      there's more vibration in the PVC. which could end up warping with prolong use

      I expected it to be just a dumb horn with TOTTALY different notes, like B, D, F#, A#, and D.
      I tried those on my piano, and it sounded more like a 1st Gen K5LLA. If those were the notes, the video would probably be called “Horrible Sounding PVC 1st Gen K5LLA vs. Real K5LA!”

  • @TheChaosJohnson
    @TheChaosJohnson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I had such low expectations for the PVC one, but I will say this: That was the best sounding PVC K5la I've ever heard. It *blew* me away.

  • @CaptainTransit

    The PVC sounds like one you’d find on an Amtrak.

    • @saints093
      @saints093 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree Captain Transit, the PVC K5LA horn does sound more like the kind you'd find on either an Amtrak F-40ph or the current diesel locomotives, the P-42 diesel locomotives

    • @donaldduck3123

    • @paulw.woodring7304
      @paulw.woodring7304 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SD60M There was a deliberate one note difference between the Amtrak and Chessie K5s, and the homemade one sounded more like an Amtrak version to me. I hope this guy was wearing ear plugs of some kind when he did that. Having been line side often in the 1980s for both, I know just how loud both versions are. That is one of the reasons they went to other types and moved the placement of them to the middle of the car body.

  • @SD70ACEguy
    @SD70ACEguy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +78

    Little bit of a difference but I think that's due to the materials they horns are made of. The real K5LA has a more of a ringing sound almost. Absolutely awesome in my opinion! Thanks for sharing

    • @steelteepost9810
      @steelteepost9810 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I'd agree, the real one sounds slightly better. But for the 10x price difference, the PVC one is a real bargain for occasional fun use.

    • @AmJaxineer
      @AmJaxineer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steelteepost9810 Is that real K5LA a sand cast original? The PVC horn sounded far better than I would have thought! You should try making a Leslie S5a if that's possible?

  • @kjrivas7419
    @kjrivas7419 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Scott, both horns are quite beautiful, but different in sound: Your real K5LA is a late MP-model, tuned after a horn that I made and some owners of MP who were my friends liked. This chord is vibrant like a high pitched M5.
    I have the video you made of your PVC K5LA from a distance, and I think it is even more beautiful in sound than many of the common 1980's, 1990's, early 2000's K5LAs.
    In this video you were too close to the horns, hence alot of distortion. I would like to see you make the same video comparison done at the same spot where you made your distant recording of the PVC K5LA, which is beautiful indeed to hear!
    Because your compressor cycled on, I was unable to hear the echoes made by the PVC horn, so in musical beauty the MP K5LA wins, but in db power, your PVC horn is as powerful as the real horn. Great work!

  • @nimrod4826
    @nimrod4826 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    The Nathan K5LAR24 appears to be a raised letter, and sounds pretty good. I think it echoes and carries a little further.
    But the PVC horn sounds like a 90's K5LA. Both sound really good and it seems the PVC one is giving folks a similar bang for a smaller buck! :)

  • @edy21865
    @edy21865 ปีที่แล้ว

    The PVC K5LA is tuned as an older K5LA model (1st gen) with the root position B major 6th chord. The regular one is a newer K5LA (3rd gen) with the modern tuning of the B Major 6th chord in 1st inversion.

      The pricing of real train horns depends heavily on the model and when the horn was made. A brand new train horn from Nathan Airchime or Leslie Controls will likely run you well above $1,000. But an older, used train horn (the most common that you'll encounter) will run you anywhere from $300 for a three chime Nathan P3 to $900 for a five chime K5LA (pre Raised Letter). I hope this helps.
