Whenever our society develops into one direction, there is almost certainly an opposing trend. In the midst of the „age of Instagram“, many photographers are rediscovering the unique feeling associated with shooting on film.
Opposing today’s search for instant gratification and the increased speed of life, analog photography encourages photographers to take their time. From putting a roll of film in the camera through to seeing the final images for the first time; the analog photographer embarks on an experiential journey. Equipped with his Leica M6, New York based photographer Joe Greer took a trip to a lost place in order to find out what he loves most about shooting on film.
„I‘m a life photographer.“
Joe’s photographic work does not fit in a box. Always carrying his Leica M6, he wants to be ready and able to take a photograph in any situation life brings to him.
„My Leica M6 made me slow down.“
Being a competitive athlete for most of his youth, analog photography encouraged Joe to take his time. It taught him how to see life in a more simple and balanced way.
„Honesty is what I‘m looking for.“
A major topic for Joe is emotion. Whenever he takes photographs, he tries to capture the honesty of a situation in order to show its true colors to the viewer.
„Film is packed with small imperfections, just like life.“
Due to the chemical nature of film, analog has a different look than digital. Joe sees these small imperfections as an important part of the journey, adding to the beauty of his images.
„Analog photography has something that digital cannot provide.“
Compared to digital, analog photography offers a more tangible, direct experience. Joe understands its rise, specifically with younger people, as a logical consequence of our digital lifestyle.
„Follow your passion and beautiful things will happen.“
Joe encourages photographers to experiment by trying out different genres, shooting locations as well as film stock. Breaking a photographic routine always leads to a new perspective.

A few years ago, I falling in love with film and analog photography. Same as Joe here, I learned to slow down, chasing down a decisive moment with my film camera. Now, I exclusively use digital; the cost of shooting and processing film is becoming really expensive for me. But the habit of only chasing down a decisive moment still there. I even always post-processing my digital photos with film emulation/preset. Watching this video makes me realize, maybe I will go back shooting film at vacation or other special moment. Thank you Leica and Joe Greer for a beautiful video.

I started out shooting film for years and even had my own darkroom. Now the passion is the same as you; photographing new places where the images are just waiting for you. Digital photography for me is like film for you, and I enjoy making photographs with it. It's physical, creative, immediate, and just as powerful when you find the subject, reportage, and composition. I have found my passion tripled now with the capabilities of the Q2.

Joe makes me fall in love with photography more every day, such an amazing guy
Romanticising film photography and portraying it as the ultimate purest form of photography is to me really silly. I used to love film and the aesthetics of it all, and I still do, but the older I get the more I feel like I have moved on. When I first started shooting digital I started adding film grain, trying to make it look like film. And one day I asked myself, why am I doing this? I don't ride around in a horse and carriage, I use a car. I don't have to walk over to my friends to say hello, I send a text or make a call. Am I holding on to a medium that is more fragile, more expensive, more flawed, because that makes me a more "legit" photographer? Is a 35MM picture more art than a digital picture? Ive now gone fully digital and if you knew me 10 years ago you would think I had gone insane. Not only have I gone fully digital, but I will never ever go back. It feels like looking back at a relationship with someone I once loved, but is so over now it's difficult to understand why it took me so long to end it.
Film will eventually die and I mean completely die. It's not at all environmental friendly and before film becomes even more expensive and more niche, the chemicals used to process film will be forbidden. And we are not talking that far into the future, folks. So every photographer, not matter how purist, will have to move over to digital. And film grain for example will just be confusing and distracting to future generations who have no attachment to film and how it looks. Film grain is not part of life, its just a character of that particular medium that once was the standard, that's it.
Am I being too harsh? If I read this comment 5-10 years ago I would have thought the person who wrote it was an (insert any insulting word). But this is honestly how I feel now. And I would like to hear from other folks how they feel.
Finally, someone who understands the perfection of imperfection.
Something different from Leica, and inspiring.
I really do not understand the photography worlds obsession with this guy. Can’t knock his passion but he seems to want to be a celebrity/influencer rather than a photographer, producing original or interesting work. His work is just an attempt to imitate the aesthetic alone of work by American photographers like shore and meyerowitz, without adding anything of his own voice. He embodies this aesthetic choice in his own personal style also, which is fine, but when it is presented to the audience on an equal footing with the work itself it really says it all.
Far better photographers out their who put their own original work front and centre before everything, without the vapid self-aggrandising and boring overplayed film photography ‘philosophy’.
If meyerowitz had YT back in the day he would probably receive a similar comment. I'm more interested in where his work stand +20/30 yrs from now.

When Joe says "slow down, take your time." I felt that.
I click with digital, I don't go bezerk on things. I used to use 35mm before, till 2006. Then I stopped for a while, started digital in 2011. I'm still apsc with my Fuji.
I still don't use the screen, I don't burst either. Some do ask me, then what's the point.
I tell them, that's the beauty of it.

