Snooker Incident | John Higgins vs Gary Wilson | 2021 Championship League - Group 2

  • Mark Selby, Shaun Murphy and Gary Wilson have recently opened up about a sense of personal despair blighting their mental health.
Gary has been the most affected. His 3-year steady success rate of 61% of matches won has dropped to 37% this season. He suspected what was happening but was in denial for a while. Finally, he acknowledged having depression and decided to fight it after noticing his weight loss: from 10 stones to 9 stones 2.
The sanitary crisis, confinement, and other new 'normalities' clearly play a role in recent depression among snooker players.
"When you are in your pomp and getting victories, trophies and are at number one, you don't mind taking the snooker depression because you think I'm getting rewarded for it.
But if you are putting that effort in and aren't getting anything back, getting beaten in the first, second and third rounds all the time, and it's still leaving you feeling like s***, it's a lot harder to take and handle."", commented Ronnie O'Sullivan.
The statistics shown in the video correspond to the date of the match.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The controversial 2010 Higgins meeting: Information for people who had no opportunity to investigate further:
    1. Mazher Mahmood, editor of the newspaper and 'gangster' in the video, was known for living performing similar traps (actors and other sports stars). In October 2016, he was jailed for a year for tampering with evidence involving a singer (a victim of his traps).
    2. The original video lasted 11 minutes, but they only showed 4 min.
The video has too many cuts, answers without questions and vice versa. Moreover, they didn't keep the dialogue structure despite being professional journalists who own the raw footage. They could have excluded the moments of fear and intimidation; perhaps they brought up the topic of foreign properties, making us believe that the idea was Higgins' initiative.
    3. Ian Mill KC* headed a second independent investigation―the first was led by David Douglas, former detective chief at Scotland Yard.―He had access to all original videos and audio tapes (as Douglas had). He textually concluded: "I have no doubt that the Association was right to conclude that this account by Mr Higgins was a truthful one."
His conclusion on Pat Mooney**: "he committed the most egregious betrayals of trust ".
Audiotapes revealed that Pat Mooney was aware of the 'bribery'. He told Higgins they were wealthy sponsors, and just before the meeting, he asked him to play along if the subject of match-fixing came up.
*Ian Mill KC is considered an authority in sports bribery cases in Formula 1, Football Premier League and Tennis ATP, among others. He headed the recent investigation on the ten Chinese snooker players.
**Pat Mooney, Higgins' manager in the video, was a member of the WPBSA board at that time.
    - Meeting: Friday, 30 April 2010.
    - Publishing: Sunday, 2 May 2010, 'coincidentally' during the final at the Crucible.
    - John Higgins at the time: 34 years old, married, two children, World N°1, reigning world champion, famous and millionaire (£5 million only in prize money―£450,000 in 2009).
    Statement from David Douglas: www.sportingintelligence.com/2...

Looking back at this am glad he got this out his System, we have seen John, Jimmy throw his cue etc. Maybe Barry should get abit more fire in him. I think this is a good example of how we never really know what's going on inside a person. The commentators obviously had no clue about Gary Wilson's state of mind. I commend the referee for having the intuitive sense that this was an anomaly for Gary. Perhaps because the ref was on the floor close to the players, he was able to pick up certain non-verbal clues and thus was better informed to make his decision. Whatever the reason, I applaud his judgment.
The commentators did harp on a bit too much. But they are paid to provide commentary and so it is natural they would use the incident as something to talk about. And they don't have the luxury of taking the time to consider all the complexities of human behaviour.
I really appreciate this video as it reveals the more unpleasant realities for the pros under the pandemic conditions. I hadn't realized just how isolated the players are during a tournament. These are difficult times for everyone and they too are dealing with extraordinary circumstances.
Finally, as someone who has lived with depression on and off for most of my life, I am thankful that more people are talking about mental health issues and thus slowly eroding the social stigma associated with emotional and mental disorders. It is important for people to learn that it's not a matter of lack of will-power or courage to pull one out of depression. In fact, living with depression and still showing up for work despite how hard it is just to take a shower or brush one's teeth takes an enormous amount of courage. I had to learn that myself and stop calling myself a coward because I found everything so hard to do.
Thank you so very much for putting out this video.

