Yo, Redwall was my everything as a kid. I loved Mariel of Redwall, and Loamhedge was such a fun(but sad) story too. I wish someone could do a proper movie based on on the books(Mossflower would be a good place to start).

Whoa thanks so much for letting me know! I used to love both of these series as a kids and I'll have to check it out! Now I just need people to play with haha
Brian Jacques came from the same part of England as me, but I didn't find out until just after he died. Proud that such a great series came from a writer from our region.
I'm currently reading the second book. The new German prints are amazingly well done. So far the story had been great! Thanks for the great mini documentary about the series and the creator!
props to you my guy, it's great to see someone that doesn't call Brian Jacques a "racist" because he has set good and bad characters. Also, a very good video for sub-100 subscriber, I was very impressed. you earned my sub!
Yeah I liked the emphasis that the simplicity of it all is to really drive home the core messaging to children. All this talk is reminding me of a bugs life as another example of setting fixed bad guys, in the movie it made sense for both simplicity and storyline consistency.
The first book I ever read was Pearls of Lutra. I dont really remember what happens in any of the Redwall books because I was so young but I remember loving them. I remember loving The Taggerung and Salamanderstron also.
I read a ton of the books in middle school in the 90s, and loved the aesthetics and vibe and everything, but I don't remember much from the stories other than the characters always biting their lip until it bled.
I'd never heard of Redwall until the entire first season in one video popped up on my youtube feed. I binge watched all 3 seasons (on TH-cam) last weekend. Very nice series, beautiful artwork.
Currently organizing my office, as I move my Redwall collection around I wonder to myself 'What's happened to Redwall since Brian Jacques passed?' and you answered that question tenfold. Cheers man, I appreciate the video and information
let´s remember that Nimona was also a dead product with no hope of ever being released and it was a modest sucess, so there´s always hope for at least a TV series
I love this series and was heartbroken when I heard the creator passed away, I've actually had to rebuy a copy or two of some of the books because I've red them to the point the spine is about to split. My personal favorite character is Gonff the Mouse Thief because he's such a jolly fellow. I'd say it's my first "low fantasy" series I've ever read....there isn't much magic past some talk of reincarnation, the badger lord's prophetic visions, and of course the mysticism of a sword forged in a volcano forge and made of meteorite that fell from space. The fact that the animals are all about the normal size and there are HINTS that there might be humans who live in the world is interesting but the focus on the animals makes the story what it is. As a whole my favorite animals in the series have to be the good, stout and friendly moles, always good for a chuckle but always good to have at your back in a pinch. I actually own the official cookbook even though it's rather thin, the illustrations help bring the idea of what they all look like into clearer focus.
"You Don't buy literally an entire series to just sit on it" Oh sweet summer child I envy your optimism Still fingers crossed to this day for a TV series or movie, just something. Till then still got me books
This was an amazing video doc, was really surprised to find it was only your 2nd video! Definitely subscribing, can’t wait to see what else you put out!
I loved the opening with his pronunciation of his name- my sister got to have her copy of Redwall (and therefore mine once it was handed down) signed when she was little and my mom always lectured us on the proper pronunciation of his name because he was very adamant and specific about it at the signing 😂😂 Side note- I am a DnD DM, and I have been trying to decide the setting of my next tabletop game, so I put together all my ideas into a survey I gave to my players. I found your channel because I clicked on a video about Dinotopia- BECAUSE THAT WAS ONE OF THE IDEAS I PUT IN MY SURVEY. Then underneath it recommended this video about Redwall, ANOTHER IDEA I PUT IN MY SURVEY 😂😂😂 I’m now expecting to find a video about The Outpost, The Last Airbender, or one of the other very specific IPs I put into my survey as potential DnD games 😂😂😂😂
He seemed like a genuinely amazing guy but he did get touchy about his name, which is fair haha. Sounds like an amazing DnD game, count me in if you ever need more players haha. And thanks for the suggestion about The Outpost, The Last Airbender, it's on the list!
And may I also recommend Larry MacDougall's Gwelf books? They are clearly in the Redwall genre and beautifully done and written. Thanks for a nice overview. You've inspired me to check out more of the novels in the coming year.
I enjoyed the first book and did plan to read the rest despite its repetitiveness. It's so cool this series still delights readers today. It's a shame that most Xenoficition stories never seem to get off the ground, adaptation wise. It's sad its not super well known. Honestly, the same can be said for many other xenofiction books like the Duncton Wood series, Watership Down and Warrior cats. It's such an underrated subgenre of fantasy.
