I just love Russell's show-of-his-own that went on in the background of this video! He is choreographed like a ballet and appears to love the higher regions of the greenhouse, on tabletops and weaving gracefully through the containers of plants! I wonder whether he is having an inside "jungle adventure" in his imagination!

I put the seeds in individual cells and then put the cells in the jugs. That makes separating the seedlings easier.

I would pull your jugs to the front of the pallet so they are not under the barn overhang quite as much, They need all the snow and rain they can get in your climate. :)

I’m in Australia, in a cold and some what dry area ( in Winter) so I’m looking forward to trying this in a few month’s time. At the moment though, I’m busy watering my borders and potager, harvesting strawberries, raspberries, black berries, tomatoes and courgettes- and watching my apple, apricot and plum trees fruiting up.
A tip for sealing the containers. Rather than using tape, make holes with a hole punch, for pipe cleaners or twist ties for easy opening and closing without the stickiness of tape. Love your videos and thank you for all the information on winter seeding over the past several years!
I love Winter Sowing❤️ I’m in 4a & it saves a ton of room on my indoor growing racks. I grow lavender, coneflowers & daisies this way each year & they grow beauty, healthy plants. One thing I do is sprinkle a little vermiculite & cinnamon on top to help prevent algae growth. I have also started my squash, gourds & pumpkins this way to give them a jump start but I wait until April to Winter Sow them. Love winter sowing❤️
Glad to read your comment and see you are zone 4a, as I am too. You find to wait till April and still look for cold tolerant seeds?

@@joannagel4681 Nothing more helpful than an experienced gardener in your own zone! Thanks so much for the schedule. I started a lot of seeds last year but a few didn't work out because I started too early/late. 😂 I didn't think a few weeks would make such a big difference but it really does in a short growing season.
Thank you for sharing even more stuff to winter sow. I live in northeastern Oklahoma and I'm in zone 6 like Laura, so she always helps me out. Sound like you love gardening also. It's so awesome. It's a wonderful hobbie. Also a wonderful feeling.
Looked back on my notes it was April 14th I winter sowed my squash( summer & winter squash) & pumpkins, gourds & broccoli / brassicas

Wouldn’t it be nice if Laura wrote a book (or series of books) with all of these cool tips for gardeners like us? A lot of this information I’ve learned from hanging out at garden centers talking to old timers who have a lifetime of knowledge to share. If you write it I’ll buy it Laura! 🦋

Hello sweet baby. If you have pots then you can cut the bottom of the milk jug off and place over the pots. This removes the taping step of the process. Additionally the black pots should warm up better assisting in GermanNation.

Kitties and poppies 2 of my favorites
We are in Manitoba Canada zone 3 and the way I’ve done my poppies in the past was I did their stratification period in the fridge and then when we were beginning to melt( in March or so) that is when I would sprinkle them outside on the snow or on any bare soil patches. They came up much better.
I planted some Leprechaun Gold columbine outside yesterday and a couple of cells in the refrigerator to see which one does better. I might try a few in a jug too, just to have another technique to try. The jug method was a complete failure for me last year, but the drought has moved here too and Feb was crazy busy. Plus, it could have been all me not keeping the misted enough or maybe it was because they were on the southside of the deck. Idk, it was a growth experience, not for the plants, but for me. ;)
Winter sowing is such a wonderful method of starting seeds! HIGHLY RECOMMEND putting a label inside of the container as well... just to make sure you know what is growing in there if the weather wears off the marker! ;) Thanks for all the inspiration!

They should know to listen to you, Laura, lol!! I remember a video from last winter where you and your mom planted poppy seeds at her house by sprinkling them over the snow. I wondered if that was successful and if any of them came up. Also, about how many poppy seeds did you put in each milk jug? Thanks for making my morning cup of coffee extra enjoyable every day!!
I think she said a while ago that they didn't see any come up at her mom's. I did the sprinkle seeds on the snow method here in Minnesota and it worked really well. I think your moisture levels in the spring are really important.

I've been winter sowing for years. The poppies are so sensitive that I found direct sowing to be the best method. Though, Iceland poppies are always a challenge.
I got tons of poppies using this method.

Audrey I would direct see them now where we have some cold weather left; I do know they need a cold period in order to germinate.

