    *Kim, why don’t we identify the elephant in the room: US Gold. Their ports were dreadful and depressing to play.* You would think the programmers involved would have bothered playing the coin-ops before porting them. Final Fight for the Amiga is an utter disaster. The enemy AI is nonexistent and the enemy placement is horribly wrong. I realize the programer had a single weekend to port the game, but gosh golly gee - it’s a dumpster fire! Imagine how many childhoods that were crushed by their weekend port of the #1 arcade hit. US Gold’s port of Street Fighter II was a floaty mess too.

    • @joedent3323

    • @nekononiaow
      @nekononiaow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The low quality of the US Gold ports has more to do with the ridiculous constraints and low budgets under which they were executed. Richard Aplin and one graph it's had exactly six months to port Final Fight, without access to sources nor graphics.
      US Gold subcontracted to the lowest bidder because they knew the (mostly paid for) magazines would review the games favorably and they would sell on the name of the franchises alone.
      Let's not blame the poor souls who did their best under those impossible conditions and instead recognize that the fault lies at the feet of the US Gold executives.

    • @sambas9257
      @sambas9257 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      us gold uk company was simply lazy. In mobygames there is a list of their 415 games under their brand but the decent ones are about thirthy.When we were children we already knew that an us gold game was fool gamble:they had the best coin-op exclusives (and they distributed the Lucas Arts titles) but 9 times out of 10 they plain sucked.As other said...they didn't have decent work ethic: they just marketed well their titles but they were completely disinterested in the "making".It's neither our fault because we insisted in buy them. We didn't have choice. They were the best videogames in coin-ops.

    • @nekononiaow
      @nekononiaow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sambas9257 They were not lazy, they were cynical and greedy. They knew that they could get a significant return while keeping budgets extremely low; and having not a shred of respect for their customers, they made this their modus operandi. Laziness is lack of willpower and it's not willpower that US Gold lacked, what they lacked was a moral compass.

    I was a C64 kid who always wanted an Amiga but never got one. I’d look at screens of Amiga arcade ports in magazines and imagine they’d be near arcade perfect. It was only in the TH-cam age that I realised that most were third rate ST ports that even managed to sound worse than the ST versions in many cases, shattering my illusions in one fell sweep.
    When I did eventually go 16-bit, it was to the Megadrive which was like night and day compared to any of the 16-bit micros. Good to see there were some decent Amiga ports amongst the dross though.
    A C64 video would definitely be appreciated. 😊

    Great video! Outrun was the one that really ticked me off the most. I had my hopes set way too high for that port. I even had it delivered overnight when it was released. It cost me around $70 total. I got home from work immediately opened it up put in the disk and was greeted with the intro speech and the title screen. The graphics on the title screen looked good, so I thought I was in for a treat. Boy was I in for a rude awakening..... I played maybe 15 mins, turned off the Amiga and went to bed.......grrrrrr. I really liked Alien Syndrome, but I think I remember it was missing a couple levels from the arcade. ThunderBlade was ok, the title screen music is still stuck in my head even to this day. I completely agree about the controls being choppy as well as the graphics. Again great video.

    Funny that the C64 port of «Last Battle» has parallax scrolling (and multiple layers at that!), while the Amiga version doesn't!

    • @fuzzywzhe
      @fuzzywzhe 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Graphics was handled quite a bit differently. Graphics on the C=64 was handled by modifying characters in the character set, these were "tiles". On the Amiga, the graphics were just graphics, pixel by pixel. Parallax scrolling on the 64 was done by leaving the same characters on the screen, but changing what those characters (those tiles) contained in them. It was quite ingenious, but quite a trick to code for.
      On the Amiga, you had to basically redraw the screen, unless there's a mode I don't know about.

    • @SvenElven
      @SvenElven 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fuzzywzhe Thank you for the insight! I'm not really into the technical differences, I just know that parallax scrolling was pretty standard fare in Amiga games, a lot more so than on the C64.