Was painting skaven, it brought me here. i remember meeting brian as a kid and having a book signed. Those were all lost in a basement flood. Would it be odd at 33 to track down all these books and read em again lol.
Netflix buying anything makes me nervous. They're great at taking things with great potential and even amazing starts to the series and then just completely scrapping or canceling them. It's extremely frustrating and never fails to disappoint me, though it's no longer surprising when it happens now. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm enjoying my rewatch of the story now and reliving a bit of childhood, so at least we still have the old series!
Hopefully. If Netflix doesn't do anything with it they will let the rights lapse and somebody else will hopefully a studio with a recall fan at the helm
I love this series so much. I got into it because of school, I read one of the books for a book report, and have since then read the series through like ten times.
I discovered these books at my local public library and tried to get my hands on every one that my local library had. Coincidentally this was around the time that Brian passed so that was pretty sad but we will always have his wonderful stories.
I hope the Jacques Estate doesn't farm out the series. It won't be the same. That said, I'd totally be open to seeing another TV adaptation or film series.
Awesome video. I'm a big fan of Redwall and hope it can continue in some way. Not sure what that would be like without Jacques but we can all hope that whatever happens would make him proud.
I am so glad I grew up listening to the dramatized audiobooks on CD from the library. The stories are incredible, I just read through all of them again at age 24, and they’re still just as amazing as ever. I can’t wait to read them aloud to my future children.
One thing I found years ago to satisfy the Redwall itch was the series Mouseguard. While a bit more geared towards an older audience, I would recommend Mouseguard to anyone that grew up reading Redwall.
I have Read All The Red Wall Books, They are in a different world of most books, which makes it so much more. I am now starting over with the HOLE SET! I would love more on the Red Wall series, I am stuck within that world and enjoy his work! He was an amazing man!
Okay come on, Netflix, give us a Redwall adaptation with the animation style of The Bad Guys! I would watch the heck out of that, especially if they did Mossflower and High Rhulain. Something about a rebellion against tyranny, I love it every time.
I absolutely adored this series as a kid, and still do to this day. I was so exited to hear that Patrick McHale was working on Redwall because Over the Garden Wall was amazing, but alas. Really hope they still do something with the franchise, it has so much potential.
When I was a kid I remember I read the Outcast of Redwall, pretty sure it made me cry. The “vermin” wasn’t a full villain in that one, I think that was as close as Jacques came to making one of them a grey character. I loved the animated series, it was fantastic, grim, epic and treated kids maturely.
Even at my age I still have a love for Brian Jacques work. His novels are timeless and will forever hold a special place in my heart. Rip you amazing, dear, soul.
Man I loved the cartoon as a kid and used to VHS record too! Lol I’d love for a continuation of the cartoon but the way new products come out now … idk if it would capture the same spirit
I loved these books so much as a kid, they were still coming out when i was reading them. They definitely shaped the landscape of my imagination, and the badger lords were always my favorites, and of them I loved Urthwhyte the most. I just wish foxes hadn't been bad guys in that world. 😅
I love Redwall! Fond memories of watching the TV show. In the board game space is there’s a game called Root, that has anthropomorphic animals in a medieval setting. A lot of people have said it reminds them of Redwall.
I have a few books from the series that I’ve red so many times that they’ve fallen apart. I’m missing the first chapter of Mattimo and Tagerung is split in two. My only complaint is that we never got a nice fox but that was just because I love foxes 😁
In the cartoon “John Churchmouse claims to be Cornflower's father and Mattimeo's grandfather, which would make Tess the younger sister of Cornflower and the aunt of Mattimeo. As the two eventually wed, this is a continuity error.” lol
Hey everyone! Am I the only one who wants to live at Redwall? I'm a 60 year old who hopes to never grow to old for the Redwall series, The Wind in the Willows and Winnie the Pooh. I have hunted and fished the river valleys of Eastern Iowa all of my life. We (my poor wife and I) live on 5 acres in rural Clinton County Iowa. We see deer and wild turkeys daily. Rabbits and squirrels, raccoons and opossums, fox and coyote, groundhog and ground squirrels, badgers and weasels, otters and skunks, beaver, muscrat and mink. Eagles, hawks and falcons. At sunset the bats takeover. Oh, and the screech owls. In winter we are sometimes graced by great horned owls. I am yearly traumatized by hordes of geese, (all geese are communists by the way) not to mention waves of ducks and now trumpeter swans. My poor wife has been tripping over piles of books, misc.fishing tackle and various hunting paraphernalia for nigh on 40 years now. Burr covered wet bird dogs, fat and lazy cats, rescued baby raccoons and one semi domesticated baby possum. I got to see one bobcat several years ago. I forgot the flying squirrels. Now, if we could just get hedgehogs on this side of.the pond to round out my local menagerie. God bless. From Iowa...............................John
I was literally thinking about this series last week, awesome video! Have u heard of an animated series called Dogtanian? Its quite old, but its also a huge part of my early childhood and Redwall always reminds me a little bit of it.
