I found a beautiful apothecary cabinet. Perfect size for seed storage. The cabinet is absolutely gorgeous. I had to have it. Works great for seed storage. I have the photo box for seeds. When I want to take seeds to the garden. I also have. Metal trays with handles I got at the dollar store. I have a system that works. Ty for showing us .....your system. Happy gardening
Ken thank you for all your hard work editing these videos. All the extra effort you put in really shows ( the pictures of every single variety of sunflower) and is really appreciated. These videos wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you again for all your hard work and dedication.
Just an FYI for those who are considering sunflowers. If you choose a variety with a light colored center, your bees will stand out very clearly and will be very easy targets for the birds who eat them. My bee population was getting absolutely demolished and I couldn't figure out what was going on. So I started to observe out my window and could see the poor bees being all picked off, within seconds of landing. I had the same issue with liatris. It was so bad that I had to cut all the sunflowers down that didn't have a dark center and the liatris had to be moved to a more protected area.
It took me a month to get to actually creating my spreadsheet and I searched for this video to refresh my memory. I had taken notes when I watched this video, but the refresh really helped. Thanks for having a fantastic reference for us to go back to! Love your content and presentation style. Keep 'em coming!
First off- Ken, you ROCK! Laura is always quick to give you acknowledgment but you should hear it from US too. Such a pleasure watching such well made videos! Also, Laura, you mentioned the seeds that viewers have sent to you. Wouldn’t it be a fun idea to plant some of these viewer flower seed varieties in a section of the flower garden or maybe have its own ‘flower patch’ as a nice tribute. Would be a interesting project to watch I think 😃.
As an ADHDer is wish my whole life could be organized like that. That spreadsheet and those bins would be an awesome way to organize a lot of things. I haven’t watched a video of yours that I didn’t like but this one has to be one of my favorite ones it was very calming for me. 💜
I have a beginning gardening friend- giving her marigold, cosmos, zinnia, and basic veg seeds as Christmas gift. Wish I had thought of this at end of summer when they were easily available!!!
Ever since I saw a video of yours with Johnny’s, I ordered them and will always stick by them. They are amazing and their website is so helpful. I even chatted online with an expert regarding my questions and got help right away. I love getting the new and rare seeds I won’t find at my local stores.
I’m a college student and have no room for a garden at all but I live vicariously through Laura partly because we share the same name and partly because I wish I had a garden lol
Laura watching you go through your seeds made me realize it’s been about a year since I found you. You have inspired me, motivated me and gave me confidence in my own gardening. It’s been a great year!! Thank you ❤
I was so happy to see that I am not the only person that orders their seeds early. I love watching seed hauls because I ALWAYS walk away with a few new ones to try. Thank you, Laura for the inspiration! I can't wait for Spring!
I ordered mine as well! A number of channels recommended to order this year to make certain that the seeds are in stock. Next spring may be too late in some cases.
A seed haul in the Hartley sounds like the perfect way to kick off a Monday! I have my list already started and I’m sure I’m going to be adding more! I challenged myself last year to start all of my annuals from seed. I had to give in and pick up some Supertunias because they are such performers!
Laura, conditional formatting or lookup tables can AUTO-color code for you. You can also 'freeze top row' to allow you to see the title no matter how far down the list you go. Thanks for the ideas! Good luck
Suggestion on your excel spreadsheet,, to the left of your list, insert 4 columns. One for each planting stage (early, mid, late, direct sow). Then under each column, insert an "X". Select all the headers across the top. In top toolbar > select from top toolbar "Data" > Select the icon "filter". Now all the headers of your columns have a pulldown. Use these to select just the "X" or ascending or descending. The end goal is to sort the sheet to have a list of what you need to start now without searching. Goo luck! Love, love, love your channel. 🌻
🎅🎄🤶Good morning, Laura, from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 Happy Seed Organizing 🌻🌷🪻⚘️🌼 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of Our Garden Answer Family ❤️
I use a photo storage box that I got from Michaels and have categorised the seeds according to when they need to be planted. I also put the number (weeks before last frost) on the packet. That helps me put the packet into the right box even if I am behind in reorganising. It works better for me this way. I have a separate category for hardy annuals too.
