The original Sports SUV is back with a new look and more power in the facelift! It’s also the one car in the Porsche line up that we hadn’t reviewed in RBR up until now, so a quick look at the history is in order!
if you’ve seen my Cayenne coupe video, you’ll recall the story of how the saved from near collapse, with sales figures eclipsing 911, becoming the car known as the “SUV that can tow an entire carmaker." This was back in 1992 when Porsche was struggling in debt, with new CEO Wendelin Wiedeking axing models like 928, revamping the production methods to promote part sharing, and also brought in the baby 911, aka Boxster. Another car with big margins, sales and profits.
The next plan, was genius. Take the formula of the Boxster: a smaller cheaper arguably more dynamic car. Mix it with the practicality yearned for by customers in the Cayenne: and boom. The baby Porsche SUV was born!!
Now that development project was originally known as the Cajun, as in Cayenne Junior. This was then renamed later to Macan, which famously means tiger. It was the first SUV to drive like a hatchback or Spart sedan, and since has given rise to a huge number of rivals. In 2018, the Macan outsold the 911, Cayman and Boxster combined!
In this facelift, gone is the old 3.6-litre turbocharged V6, and in its place a new 2.9-litre twin-turbo unit sits. Well, relatively new at least - we’ve already seen the sub-3-litre hot-vee unit (with both turbos nestled between the cylinder heads) - Same engine we have seen in the RS5. Still this gives 39bhp more than the old Macan Turbo, and a 0-62mph time of 4.3sec should Sport Chrono be optioned.
The new Macan gets standard fitment of Porsche Surface Coated Brakes, which feature a tungsten carbide coating on the cast-iron discs that Porsche says reduces wear, increases friction, yet reduces brake dust by 90 per cent. PASM adaptive dampers are standard, regular steel-sprung suspension - while options include air suspension.

Just bought my 2014 macan s with only 50k on the clock and absolutely love it. Best car i have ever owned. My last ride was the gla 45amg and it does not really feel much slower. Its in my opinion such a solid feeling car.
I tested it and decided to go for V8 from MB. Sound is annoying, interior is basic plastic. More reliable than MB but not as luxurious or powerful.
Why this blend between car review and 3d graphics? It's kind of awesome.

Used to not like Porsche a lot, but as I've gotten a bit more open-minded this past couple of years I've really gotten to like them. They are sporty yet classy. Powerful and fast yet deep and powerful sounding and not screaming. The luxury car for lifestyle people.

How does it compare to your pre-facelift Macan turbo?
It might be indeed more refined inside, but the cabin noise on your video didn't sell it that way to be honest.
actually the cabin noise made it almost impossible to hear your review
I think he might have blended the mic that was outside near the exhaust with the sound from in the cabin so that we could hear the engine noise and not just him talking. Personally, I liked it.
edit: He commented saying his main mic failed, so he used the mic from the camera

What’s a better driving or overall better buy the 2020 Porsche macan Gts or 2020 Mercedes glc 43 Amg coupe
Drove by a Macan the other day that was getting off the highway - plenty of pops and bangs were heard. As another commenter mentioned, UK might have some emission requirements that subdue the exhaust note.

Personally i think it is a better size car as i spend 99% of the time by myself and have no kids , just a wife to join me on some of our trips away.
Currently driving gla 45amg, love its drive but feel its time to get into a bigger car just because of all the bad roads here in queensland Australia wehere i live.

Maybe.... I recently took delivery of my GLC 43 Coupe and it does live up to the RBR Review....returning a 2018 Macan. Without a doubt the Macan does have exceptional steering and ride stability, but it's in the last year of Porsche's 7 year design cycle. The Porsche mystic / prestige with necessary option can be at a 25% premium. I also drove the X4 Comp.... I wouldn't take your eye off the MB/BMW maxed out on options and only in the 2nd year of redesigns.

Seems the UK version has a muted exhaust note, my guess is due to an emission requirement . With sport exhaust on, my 2021 Macan Turbo sounds incredible. One of the loudest and best sounding V6s I’ve heard. I’m in the US
So a Turbo with Sports exhaust option and air suspension plus coated brakes...then spend time in the options boxes. Yep...one of those I think!!😎😎😎😎
Anyone have suggestions for a quality tune for this car? Mine is on order for a March delivery and would love to get turbo like horsepower out of the GTS.

Got to ride in a friend's Macan... Great ride...I'd pick Porsche over any other brand everytime... Unless I wanted a lux cruiser then a Bentley Conti Convertable.

The previous generation Macan had an amazing sound compared to the new one. I think that's in part due to the OPF and also the smaller engine size.
I think the OPF is ruining everything coming out of Europe these days.

That steering wheel is actually of the 991 generation btw. Not found in 992
they say that the 2.0 248hp Macan version corners better than the more powerful versions due to the lighter smaller engine
Drove my first Porsche recently which was a Macan but the base model of this new generation.
Damn I love how the Turbo sounds. The doctor (they work with at clinic) who let me drive it for a few minutes said it didn't count as my first Porsche though lol 🤣 . He owns a 991.2 GT3.

The OPF filters are making every euro car so much less exciting. I used to have a 2016 Turbo S and that thing was easily twice as loud as what I heard in that video. Shame really.

Will Jolliff can’t get much more out of it. Hybrids are heavy as hell. I doubt that the new GT73S will break the record Porsche is holding right now, and believe me Porsche rules track focussed, handling and fast cars.

glc may be faster in 0-60 and top speed, but the driving experience can't touch the macan

That’s what the VAG group is buddy. All owned by VW and they just parts share eg Bentayga, Urus, q7/8, toureg etc. So many parts shared

Maybe the turbo is good in some areas. But underpower is the biggest weakness for performance cars. Its straight line time is slower than GLC63S by around 0.5s in multiple tests and 0.6-0.7 seconds slower than X3/4M. That's unacceptable.

I’m selling my 997.1 Turbo for a Macan Turbo. I hate the sound of this 2020 which is certainly in my price point. I think I’ll opt for a 2019 Turbo with low miles. The old Macan Turbo had a much sweeter throaty sound and that is half of the experience with any Porsche, even with 40 less HP. What a shame that they had to go this route. Unless they come up with some special editions Macan R or the like with larger engines then the 2019 Turbo and the GTS could go down as the last great Macans.

I have owned a Macan S for three years. Pretty disappointed at how the interior has aged - lots of creaking and vibration noise. I wonder if the quality bar is lower than for the 911 as it’s a volume vehicle.

Well, saying the Macan Turbo has its own niche of the market, seems like a friendly Porsche way of putting it.
The raw truth is that the Macan Turbo doesn't get enough power from its V6 to go against its top competitors in terms of power.

That is so true! The Stelvio Quadrifoglio and X3M both have 70 horsepower more with six cylinder engines, and the GLC63 has a V8... Porsche have been pretty sloppy with this lineups powertrain