I cant believe I can say this, but Ive been shooting film for 30 years now. I remember when I saw the first digital camera at the local store. I think it had 600kbs. They had a print out of a picture. It was horrible. I thought then and there I would never shoot digital. I bought my first digital camera last year. A Fuji xt3. Beautiful camera. But its not the same as film. I love my M6 and F6. And nothing beats MF and LF for technical fun and results. Film fan boy forever. I still cant believe its 30 years. Im 43. Hopefully I get another 30 more to shoot and have fun.

Bought a leica m2. A camera more than twice as old as me. I shoot mostly black and white, something which is rarely seen. I never shot digital, learned the basics and to shoot without lightmeter. All thanks to the wonderful community of film photography. I truly love this community and great to see Leica acknowledging that and its own history. A digital leica is not something I can afford but if I ever win a lottery I would definitely go for that black M-A. To shoot film forevermore.

Ahhh leica M2 team ❤️. That camera is so good (well apart from the rewinding knob 🤣). I prefer the weight and sturdiness of it over the new leicas.
I had a M6 a decade ago and then a M240. Using those cameras has something special and sensual. And that's why it's a heady experience. But honestly, nothing to do with inspiration. Picasso wasn't inspired by his brushes. Similarly a great photographer is inspired by the world around him, not by his gear. You can slow down with a M6+lux28 or a M10 or a GRIII or even a X100V and its 23mm, and you'll catch awesome pictures if you have "this deep sens of balance". I know it's not the story Leica likes to share with enthusiasts, but it's an evidence.

I love my cameras, so I always carry one with me, and it's always a joy to go out to take pictures. It wouldn't be the same if I only had shit gear.
In a way, they inspire me.
the m6 that and the m3, but same era nikon f, f2 and f3 where also epic. Its all about the glass.. leitz,zeiss, nikon.leitz basically balances and blue prints glass, elements and groups. Its all in the glass folks.

Jason Decker I’d like a Leica and a nice Bonneville. Always been a Nikon man. Last few years I’ve been using Fujifilm and am very happy. I like Triumph motorcycles but don’t have one. I just dislike their advertising... It is at the same douche-level as this clip. Ride an MT-10 SP now. It’s ugly but a whole lot of fun!

We need more features of photographers like this. I have liked the recent addition of Joe as well as the addition of Allan that you used for the monochrom. Too many times I’ve seen influencers or just really average photographers talking selling points to push this brand. It makes Leica look like a luxury brand than a premium brand. Let’s keep it going in this direction, it’s healthy for the brand.

ahh kodachrome 25 profesional on my m6 from the early 80s , projectected on a pradovit, ya those where the days .. leica damm from a 1a to a focomat 2c, its the optics and mechanical tolerences.. what do i do with my visoflex

As a photographer who started on film back in the 1980s, I find myself coming full circle. I shoot digital for my inspection work, and maybe some night shooting. However, my fine-art photography is film. So this is from someone who's shot for a very long time.
I too love the randomness of film - be it roll or Instant. Digital is striving for a perfection that creates a mundane image in spite of HDR and the latest software gimmicks. Even if you shoot with an autofocus film camera, you still have to slow down and think since your available images are few.

Bravo Joe!!! Seldom has such a work touched me internally and I had the impression of understanding your inner art feelings as a passing breeze.
The film is pleasant to watch. What is said about taking the time is interesting but I found Joe's photos pretty average. One could really do better with an M6!
That's like saying one could really do better than Messi with a pair of his Adidas football boots after he has a bad game 😂
@@retrospective77 Of all the new generation of film kids, I actually really like Joe's work. He might be the only one whose photographs are more interesting than yt vids about drinking coffee while holding rangefinders (some of which are very enjoyable) but to compare him to Messi?? No.

Beautiful - really succinct and meaningful expression; the sound track was beautifully done.
Digital = Virtual. It is not real, can not be touched nor can it be felt. It really does not exist but in a caravan of zeros and ones. I rather touch an LP, look at its cover art, feel the vinyl rather than a zillions of MP3 and MP4 files. I don't care how much ' sharper ' they look or sound. Thanks for a lovely presentation.
@@c0ldc0ne That's just the physical storage device. Can you open them up and look at your photos like you do with a book or an album or you need to stick them in a computer to make sense of the zeros and ones? All answers on a postcard please.

I can't afford shooting on image, because a roll of 135/36 costs USD 20 plus processing here in Denmark. I could do the darkroom job myself - have done it for more than 30 years, but digital is much cleaner, environment friendly and a bit faster. So I'll stick to my M-P240 and Q. But I respect photographers like Joe Greer.

I know for a fact that Joe Greer shoots a lot of digital as well. But he was talking about what he likes about film photography here, not saying he hates or refuses to shoot digital.
