I think generally people should be conservative about buying under-performing hardware if we don't require the form factor. There are so many old computers and monitors, literally thrown out as e-waste which can be repurposed as a second PC, arcade cabinets or a fun DIY project at home. My brother picked up an old Compaq Elitedesk from the dumpster. 8GB of RAM, core2duo, and 500GB HDD, He switched out processor to a 15$ core2quad 9400. added a 256GB SSD for 20$ and plugged in his old GTX750Ti. It feels incredibly modern and snappy for modern use. The computer plays Witcher 3 flawlessly at 1080p 30fps even in heavy environments like "the brookback bog". This is his primary office PC, while his modern gaming rig is connected to the TV in the living room. It has tons of retro games and both him and his kids play on it. He locks many modern games to 30fps to help out the CPU out, but it is a very solid "console experience".... for cost that is lower than a RPI4.
@@darnell021 I haven't done a watt-check. But generally 750Ti draws around 15W at idle. the 9400 draws somewhere around 30W at idle so let's say you end up with 50-60W when it is turned on. But these complementary machines aren't turned on that often.. If people are concerned with energy consumption they should look over insulation as well as their heating/cooling solution. Since that is where you can actually save A LOT of power use. Home electronics barely do any difference to the overall energy use in a home and shaving off a couple of watts on home electronics won't do much of a difference. Especially considering the power consumption required for manufacturing new goods. Think about the extra environmental cost power requirement of mining raw materials (gold, copper, tin, oil), the cost of manufacturing > storage > shipping, storage > postal transportation for a device that is already not very capable, only to thrown away or recycled a few years later. (which is a complete separate problem since it is extremely hard to recycle raw materials from PCBs and they generally end up in landfills in impoverished areas of the world.) I would argue, buy something that will last, re-use what is out there, repair things that are broken. I still use my Commodore Amiga 1200 from 1992 and crazily enough it does some things better than my modern PC. :) I still use my NAD amplifier from 1995 and my B&W speakers from 1996. I just bought a small RCA bluetooth dongle and it became a modern streaming-setup. (Instead of buying everything anew)
After posting my video for the AWOW PC stick yesterday, the company reached out and offered a whopping 35% discount that is stackable with their current 5% off coupon on Amazon. That brings the price of the 128GB model down to $150. I don't usually post follow-ups to my videos like this, but I thought this discount was significant since it shifts the value paradigm of this device significantly; it's now cheaper than many other PCs that don't have this portable form factor. Here are the discount codes: 41S64G35OFF (64GB model) 41S128G35OFF (128GB model) -- no longer works, see update below ** ** UPDATE: This ended up selling so many units that the company ran out of their 128GB promo code allotment at this price point (apparently they are limited by Amazon). They added another coupon code of RUSS15OFF for the 128GB model, which will still work with their existing 5% coupon on the site. Note that this is a lesser discount than before and is limited to 30 units. Both codes are good through November 17th, 2021. Here is the link to the product: amzn.to/2YYzqPP
Woah, HUGE discount. I snapped one up right away. I can see why the retail price seems high, since it comes with Windows 10. But this coupon code makes it a perfect fit to replace the RPi4 in my arcade cabinet. I'm excited to get to work on this! Excellent overview video, as always.
I love these little pc's! I just bought my mom the GMK Nucbox and she loves it! It's her TV PC! Watches all of her movies in 4k, loaded up Retroarch for her to get her nostalgia on and it's so small and takes like so little power so it's perfect! "Never seen Gods of War: Olympus level 2" hah...as a 'more senior' subscriber I'd never experienced Gods of War at all until I started watching all these emulation videos! Your videos in only the last 3 months have been so informative, professional an very costly to my pocket 🤦🏻♂️ thank you though, great stuff
I know it’s just a computer, albeit mini, but it’s nice to see you don’t have to edit the settings as much out of the box. I seem to have an issue where I get obsessed with modifying the settings to be perfect even on my main rig. Edit: also 150$ with that discount you got on top of the current one is an amazing price especially since it’s better then a pi.
