  • In 7 Things I Learned Hands On With Godox AD100 Pro, I go over all the finer points that I picked up using this mini flash for various photography sessions. I used it at a wedding, for headshots, during a product session, editorial portrait sessions, and a creative shoot. The Godox AD100 Pro will be sold as the Flashpoint Xplor 100 Pro at Adorama. I feel all of my assessments made in my initial review hold true, that this light will be great as a hair light or accent light in any kit, but will function as a versatile lighting tool indoors, and is not a great choice as a key light in large modifiers in bright conditions.

    Great find, I'm also using the ad100 pro over head on a plastic boom arm, which is both convinient and easy to do which isn't possible with normal flash heads or you could but then you need a counterweight where else this thing is so small and light it wont even tip over.

      @@robhallphoto Had this flash to compliment my V1 for a little while now and I copied your idea of using the reflective umbrella with the supplied bracket. It's a really nice lighting solution especially in tight spaces where a softbox won't fit.
      Just one question: Have you noticed the green colour cast? I noticed it in a dual light set up on a grey background, and once you notice it, it's hard to un-see it. Strange that they have not corrected this problem after all this time

    I shoot a lot of food and drinks inside bars and restaurants. I usually just shoot near window light and bounce some natural light back at the product. But Im thinking of trying a small light. The AD100 seems to be ok for this, I was thinking of leaning one of those fold out reflectors with white/transparent material against the table and shooting through that.
    I'm not sure if a AD200 would be better tho.

  • @snuwan

    I do not think this is for those big setups where you take a lot of gear, softboxes etc. But for simple setups on the go portraits this could be a light weight portable solution. I am getting one too. I do not even plan to use it with softboxes but with the Godox AK-11 modifier kit. In a more professional set up these can be used as hair light or side lights I guess. Since they are small they will not take much space.

    Rob, hint re placing round AD100 light in awkward places, get a roll of velcro strap (the one that will stick on itself when you wrap it round) and simply wrap to virtually anything, it definitely will stay on and grip tight. I've done it even with the Godox AD600 BM older heavier version lights when a light stand would be intrusive, works like a charm, so certainly will hold those little round buggers tighter than a gnat's butt.

    So, I get that this light can be useful, but if I already 3x v850ii's and 3x AD200s (mostly used with the fresnel heads or AD-B2), am I missing anything by ignoring this light? Is there anything unique or different about it that it does better than those other ones or the V1 for that matter? FYI: I do real estate & interiors work mostly.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not at all Mark!
      It’s easy to feel like “oooh new, it must be better” and then search for a justification. But, unlike other brands (who focus on a small lineup with broad appeal), Godox seems to be unconcerned with crossover and is releasing more products to serve smaller and smaller niches/roles.
      I do think there are things it does better, like if you use/want the round head of AD200 for the magnetic modifiers, I think the 100 pro offers similar performance in a smaller package.
      But, if you feel satisfied with what you have and no features seems significant to your processes, then I’d just ignore it’s existence!

    Thoughts on this strobe for skateboarding photography?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The portability would be nice for a small carry. And I feel like bare properties would match the aesthetic of a lot of the skate photography I’ve seen (typically lit with fresnel heads of speedlights). But I feel like because it’s not a powerhouse in HSS, it might lead to some issues if you’re restricted to standard sync in bright conditions (ambient motion blur)

  • @Camrographer
    @Camrographer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have six Nikon SB800's with triggers. If I want to go for brighter would this be a stepping stone or does it make sense to just go for the AD400 and add to that as time goes on?

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is less than a stop brighter than a full size speedlight (like an SB-900) so it wouldn't be very significant of a power jump. On the other hand, the 200 pro is 1.5 stops brighter and 300 pro about 2 full stops brighter so I don't think you necessarily have to go all the way up to a 400 pro.

    • @Camrographer
      @Camrographer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robhallphoto I thought the Sb 900 is around 33 Watt Seconds. So what would 100 watt seconds equate to? Secondly The reason I wanted all that power was to light interiors by bouncing light into dark ceilings. I've run into challenging light situations where speedlites are not cutting it. I also had a home which had massive sliding doors to the yard which gave access to a full sunlit day. Ideally, I would have lit it then composited but my speed lites at full power didn't do a thing.

  • @tugwilson
    @tugwilson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks very informative, Robert. I think a V1 would have worked for all the uses here where the AD100Pro worked well. The V1 would not have rolled when placed in the tree and would have been easier to use as a fill flash because you could put it on the hot shoe rather than holding it over the camera. The zoom/battery issues, whist minor, are annoying. I was really excited about this light when it was announced but I really think it fails the value for money test.
    Do you think it's possible to make an adapter for the Godox mount that fits on the light like the Bowens adapter fits on the AD300Pro? I think that would significantly extend the appeal of this light.
