I swear to God that I had depression for like 5 years man and my mom has pulled me through these tough times. She also does not want me going through this ECT because my aunt had the therapy and it fucked her up instead of helping her. By the way I haven't taken not a single antidepressant or anything and I'm still here and that's why thanks mom for supporting me

I have ECT therapy for major depressing disorder and been doing it for 2yrs and I've noticed a big difference in myself, and I would so recommend it to anyone who's tried a lot of other therapy without the results they are looking for. Just remember this, you are the one who's tried different things not your friends or family they shouldn't be the ones to make such a big decision like this for you, you do because it's a commitment. Like I said it's helped me out tremendously many people notice the difference in me since I've been going to treatment.

Hi, I live in Spain, and have been suffering depression with severe anxiety for a long time. Now I am 52 years old, and the meds are not helping anymore. I tried Ketamine infusions with good results for only 2 weeks, and tms that didn't work. My last bullet would be ect, but my psychiatrist only change meds that are not working anymore. I am considering suicide, but have not energy to do it.

You shouldnt just smoke weed when you know youre bipolar; different strains can work either positively or very negatively for a person with this condition. I've read that the University of Oslo in 2010 researched and stated there actually IS evidence of particular types of cannabis being an improvement for bipolar disorder. Worth looking up when suffering from this, i'd say.

Yo, those who are being the most critical of ECT are the ones who haven't had it. I had it. And before I did, I did extensive research on it. It works differently for each person, but I guess I saw my own symptoms improve. You cannot judge until you go through it or know the stories behind the people who have had it. I mean, you really have to be at a corner to be referred to have ECT, so please. Talk to someone who has, and I repeat, had it before you call it inhumane or radical.

  • @wendytruxel4153

This was NOT my experience. I was conserved for severe sucidality. I had 20 ECT treatments ALL AGAINST MY WILL. I finally was sent to a half way house because insurance problems. I was able to get married, my husband was my conservator; then I was free. The ECT's did not help me plus I had a terrible injury to my right leg that has left me now to using a walker. To other people, please look at all the videos and read up on the truth first!

The truth is that there are low risk of complications, a one in 50,000 percent of death and many’s people depression and anxiety are cured or minimized. This treatment helps a lot of people. If you would have let them help you willingly without fighting it may have been more beneficial. But where I live it’s not allowed to be used against your will. You have to consent. No one not even a judge can order you to undergo it. The process is simple. They put a needle in your hand, place monitoring stickers, they give you propofol which causes anesthesia in less than 30 seconds, you feel no pain during the ect they give a muscle relaxant. Then before you awake they give you zofran and toradol for nausea and muscle soreness respectively and within a hour you go home or back to the ward. You receive 12 sessions and for some like me you can receive maintenance sessions once a month to keep the depression and anxiety at bay.

I'm not sure it really changes anything except maybe destroying destructive repeating thought patterns. Ultimately I got better but it was a tough slog. Perhaps the ECT bought me some time to do that and freed me from some very circular destructive thoughts. I'm undecided about it as a therapy. On the face of it it brought me back from the brink. Twelve years down the line I have a great partner, family and career so I guess it did it's work but am I the same person went for treatment?

Because this was staged. They were actors. They overdid it with the seizure. In reality a bp cuff would have been placed on his ankle and tightened to prevent the paralytic from getting into his foot. The seizure would only be visible in the foot. It's part of how the doctors know they've successfully induced a seizure.

*****, I don't know if it's life saver for depressed people or not. But it turns the lives of people who have to live together with them into a hell. Those people suffer from electrically induced brain injury and they become a real nuissance for the people who have to live together with them. Euphoria which is one of the syptoms of brain injury lasts only for 4 weeks. The memory problems associated with this so-called safe procedure remains permanently with them.

    • @Alprtngakrc
      @Alprtngakrc 9 ปีที่แล้ว

*****, Here's the link about the symptoms of mild brain injury. www.slatervecchio.com/articles/cases/mild-traumatic-brain-injury-an-introduction.htm
All the beneficial and side effects mentioned for ECT just fit those symptoms that include euphoria mentioned in mild brain injury. Mild brain injury often happens in closed head injuries and it can be diagnosed only according to the symptoms mentioned above as there is no objective test that can be used to diagnose it. Therefore the claim that ECT doesn't cause brain injury has no scientific base whatsoever. There are symptoms of brain injury and those symptoms exist in people received ECT. Therefore they suffer from brain injury. Period.
BTW, memory loss is not a small price to pay. As a matter of fact famous novelist Ernest Hemingway commited suicide due to the memory loss caused by ECT. He said because of the memory loss caused by ECT life has lost all of its meaning for him in the suicide note he left.
In scientific literature there is the story of a piano teacher who temporarily recovered from depression (meaning that experienced euphoria which is one of the symptoms of mild brain injury) but forgot to play piano which was her main source of income

ECT is a great way to avoid confronting and dealing with your life's problems. It is a great cover up of the person's problem(s). The problems haven't gone away. Just awareness of them. How does that affect a person's live? Has anyone done before and after tests such as personality or IQ tests? Is the person more responsible for his/her live afterwards? Where are the tests? Or are these people just zombied?

