I believe this is where they got the idea for using Red as the secret final boss in Gen 2. The developers instantly regretted not leaving Oak in. Oak has the same type of diverse pokemon as Red and I bet he was intended to be in Mewtwos spot in Curulean Cave while Mewtwo originally was in the mansion. Sensei is another word for “Doctor” which is what you refer a professor by. However, Oak was the previous Indigo league champion prior to Red’s journey in the Manga, so yeah, he *was* canonically the champion.
Agatha also references Oak's past that he wasn't always a professor. In her pre-battle lines she says the "old duff" was once an outgoing trainer, but now he just fiddles with his pokedex as a "shadow of his old self"
Me: *rides bike indoors* Prof. Oak: This isn't the time to use that, so fight me since you never learn. (I actually rode a bike indoors when I was like 3 years old)
Sensei can also be used as a way to refer to a master in one's field as a sign of respect, not just for teachers. For example, it would be considdered polite to refer to Shigeru Miyamoto as Miyamoto-sensei, even though he's not an educator.
heh I use to end them in that wonky style, but it's easy to do with Pokemon rather than the more serious Zelda videos I have done so much recently. Maybe i'll return to that in Gen 2 videos.
"RED! How nice to see you! Would you mind if i saw your pokedex? .... oh my goodness... that's... all of them... every single kanto pokemon fully registered... you even caught mewtwo and the birds... you have truly become a pokemon master... well done. I think it'd be cool if Oak was a former champion that simply never returned to defend his title. We never really see Blue fight the champion like we do which could mean that, after Lance, the previous champion simply wasn't there. If that were the case, Professor Oak could behave exactly like he does during the final game and just show up at the end to be fought.
Well, on the plus side, at least they visited the idea of the Professor being the ultimate final boss in Sun and Moon. Spoilers: Professor Kukui is the final champion position challenger, battling you to try and take your seat that you just got as champion.

You know looking back at the Pokemon anime, it seems like the whole tournament style battle at the Pokemon League was made real in the anime. Because every time Ash goes to the Pokemon League in every region, he's placed in a tournament and he does'nt really battle the elite four or the champion (at least i dont remember him battling the elite four or champions in the official tournaments).
Yeah the anime is where it first appeared I believe ( unless the Adventure manga did it first?) but yeah he never has faced the Elite Four or Champion in the leagues. He had faced them out of the league however and lost
If I have made the anime I would made it that the whole tournament is actually there so that the winner of Tournament gets to move on to challenge the elite four and then the current reigning champion. Also if any Elite 4 member retires then previous tournament winners are selected to be candidates to be a replacement
So Oak just destroyed me in Blue. He had a lvl 44 trainer Magnemite with TM05 and tackle, a wigglytuff and gyrados but I couldn’t see the rest of his team. The lvl 44 Pokémon were so insanely strong I could barely do damage to them. I encountered this professor oak twice before the one I normally see with two glitchy nidorinos, a glitchy flareon, a completely glitched out mon that I don’t recognize the cry and a missingno. Anyone ever experience this?
I’ve seen the team with nidorinos too many times to count. I usually use BOMN with MN being a single character for my name. Bulbapedia doesn’t list either team but the trainer magnemite is only supposed be possible through a ledyba trade glitch to Gen1. I can send a recording to the channel of the teams when I experience them again.
@@Jason-bd5iq That is a glitch team that is used because an incorrect trainer roster is loaded. The real way to get one of the actual 3 Professor Oak teams involve doing the Ditto glitch with a Special of 226. Use Growl successfully against the Transformed Ditto 4 to 6 times to get the actual teams. Not using Growl will result in the glitch team. With the Ditto Glitch / Trainer Fly Glitch the battle loaded is based on the Special stat of the enemy Pokemon, where the team loaded is based on the Attack stage of the enemy Pokemon. Most of the time to get a proper team, you would need to Growl 6 times to get Attack stage 1 and therefore trainer roster 1. However Prof. Oak has 3 valid teams.

Okay, I'm very late to the party, but I do have some extra information to add to the Japanese translation - unfortunately, I doubt that the "mentor as champion" trope is quite what they were going for here given the wording and context. While the literal translation of "sensei" is indeed "teacher" (or "professor" in the sense of college, as opposed to "hakase" for "professor" in the sense of scientific research), it is also used for a number of other titles, most relevantly "doctor". My guess would be that "Professor Oak" was more than likely a localization of "Dr. Oak", rather than meaning something entirely different.
That's a very good theory too. It's possible then that they'd go more the "PHD" route in this case. Either translation would work realistically depending on if he was more into medicine or teaching in the old build.
@@TheObsessiveGamer Yeah, my best guess is that the original intent was "he's a credible researcher with a PhD", rather than "he's a Dragonball mentor who'll train you and then kick your butt for the final test".
