I think I may have to told the following story before on this channel somewhere, ( I know I have on other youtube channels ), but this story is well worth repeating: Although we had already lost John Bonham by this time, and unfortunately, John Paul Jones was not contacted to play a role in the mid 90's Page & Plant project called "the UN-Ledded tour".......it was still worth the ticket price. After watching the MTV version of this "Un-ledded" show", my lead guitarist and I ( I sang lead vocals, rhythm guitar & blues harp ) decided to buy tickets for their stop in Orlando Florida. We were thrilled to discover that our seats were close to Page's side of the stage. I could've tossed Jimmy Page a bottle of beer, underhanded, we were so close. We also got the true stage sound of Jimmy's amps. We were honestly expecting a "half-baked" version of Page & Plant working together for this one, but we wanted to pay our respects & get a "one last time" experience. ( I had attended 2 different concerts with the original Zeppelin lineup years before. ) I think everyone there was expecting the same thing. WRONG!!! After performing around 8 songs, they ushered off the orchestra, and stripped down to only 5 band members, with Porl Thompson taking on rhythm guitar duties, that enabled Page to perform these songs much like the amazing studio versions. Then they proceeded to blow us all away with 1.5 HOURS of the great classic Led Zeppelin songs, and let me tell ya, both Page and Plant were on fire!!! The entire audience at "the Orena" ( the former home stadium of the Orlando Magic NBA team ) was shocked. Plant's voice was stronger than I had ever witnessed before, and Page was using 2 MATCHLESS amp heads sitting atop 3 Marshall half stacks sitting side by side on the floor. The only other amp he had was his Orange amp. ON THIS NIGHT, JIMMY USED PLENTY OF GAIN WHEREVER IT WAS NEEDED & PLAYED EVERY PART & SOLO TO ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!!! Everyone there, including my lead guitarist, who is a total Strat & Fender amp man, agreed that Page was getting the most awesome guitar tones ( whether it was clean, crunch, or searing leads ) we had ever experienced from ANY guitarist. I'm talking absolute bleeding tone. ( the Les Paul's produced in the 50's simply can't be beat for tone........and coupled with those Matchless amps, it was the killer combination. ) Then they brought the full orchestra back out to finish a show that lasted A FULL 3 HOURS TOTAL from start to finish. As everyone was leaving the auditorium & walking through the parking lot, all you could hear everyone saying, was things like: "THAT was the most amazing show I've ever experienced from ANY band".......and my partner and I both felt the same way. ( The only thing that could've made it even better, would've been the inclusion of John Paul Jones & Jason Bonham on the drums. ) I love the old Marshall Plexi amps, but Jimmy's guitars, hands down, sounded MUCH better than either of the old original Led Zeppelin concerts I had attended years before. ( By this time, Page had kicked his nasty heroin habit, and he wasn't too old yet either. ) But what I find very odd, is the fact that this was the only time I had ever even heard of Page using those Matchless amps. Why didn't Page use Matchless amps anywhere else? I've heard a couple amp techs complain that although Matchless amps are awesome, they run TOO hot at all times, so perhaps this was the reason? The only truly saddening part of this show, was they didn't capture it on a professional recording, and they damn well SHOULD have. I've yet to hear even a bootleg copy of this particular show: the night Page & Plant proved to Orlando Florida why they were the greatest rock & roll group to have ever performed on a stage. I've attended many, many concerts from most of the greats, and to this day, their show that night in Orlando Florida, was hands down, the most awesome concert I ever attended. I will never forget it as long as I live.
💥 they sound great in Cincinnati too. It was just like he said everybody walking out was saying it was the best concert I’ve ever been to exactly the same way they were at your show. They impress the hell out of everybody in Cincinnati. That’s all they talked about Monday morning on the radio also and the Eagles were in town that evening also.
Another incredible episode,Jose. I love all the little nuggets you add to each episode. Borg beating McEnroe, love that little history detail. The summer of 1980 is when I first discovered Zeppelin at age 13. My uncle and aunt introduced me to them. I went out and bought all 8 Zeppelin studio albums along with “Emotional Rescue” and “The Game” all on the same day. Those ten album purchased that day changed my life forever. I’ll never forget coming home and listening to each Zeppelin album. I had no idea what order that came in aside from the first 3. What a great time to be a teenager and discovering rock and roll. This is one of the reasons I love the “Over Europe Tour” because it’s the summer I discovered Zeppelin…. which changed my life. I became obsessed…. especially by April of 1981 when I first went to the theatre to see “The Song Remains the Same” for the first time. That was one of the most profound moments in my life. Wow you bought all Zepp albums on the same day! I love Emotional Rescue by the Stones, that CD gets constant rotation on my stereo. There's a special kind of magic in the year 1980. I have several bootleg copies of this show both AUD and SDB and it my favorite of this tour. The Trampled Under Foot is enormous, the best live version ever. One of the unique things about this tour is Jimmy talking to the audience.