Most experience permanent cognitive impairment, and many are left with permanent brain damage. This can be total and unrecoverable memory loss for an indefinite amount of time prior to ECT as well as permanent loss of short term memory. People exposed to ECT also often report loss of skills, ability to read/write and function in normal society. This is a barbaric treatment that hasn't progressed in the last 60 years, except for being easier on the eye for those watching.

My mother is 55 and has been going in for ECT treatments for the last 12 years. I warned her about this shit... There is no history of alzheimer's in our family... She began having memory issues from the beginning. Today she called to tell me that she has the early progressive onset of alzheimer's. 8 years ago she went to a biker bar (out of character for an avid christian women) then 6 months later when I suggested going back, she insisted she had never been there nor would she ever go... in spite of being on a 1st name basis with the bartender. I told her then to stop going. This has been proven to cause long term memory issues.

It’s sad that you so despretly clame that there is no Alzheimers in your family, the fact that there may not be any Alzheimers as you know dosent eliminate the chances of it. If you have any actual proof from a university or hospital, then Get back to me.

To anyone scrolling through the comments (just as I did) reading all the comments about how crazy it looks and worrying (just as I worried) about if its worth pursuing, just know this: The the majority of people commenting are doing so from the outside looking in. They have no knowledge of what it feels like to dread every second of every day. They have no knowledge of the hopelessness you feel after trying medication after medication, to no effect. They have no knowledge of what if feels like to have all those years of sadness and pain, gently erased within 3 short weeks. ECT isn't for everybody, and certainly does not work for everybody. Currently doing ECT treatments for chronic severe depression. I would not go so far as to say I'm cured, but it probably has been far better than any medication I've taken. My thoughts of self harm while not entirely gone, they are a sliver of their former self. I am actually about to go into my next session (10-15 is the norm, so I'm in the middle of that) and I've felt no long term ill effects. I even volunteered for a few hours later the same day after a treatment and no one noticed anything out of the ordinary. Worse effect was a mild headache like listening to someone explain climate change is not real or being LGBT is a choice or somehow wrong (not LGBT myself, but argued more than once with people about all the same).

I am 61. I would be dead if I had not had ECT after postpartum depression when I was 23 about two years after Jack Nicolson in "One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." ECT got an unfair bad rap after that scary movie. I have two daughters in their 40's as well as an adopted daughter from China who is 15. I am thrilled with my life, completing degrees and operating successful businesses.
The bigger risk for your life is not really thriving but staying in a depressive fog, which can kill you as well. For years I was ashamed I had ECT. Now I am grateful to the doctors who dared to first try this. Sometimes, we just get sick and we need help. Love & kindness.

I had 6 sessions in the May and 12 more in the September. My memory was affected for 18 months and I lost a lot of memories. I don’t think my memory has been the same ever since.
Yes it transforms people but not everyone. I think this video is very good but it is also biased as ECT does not help everyone. ECT made my depression worse. Something I was not warned about. It has taken me 21 years to watch something like this.

The muscle relaxant is given so the patient can experience a therapeutic grand mall seizure with often the wiggling of toes being the only visual indicator that it is underway.

Looks terrifying and thought that both medicines a muscle relexant and sleeping stops just precise that what you saw. In another video during the "treatment" only your foot and toes will shake a little but it looked like he was in full pain and litterly an extreme amount of electricity trough your brain what's causing that seizure and looks like a beginning 19th century treatment.
And I say this because doctor's still don't know how doing this a lot of times is the last way to treat a depression or similar disorders. It's like trying everything what you can think in sanatorium's in the 19th century to try a hundreds of things and some things will give an unexplained effect also like lobotomy what's terrible mortality was high including heavy braindamage but in some cases it helpen but can you call that then a treatment?
I will not compare those 2 as rhe same but compare it in the way of just do something and look if it gives a good effect.

They performed more and more treatments to her and she got more and more devastated. She forgot my name and didn't even recognize me anymore. Even though it has a bad reputation due to movies, etc., ECT really can help. My dad has suffered from debilitating depression his whole life and after several years of medications causing terrible side effects and doing very little, ECT was the only thing that made him happy and be himself again. Although it shouldn't be something to take lightly, it can really help people with severe depression.

I do not believe in ECT.. my sister had it and it has destroyed her life. Now she also has some strange neuromusacular desease they are still trying to figure out. Man they will shock ANYTHING wont they? makes me wonder about my implanted devices.. how safe are they REALLY?

    • @DarthMadV
      @DarthMadV 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

That's because he's being shocked into someone he is not. Electricity is not going to make somebody happy. Big life-changes and a combination of CUSTOM drugs after a proper advanced brain scan will help. Who the fuck are you without memory? Yeah you may kill some depressing chemicals of the brain but with it a million healthy chemicals die, the cons out-way the pro's by a huge margin. Not to mention they put him to-sleep and make sure he hasn't eaten so it won't look as bad. It is just as worse as those horror TV SHOWS/MOVIES of actors acting out ECT. It is worse IRL because it's actually REAL, if he wasn't asleep he'd be shitting/pissing himself, crying and screaming in pain. Pain exists for a reason. It's how we know something is wrong.

