A quick update: around the 10 minute mark it was mentioned that a 3rd party company was originally brought on to work on the first Famicom Detective Club game before Nintendo moved it all in-house. Based on the credits of the new remake of the Missing Heir, it appears that company was actually Tose Co. Ltd. Detective NantenJex solves another mystery!
And people say Sakamoto cannot write a story. Honestly that man is very underrated, he managed to create at the same time something as eerie as Metroid Fusion and then something as chaotic fun as WarioWare. Also to know that he's a fan of Dario Argento is a plus in my book.
Great retrospective, I really appreciate this as it's pretty much the only in depth analytical review of the original series, as a young gamer growing up with Sierra adventure games and RPG's my interest in this console adventure series has been very profound for years. I was much more interested in having the original titles localized for contemporary consoles, but the remakes are still a treat and even though the switch collector's edition is of course a Japanese only release, the 170 pg, journal/ concept art booklet is amazing, this video definitely has earned a sub. Thank you!
Another good thing from the remakes is that they fleshed out the characters design after like 35 years. I hate that Ayumi artwork that looks like her toothpick legs are going to collapse under the weight of her big head.
Shout-out to games' OST. It's excellent. I played the fan translation of Part II and loved it. Was excited that they announced remakes of both games, but also had no hope for a localization. Was super hyped for them to actually happen. I hope Mages is able to go all-out with remaking these types of games. Famicom Detective Club 3, Yuyuki, Shin Onigashima, Hajimari no Mori...I will play them all. (Obviously I don't expect them to touch Time Twist)
This is a really good video of the game’s history, honestly despite not owning the game (still unsure if i should buy it) it makes me appreciate it because of its development history and what it means for the devs who worked on it. Really interested in seeing what sort of obscure games you talk about next.
Thank you for making this. I played through the fan translation of the second FDC when I was a teenager and really enjoyed it so it was fun to watch a video that overviewed the franchise's history right before I jump into playing the upcoming remakes. Although I would like to make a clarification: not all early Japanese adventure games were porn like you protrayed. The graphical adventure genre began in Japan around 1982 with Micro Cabin's Mystery House causing a boom for the genre on JP PCs (unrelated to the American game of the same name but clearly inspired by it). A bunch of titles like The Palms, Horror House and Dezeni Land were released around that time and Portopia was also a part of that boom started by Mystery House. Then Portopia brought the adventure genre to the Famicom in 85 which caused a second boom of adventure games on consoles and Famicom Detective Club was one of the titles released during the genre's new surge in popularity. Anyway, sorry for the brick of text. Thanks again for the fun retrospective.
Second this statement, but the fact that news regarding the remakes were silent after the characters for FP2 were finalized may have laid a huge dent on Ayumi's chances. She wouldn't work as that rumored bonus fighter either since that means she won't be bringing any new stages, music, and spirits.
I'm hoping to learn more about obscure games so I hope this pilot works out. On the topic of Famicom Detective Club, I'm at the start of ch 4 in The Girl Who Stands Behind and I'm loving it! Just slightly frustrating at the end of interviewing people it can get rather obtuse on what to do to move forward and I had to spam every possible option twice to finally get the right answer.
I've been convinced! Just bought both games on the eShop (can't help but think the price might scare some away) and I'll get to it once I finish this last Ace Attorney Investigations game. I'm on the last episode, so these ought to tide me over until the next 2021 newly localized visual novel set in Great Ace Attorney lol

Makes sense, Tose has been a ghost developer of sorts in most of the Famicom and Super Famicom games

These videos are gold. Keep doing videos about obscure nintendo franchises. I can't find many videos like these on TH-cam
I finished both games a few days ago, especially The Girl who stands behind got me hooked. I hope we'll see the third game as well.

Awesome video. Love when spotlights are shed on smaller games that some may be unaware about.

I love this, still can't believe they actually decided to localize the game. I would love to see something like this for Joy Mech Fight.
It’s back, those guys at Nintendo know how to throw us for a loop

I believe the only true time a game series dies is when it just falls off. Other times they are usually dormant/finished
my guy do I have good news
Well, we now know that we're getting an entirely new game in the series.
Another great video. That purple shirt is 🔥
This is a great format! Congratulations Ninten!
Thanks for this video! It led me to picking the game up on Switch! Looking forward to playing it!
Ayumi should really be a playable character in smash brothers
No.
🙏

I doubt that she's getting in Smash!

This is an excellent video. Subscribed to your Chronicler channel.
Preordered both FDC games, will play them this weekend. :)
I just bought both games! Gonna start playing them tomorrow
I hope they remake the past fades into snow
After I run through these games, I'll watch these. =]

Famicom Detective Club pog, I wanna get it
-even though I haven’t beaten the PW:AA Trilogy yet...-
Fun video!
Wasn't Balloon Fight's last game 'Tingle's Balloon Fight' which was released in 2007?
You are correct. I was thinking of it more as a Tingle game but I guess technically it covers both series. - NantenJex
Wasn't Ayumi in Super Mario Maker?
What a gam