This video was so good for so many reasons! I could relate to your procrastination and the feeling of being overwhelmed by the task, Most of all it inspires me to get organized and order some more seeds. For years i have purchased the 6 packs and 4" pots as starts for everything. With the rising cost of those it's become obvious to me that it's time to start some things from seed. A million thanks Laura and Aaron for this video and all of your enthusiastic inspiration and knowledge in all of your videos!! My front and back yards have never looked better -thanks to you.
Laura, even though I've seen you organize your seeds before, this is the first time I've had enough where I need to organize mine. Thank you so much for sharing this information with us today. That spreadsheet was particularly helpful. ☺️
OMGosh,it’s insane how similar our process is! I use narrow cardboard boxes for my seeds, broken down into perennials, annuals, hardy annuals, biennials and like you my pumpkins have their own box! I have so many seeds they fill several bookcases in my office! I separate species with a card stock piece of paper that sticks up and I write the species on that, alphabetically for efficiency like a card catalog but better;) I also print out Johnnys seed growing info for each species and wrap it around the card stock and I pull it out onto a clipboard when I sow. A lot of my seed I get from Geo because it’s cheapest but Johnnys has the best grow library! I took the Floret course years ago and her excel spreadsheet is the best tool I’ve ever used on organizing my grow plans. It’s all formulated and you can plug in a chosen number of weeks to do succession planning like your didiscus and it automates the dates for you. That one thing made the price tag worth it for me because I use that thing every single day. I’ve already started my lisianthus and eucalyptus…can’t wait for spring!
Hi Laura, I sat down this afternoon and made a spreadsheet of my seed inventory; thanks for the inspiration and ideas! I have a column for when to sow the seeds, but then decided to use a "Sow Date" column and calculated in my head for my zone when to sow each seed packet, recording the month and day into the spreadsheet. Next I resorted everything by sow date first, then by type, then variety. So now the list is in order of when to sow the seeds, and I can easily look at it each month to see what's next for my to-do list. Love your channel!
Love your organization which I'll be doing this year! I know I have doubles which having a list will help with that. And i appreciate Ken editing with photos. I know the time it takes popping those photos in a video.
I flew to Florida for a few days and didn’t have time to watch until now. I’m in the airport and I am so happy to sit here and catch up while I wait. I didn’t realize how much I miss my early morning wake up with you and your family!
Milkweed is also an aphid magnet and I planted it 3 years ago from seeds I collected and this year - I finally got monarch butterflies and they laid eggs and we had 6 butterflies hatch - I live in zone 7-9 in the California High Desert - Palmdale - we are going down into the mid 20's tonight and got a kiss of snow two days ago - hope we get more rain this year - its been brutal the last two years - Love our CA Poppy fields and if we get a few more good rain storms this season - it will be beautiful!!! - Just love your Channel!!!! You and Aaron rock!!!
☕️Thank you so much Laura, for bringing in some spring today! Glorious seed selection and your background there in the Hartley is stunning. Enjoy a great day everyone 🎄🤶🏻❤️
Terima kasih. Laura From the first time I watched your videos, you have changed my life, I got a lot of knowledge after watching your videos, and I have watched all of your videos And I share your video with my friends
I use Google sheet as well. In fact, your system is almost identical to what I do. The thing you didn’t mention that I find so helpful is to put the app on your phone as well. That way when you’re out shopping, you can quickly look and see if you need a certain type of seed or not, I order a lot but I also buy a lot locally. I update mine every time I plant seeds because I have my phone with me. It makes it so easy so I never have this huge updating. I also update in the fall as I collect seed. I do note on the spreadsheet then if it purchase seed or collected
I really enjoyed seeing you organizing all of your seeds. I'm going to winter sow some seeds this year. I'm excited to get started and you inspire me all the time! Thank you for that!!!
This is at the top of your most helpful videos! I love how you just don't over-think it and have come up with a system that is easy for practically anyone to do even in Alaska! Thank you!
When I watched this video, I remembered how you did a similar video upstairs in your first grow room. Only one or two bins. Now...that pile was huge! More land more seeds. Watching all the growth of your property and planting as been an adventure! I enjoyed every minute!
Although it’s a little early to do this, I’m hosting a virtual winter sowing workshop at work this week (as our end of year/holiday party) for the garden club I’m a co-captain of. The workshop is 100% inspired by the videos you’ve created and I volunteered to lead this club after becoming more confident in my gardening skills from watching your videos!
