- Today, we have a fearsome selection of mostly bad, and certainly weird games -- computer-only sequels to classics from the arcade. That means the likes of Renegade III! Strider II! OutRun Europa! Bomb Jack II! And many more. Some of them can actually be worthwhile, but when they're awful...hoo-boy.

Yay, I got a mention :D But just remembered, Ocean's Vindicator was a sequel to Rush n' Attack/Green Beret. But they kept adding/removing the Green Beret 2 moniker from the box art and adverts.
It's certainly an odd one. I'm surprised they didn't try to market it as a Gryzor/Contra sequel instead as the setting and enemies have more in common with that series.
It’s got Green Beret 2 on the manual on the full priced amstrad version.
Loved the Quasimodo 2 word commands, it's the exact stuff we all used to type and chuckle.
Yep, you always had to test whether a text adventure understood any swear words. Part of the fun :) Many of them had amusing responses (often involving Mary Whitehouse, the UK's self-appointed moral guardian of the era) but some games killed you for it - instant game over - or even reset the computer. Harsh :)
Y'know, I'll be entirely honest I wasn't born in the era of most if not all of these games, but the history, stories, and legacies of these games are always so fascinating! Thanks dude for providing awesome content on this stuff I retroactively love!
Funnily Mario Bros had 2 sequels for the Japanese computers and Donkey Kong 3 had a sequel as well
I bought Renegade 3 on the Speccy after some great memories playing Target Renegade with my pals. What a disappointment! Can't believe it got a Crash Smash... wonder how much they were paid.
Was it Crash who used school kids who played for 5 mins and wrote their review though? The kid probably hadn't even played 3 and just wrote a review assuming it's the same as 1&2 and gave it a CS
OutRun Europe on the Sega Master System is at least better than Sega's own attempt to combine OutRun with Chase H.Q., Battle OutRun, which took place on bland tracks with no roadside scenery.
I’ve put about a billion hours into the Mario Bros. game and watch games included in both collection 3 and especially 4. Highly addictive.
Crikey I miss this video and it's over 2 years old, and so much you was right on the mark indeed Renegade II was a catastrophe, great watch as always Kim keep up the great work
Thanks Kim. Really not having a great day/week, this is just what I needed.👍
I remember walking into Microbyte and almost falling to my knees in awe at the Renegade 3 box art and despair at it being a full price game.
It had to be at least five times as good as the budget games, right.
Not learning my lesson, Crystal Kingdom Dizzy came along and shafted me in the exact same way. a few years later!
Another classic Kim, thank you. I've been binging on your videos all week, fantastic stuff
Outrun Europa looks quite fun on C64. I think it's reputation mainly comes from the lousy Speccy version. What was 'reviewed' (although that's debateable) in magazines looks like the unfinished prototype as reviewers gushed about it's playability and full colour graphics. However, what was released on the Speccy was a boderline unplayable mess with horrible collision detection, crap looking sprites and it was all monochrome. Looking at a playthrough of it, they even had the cheek to rip off the ending animation sequence directly from Ocean's Speccy port of Chase HQ, a far superior game in every way.
Another fab video. I had Renegade III on the Amstrad. Given the madness I had played up to then it didn't really stick out. It's like a fever dream now.
Hunchback 2 on the CPC is amazing, still love playing that on my 6128.
Extra points for rude words typed into the text adventure version!
Great stuff as always Kim, hope you're keeping well and staying safe.
Whats with the music on some of these games?. It’s amazing, great compositions lost in horrible games.
Back in the day, in my country micro computers were almost non existent so this kind of videos are a fun rabbit hole to get lost in!
It's a bit obvious to say it, but I can't help but think Outrun Europa should have been a James Bond licence. A few tweaks to the storyline and you could probably justify some of it's more dubious additions.
Funny thing is i had the speccy for a while, but i do not have the retro nostalgia for it and i remember when it happened. I was happy playing games like renegade r-type etc but then i went to my first arcade and saw the games as they actually were....and tbh my love for the speccy went down quite a bit after that lol
Another great vid as usual Kim. I wondered if the decent conversion of Capcom's Mad Gear would have warranted inclusion? I guess LED Storm as it was eventually known only had a name-change. It would have given you an excuse to listen to Tim Follin's amazing Amiga/C64 soundtrack.
I wonder if human killing machine makes it here? (Commented within seconds of upload...)
Edit - ha haaaa!!! Thanx ashens....
There's also an alternate Gradius continuity on the MSX, strangely.