Great video, I've always wanted to build a custom Arcade setup that ran directly from a device like this, but I was completely ignorant and not sure where to look. This definitely gives me inspiration to pursue building one
Cheers Russ, buttery smooth presentation.... It's probably not the most cost effective PC solution, but the 'Windows pocketable handheld' prospects are looking good, if expensive. Tantalising emulation performance. :)
I really enjoy watching your down to earth reviews on retro gaming. I'm leaning toward buying a modded Xbox 360 Light sometime late next year. From what I understand their pretty good up to PS1 and maybe Gamecube as well.
Perhaps you should do a mini-series about turning things into emulation devices. Theoretically anything that can be jailbroken might be doable. Like Car android devices.
I swear I will watch EVERY video you make just to look for yet another cameo appearance of "onionsaregross" LOL!!! It's almost an inside joke that everyone gets to be in on! LOL!
Can't wait for a version with the 10nm version of the chipset to come out. Almost bought the J4125 version but N5905 easily adds 10-20% performance boost, which might just make Gamecube emulation smooth.
There's a J4125 version sold here so I think it can go up to gamecube with no problems. If these things are getting upgrades I really hope they can embed the powersupply to the unit itself. Might call it the PC brick at that point 😂 wouldn't mind carrying around a PC brick that plays retro games🤣
hey Russ, thanks so much for making these videos! I may have missed it, but have you ever or are you planning on making a video with a build that can handle higher performance emulation?
I realize this question isn't about the actual product this video was made for lol, my apologies. But my eyes were immediately drawn to that watch lol. I NEED to know what it is?? I tried to pause and take a peek, but I just couldn't see. I thought maybe a Garmin Fenix of some sort. Love your content btw!
I’d love to see an optimal settings video for each emulator on this PC stick. I bought it and it’s great but I’m a little overwhelmed with all of the settings for each console.
Retrobat could work well on it too. Air mouse and keyboard set up would be great to if you don't want to be limited to cord length with practically no latency or lag. (NewAgeRipper)
Yeah I learned after the fact that you can buy a license for the Linux build too, so I may go that route. Although the Flycast standalone emulator is working well too!
Do a review on the butter next. And maybe some of that Kerrygold cheese. But also re: bluetooth lag. It's the PC that's the issue and not the BT dongle?
Hoping someone with more knowledge than me sees this. I got this neat PC stick to do exactly what the video is about. Everything went fine until I tried to connect to my wifi. The network shows up, I entered the password, but it refuses to actually connect to the internet. I've rebooted a dozen times and searched the Batocera forums for answers but nothing works. I'm super bummed, half the fun was going to be all the nice box art and themes, which I wont be able to do now.
Yep, I would maybe wait until they lower the price or upgrade the CPU at this same price point. It's a great value for what it does, but it's still an investment.
Are you getting a PS5000 to review? It has a 5+" IPS Oled screen and someone has created cfw for it. It's about £50 UK money and it seems to have a lot of potential for its value. I'm thinking of getting one, I was hoping someone like yourself would be reviewing it as your reviews are super helpful.
Marvel vs Capcom 2 if you don't use the 640 x 480 resolution you will always have those weird fireball glitches with flycast core in retroach, only way you can upscale and look flawless is if you buy a lisence of reedream emulator, with that one you can play at glorious 1080p having zero glitch issues, to be honest in 2D fighters games higher res than 640 x 480 barely does much, only thing is selection screen and background stage will look sharper but I really don't mind not upscaling, for other 3D games upscaling is a game changer tough like crazy taxi, once you play them upscaled there's no turning back
I just found your channel. Have you ever taken something like this and modded an arcade cabinet? Is that possible and if yes, what would you recommend using? All of the arcade cabinets come with old games. I honestly don’t know if it is even possible to do this.
