Evelyn I'm so delighted I found your videos. I was only looking for what beginners must have to start sewing. But after watching ur video I really appreciated your love and passion for what you do. And that inspires me to look more into maybe doing my own clothes one day. I really dislike how skirts are to long, they don't have enough space for my behind etc, so your enthusiasm made me think want if I could make my own skirts 🤔. I'm so excited!! Thank you again for sharing your passion with us.
I totally agree with you, Evelyn. We don't need a lot of clothes. We need to have some wonderfully, lovingly fashioned things that are originally constructed by ourselves. I am also super jazzed about learning proper mending from you. I really need to learn to darn socks.
Eeee!!!! I will start this in the new year, after the craziness of christmas is over. As a larger woman, with menopause being able to adjust and refashion my clothes to something that fits, looks good, and lets me stay cool so I don't have power surge to death - I'm up for it. Also - you had me at learning to thread my machine. (I've been sewing by hand because I couldn't work out how to do that).
I used to sew everything by hand because I didn't have a sewing machine. I did it on and off since I was 7 or 8 year old, for my dolls; then as a teenager, I sew simple blouses with wide sleeves like bells (2000's makes 70's); then, as a mother, costumes (you know, Cinderella, Merida, Snow White, Ariel, etc.) as well as some gifts for nieces and nephews. They were very well recieved because they were handmade. I felt so silly and poor, but those where made with so much love and care and detail that family always felt so special because of it. Then, at 35 or so, I finally got my machine! I was so excited, I looked for tutorials about how it worked, even before it arrived! Then, it was so weird. It ran so fast that it looked like I was racing against it for the fabric! Hahahaha! I felt like it was just too difficult and that I would end up giving up on it. But I kept going and little by little I got better. Now I wish I had more time and energy to sew more often. You'll see you getting better, you'll see. Keep going and enjoy those moments where you accomplish a nice hem, a perfect dart, or a simple straight line. When you get to where you want to be, you'll fell like you conquered the world!!
How to thread your machine should be in your sewing machine manual. If you can no longer find your original manual, most sewing machine companies have all of their past manuals online now. I recently got a copy of one for one of my machines made in the early 60s.
@@joannecarroll5504 Even following the manual's explanation of how to thread my machine did not work. Either they skipped things they thought everyone understood (and therefore didn't need to say) or I simply couldn't understand what they meant, it took a friend of mine to show me how to get the bobbin thread up above the plate. (I had assumed it was up to me to somehow thread the thread up from the bobbin. AS hard as I tried, I simply could not do that. I had no idea the needle would pull it up as I tuned the hand wheel.)
I'm 51 & I've been sewing since before I was old enough for school. I love sewing, the whole creative subject, but I hated how some people saw sewing as just repairs & beneath them, so I stopped sewing for others. IMHO it's a basic life skill that everyone should learn; like boiling an egg, swapping a light bulb or changing a tyre. My mother didn't sew either, so it's not something you have to have handed down, you *can* learn & each step is easily learned. My 25yo split his pants at work recently & he took such pride in telling me how he'd patched them up in the store-room & it was a much easier task than he'd thought. I agreed & said it is a skill that he will continue to find useful. While doing laundry, I noticed his hems had also fallen down & been trampled, so once laundered, I told him to iron the wrinkles out of the hems & I'd teach him invisible hemming. It took only a few demonstration stitches before he took over, repairing them himself & that achievement was surprisingly positive for his self-esteem. You should learn too. Good luck!
You said that so well. I began sewing when I was young. My mother showed me how to make doll clothes. My projects looked terrible next to hers but I kept trying. In school I learned how to make a skirt, install a zipper, etc. Since then I have continued to increase skills . Now I am old and still learning. This was a very important discussion. Thank you.
I Love watching you and your enthusiasm. I can't afford the vintage sewing class but I'm still going to keep up to date with your other videos. I Love to sew and upcycle, and I get a lot out of your content. Thank You for such quality information.
I love this sewing school, i have learned so much from Evelyn she is a fabulous tutor. I love vintage style clothes and i am a large lady. Evelyns tutorials help me a lot. And best of all, the classes are there for ever to refer to when ever needed.