Do a recap on the original albums, but bring in guests to add to them. There’s many of us out here who saw the band, and I love Zeppelin more now, in retrospect, and in gratitude that they did what they did. Keep on keeping on!

Sure will! Billy is a local here (I used to get invited to his rehearsals for his band CIRCA: (Alan White on drums/Tony Kaye on keys!!!). My old acoustic duo, Piper-Grey even opened for CIRCA: once! Billy is a great guy. We all SO miss Chris though. He was the wild card in my life’s deck of cards, that’s for sure! Anyway, I will ask, next time I see Billy. He’s across the pond right now, but he’s based here, in Los Angeles (his “Uncle Studios” is where YES recorded Keys To Ascension, which is a fabulous album!). Does anybody remember laughter in deed. Living through 1980 in real time it is sometimes hard to remember that they even played live that year. When I associate Zep with this year all I think of is the tragedy in the Fall that lead to the end. As always you do an excellent job of painting a picture of the times you are discussing. You are right on point regarding the change in their sound. The bombast of the 70s was dead. You could hear the change in all the dinosaurs of rock going forward. Yes, Foreigner, Bad Company, Foghat, Genesis, The Who, Elton John, Pink Floyd all went into the 80s with no trace of their sonic past. Something was different. The pendgalem was swinging and was time for get ready for synth pop and MTV.
1980 is the lost Zeppelin Year. I was struck by the "tragedy in Fall" line...that's a title right there. The change in dinosaurs like you said, trying to adjust to a business monster they helped to create. MTV was....well, MTV! Genesis did adapt the best out of them all i believe! Hell yeah! This is easily the best show from the 1980 tour! (And one of my favorites, too). I do think the bootleg runs a little fast, though. I’d like to give a shout out to White Summer at this show. Jim plays it near perfect in a year where he struggled more often than not.

Your documentaries get better & better, what a body of work Jose, you should be very proud! Thank you for reviewing these last few gigs of this amazing band. I struggled to listen to the few boot legs I could obtain back in the early 80’s. They were such poor quality. My mate attended to of the shows. My take now was Roberts voice needed technological assistance to achieve what he was able to do naturally a few years earlier, it sounds strained. Bonzo as we know now had mental health issues, probably alcohol induced but severe depression. He needed a massive rest a complete break. He took Jason to Motor cross events earlier in 1980 telling other parents he was bored with Rock n roll. Jimmy was sloopy on this tour running on muscle memory to my ears, I was told his practice was lacking at this stage of his career. Love these stories JCM, you’re the best!👍🎼
Bonham and depression yes, you are absolutely right. Where could they go i mean? Bonzo was aware of new drummers on the market and while it wasn't a competition, it must have been scary to think about the future. Bands cannot be kings for 2 decades without compromising their style, Zeppelin saved themselves from that, at a terrible price of course. Always a pleasure to read your deep thought comments Paul! Since I've Tea For One, indeed--interesting. Wish they'd done that more. What's with the weird audience clapping during the quiet parts of Stairway--just feels thematically deaf. Never heard Jimmy pick up WLL from Moby Dick before--odd. To me, RP's verbal intro to Achilles speaks to his doubts, adding another layer of meaning to it at original writing, and his 1980 doubts about where they were, and if they were even going. I know he agreed to go to America, but this doesn't sound like a man who's sure. JCM, your observations are deft and interesting as always. 😊
Robert's words here yeah...premonitory. There was something going on and he could feel it maybe. He doesn't sound sure. All My Love in this context makes me understand why he never went back to that song, it's very sad in many ways! The live show runs feel ike a preamble to tragedy.
At the time these European shows were being held my girlfriend (wife for 40 years) and I had our tickets to the upcoming 22 October 1980 show in Philadelphia…unbeknownst to us at the time the show would never take place.

