I have a 718 Cayman GTS (4cyl), and it’s a ROCKET! Like you said, don’t sleep on these 4cyl. They feel faster than my V8s on the public roads, especially low down in the torque curve. Small, nimble, agile… just a fun fun car
The base is considerably lighter than the sixes. Order it with a PDK and sports chrono and it will do 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds. Fast enough for me. Enjoyed the video.
The base and S can also be tuned to a much higher degree than the GTS 4.0. A tuned S will certainly be faster than a tuned GTS 4.0. The turbo also has more low and mid power. Yes no one wants the flat-4, especially the base, but that makes for a good deal. I would also imagine that with a new exhaust it could sound much better as well. On a car like this I would always try to get it as a manual over the PDK.
@@nafnaf0 i got a catless and full catback exhaust on my 718 base 2.0, with an ecu and tcu tune from Cobb and it pulls like insane. 0-100km (62) in 4.1s is no joke. That's technically 992.1 base or s territory.
Topher was like, "Oh boy, we got a race car that just pulled out. let's throw ourselves into Sport, let's go Manual mode...", then he dusted him in three seconds. Great video. The dog in the Oldsmobile, head out the window, also was loving the speed.
I've got an 18 Boxster 718 GTS and love it. When they first came out I rented the base model twice and parked my old 987.1 Cayman S manual at the shop to get a headlight replaced. First one was a black base 718 Boxster with the Boxster S wheels and no other options. I took it up California hwy 74 toward Pinyon, my home turf! Had it for a week and took it up and down 74 multiple times and was extremely impressed at the excellence it provided me. I've driven every car I've owned up that road and couldn't get over the way that one one went up that hill! My first car when I was a kid there was a 1976 BMW 2002 4speed manual and I used to love the way was on the twisty ride up from sea level in the low desert to the Pinyon pines at about 7000 feet. Other notable cars I've owned and driven up their are, 1985 911, 1991 911, 2006 CaymanS, all coupes and manuals. That base version that I rented sold me even though it sounded different. And pdk even, I love, it shifts so fast, or so smooth and, even if you want to race with your right hand on the shifter you can push up for downshifts and down for up shifts, really fun, but also new for the 718 gen. 981 and 987.2 with pdk it's down to downshift and up to upshift. Key note is that it's more natural to pull the lever down and upshift especially when cornering and up to downshift. I love my 718 and wouldn't trade it for any of my previous Porsches, although they're all worth more than my way newer and way better 718 GTS. It's got 3 intercoolers and one the most advanced and best turbos ever made. The turbo sounds alone I love too. You can actually hear the turbo in it which sounds way cooler than my flat 6 cars ever did. I'd by a Ferrari any model if I wanted a car that sounded like a racer and was content with parking it mostly because of maintenance. But I'm not that dude. I drive my cars and need some service by someone who's not gonna charge me like it's a Mafia set up for a pat down. I love my economy Ferrari, turbo sounds and all. My 718 just hits me up for gas and oil, and about a $1300 monthly payment. Love this car, it's Excellent!
The S with 2.5 L is a blast as well in PDK, so fast, ownership since July. Coming out of a Stage 1Golf R Travels well, with the 14 way seats, done 6000kms in 2 months. Fits 3 carry ons and 3 other small bags. Your assessment is spot on.
Man I'm falling a lot more in love with this car! Thank you so much for the review and in depth video! I agree with you, I'm a fan aswell! I've been doing specs nonstop hahaha! This is amazing!
Glad you enjoyed the 718 Boxster. It is a fun car out of the box (no pun intended). I had a 2017 718 Boxster S w/ 2.5 (350 hp) and PDK for 7 years. It does have a very different sound than the flat 6, but it never lacked for power at any time at any RPM. Interesting that Porsche made almost no changes between 2017 and now on the base and S model 718s (which is basically the 2nd gen of the 981, sharing much of the body and mechanicals even though they improved the steering and interior on the 718). My S was purchased new for about $75k (back when you could get almost 10% discounts on models in stock, which in itself is a novelty today) on an $83k price tag, which included the premium package and 14 way seats with the lower-cost two tone black and red seat package as opposed to the full leather. The car was sold last year and I have the Carrera T, which is my bucket list car (first and probably last new 911 I will ever get). The 718 Boxster is fantastic though, and after recently driving a 986 Boxster (1998) through Turo rentals in Southern California, the newer Boxster platform is better in every way, except for the engine sound at higher RPMs and maybe the price tag (even allowing for inflation from 1998).
