Sorry, but body count matters. If you're guy 51, the likelihood that you're THE one for her is slim to none. You're just Mr. Right Now. It's NOT a normal thing to ask about a woman's body count unless you are insecure. If her body count was in question for real, you'd likely have notions before hand.
NO, stop shaming men for wanting to know it. If a woman has a high body count, it means she is not wife material, not even girlfriend material. The man is not insecure if he wants to know, he just wants to be able to assess his possible future with the woman. If a man does not care about a woman, then he will not care about her body count, because he will only want her for a short term relationship of a few weeks.months, just to use her for his short-term satisfaction, so he will not care to ask. But if the man is serious about the woman, and tries to assess if she is worthy for wife, then he wants to know that number.
If I were looking for a suitable partner. Body count is one of those variables that gives me valuable information about who that person is, was, and what they are likely to do in the future.
If body count is something you feel ashamed or embarrassed of, then that alone is proof that it matters.

Half-way in, I thought the twist was going to be that Nikki knew exactly what he was getting at, and later bragged to a friend that she had successfully managed to avoid answering.

You missed the joke obviously. He constantly objectified her, didn’t allow to answer, went on a psychotic rant fueled by insecurity and basically had an emotional breakdown over a simple question that he couldn’t even ask her directly.
The moral of the story being that insecurity and emotional immaturity is a problem, and that it leads many people to push others away.
That relationship was clearly never going to go anywhere if he was going to continue with outbursts over the smallest things. It’s even sadder when the answer is something like “none” because not only did you make yourself look foolish, you also make people not want to be around you.
This unfortunately happened to an acquaintance of mine. But humans will always put feelings before facts and rationality, so their relationships will keep failing miserably.
