    Probably my most played game on C64. A few nights of insomnia led to completing the game on a single life. It was worth completing just to listen to the great end theme music.

      Yeah, it really keeps you coming back for more. Pretty good going to be able to finish it on one life. I can get through quite a few levels without dying, but it all starts to go wrong for me at the end.

    C64 Turrican 1 and 2 were the first games that I ever completed. To this day I still know where the clouds are and the routes. I never got into the Amiga versions until part 3 which is a favourite of mine.

    Thank you so much for the space bar hint. Didn't knew that. Great tip, love the Turrican II music.

      I've never had a 2 button joystick for the Amiga, but I believe this is one of the few games that support it. So I think you can also use the second joystick button (but don't quote me on that). And yes, the music is awesome.

    We can also thank Turrican 2 for like half of Duke Nukem 2's tileset.

    I will force my sons to complete this game with me!! Never got very far when I was a kid myself.
    Great analysis!

    The Nostalgy is strong for 8 & 16 bit C= machines here. Turrican found a good mix of playability & presentation.

      Yeah, it really was a great series of games. I feel like games like these were the pinnacle of the 2D run and gun games, before they all turned into first person shooters. I think metal slug was probably the most advanced 2D run and gun before 3D kicked in.

    One of my favorite games ever. Both the C64 and Amiga version

      The one I played the most back in the day was Turrican 1 on the C64, an amazing game for that platform.

    incredible game, i didn't realise it was 1991.. for some reason i thought it was earlier than that. also surprised the 500+ came out in 91.. i thought it came out in 1990.. my memory is shot to bits haha.. great review..

    • @DavePoo2
      @DavePoo2  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the 500+ was quite late in the day for Commodore. And I think they brought out the A600 right after. It's more surprising that Turrican II was an original C64 game, as we were well into the 16 bit era by that time.

      @@DavePoo2 very true. I got a a1200 when they came out, but for some reason, looking back, it feels like much earlier. The only thing I missed about the 500 compared to the 1200 was my Action Replay 3 (cos the 1200 didn't have the side expansion slot anymore) which was great for saving game positions and restarting later - particularly useful on games like Turrican 2. There is an equivalent on WinUAE, but sadly not on the MiSTer. The other thing the Action Replay was good at was ripping mod files out of games, which I used to do and then strip out the samples and use them in soundtracker to make new music.. great days..

    Feels very Metroid-like, especially with the rolling and dropping bombs.

    • @DavePoo2
      @DavePoo2  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bombs when you are rolling were never really that much use, I don't think I ever killed anything with them.

    Unpopular opinion: the better version is the C64 one. Aside from Huelsbeck's technical marvels, I find the Markus Siebold title track more fitting with the atmosphere (darker and less cheesy).
    More parallax on some levels, the funny cutscene of Turry starting up the spaceship's engine, and let's not talk about how they ruined the very last level and boss fight on the Amiga, by removing the jetpack. All of this on the inferior hardware of the C64... it's simply amazing!!

    • @DavePoo2

      The C64 version was a marvel. I think back in the day I spent a lot of my time playing the first Turrican on the C64. I should go through and fully compare Turrican II with the C64, they are both really good versions of the game. The title tune is extremely awesome on the C64 indeed.

    • @DavePoo2
      @DavePoo2  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, looking back at it now, it's one of the best. There are a lot of tunes in there (on the Amiga) and they are all really good. Chris did a good job.

    I think turrican 1 last level (the tower that need to be ascended to reach the boss) is much better and exciting than the alien like 5th level in Turrican II

    • @DavePoo2
      @DavePoo2  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the Alien level drags a bit because it's the only level that doesn't have a rockin' tune

    • @giuseppe74921
      @giuseppe74921 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This too, but if u consider that Turrican 1 fourth level (the penultimate) is also an alien-like level with no music (only creeping wind music that set the atmosphere) similar in many aspects to Turrican II fifth level, it seems that Turrican 2 almost copied the fourth level from Turrican 1, and that fourth level in T1 is an underground sewer sort of level under the final Tower that u have to escalate up, so is much more coherent. In Turrican 2 it seems they just added the alien level for no reason, and if u already finished a lot of times Turrican 1 u will be underhelmed by the final level in Turrican 2, the tower in the last level of Turrican 1 was much better in my opinion. So i like both games very much, but there are some aspects in Turrican 1 that i like better