Hi Laura, I started watching you beginning of this year and have learnt so much. I am inspired and motivated to do more in my small backyard in Southern California. I have to share something funny. My teenage daughter came home from college this past weekend and as we were sitting to watch TV, she asked "Mom, how is the Garden Answer lady doing?". And then when were putting ribbons on the tree, I told her that Laura did it like this and then my daughter goes "Mom, she is not God, you can do however you want", hahaha
This was very enjoyable! Most of us can improve our organization. Thanks for inspiring to do better. January seed starting begins for me with Lisianthus.
Because of your channel and another gardening channel, I ordered seeds and bulbs from Johnny’s Seeds. Another feature I loved about them was the sheets of paper on proper tulip and daffodil care. It was wonderful! So even if things comes in bags, like the bulbs, they will provide the information on a print out. 🤗🤗🤗
I love watching other people's organizational skills.I did something similar last year with the spreadsheet. What I found was once I got started plantng I didn't refer back to it very often . Since I was winter sowing My seeds I didn't need to check how many weeks before moving them outside. I was not good at keeping notes on which seeds were successful with winter sewing. That's an area I'd like to be better at. I can definitely see how having your inventory set up and completed Makes you ready to know what you need to get started. A t heart I am a person who loves to be organized Unfortunately I don't always Maintain the system once it set up. 😕 💜💙💚💛😎
You are wonderful 🥰 Your zone is the same as mine! 😁 I was raised in a higher elevation, zone 4, a limited growing time zone. Now I'm getting to grow so many seeds I've never known... I get planting more than I handle by myself! I say not this much never again during freeze dry harvesting! and now I'm taking notes of favorites, and schedules to start, and where they'll grow best, and so excited to grow a more manageable garden 🤔🤠
OMG A FIELD OF SUNFLOWERS WOULD BE AMAZING!!! IF EVERYONE AGREES THUMB UP THIS MESSAGE!! LETS DO THIS GUYS!!!!!!! LOVE YOU LAURA YOUR AMAZING! every morning I put your video of my TV and my 8 month old daughter thinks your a person in the room and smiles and baby babbles the whole video talking to you! We both love you and whole family so much!!! Thank you for the joy you bring to our lives!!!!!!
Love the organization! You should grab 1 or 2 more of those bins and label, "used" or "to be recategorized". Then you can do away with all your random boxes and baskets!
Thanks Laura!!! I better get my seed order in NOW! Everything you mention is sold out soon after. I wish you could work with Johnny's so they would be prepared for inventory increases based on your videos. Thank you for the seed haul! I'm ready for spring already!!
Just saw some tubs like this at Walmart and made me think of you. I think I'm try them. Thank you. I like that your not limited to small amounts of seeds in your method.
Good morning Laura! Even though I am one of your armchair gardeners, I watched with total interest this video. Whether it is gardening or another interest, organizational skills are something I always admire. Hugs from N.C..❤️
My seed stash is an equally big mess. I am so glad I am not the only one. This motivates me to get mine inventoried and finished so I know what I need to pick up.
Thank you for this, now I know where to start. Thankfully I don’t have as much as you, but I still like being organized. Great place to sit and enjoy your work😉
Hi Laura, T.U. so much for your organization ideas 💡 which is well needed this snowy cold day for me to do. As always can't wait for these tiny little seedlings to poke their heads out and say "Here I am!" 🌱🌱🌱 P.S. Have a Merry Christmas ❣️ 🎄
Soo inspiring. It is December 13, 2022. I am a novis at seed sowing. And I love your seed collection. This makes me long for spring. Can’t wait until I get my seeds all together.
Morning. I love to go through my seeds and organize them. Took a minute, but I realized the lights on the 🌲 go on and off. Though I was seeing things. LOL. Enjoy your day!
Laura, this presentation is perfect! You gave me info that is really helpful. The visual is wonderful, from the snow, the plants, the tree, to your hair and top! A favorite video for me. Thank you! 💮🎄❄️
I was sitting at my computer updating my spreadsheet and refiling my seeds--I clicked on TH-cam and decided to watch. You were doing exactly what I was--or I was doing exactly what you were! Right down to the same container for Staples--I looked high and low to find the best container! LOL Wish I could share my photo.
Wow! You've inspired me to contact my local seed supplier and get myself a new catalogue for 2023. Can't wait to get planting again. Just have to get through winter...
