0:11 It’s 1994 and you sitting at the town’s diner beside your job on your lunch break beside the tracks. You chat with your co-workers as the early afternoon manifest flies by. A SD50-2 and a brand new AC4400CW. 1:23 It’s 1999. You’re camping in British Colombia with your brand new RV, wife, and kids. As you’re about to fall asleep you hear the horn of the nearby BCOL train heading for town. 2:36 It’s 2017 As you wait for the next SB Silver Service to Savannah at Selma you decide to take a nap on the bench. At the last second, before you almost fall asleep, you hear your train, you hear the crossing bells, and you see the big blue and white engine round the curve as it approaches the station.
5:00 It’s 12:00 AM, and the midnight local hauls some grain hoppers across the countryside to their customers 7:28 It’s 10:00 PM in 2019, and an eastbound BNSF Z train passes the crossing. 8:34 Another Z stack passes by, only this time it’s the occasional Ace leader.
We can all thank that brilliant Canadian, Robert Swanson for inventing the five chime air horns. He made the world safer and more melodic at the same time. Wish I could've visited his whistle farm near Nanaimo BC when he was working on his creations.
Yes! Or a BNSF SD70ACE hauling thru Corona or Palm Springs. Wgen I was young, I heard K5LLA's echoing because I lived on Corona Hills near North Main Station and West Station and they were always out and about!
I imagine a up sd70ace pulling a coal train. My favorite railroad, the cp, unfortunately doesn't have ace's and cn has only 4 but they do have m-2s. The up is the most common for me to see ace's, and while they are distributed quite evenly through all kinds of trains, when I think of up I think of coal because they run a lot near me to a nearby large power plant.
Fantastic! I think, though, horns sound sweeter to the static listener than the train and truck driver. All he hears is the steady chord of true notes from the horns. The static listener hears echo, reverb, and the Doppler effect , often simultaneously. The trees not only echo the horns' true notes but the Doppler's notes. Listen after the truck passes the louder Doppler has a dropped lower pitch but the echo is the RAISED pitch of the sound waves moving forward then echoing back to the static listener.

Since I was so busy with the setup, I neglected to take photos of each horn that day. I plan on doing another horn honk this summer and when i do, I'll put photos of each horn in the video. Thanks for your feedback!
Thank you for the sheer effort you put into this video, so we could hear your awesome horn collection. The wide font K5LA sounds beautiful, I can't stop listening to that echo!
The key to understanding how most railroad engineers in the US use their locomotives horns is this (For those who don't already know). One short toot = Full Stop Two short toots = Proceeding forward Three short toots = Proceeding in reverse Four short toots = Crew return to the train Five short toots = warning for animal or human on the line and every one should know this Two longs, one short, and one long = Grade crossing It would be nice if the guys who post these videos actually did this.
one fine demonstration...your're sound in motion captures the true effects of horns at speed on the mainline railroad...nice clean work..keep doin what you do...with my compliments...
I absolutely adore the raised letter K5H, its song is so aggressive, commanding, and unique, and the horn is actually right on key with the original notes, unlike the raised letter K5LA.
When a unit sat on our roundhouse (Denver) running tracks or were made up and ready for an air test, on occasion we would find Nathan Air chime horn sets missing. It was a good thing engineers would acknowledge our hand signals during an air test or they would have gone out on the road without horns. sometimes the control valve leaked and you would hear air whistling out of the manifold on the top. I once found a huge whistle off of C&S #902 (2-10-2) in the scrap pile. We took it into the roundhouse and hooked it up to the 100# house air. when we gave it the air, the blast was terrific and knocked about a ton of soot and 400 pigeons off of the rafters. The next day Bob Richardson at the CRRM had to take many calls from fans who wanted to know what steam excursion train had come to town.
What was it like working for/on the railroad? Did you find it to be an enjoyable line of work? I want to know because I've always liked trains a lot and working for/on a railroad has been my dream job for quite a while. BTW, I'm 19.
Absolutely incredible video and I am sorry I can give it only one upvote. I am old man now and my mind is still in 70’s with GE MD locomotives, dark green, everybody called them Canadians and horn was totally incredible.
I want your guy's truck so badly. Not only can it be outfitted with different train horns but it can also be outfitted with different bells. Seriously, what more can a train fan like me want. All we need left is enough space for a steam generator and BAM!! we can use steam whistles as well.
I like these recordings, because after you pass by the camera, and recede, you hit a 'sweet spot' somewhere down the road where the echoes really start up again...
The raised letter k5h sounds like the old NJ Transit locomotive used on the Gamblers Express. Many a night spent hearing that horn. Until they upgraded
Most of those old horn signals are not used anymore. Only the forward, reverse, grade crossing, and sometimes the stop horn signals are still used. Usually if there is an animal or human on the tracks, more than 5 short honks are used. Usually many short honks until the obstruction is clear.
Of all those whistles I have heard in: K5la: csx ac4400cw's and ac6000cw's and dash 9's and c44-9w's ns and amtrak's K5l: CSX c40-8's K5la: the amtrak's and the csx sd40-2, gp40-2 and gp38-2 Hybrid k5la: Amtrak's and some c40-8w's from CSX P5: all locomotives, specially the old locomotives: sd9 to 60, gp38 to 60, u18b, c40-8m and more ... Exactly, it also sounds like if the polar Express was a diesel locomotive
honestly tho, so true
OMG why is this so true? They constantly use the "distant wide font k5l" sound effect especially when filming out west or down south!
That’s more true than it is funny, wow.
I just had to watch The Outsiders movie for class... Can confirm
The echo of the horns is just incredible, and they sound so menacing off in the distance, and then a little Toyota pops out of the woods.
daaaaamn! even has bells! and everything.. I wouldn't consider that a Truck. That's a Finished locomotive right there!!!