Nemesis also had a Game Boy appearance as well.
@@paxhumana2015 I'm told that it is a different game with the same name.
Aww we all apparently loved Commando on arcade and C64..
In retrospect Yie Ar II on C64 wasn’t put together very well but at the time I wasn’t all that disappointed with it.. I appreciated getting it being I knew it was rare.. Frogger II which I had on ColecoVision was quite nice too
I always wondered why the Gauntlet port on Genesis was called Gauntlet 4, but I guess this explains it?
Thanks Kim, was looking for a brief escape from that C thing that has took over every waking moment of our lives. I can see me revisiting a lot of your videos for some escape :)
Renegade 3 was one of my favourite games. I found it very exciting screen to screen hahaha. Love these videos Kim
I would love to see the Magic Knight series or the history of XCOM/RebelStar/Laser Squad/Lords of Chaos
Renegade III had an absolute fantasic soundtrack though.
You make the "Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien" sound absolutely terrifying.
Oh Yeah, the good old BpJM. They saved us from these ultraviolent Games like River Raid.
@@svenboske844 , they are fucking morons.
Good video. The MSX version of Yie Ar Kung Fu 2 was brilliant though :P
I'm still sad I never got my copy of Out Run Europa... my mum wrote me a cheque to send off to a mail order company found at the back of Commodore Format... the game never turned up though.... still sad almost 30 years later!! 🙂🙂
Tiertex completed an Atari Lynx version of Strider II, complete with an exclusive level, but it was never released, they were also given the greenlight to start work on a version for the cancelled Atari Panther console
Oooh, exclusive level? Intriguing! Has this been dumped?
@@Kim_Justice The game took 5 months to develop on Lynx, coding having started in Jan 1991...game was finished, went through Atari approval scheme..coder called back in to fix bugs, add extras Atari wanted such as continue game option, last thing coded...'For Demo. Purposes Only' message.
Game had map data supplied from the Amiga version, music from ST version.
Coder played the Amiga version a lot and built game from that.
Lynx version made easier and had an exclusive, secret level.
Atari very keen to see game done, provided coder with lot of test code and documentation on Lynx, which made development far easier.
Coder never kept any backups, doesnt think Tiertex did either, said EPROMS simply thrown in drawer and forgotten about.
Atari gave coder the go ahead to do a Panther version next, but Panther itself canned soon after.
Pure speculation as to why Atari never released Lynx version but thoughts are along lines of:
Declining Lynx market, cost of manufacturing carts, Atari canning projects left, right and center.
29:29 "I presume that this is what working at Amazon is actually like..." As a former cog in the works, I can confirm that it's really damn close.
Golden Axe 2 on the mega drive only springs to mind. I liked it anyway.
Glad BJII is here. I was always disappointed with Vindicator, a supposed sequel to Green Beret! That Outrun game looks more like a Spy Hunter sequel.
Lol at Donna's cakes reference!
For years I ignored the "real" Strider 2 because I presumed for some reason that it was the same terrible game I had played on the Atari ST. Never been happier to be wrong.
I sort-of liked Bomb Jack 2 at the time, even though it is clearly nothing at all like Bomb Jack. I still think the slightly maze-like arrangement of the platforms and the way the jumping mechanic works is fairly interesting.
Renegade 3 was such a disappointment compared to the first 2 games, graphics and sound were good and thats about it, playerbility so slow and really boring in different time zones and monoceome, could have been classic trilogy, but no, 1 and 2 for me please.
Sometimes a fact that you mention sends me into a spiral of research and wonder ;-) Thanks for doing what you do!
Renegade III basically looks like a poor man's Double Dragon III, but is abysmally worse than either version of that.
aaah that's where inspiration for Diablo came, Gauntlet III!
You're videos are invariably great. I was just wondering Kim, do you watch OSW Reviews? Your "knackers" comment got me wondering, plus the fact you're a wrestling fan of course
"Thy game is over"? Was Bombjack 2 based on Joust code?
Love that title.
"Lizard is about to die!"
"Lizard needs food badly!"
Renegade III looked so good in the mags :)
Ha! I thought you'd missed Mario Bros. 2 and then you hit me with it right at the last minute.
Hah! That's Captain Caveman in Renegade 3. What a hoot. I'm sure it's a terrible videogame, but at least there's a bit of humor.