I’ve always loved the simple design of the books and characters read way too many that try to over complicate every character and it just leaves me hating all of them cause they never feel believable
ngl i've been saying the author's name with the french pronunciation my whole life and now i feel bad 😭 redwall is truly a classic. i'm glad the series is still getting multimedia adaptations, and i hope they keep doing that instead of trying to continue the series under a new author. fun fact: i dressed up as mariel for halloween when i was like 8. absolutely nobody knew who i was supposed to be, but i had no regrets
lol I tore through all of the books in about 1 year, probably when I was about 13 or 14. I'd read harry potter the year before, but my mom got a bug up her butt about them being evil all of a sudden, so that was my substitute. I got the first 2 books new, and then she had the presence of mind to buy them all of them 2nd hand from a lot on ebay. They look like dogshit now, but I still have them lol. I averaged 2 of the books a month. I have since found out I'm autistic so uuuuuh it makes a lot more sense in hindsight how I was that singleminded about finishing them lmaooooo
I read all these books as a kid and was very active on the Redwall Wiki way back in the day. This was before Wikis were the common source for information about a franchise so they were very much a fans-only space and not super moderated. There was an absurd amount of fan fiction, text-based RPGs, and art on there and a shocking amount of interpersonal drama, partly due to a rivalry between the fans who were homeschooled Christians and the fans who were homeschooled atheists. I was one of the few who didn't fit any of those labels. I haven't been on the old Wiki in about 12 years so a lot of the content is probably only available on Wayback now. Feels like another life. PS: Redwall 1000% was a huge starting point for furries.
I loved the Redwall series. I know that they tend to be stories loved by young boys. It is a series that captures the imagination and feeling of adventure. I hope if a series or movie is made they respect the spirit of the books and the nature of the author.
Never read these books but my brother did, and I think he read them all; he was knocking them out back to back, so I had to at least see what it was all about. I remember seeing all these paintings that were the covers to the novels for some time.
I would highly, highly rec reading them even as an adult. Some of the tone is more geared toward younger readers but there's such a rich and vivid world here I think all ages will enjoy
I am curently reading the new german Translations. I may not like sone decisions, but I really enjoy them overall. And to see them back in stores just makes me so happy 🥰
I forgot to also say that it got picked up by Netflix back in 2022 the script is done so so it's just a matter of time and I heard they're going by the books
The only information that is out there when I do a Google search is the 2021 announcement of Netflix buying the rights there is no other news story out there in 2024 so that's not a good sign
I honestly hope Netflix doesn’t touch it without major involvement from someone deeply invested in the series, Netflix doesn’t care, they’re just looking for money, it’s the people working on it that care so it depends how much control they get
At this point, though I would love a faithful PG-13 adaption of Redwall, I am glad that no further adaptions have been made of it. We'd just end up in a Disney Star Wars situation.
6:45 you forgot the part where they beat the enemy with the traits they have been working on in the previous chapters - either through caring for each other and being brave enough when it matters to using strategy like in the old books to defeat an opponent. And defeating them without killing as much as possible. You missed the main lessons and substance of the books, mate. They're educational. Education for your character and wisdom and social skills.
Out of curiosity, what was the resource used for a lot of your research and images? We see some that look familiar. Crediting and citing your sources is a really nice thing to do.
I was an artist on the Redwall TV series back in the day. It was a great experience drawing these characters.
Whoa really? I'm redoing this video within a month to add more details and I'd love to talk to you more if you worked on the show

Thank you so much for the kind words! It's only my second video and so glad it's resonating with other Redwall fans over the world!
props to you my guy, it's great to see someone that doesn't call Brian Jacques a "racist" because he has set good and bad characters. Also, a very good video for sub-100 subscriber, I was very impressed. you earned my sub!