LOVED this informational video. I saw on your Jan.1 recap you suggested doing more educational videos. I love those the most. No wait.....the flower arranging videos ( which you mentioned wanting to do more of) are my fav.. Well, let's call it a tie! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
We all have our own way of doing things and whatever works for us is the way to do. It is fun to share that information and I sure did enjoy watching this video seeing how you do yours. I know you live in dry area so you don't need desiccant packs in with your seed but I live in northwest Florida so I buy desiccant packs in bulk and put it in with my seeds. I organize my spreadsheet a little different with tabs for categories but I have one main tab with all of the seeds listed, one column lists the tab where to find them. Instead of color highlights I have one column that I list the time to plant and I use the data feature on the spreadsheet to filter that information. I file my seed packs in baggies that I label according to category which is on each tab, so in other words one baggie per tab on worksheet. I place desiccant packs in the baggies and then place baggies in a very large basket my niece gave me as a Christmas gift some years ago. I like your bins that you use and I may have to get me some of those because they would be a lot more tidy and easier to find.
Love this video. Just wondering if you’ve ever heard of the online software Notion. I’ve used it for my seed catalogue and it’s phenomenal. Lots of features that google sheets or excel can’t do like adding timelines, board views, calendar views, etc. You can also continue to use your color coding system. You can also transfer info and tables from different platforms into Notion (if you wanted to transfer this seed database without having to type out everything by hand). I’m kind of a nerd when it comes to organization software, so this was such a cool addition to my life when I found it. I use it for my work and we run our company from this platform. I thought you and your husband would enjoy checking this out, since y’all have to be so organized with your work and careers. Anyway, I hope this helps. You’ve been such an inspiration to my garden life over the years, I hope this simple advice could help you in a small way. Thank you for being such a great example in the way y’all do life.
Laura, what an impressive seed organization system. You never cease to amaze me! If I’m able to use 1/100 of your gardening wisdom I feel lucky. Thank you
Great video!! I have lots of ideas on how to create my spreadsheet. I think I will code each entry, so I can sort and print it by when it needs to be planted. I was wondering, Laura, if you could do a video on getting your seed starting equipment ready? Taking inventory of shelving, heat mats, lighting, power strips, timers for the lights, trays for the seeds, soil, a fan, spray mister to moisten seeds, etc. There is a lot that goes into starting the seeds, and I think many viewers will find this tremendously helpful. 🪴🪴
I just ordered from johnny's seeds for the first time and picked up both the procut plum and butter cream sunflower! I find growing sunflowers so satisfying because they are such an easy flower to grow especially in CA! It is so funny to hear someone else have the same abundance of Borage as I have had. I work on a farm and Borage takes over our fields. We try to keep as much of it since the bees love it so much but sometimes I need to pull plants out to make sure our veggies have enough space to grow.
Thanks for explaining your seed organizing and spreadsheet. Loved it. Updating the spreadsheet would be a chore, but what a great "winter" garden project.
Good golly girl! My mouth dropped open when you started spreading all your seed packets out on the table to organize! I love organizing but holy cow! What a huge job! The finished job looked fabulous! I love how organized you are!
Excel tip: select cell area you wish to format(like a column), then on the home tab click conditional formatting to auto color cells. Next click new rule, then format only cells that contain, specific text (2nd drop down), put in the text you want to find, in format select the fill tab to color cell background. If you ever need to edit go back into conditional formatting under manage rules.

I love this kind of organizing video and that it is about seeds is even better. Thank you!
Thank you, Ken, for all the pictures. Can't wait until next year's flowering season
Thank you Ken, you are doing an awesome job! Merry Christmas 🎄
Yes, and I loved the Igor clip! 🤩
Ken is killing it! He even put in the young frankenstein clip!
This was soooo funny. Watched it 2x and it made me laugh out loud!! Your editor is the BEST!!!
Ken thank you for all your hard work editing these videos. All the extra effort you put in really shows ( the pictures of every single variety of sunflower) and is really appreciated. These videos wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you again for all your hard work and dedication.
Anyone else thrilled when a 37 minute video pops up on a Monday morning? ❤

Wow that's interesting
Oh my! Thanks for that, I’ll be more careful!!!
Thank you for letting us know, valuable information 🤗
Wow , who knew that. Thanks
When I get my seeds in the mail, it’s like I have won the lottery. I get so excited. ❤

Would love to see Laura's take on an English kitchen herb garden. Love Garden Answer and thanks for all you do!
Impatient gardener did a cool herb garden a few years ago. She used one of the herbs to form x's in the beds then planted in them it was beautiful.