Yay Robyn!! 😍 Thank you so much for your kind comment! It is an pleasure having you in the school and it wouldn't have been the same without you over the last month! I'm so glad your loving ease of the lessons always being there! I'm just about to start working on next months!! xxxx
Dear Evelyn what exciting news now there will be even more lovely people to sew with. This past month I the sewing school has given me the legitimization to learn at my pace and practice without falling behind! The group of “cheerleaders “ sewing together is addictive and you are at the helm, always encouraging and opening up my eyes to knew ways of looking at things. There is so much to learn and the instructions are so clear and available 24/7 , thanks so much for opening your lovely heart and phenomenal skill to us. By the way I watched that documentary “true cost” and I’m still sitting here with tears in my eyes., what a rude awakening. Welcome to all from Jerusalem,Israel 🤗
Awww Nikki ❤😭❤ It means the world to me to have as a member and has been a privilege to see your progress already and your enthuiasm in the community is contagious! Just imagine where your sewing will be in 6 months!! I can't wait to see all your future creations! ❤❤
This sounds like a brilliant idea. I've been sewing for a few years now, but haven't made much. I have lots of ideas, but don't seem to be able to get started, just find excuses not to sew. It sounds like this would help provide some motivation and some accountability to myself.
Yes it would Kerry!! That is one of the things I wanted to provide in the school ( for those that want it) is a way to stay accountable to yourself and give you a push to keep yourself on track! xx
You have such noble thoughts! Yes,we really don't need so much.Ninety percent of my daily wear clothes are cotton and after watching your inspiring videos, I will try stitching a dress someday. As of now it's Kurtis ( Indian wear)
@@Evelyn__Wood exactly! And having to hunt and search for individual skills (and knowing what they are called in order to be able to search) doesn't work. I want to be able to make my own clothes and to upcycle. But so far, all the videos I have watched are not helping.
I know, looking for things is hard, and when you don't know what to search for 😲 That's why I started vintagesewingschool.com everything is there, in the order you need, when you need it! If you want the extra support and help on your sewing journey, I'd love to have you in class! 😄
OMG I am sooooo interested in all of these things! I actually find it difficult to find good sewing classes that actually correspond to what I want to learn and that are not just ok here is how you do a skirt, here is how you do a dress, etc., etc. A community of sewists available almost 24/7 is exactly what I was looking for. I still have to get through christmas craziness but I am pretty sure I will be subscribing in the new year. Thanks you so much Evelyn to make your knowledge available to all the world (talking to you here from Montreal Canada so it is litterally the other side of the world haha).
Yay Vanessa!!! 😀 Yes I think this style will definitely suit you by the sounds of that!! I world love to have you in class! If you have questions just let me know! ❤
I loved the "make do and mend" approach that was so important during the war years. As you have already stated, reusing and refashioning has been around for hundreds of years, and every garment you refashion is one less item going to landfill.
I realize you posted this a couple of years ago but I just LOVE how you teach. I have been sewing since I was 11 (I'm almost 68). But I want to get better. For the last 15-20 years I have been cleaning houses and caregiving an elderly woman. With COPD emphysema and heart problems it is getting more difficult to do the work I do. So I'm thinking ahead of maybe making garments for people or alterations. ..that sort of thing!!! This is funny! Literally the day I signed up for your sewing school August 2021 I got a message from my daughter's friend asking if she could hire me to put pockets in her ready made dress. I said, "yes!" I'm looking forward to this journey with you. I'm learning to smile (as you do) when I sew and enjoy every part of it! READY, SET, SEW!!!!
Oh I am glad about what you said about pattern. Where I am from still do not have patterns. Seamstress work with body measurements. But here in UK sewing means pattern for most people.
I've moved over to having clothes of more natural fibres in my wardrobe (loving the merino wool right now!) but it seems that now I have to worry more about moths... so darning holes would be something I'm super interested in
I had assumed it was all about clothing and am delighted to find out I was wrong. It's good news that it is sewing overall, not just about sewing garments. Thank you, Evelyn.