Don't forget about the barn overhang. I think one year they didn't get enough moisture because of the overhang, can't quite remember though.

Glad to hear artichokes are aphid magnets. Now i know dont bother. I tried to grow one last year it grew only a foot tall which took forever. Never got a bloom. I only planted it to see the gorgeous flower. Never happened i was disappointed

Good morning! Could this not be more perfect timing, I will be starting a variety of milkweed seeds, as well as others starting today. My husband will be glad not to see that pile of water jugs....well, now they will be out in the garden. ;)
Same here! North Texas zone 8. I actually was going to start milkweed inside under grow lights but I’m wondering if this would work better. My concern for inside is that we will be traveling a couple of weeks in March and watering is an issue then. Outside may be the way to go. I have no experience with Milkweed germination and I’ve heard it’s not easy…
@@heatherderganc5984 winter sow them as the cold stratification will help. I’ve done butterfly weed and I have many plants now. Trying the yellow this year as I only have one of those and some critter keeps eating the seed pods every year.😏
I used winter sowing method with wary grey poppies last season and of course much more seeds than I had to, but it worked out great! I took the whole small bucket I used and without disturbing the toots, planted the whole “cake” in my border. It made a wonderful spot with hundreds of blooms for over a month! 😮 I just was really careful watering often and also giving them nutrients more often than elsewhere.
Hi! What climate are you and how often did you water (frequency and duration), did you spray or pour? Lol I'm sorry for the many questions... I am young but going to try using spare backyard space in my boyfriend's rental to beautiful the area.
@@p_roduct9211 I live in Sweden, and about US6 climate zone. It was a rainy spring last year so I didn’t even have to water them more than a couple of times. When I watered I have a mist on my garden hose so I used that.
I have done winter sowing for the past 4 or 5 years. I love it! I have been able to grow most of my own perennial flowers and fill most of my beds full for very cheap. I just pick one area to work on at a time.

Do you sow them directly in the ground?
@@cappar7567 no I do just as she is doing with the milk jugs, then I transfer them to the ground once all danger of frost has passed. I do direct sow some seeds but mostly do the milk jug winter sowing method.
It sure saves a lot and this year those plants in catalogs seem really pricey.
I just started winter sowing last year. Have you done onions? I’m Z5a and not sure they would get big enough. Anything to keep the mess and babysitting seedlings outside is a win for me. Thanks!

it's the middle of January in NC we have hundreds of Daffodils EVERYWHERE it's going to look amazing at REAP WHAT YOU SOW GARDENING

I wintersow every year, I put a coffee filter in the jug before I add my soil, this helps keep the soil from falling out the bottom. I also put my plastic plant tag inside the jug and then also label the outside of the jug.
My plants are currently nestled in my bearded Iris bed that has a a picket edging fence around it, literally tucked in.

I've done this with great success in 72 cell seed trays. Plant them, water them in and stack the trays up outside in a somewhat protected area where they still get rain. I'll put an open flat or a piece of hardware cloth over the top tray. No need to thin or separate, Just unstack as soon as there's any germination and plant in the garden as soon as they are big enough. Native milkweed does great this way. This year I'm experimenting with hosta and paw paw seed. We'll see how that goes.🙂

I forgot I wanted to try winter sowing this year! Thanks for the reminder! I'm in MN and I'm going to winter sow a bunch of my onion seed, snapdragons, artichokes and probably some other things. Every year I kill my artichokes in the process of giving them the chill hours they need hahaha
😳I have never heard of winter sowing. Just found myself scouring house and recycle bin for appropriate containers. Grabbed my snapdragon, marigold and lisianthus seeds and now have 8 containers of various sizes sitting outside. 🤞🏻. Will try pumpkins and tomatoes in April.

When I seen them tire marks I immediately thought wow that's a great idea to plant!!
I had 100% germination on my delphinium seeds last yr, I soaked a paper towel sprinkled the seeds on the wet paper towel and they were in a Rochelle chocolates plastic clear case that the chocolates came in, put the case in a drawer where it's completely dark! I would check on them spray them with water like a mist, I put them in my bathroom next to the heater and let it get hot and put back into the vanity drawer of mine!!! They looked like bean sprouts lol. 😊

So glad you did this video today...I've been saving my containers and was going to search out videos on doing this process. AND since I've had NO luck growing poppies the last couple years, this is definitely worth a shot
Works like a charm, just transplant in chunks as they are fragile and not during heat of day. Keep them moist and they will flourish. Planted out while still cool and they reseeded and I just looked and there are all kinds of bright green plants under snow just waiting to return. So excited as I got some purple to go with those reds this year.