@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories One of my best friends was a guitar player. I had a mic and a small keyboard and an amp. I would try to do the bass lines on the keyboard and sing! We only had three viable songs. He would show me what notes to hit on the keyboard, and as we played, I would sing out lines that fit where he was on guitar. It was so much fun, and I'll never forget the moments when I hit a line of words that fit perfectly he would jump out of his seat and scream out, "That's great. Write that down! But it was few and far between putting a song start to finish! But I degress, my whole point is whenever he broke a string it would take him an hour to get his guitar ready! JCM I really like to thank you for the videos you put together. They take me back to the younger days. I am disabled and have a limited income. The bills get larger as the pay stays the same. But I will recalculate my funds and try to join Patrion. You should know how even touching one life and make it better counts as much more than just money!

This can be the result of many things, from breathing to temperature inside the building after so much heat from lighting or just the jam packed crowd. Also we don't know if Robert had some type of allergy and voices can react to that quite heavily. Being vocals a muscle, repetition and just SINGING can stretch them enough to find that sweet spot again. Plant didn't take care of his voice properly until his first solo tour and he admitted this later on his career. I don't blame him though, it's not easy being the frontman of Led Zeppelin.
Here's an open question for you JCM, after watching your epic in depth dives in to the whole Zep experience, one thing emerges: do you think egos got in the way and Plant & Page treated Jones more as a session musician rather than a full partner? That would explain why he was left out of a lot of the tours and initiatives up to the reunion. Page brought in Plant, Plant brought in Bonham. Jones applied for the job. Just a theory. But Page and Plant arguably treated Jones as disposable or interchangeable.
First off thanks for watching this one! Your question is very interesting! I think there was a musical respect towards Jones that certainly is a troubled relationship. I did a thesis on this on my Post Led Zeppelin 1990s series, i definitely recommend you watching the Episodes on 1994 and 1995 where i shared my opinions on the wrongdoings against poor Jonesy!

I'm not saying they did know, how could they know these would be the last shows, but isn't it strange that the band decided to go right back to the beginning and open with Train Kept A Rollin' on this final tour, the very first song they ever played together? Talk about coming full circle. One of many strange happenings in the Zeppelin history, many pointed out by none other than JCM himself.
It is full circle, the premonitory feeling throughout this tour is quite strange really. You can tell by some of Plant's banter in between songs as well as some of the musical styles performed at these shows. Also, their career ended in Germany where the last name Zeppelin comes from, it's weird.
The 1980 Euro tour was good. Good, not great. The band had lots of problems. Bonham wanted to stop. He was unhappy with going back to the US in the fall. All in all the final two years of Zeps career were a bumpy ride but still had many highlights. Zep may not have been the band of 1972 anymore, but they were still fantastic when they wanted to be.
There's an unhappy feel going on yes. I feel Bonham and Plant wanted to stop but couldn't say no. Also there's the publishing deal in the early 80s, nobody could predict how classic rock would turn into a royalties gold mine later on. They felt the only way to add more money coming in was touring! Thank you for watching!
It's a challenge on stage. I've played it with tribute bands and it's a drummer nightmare. Bonzo 1977 was physically different than 1980, i am sure a North American tour that year wouldn't have Achilles every night!
You can also (feel) Jones & Bonham shake the basement foundation at Musicland Studios in Munich throughout Led Zeppelin’s 1976 album *Presence* - and in particular, on the track ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’ - during the staccato stop and start sections of that number. I believe the term is: infrasonic.