    • @fuzzywzhe
      @fuzzywzhe 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SvenElven I might be wrong about what I said with the Amiga, but I'm pretty certain I'm not. The concept of tiles still existed on the Amiga, but I don't think it had direct hardware support.
      I coded on the Amiga, but I was an engineering student at the time, and never got into the guts of the system. I did get into the guts with the Commodore as a high school student as a hobby. You'd have to talk to somebody that did Amiga stuff.
      Amiga was a very different machine, and games that were moved from the C=64 to the Amiga, they didn't put a lot of effort into it. At that time, there were games on the Amiga which were IMPOSSIBLE to run on the C=64 and 99.9% of people that owned an Amiga, didn't look back to the C=64.
      Compare for example Dragon's Lair on the Amiga and C=64 - or Speedball, or Defender of the Crown. Games like Another World were amazing at the time, visually amazing. The gameplay itself wasn't that great. Stuff like that just couldn't be moved to the C=64.

    Another fun (and plenty painful) look at SEGA conversions! Poor Amiga generally wasn't served very well.
    A C64 episode would be most welcome, better overall quality too I think. Perhaps take a look at the improved US release of Space Harrier? Elite wanted it rush released so it wasn't even properly finished :( Thunder Blade is also really good on the C64 in my opinion. Maybe looks a bit ugly but it crams in a lot of the Arcade and the music rocks! Another Chris Butler conversion, that man could do the seemingly impossible on the Commy.

    I mostly followed the Amiga from afar bitd, occasional magazines, things looked rosier in my ignorance heh. The platform kind of had a rough go of it with arcade ports in retrospect, Commodore didn't make a new two-button controller for it despite an improved joystick pinout and it didn't seem to get quite the same coding boon the C64 had for independent game development.
    Do think the cross platform titles between Amiga and Mega Drive turned out pretty good in some cases with Sega's platform being less demanding than arcade tech. Having said that I was kind of surprised how many Amiga games continued the C64 design of SFX or Music only options. About mouse use, it is possible to code that control badly even if the mouse itself is fine, and you didn't always get sensitivity adjustment in the past ijs.
    The reasons vary but I don't think the hardware itself can be blamed since it should be able to render many of these arcade games with some competent 16-bit coding. The good news about Amiga arcade ports is a lot of good homebrew has come up where unbound by cutting edge arcade title release dates or tight porting schedules any arcade title can be ported. For example games that only made it to C64 ports bitd, but really didn't turn out great on any of the 8-bit platforms heh.

      @Retro Storm The Amiga hardware wasn't that bad. It's just that developers couldn't be bothered. They would often have numerous ports to do, to the gameboy, Amiga, ST, PC, Spectrum, C64 and Amstrad. There's no way they could master every platform. So the ports tended to be lazy only using the CPU to do the heavy lifting.

    Nice list. I thought I’d throw a few games in myself, for people looking for other good Amiga conversions, albeit them not being Sega titles specifically.
    The thing is, some folk let nostalgia and/or platform bias influence their opinions, quite a lot of the time. Being at an age where I’ve lived through video games from the beginning, and played them all of my life, I can say that I have no bias in particular, although of course there are some machines I have more of a soft spot for.
    Anyway, here are a few that should be noted.
    Silkworm - One of the VERY rare occasions where a home port actually is, genuinely, better that the arcade original. The Amiga version lacks the music during game play that the arcade has, but the music is, to my ears, poor anyway. The Amiga version has a stonking title screen soundtrack though, and the in game sound effects are much better that the arcade original. On top of that, the player sprite is too big on the original, making the field of view feel too small. Yeah, the arcade hardware allows for more colours onscreen, but the Amiga retains the layer of parallax, and generally looks great anyway, with the smaller sprites helping the feel of the game.
    Pang - Easily as good as the arcade original in terms of game play and sound. If you’re splitting hairs, you could say that the original has SLIGHTLY nicer looking backgrounds due to a better colour pallet, but there’s not much in it at all.
    Pac-Mania - Colours significantly reduced compared to the arcade original, but the sound is close to as good, and it plays just as well.
    RodLand - Again, superior hardware gives the original better overall presentation, and the audio quality is better too, but the conversion is close enough to make it unimportant, making this an excellent copy of the arcade.
    I’d also throw Ninja Warriors in there too. This one is a much easier win for the arcade hardware, with much bigger and more detailed sprites, more colours, a layer of parallax that the Amiga lacks, and it has the lovely score (the same as the Amiga title screen, which is brilliant)) during game play. The Amiga version does still look, sound and play well though, and captures the feel of the arcade nicely.
    Continental Circus is another one. Obviously lacking the hardware scaling etc of the arcade hardware, but looks and plays great nonetheless, with a good feeling of speed.
    There may be one or two I’ve missed out, but they’re most of the obvious ones.