Hey thank you so much! I'm still getting a handle on making these videos and comments like these give me so much encouragement. Cheers!
Yeah I liked the emphasis that the simplicity of it all is to really drive home the core messaging to children. All this talk is reminding me of a bugs life as another example of setting fixed bad guys, in the movie it made sense for both simplicity and storyline consistency.
Who the hell this they are ignorant
I remember first reading my first Redwall book, which was Mossflower. These series is what I read the most throughout my childhood.
Redwall was the first novel I read as a child and sparked my lifelong love for the fantasy genre.
Same for me as well. What other series did you get into?
im currently reading throught the series for the first time as an adult, and loving it so much
Currently organizing my office, as I move my Redwall collection around I wonder to myself 'What's happened to Redwall since Brian Jacques passed?' and you answered that question tenfold. Cheers man, I appreciate the video and information
let´s remember that Nimona was also a dead product with no hope of ever being released and it was a modest sucess, so there´s always hope for at least a TV series
And it had nothing to do with the current year propaganda on why they ended up releasing it
I love this series and was heartbroken when I heard the creator passed away, I've actually had to rebuy a copy or two of some of the books because I've red them to the point the spine is about to split.
Great video mate. Really well made
Hey thank you so much for the kind words. Just so amazing to find other people out there with the same love for the series
"You Don't buy literally an entire series to just sit on it"
Oh sweet summer child I envy your optimism
Still fingers crossed to this day for a TV series or movie, just something. Till then still got me books
This was an amazing video doc, was really surprised to find it was only your 2nd video! Definitely subscribing, can’t wait to see what else you put out!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm excited to keep putting new videos out :)
My middle-school-self was so beyond-absorbed in these books I hated reading books about humans.
I loved the opening with his pronunciation of his name- my sister got to have her copy of Redwall (and therefore mine once it was handed down) signed when she was little and my mom always lectured us on the proper pronunciation of his name because he was very adamant and specific about it at the signing 😂😂
Side note- I am a DnD DM, and I have been trying to decide the setting of my next tabletop game, so I put together all my ideas into a survey I gave to my players.
Reading all there recipes. I drooled.
Haha I had the exact same reaction 🥘
I loved the redwall books, and to tell the truth even now that I'm old, I still do.
Bro I was obsessed with these books in middle school. I wish they’d make a new animated film or an anime
I still reread the books
Was painting skaven, it brought me here. i remember meeting brian as a kid and having a book signed. Those were all lost in a basement flood. Would it be odd at 33 to track down all these books and read em again lol.
Would like to see the search history from skaven -> to redwall lol
i would sit in awe and wonderment staring at the covers for these novels at my school library
He did a book signing at my local bookstore when i was a kid. Got a book signed only to be given away when I was in college!!! Thanks mom!!
I am so glad I grew up listening to the dramatized audiobooks on CD from the library. The stories are incredible, I just read through all of them again at age 24, and they’re still just as amazing as ever. I can’t wait to read them aloud to my future children.
I grew up the same way actually! Wonder if we had the same books on CD haha
Impressive you read them all and now starting over!
Be warned Netflix might butcher it and anger all the fans world wide. So if they do release it watch it with a bag of salt.
Okay come on, Netflix, give us a Redwall adaptation with the animation style of The Bad Guys! I would watch the heck out of that, especially if they did Mossflower and High Rhulain. Something about a rebellion against tyranny, I love it every time.
Redwall! Oi love these'n books, and will never forget them.
I absolutely adored this series as a kid, and still do to this day. I was so exited to hear that Patrick McHale was working on Redwall because Over the Garden Wall was amazing, but alas. Really hope they still do something with the franchise, it has so much potential.
Stay tuned in two weeks I'll be covering this series in much greater depth on the channel!
I loved these books as a child!
This was well done. Thank you.
Even at my age I still have a love for Brian Jacques work. His novels are timeless and will forever hold a special place in my heart. Rip you amazing, dear, soul.
I think the great thing about Redwall is that it can be enjoyed no matter what your age is. And he will be missed
Man I loved the cartoon as a kid and used to VHS record too! Lol
I’d love for a continuation of the cartoon but the way new products come out now … idk if it would capture the same spirit
Now we have an MTG set “Bloomburrow” it’s basically Redwall meets Wind in the Willows.
I’ve heard about that set kinda wanna snag it tbh
I loved these books so much as a kid, they were still coming out when i was reading them. They definitely shaped the landscape of my imagination, and the badger lords were always my favorites, and of them I loved Urthwhyte the most.