For me, Kiss was a disabled band with no reason for being a band. The make-up and costumes were just laughably terrible, just like their songs. But it just goes to show how the music industry was headed in those days!
Jimmy never had enough gain (distortion) & it hurt his guitar leads in the later zeppelin years I’m sure he had a guitar tech , unless that’s just the sound Jimmy wanted. Or maybe he was just wasted at this point
I saw Zeppelin,ELP, Yes and Pink Floyd within a few months in the summer of 1977 at Madison Square Garden. These were decent gigs but not the mythological shows that today's fans view them. Definitely the myth is way larger than the reality. C'mon guys..Page was a DISASTER by 1980.
I've been saying that for years. Yes it is always a beautiful song but it sounded so out of place in the setlist like SIBLY(which I also love too) for 1980. Sucks all the momentum out of the first four hard rocking numbers. I've always felt like they could've played either Wearing and Tearing, Darlene or Ozone baby(which all should've been on In through the outdoor) as the fifth song of the '80 setlist and also retired and replaced SIBLY or anything from Presence like For your life, Candy store rock or Hots for nowhere or even from Graffiti like Custard Pie, In the Light or the Wanton song as the nineth song between Trampled underfoot and Achilles just keep the energy and momentum of the '80 concerts going.
It wouldve been cool had they incorporated Candy store rock with boogie mama in the Whole lotta love medley had they all(including Bonzo)made it back to America in the fall of that year. I'm sure Plant would've nailed it. Just my two cents.

Sadly painful to listen to, an ailing Page's playing is absolutely terrible....Bonham rushing everything.......defintiely one of the better shows from the Over Europe but things were really falling apart by this stage.......Hard to listen to after the '73 show....
They played a few good shows during '75 and '77. Some very good versions of NQ and IMTOD. But yes... most of the shows are terrible and sloppy. '71-'72 are my favorite shows.
It's a wonder that Page actually made it through the end of the seventies and early eighties. Sad to think of what he could have still done musically had he not been in such a dire state.

I have several bootleg copies of this show both AUD and SDB and it my favorite of this tour. The Trampled Under Foot is enormous, the best live version ever. One of the unique things about this tour is Jimmy talking to the audience.

Billy is a local here (I used to get invited to his rehearsals for his band CIRCA: (Alan White on drums/Tony Kaye on keys!!!). My old acoustic duo, Piper-Grey even opened for CIRCA: once! Billy is a great guy.
We all SO miss Chris though. He was the wild card in my life’s deck of cards, that’s for sure!
Anyway, I will ask, next time I see Billy. He’s across the pond right now, but he’s based here, in Los Angeles (his “Uncle Studios” is where YES recorded Keys To Ascension, which is a fabulous album!).

Does anybody remember laughter in deed. Living through 1980 in real time it is sometimes hard to remember that they even played live that year. When I associate Zep with this year all I think of is the tragedy in the Fall that lead to the end. As always you do an excellent job of painting a picture of the times you are discussing. You are right on point regarding the change in their sound. The bombast of the 70s was dead. You could hear the change in all the dinosaurs of rock going forward. Yes, Foreigner, Bad Company, Foghat, Genesis, The Who, Elton John, Pink Floyd all went into the 80s with no trace of their sonic past. Something was different. The pendgalem was swinging and was time for get ready for synth pop and MTV.
1980 is the lost Zeppelin Year. I was struck by the "tragedy in Fall" line...that's a title right there. The change in dinosaurs like you said, trying to adjust to a business monster they helped to create. MTV was....well, MTV! Genesis did adapt the best out of them all i believe! Hell yeah! This is easily the best show from the 1980 tour! (And one of my favorites, too). I do think the bootleg runs a little fast, though.
I’d like to give a shout out to White Summer at this show. Jim plays it near perfect in a year where he struggled more often than not.