Best retro channel on YT!! And almost 60K subscribers now! That's a small country! All hail Empress Kim! I bend the knee to you! 😁
Amazing and interesting video as always. I love your channel!!! Brilliant stuff!😀👍👍
I must admit to rather enjoying Outrun Europa on the Master System. It had so few driving games of note, and most of those tragically bare-bones (even gradient changes were a huge luxury), to see one with so much actual scenery, grandients, forks, etc. was such a novelty I could forgive the choppiness and weird camera. I might have felt the same for the C64 version, had it possessed a less frustrating nitro system ... and not been horribly overshadowed by Chris Butler's astounding Turbo Charge coming out at the same time, of course. I had Bombjack 2 on the C16 and had very mixed feelings as it was on one hand pretty decent by C16 standards, and on the other nothing like Bombjack. I never knew it had such a weird origin, but all suddenly makes sense.
being put on the German "Index" does not necessarily mean that something is banned or illegal per se, but that it may not be sold to people below the age of 18 and may not be advertised for...
Oh jeez, you missed out the whole scoop on OutRun Europa where someone discovered the Sinclair Spectrum version had colour graphics that had been switched off prior to release!
Gauntlet 3 was amazing on C64... few bugs, but still, the best dungeon game on 8 bit era... and Mario Bros 2 for C64, was an unofficial game, out from game and watch concept... for me was quite nice game
Hey Kim😊. Really good video😁. Very informative as always😊.
I had Renegade 3 for the ZX Spectrum. I agree: it was very disappointing. Renegade and Target: Renegade were otherwise superb. The monochrome graphics were quite hard on the eyes. Can't remember if I ever completed it.
The C64 version of Gauntlet 3 was never officially released, I found a copy in Playnation Croydon for a fiver last year and sold it for nearly £400😳😳I would’ve kept it but it was awful!
The Amiga Soundtrack is great though
Sinisteve Retro Gamer has sold all the Gauntlet 3s lately.
I wonder how many people are even going to know who Captain Caveman was.... or AND SON!
Wow that fighting game at the end could be the precursor to Shaq-Fu. :p Kim did you see the Super Mario Brothers Atari 2600 hack? It's on AVGN's channel James and Mike Mondays. It's actually pretty darn impressive! Another great vid thank you! Stay safe and healthy in these god forsaken times.
Legend ....thanks for the video ;).
Comment we hear too often in your videos, “this game was rubbish, but magazines at the time rated it 90/100.” Makes me wonder what the games were like that the magazines rated poorly.
@Retro Storm A bit like review sites now then?!
Warm Liquid Goo Phase Surely you jest. Right Last of Us 2?
Capcom's REAL Strider 2 is brilliant and underrated!
I loved the original Mario Bros Game & Watch on G&W Gallery. It's a real fun time waster.
A few of the UK magazines claimed Capcom were so impressed by the story boards for Strider II, they used them as the basis for their arcade game, utter rubbish of course :-)) guess the magazine advertising revenue paid for a lot of good P.R
Another great video and some pretty forgettable games there, (Thankfully)!
I would've thought that they couldn't really mess up with Gauntlet III, but boy was I wrong.......
I can say that I have never actually played this on any system, but it looks like I'm not missing out on much, though I will surely find a ROM and give it a go now!
Gauntlet never needed to go isometric any more than it needed to go 3D, all of the Gauntlet games after Gauntlet II were a complete shambles in my eyes!
The two Gauntlet video games that are for the PS2 want to have a word with you.
They are more than welcome to have a word with me, but it will not change my mind......
Although both 'Dark Legacy' and 'Seven Sorrows' aren't terrible games, they just don't feel like sequels to Gauntlet and do nothing to improve upon the franchise.
In my mind the only game to get close to that Gauntlet feel since Gauntlet II, is Monolyth's 'Get Medieval'..... Now that is a worthy spiritual successor IMO!
Shame about Renegade 3...why didn't they keep the Time Travel and use the same engine?
#
Exactly..
There honestly was no damn need for the time travel bullshit.
@@paxhumana2015 I quite liked the box art and the music was ace.
How dare you mock HKM! 😎
I remember renegade 3... boy was it shit, i was young and thought i was doing something wrong all the time.
... it looked good though.