    Back in the day the most frustrating thing for me was bad arcade ports. We all wanted arcade perfect games and when consoles couldn’t deliver sometimes they would make a completely different game then the title was. A good example of this was double dragon, the best version was a completely different game then the the arcade version was and it sucked. Nobody could even make a decent Shinobi port either. I’m glad we have emulators now to experience all those classic arcade titles.

    I never owned an Amiga as I always thought it wasn't good at handling arcade ports, but had a shed load of decent original games. What I love about these trips down Nostalgia Rd apart from the memories, is the differing opinions on these games, personally I thought Golden Axe on the Amiga was rubbish but to others it was the greatest thing ever. Loved the nod to gamesmaster with the little monitor sliding in from the side :)

    Super hang on is a nice port but its not the best port of an arcade. You have Pang, Toki, New Zealand Story, Cabal, etc.
    I specially like Toki.
    Golden Axe was the first game I saw running on an Amiga. Love at first sight. Had to get one.

    Excellent vid as always! wrt: SEGA changing their minds about Sonic-to-micro ports, and computer ports of most/all their future games, well...I can't help but think of later Genesis/Megadrive titles like Red Zone and The Adventures of Batman and Robin (that message upon boot-up for the former just SCREAMS "demoscene", and they're even both composed by Jesper Kyd) and wonder if the Amiga regulars said, "so you won't let us port your games, huh? We'll just take our kinds of games to YOU."

      Seeing it is one thing but playing it manages to add insult to injury. The controls are so unreactive that it is almost impossible to play and the sound is horrendous: the engine sounds like a worn off blender which struggles to maintain constant RPM. The whole thing is really a complete package of fails.

    Great video. Makes me curious, has anyone tried to do a sonic port since then? Unofficial of course but the graphics etc are all easily rip-able these days so makes me wonder what the Amiga's technical limitations that make it difficult. Less colours obviously but surely it could run as fast?

    Bonanza Bros - which I absolutely love, is a port of the Mega Drive version and not the arcade machine: which has far more complex graphics. It's probably why U.S. Gold chose the Mega Drive release as an easier project. It's also an ST port over because during the bonus rounds you can see that they forgot to add extra colours available to them with the Amiga's larger palette.
    I recall either ACE or The Games Machine reporting that Elite were going to repackage Space Harrier with all the levels - as one complete game and it was bloody expensive but I'm not sure why that particular version has vanished. Perhaps it was never released in the end.

    To make the Amiga a home computer rather they made a lot of the bitmap graphics support and got rid of many of the good things in the Atari 8 bit series that enabled it to make a good show with a tiny memory, multicolour programable tiles. If the Amiga had been a console, as was originally intended I imagine the screen DMA available would have been used to supply tile functionality and left more DMA free for more sprites/players. The Amiga just has too little chip memory to keep all the assets to add convincing animation to objects even if the machine was fast enough they still would be jerky.

      There are many Amiga classics of very high quality of similar types than the games presented here: racing, shmups, platforms and so on which prove that the machine was perfectly capable in the rig hands and with a reasonable budget, i.e., as long as US Gold was not involved. 😉