I had 36 in 14 month time span and have retrograde amnesia that not only involves my childhood memories but the birth of 2 of my children. I also have balance issues, tinnitus, hearing loss. Cognitive deficits, and seizures. It sucks looking at pictures and not remember the events. I have a hard time reading a book or watching a movie or quilting which I was great at. I'm constantly having to make lists and if I dont do things in order I forget. I have hard time finding my car and on several occasions I have attempted to get in another car or not recognize my own. I'm 51 years old. What sucks is that the dr will tell you it's the illness and not ect while they will say theres a very slight risk. By the way I have bipolar 1 rapid cycling. My lability actually got worse as did my binge drinking that almost killed me. Proceed with caution.

I don't care if this helps or not. Inducing a seizure on somebody is stupid. As for shocking your heart during a heart attack that's actually saving your life getting your heart to beat again. What they are doing in this video clearly isn't a matter of life or death or anything near a heart attack. So don't be comparing it to a defibrillator.

Well, you might not be aware but a severe depression with suicidal thoughts is a life or death situation. ECT is only used when medication and other forms of therapy have failed and yes, it can be very effective. My dad used to be terribly depressed, he took up to 20 different anti depression pills. All those did were making him even number as he already had been. After the first ECT he saw something like hope and it got better with every session. Now he is completely healthy and back to be working a fulltime job and being a loving father.

I had some indeterminate amount of sessions of ECT after a second bout of Psychotic depression about 12 years ago.
It worked in the sense that it cured my depression. I did go from making suicide attempts to re-starting university in about 5 weeks however there was a price to pay. My memory was totally totally shot. It took me about 3 years to get back the 3 months preceeding the ECT therapy. In some ways that was a good thing. This therapy is basically a Brain reboot.

This is a demonstration, no actual shock was administered. The patient is an actor.. it even says it in the description. But other than that, you can clearly see the IV catheter is not actually in his hand, it's just taped on. Also, he swallows after the mouth guard is removed (you don't have voluntary movement of swallowing under anesthesia.

I suffered postpartum depression after my son was born last year, and I went through ECT for help with it. The treatment did help, but I just want to mention the side effects it can have.
You will experience memory loss, but only of events that are weeks prior to the treatments. You won’t forget childhood memories or anything like that. Part of the memory loss are some misfires when you mean to say something but you say something else. for example, I would mean to say something like “Door” but I would misfire and say “radio” not being able to remember the word door. It was embarrassing to say the least. But the memory loss passed after a couple of months. Everyone will react differently to ECT. In spite of memory loss, the treatment helped me and I am so grateful for it.

I'm bipolar and I am 72 and I have never had ECT since my illness started from the age of 16; ECT can trigger a mania - I have seen it happen - a young woman in a severe depressed phase of her bipolar illness was given ECT only once - that was because almost immediately she went into a manic phase and was doing the Highland fling to music - a Scottish dance - in the patient's lounge in the psychiatric ward I was on for 4 months many years ago.

I've gone through 8 of these treatments, more coming soon. It's not exactly like this but similar, yes. It has helped me a lot. I understand people are scared of it since it looks very radical, but it really isn't. It's simple and doesn't take long. I have some problems with my memory but they will go away. That's all. I highly recommend this to people battling with serious depression or any other serious mental health issue. It works.

My uncle used to get treated with the older version of ECT however since it has been banned now we are left with little to no option than to wait for his medications to take action. When using ECT he would recover after a few sessions but now with the heavy medications he is more like a walking zombie. His motor functions have deteriorated while he is in a semi conscious state most of the time now. I hope our mental hospital here procure or recieves a new version of ECT soon.

Some of the comments and opinions on this video are very insensitive. Yes ECT is not for everyone and should only be used when other treatments hav'nt worked. However, for some severe cases of depression it has proved very effective (atleast in the short term whilst medications are being altered etc) . My mum has suffered with depression all her life, in periods where she has been severely unwell this is the only thing that has worked and kept her alive.

I just recently was discharged from the hospital and my doctor convinced me to try ECT while I was there and ECT wasn’t helpful whatsoever. All it did was cause me to be really tired and to lose some of my memories and they weren’t even the bad ones. Then when I woke up from it my muscles were extremely sore and I was hysterical every time since I had completely forgotten every time where I was and what was happening. I wish I hadn’t signed the papers, personally.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a negative experience. If you don't mind me asking a few questions, have you tried Venlafaxine (Effexor), Wellbutrin (Bupropion), Gabapentin (Neurontin), or an Amphetamine salt like Adderall?
Most psychiatrists zero-in on Serotonin for depression, but Venlafaxine promotes Noradrenaline, Bupropion promotes Dopamine slowly, Gabapentin promotes G.A.B.A. for anxiety-based depression, and Amphetamine promotes Dopamine quickly.
Gabapentin and Amphetamine are off-label treatments for depression, but they have both been found effective in treatment-resistant depression. I hope and pray you find relief and healing from your pain and grief.