How wonderful Evelyn, I did your free course and loved it. Just back on line and thrilled that you have now started your vintage sewing school. Just off to join now. Thank you
Yay Louise!! That's exciting! I'm thrilled to have you in class, and if you thought the free class was good.... just wait until you become a member!! 😄
Darn, this sounds like a class I would like to do but I've already singed up for two classes at my local community college. Best of success on your new endeavor! Blessings Sidney
Evelyn, this is incredible what you are doing. Teaching people how to sew and the art of garment construction. Sewing was once the foundation of homes, families and society in the U.S. and aboard then things changed. Women began to feel sewing was too domestic and therefore beneath them. A downward spiral resulting from the Women's Right Movement only to be exacerbated with the closing of many textile factories and companies. My mother taught me how to sew when I was a girl and one of the things instilled was sewing could not just be used to make your own clothes, but also as a way to make income. I have had people actually say to me, "You sew?!" like it is something incredibly foreign, some old pastime. Others when they see what I am wearing or discover I sew are astonished. I adore vintage clothing, but I also adore making my own clothes; vintage and modern. Thank you for keeping this skill alive to be passed on to the next generation of seamstresses and designers.
I'm excited to learn more about this! Vintage sewing techniques is something we all need to learn. From different ways to sew, history lessons, this is going to make our lives more colorful, valuable. Thank you for your vision...
I’ve made a couple of blouses, one with woven fabric(quilting yardage I already had),one with knit fabric. I have a close friend who helped me through the process. I still think I need ‘adult supervision’-LOLs!!
Oh, if I just had more time!!! I am finishing a sweater refashion right now, but would love to be part of the community.....sewing is my creative outlet! Oh, and I have only made 3 things using a pattern, it always seem like a lot longer way than refashioning. I only machine sew when necessary, hand sewing during a movie with my sweet hubby is the best of both worlds! Happy times, remind me of mending/sewing and shopping/looking with my grandmother! We would go to antique stores and peek inside and feel all the garments to see how they were made or go to high end stores and do the same thing, then go to thrift stores and get something to refashion. I can still feel cashmere without a label and I am warm and comfy while keeping in budget and out of landfills. Keep up all your great work, wish I could join up!
Anne I like your idea of hand sewing over a movie with your hubby, as you say, best of both worlds! You can do as much or as little as you like, the community inside is really amazing! Such encouragement in there! ❤
Hi Evelyn, lve your videos! I've wanted to make clothes my whole life but never did. Last year I acquired my first sewing machine and am learning to sew via an online school. The school only provides books as learning support so I love your videos! Thanks!
As a super plus sized woman, everything I try to make starts with a leap in the dark to resize patterns or refashion existing clothing to fit. Help! My goals are to learn to scale up patterns and fit myself properly.
Your vest is adorable! Sewing is definitely a life skill. From rescuing a button to taking up a hem to refashioning an existing garment into something new, it's a craft I'm happy I got into this year. I'm looking into some projects I want to make in the new year and grow my know-how, specifically dresses and skirts. I'll be looking into your school, though I think I'm a bit dependent on having someone by me as I sew.
How great you got into it just this year!! And its always far easier to learn with some one by your side, off line or online! Id love to have you in class so let me k ow if you have any questions about it! x
I am brand new here to your page. I live your creativity. I just got a vintage sewing machine. Exactally like the one I bought in 1976- only so much ni c er! I have a project I am thinking m g about. Eithout spending a dime...I want to use a soft vintage shawl - my hubby bought me in Isreal and turn it into a simple book skirt with a fringed hemline. Only thing I will need to create are seam pockets. No problem, right. This skirt should end up * not too full but not too tight. It should be plenty long. I am hopeful. I think I will wear this alot more than the shawl route. Wish me luck.
A thankyou!!! Vintage Sewing School can certainly help you know what to do with that machine! It's perfect for very beginners, I'd live to have you in class!
O.MG!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE been sewing since I was younger than 8! My skills with a pattern are pretty good. However I NEED to have help with my re purposing the garments I have. I have been losing a lot of weight and NEED to repurpose my existing wardrobe. Loliking for help with confidence with those skills.
Well that is good news as the school is alreafy filled with that content!! You can learn how to make alterations to fit ready made garments, and refashions 😄 I'd live to have you in class, if you have any questions just let me know!! ❤
😄 Let's celebrate this new and improved version of Vintage Sewing School, take a look here www.vintagesewingschool.com .let me know if your excited and leave me a comment on what sewing skills you want to improve on in 2020? X
What timing! I've decided to finally take up vintage sewing (starting with 19th century undergarments) and just found your channel. I'm sure you can teach me so much. I'm excited!