    • @redmondlee5174
      @redmondlee5174 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Charlie_Crown not really. Like the commentators said the frame should of been called. What if he hadn't let Higgins win and went on to win the frame after that. What if that had been the decider.
And why would the commentators show empathy for something they don't know about. To them and everyone else that just looked like a shoe of anger and frustration which shouldn't of happened.
What did you want them to do just pretend it didn't happen?

smashing a ball is considered a concession of a frame, nothing to do with the state of the players mind. that's like saying good job to the ref for feeling empathy and awarding the points for a missed pot lol

  • @Maffchops
    @Maffchops 3 ปีที่แล้ว +70

Imagine being so good at this game that you're professional, you can pot just about anything you like, you can put the ball wherever you want and you can basically play at a level that virtually no one in the world can reach, yet when it matters to you it seems that you can't get it right or you miss a ball - you don't get a chance to do it over and in some cases the whole world is watching and laughing at you for it. It must tear you apart knowing that you're quality but not being able to do yourself justice and the consequences of that must be overwhelming and therefore spills out of snooker and into everyday life. Remember - for these guys, not winning matches can be the difference between a comfortable lifestyle and food on the table.
We need to get over the stigma of viewing those who admit to mental health problems as "weak" or "not as strong" as others. Prime example - Mark Selby, someone who everyone agrees is one of the toughest mentally has contemplated suicide. The point being that someone can put on a tough act and do things that look like they're doing great, but deep down even they are not only fallible, they are maybe not all as they seem, maybe they are struggling even more than someone who is more open about it.
As someone who's fought with depression, admitting you have some form of mental health problem and that you need help is the single most powerful thing you can do. The first step to overcoming any problem is accepting and acknowledging that an issue exists and looking to get something done about it, and I sincerely hope that not just Gary, but anyone who is struggling with their mental health knows that they are not alone and that they keep fighting. There is a purpose for everyone, there will always be someone out there that cares about you and things do get better.

I felt in depression when I was 13-14 yo, it was a very deep hole in my mind where I was not capable to get out of, I actually made it after years of work, but surely wouldn't have been able to do it if it wasn't for my parents who were behind my back all the time and my friends who tried to involve me more on making music, those 2 facts were what made me have something to get back on track, being a little bit happier everyday, step by step, and eventually after like 3-4 years I was stable again, now I'm turning 20 in 4 months and doing very very good.
Depression is HORRIBLE, and there's a point where you're feeling so bad not even compliments or having someone to talk is enough, once you're alone again you're at the bottom again. If you think you're depressed please look for a professional to help you get out of that, and I hope Wilson gets the help he needs as well.
This video is excellent to bring this topic because of how often we get to talk to people who are in this mind-state, but don't even realize, or even if they talk us about how sad they are we don't actually perceive it as bad as it is. Great job Cesar, como siempre!

Well Dale certainly showed his true colours - ready to throw the book (which he doesn't even understand,) at a guy who's struggling. He doesn't need to know Wilson is depressed to see that he's suffering there at the moment and obviously wasn't trying to gain advantage by hitting the red away (mind you, he couldn't possibly know where the red will end up anyway). Obviously the ref and Higgins didn't see any such intent in what he did. Hate these kinds of hypocrites who are all too ready to feign outrage when given a chance. And to be fair, i think Yates tried to put a stop to Dale's yammering. (And i wish Dale would learn to speak properly and stop semi-whispering all the time, but not my problem, not gonna listen to his punditry anymore.)
Good for Higgins, too, but it's as expected - there's some (even top) players out there who would've tried to take full advantage of the incident, complained to the ref etc etc. i doubt Higgins even said anything after the game re Gary's 'disrespectful' playing :P
    Thanks for the video Cesar!

    • @Hrbl.
      @Hrbl. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Whilst I agree with Dales commentary completely lacking empathy, accuracy for the rules about conceding, you can still be suffering mentally and behave as a professional at the table. Nobody is to know prior to announcement from a player that they are struggling with mental health issues unless you're extremely close to that player.
The ref and Higgins didn't see any malicious intent, or an attempt to gain an advantage in what he did but that doesn't detract from the fact it's extremely unsportsmanlike. A situation like this could easily rattle both players and play on the mind. If Higgins felt it was inappropriate and went on to lose the match, I feel he'd have every right to complain about this.
I'm not happy to see anybody suffering but you still have to carry yourself with a bit of decorum and professionalism at your job. Unfortunately as harsh as it may seem, as a governing body of a sport you can't let an incident slide like this.