Hey RGC, do you think you'd ever do A starter guide for the RGB10 max? After watching a lot of your videos I think I've finally decided to make it my first retro handheld! (especially after seeing brutal doom working, definitely wanna have that on the go lol)
I wonder if jelOS will run games better like a portion of the ps2 catalogue. The chip in the mini pc is more powerful than a retroid pocket flip and that can run some ps2 games
While I love my mini PCs (I have a shit ton for HTPC use), I hate the stick form factor. I realized this when I tried to put it behind my TVs, in one it blocked the adjacent HDMI port, in another it straight did not fit, making me use an HDMI cable extender which kinda defeats the purpose of the form factor.
The 3 pin plug is UK only, the third pin only lifts trapdoors set in the sockets to stop unattended kids from sticking things in the sockets and getting shocked. Simply telling telling a child not to do that would be enough to stop kids but with me it would've had the exact OPPOSITE effect! Parents never wanna let you have fun so if they are telling me I must not do this it must be REALLY FUN! My little brain would tell me. OWWWW! THAT FKN HURT! MUUUUUUUUM! WAAAHHHHH!
Hello I just bought a super console x pc supreme. However I was wondering if you know where I could get a manual to know how to better operate and navigate the system?
just bought this after watching your video, im a beginner at this and have a question, would it be better to download the batocera directly onto the internal drive, and then run the roms off the external micro SD card?
Batocera works as a self-contained OS, so I would put it all on the SD card or the hard drive, but the SD card is probably ideal since you could still use the Windows side if needed. It'll work just fine that way!
I have a mini PC with J4125, it's even smaller than this however I had the same issues as this Bluetooth wireless keyboard+pad was not perfect, it's tiny fan is loud, it will not be able to at a lot of games even at 720p, I have played 2d/pixel games with no issues though The only thing my PC does better than this is mine has 1TB storage I would really suggest get the cheap steam deck at this point
The RetroStation has a J4125 processor, which is the same as the LarkBox Pro I reviewed in my Super Console X Mini PC video. That processor is slightly better, for example it plays F-Zero GX at an acceptable frame rate, and a couple PS2 games, too. So I would say that the RetroStation PC has a slight advantage over this one.
Hi Michele, once you flash Batocera, you can upgrade the operating system over the internet using the Updates & Downloads menu. So you will always be able to upgrade without having to re-flash. That being said, you could always reflash your hard drive/flash drive and start over, but that will also wipe your game collection.
@@RetroGameCorps hey Rus! Thanks for replying. It’s good to know you can just re-flash the device. Would you have to if you were switching between Mac and PC versions of Batocera?
@@Lustful_Twilight You can use the x86-64 versions on both PC and Intel Macs as the Mac version of batocera is not updated. I tried v31 in Macbook air 2017, light GC is good, WiFi does not seem to work but Batocera wifi is really dodgy sometimes.
Great video! I am currently building my own emulation PC using Batocera so it was really cool to see this. How did you get Yaba Sanshiro working? Anytime I try to use it to launch a game it tries to boot, but just takes me back to Emulation Station. I have Beetle working, but it looks like Yaba has better performance on lower end systems (which is what I am using). All my Saturn games are in Bin/Cue format.
I've done everything this guy did and the Damm thing runs slow no matter what emulator/Core that I use. Fps is under 30 and the audio is Bad and Choppy. I've seen it run full speed after plugging it in and after u unplug it and then stick it back in the hdmi port it runs Horrid ly Slow. Anyone have a fix for this?
Can you pretty please try and make a tutorial on how to multiboot all CFW and stock OS on RG351V I want to be able to experience them all if you can't then that's ok love you
This is better than the GeekPlus Mini PC I reviewed in my Batocera Mini PC guide, but a bit worse than the LarkBox Pro (from my Super Console X Mini PC video). So, in between :)
@@zoey2418 [EDIT]: the flickering issue was due to the unit being set at 30 Hz in Win10 instead of 59.9Hz. I did but it was so unstable I returned it right away. The screen would not stop flickering every 30 seconds or so. Never had the chance to even instal Parsec on it.
Hey Nico, sorry to hear that it had an issue with your unit. The company has a three-year warranty on their devices, and it seems they're pretty dedicated to supporting the device post-purchase. For example, they reached out to me after seeing your Amazon review and mentioned that they would have been happy to replace the power supply for you. Anyway, if you do end up getting another one in the future, their email is support(at)awowtech.com if you run into any issues.