Thank you for reviewing these last few gigs of this amazing band. I struggled to listen to the few boot legs I could obtain back in the early 80’s. They were such poor quality. My mate attended to of the shows. My take now was Roberts voice needed technological assistance to achieve what he was able to do naturally a few years earlier, it sounds strained. Bonzo as we know now had mental health issues, probably alcohol induced but severe depression. He needed a massive rest a complete break. He took Jason to Motor cross events earlier in 1980 telling other parents he was bored with Rock n roll. Jimmy was sloopy on this tour running on muscle memory to my ears, I was told his practice was lacking at this stage of his career. Love these stories JCM, you’re the best!👍🎼
Bonham and depression yes, you are absolutely right. Where could they go i mean? Bonzo was aware of new drummers on the market and while it wasn't a competition, it must have been scary to think about the future. Bands cannot be kings for 2 decades without compromising their style, Zeppelin saved themselves from that, at a terrible price of course. Always a pleasure to read your deep thought comments Paul! Really. Hope you're doing great for your self!

Yes, and in the context of these shows, i don't think it would have survived the 80s had they carried on. It remains a great studio piece, a work of art!

To me, RP's verbal intro to Achilles speaks to his doubts, adding another layer of meaning to it at original writing, and his 1980 doubts about where they were, and if they were even going. I know he agreed to go to America, but this doesn't sound like a man who's sure.

Robert's words here yeah...premonitory. There was something going on and he could feel it maybe. He doesn't sound sure. All My Love in this context makes me understand why he never went back to that song, it's very sad in many ways! The live show runs feel ike a preamble to tragedy.

At the time these European shows were being held my girlfriend (wife for 40 years) and I had our tickets to the upcoming 22 October 1980 show in Philadelphia…unbeknownst to us at the time the show would never take place.

Very few actually, at least during songs, i think 6 or 7 times!
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories One of my best friends was a guitar player. I had a mic and a small keyboard and an amp. I would try to do the bass lines on the keyboard and sing!
We only had three viable songs. He would show me what notes to hit on the keyboard, and as we played, I would sing out lines that fit where he was on guitar. It was so much fun, and I'll never forget the moments when I hit a line of words that fit perfectly he would jump out of his seat and scream out, "That's great. Write that down!
But it was few and far between putting a song start to finish! But I degress, my whole point is whenever he broke a string it would take him an hour to get his guitar ready!
JCM I really like to thank you for the videos you put together. They take me back to the younger days. I am disabled and have a limited income. The bills get larger as the pay stays the same. But I will recalculate my funds and try to join Patrion. You should know how even touching one life and make it better counts as much more than just money!

Yeah, both kits at the same time with no soundcheck possible on the second drum set. So the sound guys really worked wonders here haha.
Really weird how Plant's old voice comes back from seemingly nowhere for the last numbers. How did this happen?
This can be the result of many things, from breathing to temperature inside the building after so much heat from lighting or just the jam packed crowd. Also we don't know if Robert had some type of allergy and voices can react to that quite heavily. Being vocals a muscle, repetition and just SINGING can stretch them enough to find that sweet spot again. Plant didn't take care of his voice properly until his first solo tour and he admitted this later on his career. I don't blame him though, it's not easy being the frontman of Led Zeppelin.
Here's an open question for you JCM, after watching your epic in depth dives in to the whole Zep experience, one thing emerges: do you think egos got in the way and Plant & Page treated Jones more as a session musician rather than a full partner? That would explain why he was left out of a lot of the tours and initiatives up to the reunion. Page brought in Plant, Plant brought in Bonham. Jones applied for the job. Just a theory. But Page and Plant arguably treated Jones as disposable or interchangeable.
First off thanks for watching this one! Your question is very interesting! I think there was a musical respect towards Jones that certainly is a troubled relationship. I did a thesis on this on my Post Led Zeppelin 1990s series, i definitely recommend you watching the Episodes on 1994 and 1995 where i shared my opinions on the wrongdoings against poor Jonesy!