Thank you for the Marty Feldman & Gene Wilder “Igor” snippet!!! Made my weekend!!! ✌🏻❤️🌻🌼🌸🌷🌺🌹

I would love to know what it’s like NOT to have ADHD.
I have a beginning gardening friend- giving her marigold, cosmos, zinnia, and basic veg seeds as Christmas gift. Wish I had thought of this at end of summer when they were easily available!!!

Good Morning! 🎅 I am a little late! My family is recovering from the flu. Watching this morning is just what the doctor ordered! 🙂🎄☃️❄️
Your seed system is quite tidy. Love it. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Tidy, lol! That’s Laura’s favorite word!
Definitely big job but necessary. Looks fantastic. So nice to be organized. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us. Appreciated.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Good morning Sweet Laura, blessed soul. The Christmas Tree is BEAUTIFUL. @ Your working in the HARTLEY, what a wonderful sight.

When your mom was in her cast, and stuck at home, I suggested she work on your seed inventory. Now I’m glad you didn’t listen to me!
I really enjoyed seeing you organizing all of your seeds. I'm going to winter sow some seeds this year. I'm excited to get started and you inspire me all the time! Thank you for that!!!
It's crazy how fast you filled the hartleywith plants!! Love it
I have always wondered how you know when and what time to plant your seeds. This was very helpful Laura! Thank you for sharing! 🌺
Thanks for taking us through your seed haul! You are way more organized than me. I appreciate the tips!
This is at the top of your most helpful videos! I love how you just don't over-think it and have come up with a system that is easy for practically anyone to do even in Alaska! Thank you!

This video is beautiful! The lighting with the plants and snow in the background just 🤌🤌🤌. All the great info is so helpful too. Thank you!!
Enjoyed your seed organization video. What a pleasant couple of days sitting in the Hartley! Missed seeing Russel! Lol
You're always interesting. You keep everything so organized. Love your videos and family very much.
I'm ALREADY eager for spring! And it's not even Christmas yet. This is going to be a looooong winter. 😂
Laura effect! LOL!!!
Oh me too Elana!
I'm overwhelmed just watch. High respect young lady. This is fun watching.
So beautiful to see the Hartley surrounded by snow while working among the tropical plants.
What a video pack with lots of great advice on seeds and how to keep them until your ready to use them. Just a great video for us thank you Laura
What would be an overwhelming task for many, you make it look easy. Great ideas on the organization.
It’s like having a baby, a year or two down the road and you want another one, you forgot the pain, lol!
@@cynthiafisher9907 😂 Soooo to True 🥰
OMG A FIELD OF SUNFLOWERS WOULD BE AMAZING!!! IF EVERYONE AGREES THUMB UP THIS MESSAGE!! LETS DO THIS GUYS!!!!!!! LOVE YOU LAURA YOUR AMAZING! every morning I put your video of my TV and my 8 month old daughter thinks your a person in the room and smiles and baby babbles the whole video talking to you! We both love you and whole family so much!!! Thank you for the joy you bring to our lives!!!!!!
Watching you work with only the music playing with the most fun of all! ❤
Love the organization! You should grab 1 or 2 more of those bins and label, "used" or "to be recategorized". Then you can do away with all your random boxes and baskets!
Not to mention how cool it is to update and organize your seeds in your beautiful Hartley.
Hello Grace, how are you doing today?
Gotta love a seed haul! I did the new look dusty miller last year and it looked great in containers & my window box!
Wow! Love this! Thanks for the pics of the seeds and such a wonderful way to organize seeds! ❤️
BEST VLOG EVER!!!! Love love loved. Thank you.
Great educational video! What a wonderful feeling to have everything organized! As always, Laura is an inspiration to get my own work done.
Soo inspiring. It is December 13, 2022. I am a novis at seed sowing. And I love your seed collection. This makes me long for spring. Can’t wait until I get my seeds all together.
Thanks for teaching us Laura!
LOL
Wish I could share my photo.
Wow! You've inspired me to contact my local seed supplier and get myself a new catalogue for 2023. Can't wait to get planting again. Just have to get through winter...
I was just looking for a great flower list with pictures. Ty for this! I didn’t do enough flowers in my garden last year. This year I will. ❤
Thank you, glad to see you in the Hartley, how fun! Your organizing is great and helpful!
Must be so satisfying! Thanks for sharing Laura!
Laura,
I want to make sure to wish you a …
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
