    To the eye, it appears structural, but analyzing the circumstance from an expert's point of view would surprise many to find it's merely cosmetic.
    Is the stucco buckling or separating from your bottom wall cosmetic or structural?
    Hello, folks; as was said in this video, this is common for most homes.
    This home is tall and built on a hill.

    I began repairs after watching a few of Kirk's videos. When I ran into a few problems, Kirk personally walked me through the repairs. I had no prior contact with Kirk and was surprised how much time he took out of his family time to assist me. We traded phone calls, he viewed pictures of my issues and sent me supporting video links. You cannot ask for a more professional approach than what he provided. And to get this for free....priceless. Thanks Kirk, sorry for the late comment. Robert

      @@StuccoPlastering It's so great to see you still replying here in 2020! Do you have a video showing how to add a drip edge? My house has buckled stucco around the entire foundation, and I'm thinking of cutting it up and adding the drip edge but not sure if that's a good idea.

    I think all the clips I've seen are great. Have learned more than any other site I've visited. The only one thing I haven't been abel to clearly find out is exactly what the mixture and ratio is? Accelerators, rapid set, etc. are mentioned but in what mixture? This video, Repair buckling stucco is exactly what I need to do, now all I need is to know what to mix.

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morning Jim Witmer, we usually mix with three times as much sand VS cement plaster, unless I am applying mud , oops, cement plaster to ceilings, in which case will use only twice as much sand I want it sticky so it does not fall out too much as we're applying overhead.
      With the second coat you can add 3 to 4 times as much sand. The idea for a plasterer is to apply about 3/8 of an inch for the scratch then the same amount for the brown coat, an eigth more or less is not that big of a deal as many folks don't have the practice to apply 3/8 exactly, including myself.
      My brother mixes with a scoop shovel (big aluminum shovel), holds much more than the steel regular shovels. I think he measures with 12 scoops or with a regular shovel about 15 to 24, (real shovel's full) I don't hod carry any more, but you should get the idea,
      luminite accelerator takes about a handful per bucket to harden in about 15 minutes, this varies greatly with the age of the luminite.
      Other plastic cements materials you buy from hardware store like the rapid set you mentioned above, you just add water, NO SAND, always read the bags.

    I love how much you focus on the basics "how to", I avoid stucco as a general "can you?" But I've done some small patch work and your videos have been instrumental in my success of getting it right to match the original building/general stucco application. Not to mention an upcoming house project that will tie into a new stucco application, I can talk with the stucco person and coordinate my work with his understanding what he will be doing in relation to what I'm doing.

    I just saw a video of you not wanting to use your hammer. And using brains not bronze. It’s insightful watching you almost a decade ago using your hammer instead of a battery operated hammer drill. It might be a small portion of us plaster folk. But I’d be interested in you making a video of how and why you started posting on TH-cam. Great job master plaster!

      @StuccoPlastering  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Again it's an excellent question. We started doing videos as my son Jason suggested doing them.
      I said no at first as I didn't like to have pictures of myself being taken, let alone be filmed.
      However, some folks did not believe I knew how to plaster, and many were skeptical of my abilities.
      Thus, we did start to film how to apply stucco to simply show folks we knew what we were doing.
      It sort of caught on from there with thousands asking me questions and liking what we were doing, thus the beginning.🍾
      In answer to your question about using a hammer, sometimes I do use a hammer when I know it's faster than grabbing my battery or electric roto-hammer.
      plus, there was a basement in the back of this wall where the force of the hammer would not loosen or crack or disturb anything behind the wall. 😉

    Always educational videos, thanks! I really appreciate the slow methodical discussion explaining how you see this from your experience and expelling your strategy to fix it.
    At 5:30 or so you are talking about adherence, what determines whether stucco/mortar/cement will adhere to something or not?
    What determines if you need a scratch coat ... what is a scratch coat? Hope that's not too many questions.

    How would you know this crack won’t crack up again soon if it’s caused by foundation settling? Is the cause was the foundation then I would assume the true solution of such crack and future prevention should be resolved at its source- maybe a foundation repair? Then fixing the cracks? I’m asking because I bought a 60 year old house on slope. I see some cracks in the interior and many cracks exterior, from hairline cracks to more noticeable ones, all over the doors windows and bottom of the house too. A foundation repair guy told me there are slopes in the floorings and house has a constant slope but he just wouldn’t tell me if I need repair or not. It’s frustrating to have a professional who can’t seem to be confident and refuse to be responsible about a simple inspection. When I look at the cracks around the house, they scare me. Your videos help a lot. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good evening Zhuo dude, I dont know my repair won't crack or buckle or even that the whole house won't fall down.🤔
      I do know that in 1970 building codes required weep or drip screeds to be installed on new construction, we started using them about 1980, they are to give new homes an expansion joint so that all the weight does not push on the stucco.
      Anther fact I do also know is that years of rain will lift any and all homes then when dryer conditions occur the home will settle thus this type of buckling happens.
      The fact is that if one does not know the hows, whys of why walls crack let alone buckle, that person should not attempt to correct the damages.
      personally, this was a simple and very common problem with an easy solution. No matter how difficult it may have looked.