I never really been a fan of the infotainment screens so cars like this captivate me. The only things I would want an infotainment for is Apple Car Play, ambient lighting if available and backup camera just in case of low objects or kids, though I turn around and use my eyes to see behind myself, other than that I rather switches and buttons for everything else. I would buy this Boxster
This car looks like its 20 years old (the interior)...Might as well buy the 20 year old Porsche for 20K vs however much this new one costs...Theyre cheaping out
I had 2 versions of base 718, the actual base and the T. I’ll echo the engine is much more interesting than you’d think, despite all the hate. I’ll add that 6mt makes the extra pops etc more randomly rather than pdk (which seems programmed to happen consistently).
For this price range, I'd MUCH rather take a used LC500. You get a thunderous V8, and you sure as hell don't have to spend a pretty penny on LEATHER THAT SHOULD BE STANDARD FOR THESE CARS.
"Prettier" is very subjective obviously.. Personally I'm not a fan of the white wheels and decals, it makes the car look to much like a toycar imho.. Gentian Blue is my favorite, take the decals off, add Carrera Classic wheels, make the interior all black with chalk stitching, add Bose sound, carbon inlays, a GT-wheel and you have my favorite spec.. Base is fun and fast enough, there's no point in getting the S imho, otherwise go for the GTS 4.0 for the sound, but that's a lot of extra money just for different sound..
@@lagerace227 The extra midrange torque of the 4-cilinder turbo boxer of the NA engine you mean? Which is why I think the S is kindof pointless and say save your money and get the base.. The 2.0L sounds a bit louder and more raw as well over the 2.5L.. But obviously you can tune the 2.5L in the S as well, to make it more powerful than a GT4 even.. That's the advantage of turbo engines if power and torque is imporant to you.. I have a base 718 Boxster, for the reasons I explained.. GTS 4.0 unfortunately is way to expensive where I live because of extra tax on it.. It's litterally almost double to price of a 718 base.. No matter the cylinders, what matters is how much boost you get for the price you are paiying for, i modified my WRX STI. Its a 4 cylinders with 867HP faster than a hellcat, and ferraris, you can have a 100 cylinders engine but if it only generates 100hp then is trash
If I only had this kind of money to spend I would put it toward a well maintained, low mileage 987 or 981. You may even have money left to set aside for annual maintenance. Once you get addicted to the response, whale & induction note of a NA Boxster 6, IMHO the others don't compare.
What is the deal with burble tunes on porsches lately. Are these base models are so blend to drive so owners just follow the bimmer crowd way to spice it up?
I get the 718 Base, but I don’t get the “Style Edition” part. The stickers are horrible, it sits too high without PASM-20mm, and white wheels are terrible (to my taste). I’d Just go for the base and as few options as possible if I had to do new. Really though, I’d buy a lightly used GTS for the same or less $$ and get a way better car.
I was driving home from the beach and the trick you showed of pushing the 2nd button down on the pump at a shell station muted it. Don’t know why it didn’t work for you.
Is this the same car Tedward had on his instagram some time ago? I love the style edition cars. BMW had something like on the 1 series when they first came out 10 years ago.
It’s all about how you want your convertible! I agree with the LC 500 sentiment, and it’s likely what I’d choose as well. Some people don’t want huge grand tourers though.
5:39 That's the worst of both worlds. It isn't a real key, you don't get the feel of inserting it into the slot, nor do you get the "just tap the button" swiftness of the usual push-button start system.
4 cylinders is an absolute joke at this price. The base model should have 6 cylinders. It's a flipping Porsche, not a Mazda or something. Why in the world does a four-cylinder option even exist?