@@RetroGameCorps It is good to hear the company stands behind this product. I am sure I was unlucky here, but having both a dead PSU + a flickering unit (two unrelated problems) was a bit too much.
U know how u made a video about adrenaline... Ye does it work on psvita 3.73... I really hope so because it takes so much worrying to just downgrade it
I got a question about the console X machines in general including these sticks: My TV is 49 inch. Every TH-cam reviews these boxes on a monitor. How does this perform on a bigger TV? Does it look good or: -Is the image ugly and stretched out or -You have very large black borders around the screen and only 20 inch of gameplay on the TV?
Hi, the signal on the TV will be the same as you see here, I was using an HDMI capture card and outputting to 1080p. So in terms of stretching and everything else, the output will be the same as you see in this video. It'll look great on a 49-inch TV!
Honestly I think I'd wipe Win 10 and install Lineage OS for Android x86 and go from there. You'd have several options for a frontend and ever more options than any other platform for emulators.
Hi, I don't think PS2 games will run on this, which is why I didn't bother testing it for this video. With this chipset I would just consider GameCube the upper limit.
I can't speak for others, but I've been working a translator for the past 21+ years, and so I'm particular about what I say and write. I chose to use the word "source" because it's the more accurate word in this context. The word "find" implies that you are going to get the ROMs from the Internet, while "source" to me meant that you could either dump them from your existing game collection or find them elsewhere.
I know about having to buy a license for the Android version, but didn't realize that also applied to the Linux version of the emulator -- thanks for the feedback. Performance on this is better than the Shield TV Pro, but I consider them to be a bit like apples and oranges. Batocera unifies the user experience, and can play GameCube games much better and more easily, but obviously doesn't have the wonderful streaming integration like the Shield's Android TV OS.

Sorry to hear that, I'm still waiting on mine to arrive :(
It has to be sent back and they will send a new one, so a few more weeks and i can play again.
I suppose there wouldn't be much of a difference when using a stand-alone emulator on the Windows side? (Dolphin)
Hello I just bought a super console x pc supreme. However I was wondering if you know where I could get a manual to know how to better operate and navigate the system?
do these devices have Bios and / or the option to wake them remotely from rest mode? I need a device as media server for streaming...
just bought this after watching your video, im a beginner at this and have a question, would it be better to download the batocera directly onto the internal drive, and then run the roms off the external micro SD card?
Batocera works as a self-contained OS, so I would put it all on the SD card or the hard drive, but the SD card is probably ideal since you could still use the Windows side if needed. It'll work just fine that way!
Kerry Gold? you ol' Butter connoisseur you :P
do you have a copy of all of your games from your external?
I have a mini PC with J4125, it's even smaller than this however I had the same issues as this Bluetooth wireless keyboard+pad was not perfect, it's tiny fan is loud, it will not be able to at a lot of games even at 720p, I have played 2d/pixel games with no issues though
The only thing my PC does better than this is mine has 1TB storage
I would really suggest get the cheap steam deck at this point
Apparently, the Steam Deck won't be cheap. In my country, a distributor bought in and ask for at least $500.
Kerrygold, good choice.
Hey was this originally shrinkwrapped?
if you have to choose whould you take this one here or an intel computestick m3 to emulate games
How would you compare AWOW NY41S to Retrostation PC? Price difference is 30 euro, so Im assuming they are quite similar.
@@RetroGameCorps Thanks for your opinion, I was thinking the same. Like your channel
I love batocera
Me too :)
Wait, do I need keyboard and mouse to play game with this PC stick?
Can you connect arcade sticks to this instead of controller?
Hey Rus! If you flash Batocera for Mac or PC, is it stuck with the one version? Or could it be re-flashed in the future with the other version?
Hi, I would test out different BIOS files and see if that does the trick. They can be finicky with certain builds.