And here I am getting ready to start my warm season flowers in 9a..we’ve had a very warm winter this year and I’m scared I’m missing out on our rare spring, either way time to start zinnias, cosmos and dahlia seeds! I started tomatoes and peppers already..only time of year I like living in southern Texas 😂
We have had the warmest January in WI! It rained like crazy Monday and snowing Wednesday night. I’ve never seen it my whole life-Crazy. We will hopefully get cold now heading to February.
I’m concerned spring bulbs and other plants will break dormancy. Another reason I didn’t start winter sowing yet.
This is my 2nd year WSowing and I’m trying dahlias for first time ever and from seed. I hope they work winter sowing them.
@@dustyflats3832 some of my plants died back with the freeze we got a few weeks ago but they’re already coming back since we’ve been in the high 70s-mid 80s. I doubt we’ll have another hard freeze here. I’m trying dahlias from seed for the first time too! Although I don’t do winter sowing here in Texas, it’s definitely going to be a fun experience

I LOVE tractors!!! The best investment we made after we bought out small farm! My husband loves it and I love it when he can use it for a project for me!
Ooh hole for the tulips the auger couldn’t dig! Winter sowing is the only way I can grow larkspur. I tried for years to start larkspur. Last year and I tried them with the winter sowing method. The hardest part of winter sowing is remembering to plant them out in the spring. I use a drill to make holes in the bottom.

I started watching your channel about 6 months ago and was hooked. Because I started out working at landscape business in my late 40s. We have so much in common. Like you I did a lot by trial and error. Now I'm 64 and retired but still gardening. I got my first green house 3yrs ago and it's been wonderful to be able to grow more plants. I love your channel and I'm still learning new things from you. Thank you for all your help. Never to old to learn.

I did winter sewing last year 2022 and one of the plants I 15:38 grew was the artichoke 3 made it to the garden and did really really well until they were covered in black aphids 😡I watch and checked everything in the garden faithfully and then one day !!!! I did everything I could to get rid of them and no matter how diligent I was or what I used things just kept getting worse on those 3 artichokes!!! So remembering Laura talking about “aphid attracter plants” I stopped treating them and never saw even one aphid on any other plant in my gardens🙀🙀🙀🙀👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😂😂

I really like the mix if planting that you do. Your features on seeds, like this, show how economical planting can be. Also, the varieties of plants available by seed far exceed availability in garden centers . While I struggle with seed success, I always learn something from your seed starting videos. Keep them coming!

To water my winter sowing jugs I put some water (just an inch or two) in a tub or long flat container and then place the jugs in the water. This allows them to be bottom watered (as long as you’ve added the drainage holes) and won’t disturb the seedlings.
So you keep water in it at all times?
@@Tracymw99 no, I’ll only water them only as needed. We have a pretty rainy spring so I didn’t need to do it often. It just made it a lot easier to water them all at once. After they soaked up all the water they needed I took them out of the container.

Don’t forget to use a paint marker! Permanent marker may fade or disappear. 🤨
It's a marker made specifically for plant labels! I got one last year and it worked really well!

I have 2 garden sacks full of milk cartons ready for winter sowing but we are way below 0degrees c still with us in Wales, UK so hopefully another week or two and It will warm up!

I was amazed on how the plants did in winter sewing. Such fun to “peek” at the process. I planted some but I think I need to check my seeds to plant more. Western Pa so it will be months before I play in the dirt otherwise!! Your video’s got me through Covid thank you.
If you remember, can you please do a video when these are ready to come out of the jugs? Seems like all of the videos are how to start but not once they are ready to transplant. ❤

I love watching your videos…a little jealous that you are starting some seeds already. Early to mid April is indoor greenhouse starting here so the plant are strong by end of may to harden off outside. If my cats had access to your plants…they would all be mowed down, they eat everything!
Laura, It is so inspiring to see you getting head starts on plantings. I think the time at Andrews and forecasting the next years seasonal needs was a good base for you planning today.
