Hey friends, this was an EMOTIONAL one. I just kinda sat after editing because wow, it was wild. I'm looking forward to Tuesday when we check out Guns and Ships > History Has It's Eyes on You > Yorktown. Ya'll said that will be nuts! Remember to subscribe if you're new and thanks for coming by!!
Yes, Eliza is, I believe, the one major character in the show who never really raps, or sings fast. She takes her time. That is an intentional character point, on Lin's part.
I really love that and that's like, just the attention to detail is so out of this world. I've heard tons of musicals before this, but this is just on a completely different level.
I really like Lin. He isn't the most amazing singer in the world, but he conveys so much emotion in his voice and bodyanguage that he sucks you into the role to the extreme
But there’s something to that imperfection. Kinda like being able to see brush strokes in a masterpiece, ya know? His voice breaks which means more than if it was flawless
I agree with both of you! He’s great for character singing, not to mention he’s so talented with basically every other aspect of music that it doesn’t matter. He’s talented *enough* and he loves what he does, *that would be enough* for anyone
I once saw an interview with Lin where he talked about his vocal abilities. He compared his singing voice to a beat-up old Chevy and said his voice may not be “pretty or smooth but I can get you where you need to go” 🤣🤣
He's honestly a pretty great actor i was so surprised with his acting performance in His Dark Materials. There's this one scene in that show where he REALLY shines and ugh it's so good. He made me cry twice
Please keep "That would be enough" in the back of your mind through the show, because that is a SERIOUS leitmotif in this show. Absolutely amazing how many of those there are in Hamilton, but "That would be enough" is without a doubt my favourite with how it's used.
Oh yeah I 100% see that. Satisfied seems to have huge themes coming back throughout, like that idea of being enough or being satisfied... It's just a wild theme I never expected to see in this when I started.
I feel like a big part of the reason learning he's gonna be having a son is so hard on Alex emotionally is because as Eliza says he'd keep fighting until the war is done, "or you die" is left unsaid, but it's pretty easy to fill in that blank. Everyone he ever loved has left him for in some way for one reason or another. He basically grew up fatherless, and in this song he was confronted with the possibility that for his own ambition he'd have run the risk of subjecting his own son to the same fate.
It's the same thing I mentioned with him and Washington but in a different way. Like, he doesn't like Washington calling him "son" - but he also doesn't seem to like the idea of being a dad either.
The reason this resonates so emotionally is even more real than you know- Lin wrote this as a love letter to his wife Vanessa as she was pregnant with their first child at the same time that Hamilton was being written. It just came out in Eliza's voice.
Phillipa Soo is amazing. I urge anyone to listen to the Song "Ultraluminary" from the Movie "Over the Moon". She shows pretty much her entire Range in that song
Alright, lemme geek out over Hamilton and the songs. A lot of these lyrics come back in other songs. Like the "Look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now" is first introduced in The Schuyler Sisters. And I'm telling you (no spoilers ofc) that a ton of lyrics in this song also are in other songs too. It's gonna get wild on Tuesday.
I've been trying SO hard to find all of the song references when they come up but so many of them are woven together that I keep missing them when they come back
This song is so masterfully done on its own but also has so much foreshadowing and leitmotifs in the second act. The more you rewatch Hamilton the more this song gets you in the feels.
Re: Hamilton’s seemingly mixed emotions regarding the baby. He knows what’s it’s like to be raised with nothing, and even though Eliza comes from money, Hamilton knows that HE can’t provide for a family. As you said, seems like terrible timing.
True and especially back then I feel like there was a stigma on her dad having to pay for things instead of you being the “man of the house” kinda thing.
I never noticed before, but even though it is an extremely softer version, she and Mrs. Reynolds enunciate "Staaaay!" the very same way and with the same emphasis. I'm often astounded by what an ourobouros this play is, always twisting and turning over itself in the most unexpected ways!
I love how versatile the lines are in this show! "Look around at how lucky we are to be alive RIGHT NOW" (at this exciting time in history) from the Schuyler Sisters is slowed way down and now it's "Look around at how lucky we are to be ALIVE (as opposed to dead) right now." Genius!
thank youuu for pointing out how amazing Eliza is. i feel like she is really underrated. people akwyas say how Eliza is a crybaby and Angelica is so strong and stuff and her sacrifice was so sad. but she litrally listed why marrying Alex would not be good and then just let's Eliza deal with that!? i love Angelica but she would have never been able to support and love Hamilton this much through everything and she would have never forgived him later on for all that happened. Eliza is so emotionally intelligent and strong it's hard to recognize these traits in people glad to see you appreciate her.