Can you pretty please try and make a tutorial on how to multiboot all CFW and stock OS on RG351V I want to be able to experience them all if you can't then that's ok love you
How does this device compare to the mini PC you reviewed before? Better or worse
This is better than the GeekPlus Mini PC I reviewed in my Batocera Mini PC guide, but a bit worse than the LarkBox Pro (from my Super Console X Mini PC video). So, in between :)
@@RetroGameCorps Thanks bro. Got the Lark Box but was curious about this one. Good recommendations thanks again
@@SheepTacoMan my pleasure!
Hello from Ireland, /Mars props on the kery gold,
I am looking for a cheap option to stream my games from my gaming PC (host) to my TV via Parsec. I presume this should run just fine as client, right?
Excuse me, may I ask if you have purchased the 64G stick?
@@thefoildesigner Hello, really sorry for any inconvenience caused. Please contact us, we will replace a new product for you.
U know how u made a video about adrenaline... Ye does it work on psvita 3.73... I really hope so because it takes so much worrying to just downgrade it
You will need to hack (and downgrade) the Vita in order to run Adrenaline. Check out my VitaDeploy video, it's an easy process!
Ahahahaha, butter comparison cracks me up russ...
I was searching franticly for something to compare it to in size that *wasn't* another handheld, somehow that's what I chose ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

PARAPPA THE RAPPA
PC sticks always remind me of Pizza Sticks,
then I want pizza sticks;
So I get pizza sticks!
Then I'm disapointed.
I got a question about the console X machines in general including these sticks: My TV is 49 inch. Every TH-cam reviews these boxes on a monitor.
How does this perform on a bigger TV? Does it look good or:
-Is the image ugly and stretched out or
-You have very large black borders around the screen and only 20 inch of gameplay on the TV?
Hi, the signal on the TV will be the same as you see here, I was using an HDMI capture card and outputting to 1080p. So in terms of stretching and everything else, the output will be the same as you see in this video. It'll look great on a 49-inch TV!
How’s ssb melee performance?
Honestly I think I'd wipe Win 10 and install Lineage OS for Android x86 and go from there. You'd have several options for a frontend and ever more options than any other platform for emulators.
Yeah, that's a good idea. You'd probably get better performance than from the Windows 10 overhead.
I wonder if dolphin runs better or worse on windows on this
Kerrygold Butter for the win!
I see you have good taste in butter
I think Its good for the price but you didn't try ps2 will it run some games anyway good find
Hi, I don't think PS2 games will run on this, which is why I didn't bother testing it for this video. With this chipset I would just consider GameCube the upper limit.
@@RetroGameCorps thanks great review could you do a video on a used PC and add on for best emulation like you mentioned
Last adapter is for Europe (France for example)...
That’s a moon of Jupiter, right?
@@RetroGameCorpskind of 😅
PS: i'm a Jupiterian
I can’t wait for the day that we can play PS2 games on a device this small
GBP Win2 works buuuut... little bit pricey. But its a true handheld. Also you get slowdown on games like Shadow of the Colossus.
were to get roms from
Can you buy an SD card with botecira already installed on it
I'm not sure if there are Batocera cards being sold, but it's so easy to flash and install it yourself, I would recommend going that route instead.
Why does every TH-camr have to use the word "source" now? What happened to the perfectly good and shorter word, "find"?
I can't speak for others, but I've been working a translator for the past 21+ years, and so I'm particular about what I say and write. I chose to use the word "source" because it's the more accurate word in this context. The word "find" implies that you are going to get the ROMs from the Internet, while "source" to me meant that you could either dump them from your existing game collection or find them elsewhere.
a WOW!
You do know you have to buy a license for ReDream to upscale right?
How does this compare to the Shield TV Pro?
I know about having to buy a license for the Android version, but didn't realize that also applied to the Linux version of the emulator -- thanks for the feedback. Performance on this is better than the Shield TV Pro, but I consider them to be a bit like apples and oranges. Batocera unifies the user experience, and can play GameCube games much better and more easily, but obviously doesn't have the wonderful streaming integration like the Shield's Android TV OS.
