Not necessarily. I first heard a Dylan tune at "It's Here" coffee house on Sheridan road at Devon played by a local folksinger with a 12-string guitar, Jimmy Carter (Carter), in 1962. It was either "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" or "Blowing in the Wind". Coming from The Kingston Trio, Cisco Houston, The Weavers, Pete Seeger, Johnny Cash, Leadbelly, Josh White, et al., I thought he was a little odd, but interesting and picked up his first album as soon as I was able to find it. I've been listening ever since and still quote lines from several of his songs, as they apply, and while I like some better than others, I can't really say which I think is best. Having done the WHOLE '60s, I have to agree that he was truly the Poet Laureate of the '60s and the Boomer counter-culture.
It's as if Dylan wrote this for Johnny but I didn't know until now if Johnny took the bait. In particular, listen to Dylan's vocal styling on the line introducing the chorus: "May you stay forever young". His voice dips deeeeep and nasal as if he was doing an impersonation of Johnny.