I'm not saying they did know, how could they know these would be the last shows, but isn't it strange that the band decided to go right back to the beginning and open with Train Kept A Rollin' on this final tour, the very first song they ever played together? Talk about coming full circle. One of many strange happenings in the Zeppelin history, many pointed out by none other than JCM himself.
It is full circle, the premonitory feeling throughout this tour is quite strange really. You can tell by some of Plant's banter in between songs as well as some of the musical styles performed at these shows. Also, their career ended in Germany where the last name Zeppelin comes from, it's weird.

The 1980 Euro tour was good. Good, not great. The band had lots of problems. Bonham wanted to stop. He was unhappy with going back to the US in the fall. All in all the final two years of Zeps career were a bumpy ride but still had many highlights. Zep may not have been the band of 1972 anymore, but they were still fantastic when they wanted to be.
There's an unhappy feel going on yes. I feel Bonham and Plant wanted to stop but couldn't say no. Also there's the publishing deal in the early 80s, nobody could predict how classic rock would turn into a royalties gold mine later on. They felt the only way to add more money coming in was touring! Thank you for watching!
Achilles' last stand is a masterpiece, in my opinion, a solid 8 minutes of flat-out rock and roll! I've always wondered how they kept it up?
It's a challenge on stage. I've played it with tribute bands and it's a drummer nightmare. Bonzo 1977 was physically different than 1980, i am sure a North American tour that year wouldn't have Achilles every night!
You can also (feel) Jones & Bonham shake the basement foundation at Musicland Studios in Munich throughout Led Zeppelin’s 1976 album *Presence* - and in particular, on the track ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’ - during the staccato stop and start sections of that number. I believe the term is: infrasonic.
I love that part from Nobody's Fault, it's so goddamn progressive rock of them, it's a masterclass indeed! Thank you for watching!

For me, Kiss was a disabled band with no reason for being a band. The make-up and costumes were just laughably terrible, just like their songs.

I saw Zeppelin,ELP, Yes and Pink Floyd within a few months in the summer of 1977 at Madison Square Garden. These were decent gigs but not the mythological shows that today's fans view them. Definitely the myth is way larger than the reality. C'mon guys..Page was a DISASTER by 1980.

I've been saying that for years. Yes it is always a beautiful song but it sounded so out of place in the setlist like SIBLY(which I also love too) for 1980. Sucks all the momentum out of the first four hard rocking numbers. I've always felt like they could've played either Wearing and Tearing, Darlene or Ozone baby(which all should've been on In through the outdoor) as the fifth song of the '80 setlist and also retired and replaced SIBLY or anything from Presence like For your life, Candy store rock or Hots for nowhere or even from Graffiti like Custard Pie, In the Light or the Wanton song as the nineth song between Trampled underfoot and Achilles just keep the energy and momentum of the '80 concerts going.
It wouldve been cool had they incorporated Candy store rock with boogie mama in the Whole lotta love medley had they all(including Bonzo)made it back to America in the fall of that year. I'm sure Plant would've nailed it. Just my two cents.

Sadly painful to listen to, an ailing Page's playing is absolutely terrible....Bonham rushing everything.......defintiely one of the better shows from the Over Europe but things were really falling apart by this stage.......Hard to listen to after the '73 show....
You're spot on. It's a shame so many refuse to accept that Page was an absolute train wreck here.
They played a few good shows during '75 and '77. Some very good versions of NQ and IMTOD. But yes... most of the shows are terrible and sloppy. '71-'72 are my favorite shows.
It's a wonder that Page actually made it through the end of the seventies and early eighties. Sad to think of what he could have still done musically had he not been in such a dire state.