There are a lot of potential treatments available (aside from the conventional medication and therapy), that your doctor likely hasn't heard of. For example, people have had incredible results using psychedelic substances like magic mushrooms (psilocybin), ayahuasca, lsd etc. Check out peoples experiences of these on youtube, they have the potential to completely transform your life. IMO, it's all about motivation. Snooker makes us fall in love with it, but imagine we become professionals and now we gotta practice it daily, put in all the hours at least 5 days a week or so, so that's not really so much fun i would say. And when things go south on the table in matches, it's perfectly normal to feel extremely frustrated.
& If I'm not winning any events, then I'll work with different coaches to find out what could be wrong especially how to keep myself motivated enough to keep trying.

Dale and Yates were a bit harsh, if it were RO they would have been all concerned about the golden one.
GW is a really good player and he's got the talent, just probably needs more in life to balance things out. I like him, I've totally felt like doing this and that's in the club with my brother and dad! I think everyone has depression to varying degrees and some people definitely suffer more than others. I've felt it once in my life for a couple of years and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, genuinely like an illness - like a virus or infection but of the mind. Getting out and walking every day helped get me out and then it was a matter of being careful with myself and creating the habit of being good to myself, ie treating me like I treat others.
Snooker attracts that type of person I think, because even though it's solitary in that when it's your turn its just you and the table, there is a social side and you can be vocal if you like or you don't have to say anything at all. You can socialise without the awkward silences or boring small talk because you are supposed to be quiet. I love that aspect.

I'm going through depression atm. Lost my mum to covid and world has turned upside down. You can be talking to people you know and care about and out of nowhere you want to break down and walk out. Tell them you can't do it, and just hide away and drink until you sleep. Wake up and start drinking again until you don't feel shit anymore. When your own mind wont allow you to be happy, that's the hardest fight in the world. Scary thing is it can happen to you, it doesn't discriminate.

Very cruel of commentators that they were analysing the situation only from one angle. Snooker is a game of humans, with excitement, passion and energy these great players impart on the amazed audience.
We as viewers love the sportsmen more than the sport. When we admire the pinnacle of human intelligence and skill in them, we also stand with our favorite players through their emotional turmoil.
Gary is one of the most graceful snooker players.

God almighty the commentator’s dragged that on. The guys a human not a robot. I’ve watched players over the years loose it at times and it’s understandable with the pressure to perform at the highest level for hours at a time. He apologised and later in the match went on to say he was gone. It’s one of those things that make us human.

This is a fine video. There are a lot of comments criticizing the commentators, but we have to understand, snooker is a great game but it is a quiet game and any time a bang happens it's gonna get talked about over and over so it's natural that the commentators stuck to that issue. Just look at the Eurosport post match interviews, mostly they are just prozaic. When it's Ronnie I already know everything he's going to say and then the interview descends into whether he's running or whatever, so when once Ronnie took the tip off his cue, it was three minutes talking about it without really saying much. Also, yeah we should all be minful of each others and give it the benefit of the doubt, but really, it would be a total lack of elegance if the commentator made a point about any player's mental health. Commentators will comment what they see in a superficial manner when it comes to anything but snooker itself. It's the nature of it.
One point I have with commentators is the "oh everyone can do this now" spiel. They treat snooker players like some basic creatures that are going to imitate anything different they see. When it was Mark Williams break off "OMG anyone can do this now! World Snooker has to do something" No! Let the players be themselves. Just because one player in a fit of anger swiped at a red ball doesn't mean that all other players on the circuit will go out and start smashing reds all over, just as a very little amount of players took to break like Mark Williams.
Regarding mental health of players, I think it's important to stress that it's not just the others. It's us too, so anyone watching this should be mindful of themselves too and look for signs of mental health decline and seek help, be it from friends and family or from professionals, because mental illness doesn't happen just to the others.
Cheers to Cesar for highlighting this issue!

People in general not ,just sports commentators, aren't aware of how prevalent mental stress leading to serious depression is and how difficult (sometimes impossible) it can be to deal with. We should commend those who have the courage to publicly acknowledge having mental issues as this can motivate others to seek help. Too often we fail to appreciate the struggles of others even when we may have problems ourselves.

Complete overreaction by the commentators. Its just a very human act of frustration, and Wilson apologized for it twice and handed the frame to Higgins. Which seems completely reasonable to me.