I just wish foxes hadn't been bad guys in that world. 😅
I love Redwall! Fond memories of watching the TV show.
In the board game space is there’s a game called Root, that has anthropomorphic animals in a medieval setting. A lot of people have said it reminds them of Redwall.
I'll check it out thanks for. the rec!
What happened to it? Wizards of the Coast "borrowed" it (without recognition) for their latest Magic set: Bloomburrow....
If Red Wall had came out 10 years later we would have seen a ton of TH-cam videos of people explaining the lore of red wall.
Wow, now I'm considering if this channel should change to a redwall vaati. Talk about niche haha
@@exitsexamined I would not object.
I started reading the series, but stopped at the Pearls of Lutra.
Totally understandable - the books can be a bit formulaic. But good you to got all the way to the 9th!
that's totally fair. He had a stroke in 01, so that last 8 or so books aren't his best work.
I am yearly traumatized by hordes of geese,
(all geese are communists by the way) not to mention waves of ducks and now trumpeter swans.
I think that was a main goal of the books, simple design in characters. It works!
Grew up on these too. Hell yeah
Gwelf by Larry McDougall is another amazing fantasy setting similar to Redwall the art in those books could tell the whole lore in itself
ngl i've been saying the author's name with the french pronunciation my whole life and now i feel bad 😭
redwall is truly a classic. i'm glad the series is still getting multimedia adaptations, and i hope they keep doing that instead of trying to continue the series under a new author.
fun fact: i dressed up as mariel for halloween when i was like 8. absolutely nobody knew who i was supposed to be, but i had no regrets
I made it my mission in middle and high school to read all 22 of the main books. It was... an endeavor, to say the least
Wow that is truly impressive! I fell off after Triss I think 🐿
@@exitsexamined They kinda go downhill after Legend of Luke but they're still enjoyable
lol I tore through all of the books in about 1 year, probably when I was about 13 or 14.
The books after the bellmaker the British dialogue got too hard to read so I haven't red the rest
Some of the tone is more geared toward younger readers but there's such a rich and vivid world here I think all ages will enjoy
me and my sons still watch the cartoons i grew up reading these as well
I was obsessed with the books when i was a kid
I am curently reading the new german Translations. I may not like sone decisions, but I really enjoy them overall. And to see them back in stores just makes me so happy 🥰
I'm solely subscribing as us redwall fans gotta stick together
What I remember most about Mossflower Wood and Salamandastron: the violence and death. Even when your audience is children, violence sells. 😂
I just remember they ate endless buffets of ridiculous food
I forgot to also say that it got picked up by Netflix back in 2022 the script is done so so it's just a matter of time and I heard they're going by the books
Oh cool! Maybe I can mention in a future vid, what was the source?
I'll find it soon as I can
No rush!@@immanuelreynolds8260
The only information that is out there when I do a Google search is the 2021 announcement of Netflix buying the rights there is no other news story out there in 2024 so that's not a good sign
Ahhh yes, now I remember how I got thru growing up in the mid 90's without smartphones and Ipads.😊
my 2 year old loves redwall... apparently him mom knew about it prior to me such as i knew of Kipper the Dog and CrashBox
whats the game at 9:27? I cant find it on steam.
Best childrens' books ever
Im 37 and i loved them! I have the first 16! How were the last 6? Im hoping Netflix will make it epic!
I honestly hope Netflix doesn’t touch it without major involvement from someone deeply invested in the series, Netflix doesn’t care, they’re just looking for money, it’s the people working on it that care so it depends how much control they get
Can you do a topic on Gargoyles next?
Will we ever get a streaming service adaptation???
I made myself a large club from a tree branch as a kid so I could pretend I was Sunflash, such a good series! Still love it to this day.
I've played the tabletop rpg too, it's a lot of fun
At this point, though I would love a faithful PG-13 adaption of Redwall, I am glad that no further adaptions have been made of it. We'd just end up in a Disney Star Wars situation.
There have been good adaptions lately - dune, fallout. It's possible to do it right, the right people just have to direct it.
That's what I love about TH-cam, thank god for youtube fact checkers, thank you!
The tv show introduced a lot of people to this series. I was one of them.
Out of curiosity, what was the resource used for a lot of your research and images? We see some that look familiar. Crediting and citing your sources is a really nice thing to do.
Thank you for the reminder! I've added a credit to your wiki now.
