you probably have noticed
It was a German World War II freighter, probably had a time or two used in the Kriegsmarine, lived a relatively anticlimactic life.
Thanks a million for the miscellaneous facts; they're really interesting, esp the subtle imagery ones! ☠️
Whatever, still it's a great movie.
Why and how do you know all of this and are you sure it’s a German freighter because I looked it up and there was no such design
@@freightersonthegreatlakes995 It was listed in the movie trivia sourced from IMDB
Yeah I noticed the radar image was an island and not a ship but it was King Kong's Island and yeah I thought it was funny.
This was a very good movie I must say.
Thank you ☺️ nice movie I've never seen it before ☺️
👌❤
Omg, this was the 1st movie I saw alone. My friend did not turn up so I went in to watch on my own. I was 15.
Remember seeing this character's death scene @24:25 on tv as a kid back in the 80's...it haunted me for years!
Yeah it's a real foreskin-thanker
My first time watching this movie❤
@1:19:21 The DEATH SHIP is still out there.. Cruising the vast oceans, as it hunts for new victims, for all eternity. Its thirst for blood🩸, never ending..
I love seeing movies on TH-cam, but only if I can escape in the comments, who is with me?😊

I liked it.... takes you back in time (1980) decent
This was a pretty good creepy movie ! Good acting and all and storyline.
Honestly
Interesting flic... Spooky and thrilling.Enjoyed a lot.
A must watch... ❤❤❤❤❤
A good and imaginative eighties horror film thanks for posting.
Watchable movie. With love from India
love the poster for this movie
Very nice movie .... Great thanks