I'm so happy you chose to react to this one by itself. It's truly enough for a video and it's also such a special, vulnerable moment for Alexander and Eliza's story that it really deserves its own spotlight. I'm with you in loving Lin's voice, it just makes you feel SO much. I really love how much emotion he can put into it, which paired with his fantastic acting just knows you off completely. And what to say about Philippa, she's an absolute angel with a voice to match. The next three songs are WILD and I just can't wait to see your reactions. Your head is going to be blown 🤭
If you like Phillipa Soo's voice, she was in another movie recently called *Over the Moon*. It's a kid's movie, which I don't say as an insult! Just as a heads up so you don't expect Hamilton 2, but she's lovely in it. :D Ultraluminary is bonkers in the best way possible imo, and so catchy. :D
Yorktown is in Virginia, on the Chesapeake. Also, while That Would Be Enough is lovely, the reason everyone said to listen to it alone is because the next 3 really do go together. I guess That Would Be Enough could have been grouped with them...but it's more the proverbial calm before the storm. Or maybe That Would Be Enough could have gone with the last set? But you had already listened to and posted them. So enjoy this sweet little moment between the Hamiltons. Tuck it away to think back on during the hard times ahead!
The fact this series still hasn’t been claimed yet makes me think someone at Disney was told about this, watched the videos and went “Nah, I’ll give this guy a pass, it’s a really good reaction.”
Lin rewrote parts of the character of Eliza based on Philipa Soo’s character and the incredible quiet strength she brings. I’ve sees touring productions, and honestly Eliza is the only portrayal I’ve been a little disappointed in. It’s just such a hard character to make realistic and not whiny. I also love seeing and hearing Lin’s emotion here… very different from the cast album.
this is one of my absolute favorite songs from the entire show. i made a point to stay away from the soundtrack before i saw the show for the first time so i could experience it organically, and this song (and obviously "satisfied") were both so well done. it still gives me chills when i listen to it or watch the show, especially when eliza sings "i relish being YOUR wife." so good. ❤️
I would advise adding What Comes Next onto the next video because it's short and it fits better with the first 3 than with Dear Theodosia which comes right after it
My favorite thing about this reaction is knowing that this is that Phillipa Soo has, IMO, a song later that is far better at showing off her tremendous skills.
I really appreciate how much you discuss Lin's acting choices -- honestly it helps me see a lot more (I tend to be more occupied with the music, I guess)
When you watch this, it is important to remember that when all this is taking place, they are still living under the British caste system. Hamilton was born to lower class parents. As such, he was likely to spend his entire life stuck at that social level. The one opportunity he had was military service. At the time, it was one of the few opportunities for someone to rise to a higher social level. But that required him to get an opportunity to command some troops. This is why he seems so anxious for the revolution to happen. He wants to prove himself as a military leader so that he can rise to a higher social rank. At this moment in the play, he has come SO CLOSE to getting that opportunity only for Washington to send him home. It would be like an Olympic athlete who trained for their entire life, got to the Olympic Games only to be benched through no fault of their own. It's understandable that he is absolutely gutted at this moment.
"Do you relish being a poor man's wife, unable to provide for your life?" "I relish being *Your* wife." What a line that hits a personal mark for me. It's hard to convey that sense of wanting to ease the burden on the one you love, that they don't have to be everything, do everything to keep you happy.
This song and the way it stops the whole production shows why Alex needed Eliza and why she’s the perfect wife for him. While Alex and Angelica might be twin flames, they both stoke that fire, and she would have encouraged him to fight and wanted it as much as he did, but Eliza constantly shows Alex a different perspective. She tells him you don’t have to be or do anything for people to love you, because I love you and Alex just doesn’t get it. I like to think this song is such a switch in tone and beat because most of the other songs are from Hamilton’s perspective of non-stop go, go, go and here Eliza finally stops him and makes him look around at all the good. Gosh I just love her so much!
SC has SO SO SO much beautiful (and sad) history to explore. Im a SC girl born and raised and know a fair bit if you ever have questions, you wanna ask.
"I knew you'd fight till the war was won" - Eliza "wars not done" - Hamilton "But you deserve the chance to meet your son" - Eliza then me aggressively saying "SONS NOT DONE!"
4:00 I feel called out. People in my life have probably learned that trying to compliment me is pointless. It's like that scene from The Matrix and dodging those bullets. I debunk any compliment I receive. They just aren't accurate or based in facts, and if it is a factual thing, it's never something I can be credited for. Calling me resilient for having 91 surgeries and almost dying four times is not honest. I had no choice in surviving, the doctors are the ones that deserve credit or blame. My poor mom was there to witness all of the stuff I have been through so far, and I did not make it easy for her to function the most recent time I almost died. I was septic and the doctors decided that putting me into a medically-induced coma was necessary and right before the propofol kicked in, I looked at my mom and said, "This time, I'm going to die." THEN I WENT COMATOSE FOR 10 DAYS. I feel bad for that being the last thing she heard me say for 10 days, but I stand by it. I should not have survived. The days after the coma were even worse. Sepsis can really screw with your brain. I had hallucinations that I still have flashbacks of, and this was November 2017, shortly after that Las Vegas sniper mass shooting. I was fully convinced that I was in a hotel before and it was the night before the surgery that had the complication that lead to this situation, and my delusion was that a sniper was aiming at the window. That's the one thing that I'm not too traumatized to discuss without having flashbacks. I deal with my trauma (avoid is probably a more honest term) with morbid humor. I now don't have to wonder what hallucenogenic drugs cause you to experience.