      Always important to do the detective work and find the perpetrator of the crime. Because of the location of the failure, it seems that the movement has happened between the exterior wall and the foundation, due to some exterior cause or just natural temperature expansion and contraction. After Kirk's repair as shown, a horizontal line could be cut where the foundation meets the upper wall and filled with a flexible and paintable caulking to camouflage the line as much as possible, but would provide some movement between the two sections. This horizontal line would have to be extended across the whole width of the wall to maintain a uniform appearance.

    You make it look so easy! I have a 35-yr-old stucco house in the high desert, flat roof with parapet, that was apparently re-coated at least once. It cracked in many placed, from window corners, on block walls, in the middle of large panels. So the contractor pushed adding new wire and new base/color coat over that whole original system. Within 5 yrs, it cracked in about the same places. I am thinking now that my best bet is to pull it down to the framing and have it re-done from scratch. New wire, everything. For one thing, the stucco is flush or even past the window frames (aluminum windows). I would appreciate your thoughts?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ross, you may not like my answer, but here goes, It matters little if there is wire or not, if the foundation continues to settle no amount of caulking, wire and or thickness of stucco will stop the settling which causes cracking.

    A scratch coat is a first coat, which should be applied and let to cure for 48 hours before you apply your next coat. My videos show a lot of same day scratch and brown coats but I have 30 years in this trade.

      White vinegar may neutralize mold, or acid in the paint or but wont do anything for buckling stucco. Buckling stucco occurs because of vibrations and settling of homes.

    I have an 89 year old stucco house I’m buying. It’s got major foundation issues. The former owners never put up rain gutters. So do you think all the years of rainfall on the base of the house caused the cracks in the stucco plus the foundation issues? Or something else?

    Dear Kirk I cannot tell you how relieved I am to find a TH-cam video that relates to this problem I have along one side of my 1925 baby craftsman bungalow in Chico, Butte County. Of course when I got the house four years ago they had re-stuccoed and textured it I think was a secret problem.I’m very disappointed that the inspector did not indicate this seam in the report I kind of feel like the inspectors the owners and the realtors colluded to do a very minimized report when in fact I think this buckling was just barely hidden…or maybe they felt it was repaired adequately-- and 2 years later Kapow -I’d say different areas of this type of damage about 20 feet long - But it may be that this happens in a old house when you have new stucco on top of old lathe.
    It is very difficult to find service people for individual homes out here in Chico. The campfire and Covid have changed the landscape of a lot of businesses… The people who seem to get good service agreements are people who owns several homes and buildings and rent them big apartment buildings and somehow the realtors all seem to be able to get service people. But be an older female individual homeowner in a cute little home and dang it is impossible to even get gutter service things have been really challenging. I have a guy who does a little bit of everything and he’s willing to try to do it but after watching your video I see the stucco needs to be gently removed there needs to be a weep screen at the bottom and it takes a lot of skill to understand with the right mixes and to float it and apply it and texture it I’m not really sure even with a willing handy person … I feel like I should look for a place that does plaster and stucco repair. Why am I writing you besides that I’m really excited that I found some videos that are relating to my specific problem… Is is there a possibility you could hook me up with a business in Chico or near Chico who can do this kind of work and will come give me an estimate. I’m not planning on selling it soon so it’s not an emergency… But it it irks me it irks me a lot. For a while my gutters were overflowing and wet onto the driveway and I believe that added to the sinking and buckling now I’ve dealt with that somewhat by putting in better drain spouts and gutter guards and whatever kind of above ground drainage I can put in And the walls not gonna be getting the same amount of water that might contribute to what just has to do with an aging house. I know you’re probably busy my guess is you’re with your daughters and all her kids and the entire family having a before school starts family vacation in Hawaii! But honestly you just seemed like a charming generous human being who believes that sharing information makes everybody better. I look forward to your suggestion what kind of professionals I need to look for and if you know anybody in this area who might be interested in this work. Nowadays I’m so concerned with gas cost that I always offer to pay for the gas in the vehicle in addition to the cost of the job. Thank you so much for your time and anybody who gives me feedback about this thank you

    My stucco guy used concrete to patch and used way too much and it is bulged out and rough. He said he can't level it out. You can also see the seams between the old and new. It looks sooo bad. How do I remove the dried excess concrete?

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Howdy Laura Castel, you can use a hammer, chisel, grinder and such tools, but the easiest fix would be to call the falla back, show him the "dried or cured results" of his efforts, we all make mistakes as I have too in the past, allow his conscious to make the right decision.
      More than likely he will agree and repair, if he does not know the results of his work, it will be the old, "out of sight and out of mind,"
      The fact is you would be doing him a favor by having him look at his results, that how all of us learn to be the best we can, try it, he may thank you.
      If this does not work have your husband beat the crap out of him :-), as some folks learn the hard way :-)

    Thanks for the video. Had some plumbing done on the outside wall, stucco needs to be patched between wall studs. Can I use OSB board? Then lay my barrier paper, and apply new wire mesh since I can tie it to the old mesh

      Evening Woppini carpro, sure you can but if it were me I'd use real plywood, not glued together pats of wood chips.
      best wishes,

      Hi Vlad, whatever buckets we have available we use.
      In this video, we're using quikrete stucco mixed with sand.