I used to complain about the big companies going after little fan projects more than I do now. In the U.S., if such a project is brought to the attention of a company, and they don't fight it, that provides evidence against them protecting their I.P., and could be used to show that they have abandoned said I.P. It depends on the court and jurisdiction, but there is a potential risk of I.P. rights loss/challenge for PD status if you don't at least issue C&D, at least in the U.S. . Since the big N does a lot of business in the U.S., and the removal of ZeroPaige's C64 Mario marvel was done through a DMCA takedown, that means it was handled via U.S. law. I'll be the first person to admit that we need a TON of reforms in the U.S., though I would also say that IP laws should probably not be at the forefront of said reforms ahead of fixing our abysmal healthcare, lax environmental law, big-business-favoring tax law, and unbelievably excessive military spending. It sucks to lose an awesome Mario fan project, but it sucks worse to get bankrupted by a broken leg.
Socialism makes health care worse! Pacifism is Satanism! Also, brute force fixes DMCA issues by companies.
Human Killing Machine would be a good name for a metal band.
Captain
CAAAAAAAAAAAAAVEMAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNN
Gauntlet III3D is no worse than any other version of Gauntlet that isn't Gauntlet or Gauntlet II Arcade or Gauntlet IV Sega Megadrive actually. It's not a problem specific to one game, it's a problem for ALL sequels/updates. Still the Amiga version had some epic ambient sound a PC would rip Bill Gate's a new poop shoot trying to replicate without a gazillion instructions per second lol so there is that.
Do you know "Morgan just games" channel? A retro gamer who is amazing at playing games and did the most exhilarating livestream of Shadow of the Beast 2. Oh guys you have to see it. Jamie said you were at the expo in Margate recently. Was it good ?
Absalutly love this guy
The problem with Strider is that the speed and fluidity are the main gameplay mechanics Including attacking as fast as you can by hammering the button. So a lot of slower 8 bit ports feel lacking. The Genesis, however, handled the original arcade port great so it’s ridiculous Strider Returns feels so god awful. U.S. Gold should have never touched the license.
Your deep knowledge on the histories and people involved in these very old and obscure games is very impressive. 🦄🦄🦄
As always great video
Great video
didn't think Ye ar kung fu2 was that bad, it looks very different from the arcade game, I think it's more of a sequel of the msx version of yar kung fu. I think it's of the first fighting games that allows 2P against each other, it could be a prequel to street fighter. Only played the msx version, the other versions mentioned in the video look very bad
ZX Spectrum I really wish Konami would reboot this series cuz we could really use another great weapons based fighter on the scene.. There’s also one I overlooked if my memory serves me correctly I had my dad order me Popeye II C64.. I’m pretty sure it was from England.. Kim has to know about this one..
Popeye II is indeed a thing, although it's a sequel to a different Popeye game than the Nintendo/Arcade one. The next video however, will feature an appearance from a Popeye 3. :)
@@Kim_Justice The Popeye/Benny hill/ Trap door games were mad but i loved them at the time.
I do wonder if the hype for Donna's cakes is justified.
the best port of target renegade was the amstrad version. best graphics than speccy and c64
Ohhh donna's cakes
"....where it was hated even more" was a coffee-spitting moment but also a choke-chuckling one 👍
😐 that was intended as a compliment 😬

That's weally wude. Wepent, you wascal!

God, Yie Ar Kung Fu 2... I got Yie Ar Kung Fu +2 when I was a kid. Could barely put up with one attempt to play it. Sluggish as all hell. It wasn't getting my arse kicked I hated so much as the damn thing wouldn't let me fight back! Only with 128K music. Bah.
Frenegade Free!
I’m sorry, are you saying wowbot or robot? And is it Wocean or Ocean? I can’t unhear you pronouncing some of your R’s as W’s.
Another banger
GAUNTLET 3??
First you're going to waddle very slowly and by slow i mean FUCKING SLOW!
Sooper stuff Kim 🌈🌈🌈❤️❤️
15:08 mierdem. LOL. That German almost sounds like a slang word in Spanish. :)
Interesting and well-researched, as usual.
Gauntlet III on the C64 is, as you'll be aware, pretty hard to find on disk only (understatement). In fact, Commodore Format sent me a disk original back in the early 1990s to do an infinite lives cheat listing for. I managed to get that done, and sent it back to CF, not realising of course what rarity it would become. Eventually that very copy ended up in the hands of Mat Allen, established C64 knowledgable person and collector. And how did we know it was the same copy? My name had been saved in the high score table after playing the game for a while with the cheat and then quitting. It was decent enough, the soundtrack (Tim and Geoff Follin) also decent too.
♥
No clue why you could have an issue pronouncing "Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien" 🤣 Did a decent job though.
Like 4 or so years behind anyone else. These games have been covered better by others to death.