I’m trying to stop shopping as much and making my own clothing, I want to become a better sewer! I’m working on a quilting and sewing more for my kids and myself.
that explains a lot about the ongoing war between me and patterns. I wear a size 22 but I have a 24 inch inseam and my waist is located somewhere around the sleeve on the patterns. I use the old try it on. pin it up. cut it down repeat about eleventeen times until it's "close enough".
This is my Christmas present to myself this year! I can't wait to start it. I love 50s dresses (I think its Rockabilly now?) but I bought a sewing machine about a year and a half ago and my stepmother taught me how make curtains when she came to visit me this past summer and I really enjoy sewing and have been watching your videos for a little bit now. I am SO EXCITED FOR YOU EVELYN and can't wait to learn more!
Yay!! Melissa that is the best idea to gift yourself membership for Christmas!! What a great way to start the new year too, I'm so excited for you and can't wait to see what you create! I look forward to chatting with you in the school community! x
@@Evelyn__Wood I am so excited!! I have already learned a lot from watching your videos and can't wait to learn more and actually put it into practice. I am also really excited to chat with you all and learn more from each other this coming year.
Wow! I am so excited! This is fantastic! Now I don’t have to move to Australia to learn from you! I actually threatened my husband with that after seeing your fashion show. I am highly passionate about conservation and refashioning, as a matter of fact it has been over ten years since I last bought anything other than underthings new. Tell me, why is it some ladies will keep mascara around for years and buy a new top every week? I am so glad you have set your sights on helping us all. I so hope it may be affordable.
😂😂😂 Susan Ioooove you threatened to move! But luckily you don't have to now! You can come to class anytime, and far more affordable than a plan ticket 🤣 I'd love to have you, if you have any questions email me at info@evelynwood.com.au ❤
I’m really excited about this. I’m hoping to learn how to mend items as well as make them. I so often see clothing that I feel I would enjoy if I could just fix it in one way or another but just don’t possess the skills to do it. My mother knows how to sew and it is one of my deepest regrets that I never took time to learn from her. Looking forward to this..
YAY!!!! I'm so excited!! I change and fix almost everything I get! Personalizing your clothing is everything! I would love to have you in class I think it will be just right for you! If you have any questions let me know, otherwise I hope to see you in the school community soon!! 😍
This sounds interesting, though for me shirt making would be much more useful than dress making. I do enjoy learning vintage skills, and using vintage things. I mow my yard with a scythe, write with fountain pens, and have done a little weaving. A few years ago I took an intro to blacksmithing class and made a three hook wall rack with a hammer, anvil, and coal forge. A while back I started collecting vintage sewing machines, even though I didn't sew. I intended to learn to repair them, which I haven't gotten around to yet. I do have a couple of functional vintage machines, and one modern industrial machine. Modern domestic machines have too much plastic in them for my taste. Looking for things to use them for, I've done a little bit of quilt block piecing. But it's too hot for quilts in Texas most of the year. Learning to make shirts that fit me well would be a very helpful skill. With my odd proportions, I never find shirts off the rack that fit me well all over.
This sounds like everything I've been looking for! I've been teaching myself about pattern adjustments and in 2020 I'm planning to learn how to do a full bust adjustment because that's one of the issues I always have with ready to wear clothing🙄 What a wonderful idea!♥️
Wonderful Kayla!! I'm so excited! I love you already have goals in place too! I would be so thrilled to have you in the school! We will be taking on this kind of pattern adjusting, one step at a time! Let me know if you have any questions otherwise I hope to see you in class soon! x
I am so happy that I joined the VSS. The past month has been so incredibly exciting and I’ve learned so much so far. I am very new to sewing, but I wanted to up my game, especially in the vintage department (pun not intended 😊). Evelyn has created a wonderful system for this, with different videos that teach you the basics, different skills that will help in many projects, and, my personal favorite, refashioning thrifted pieces to create something new and personalized. It’s so exciting discussing our projects with other members as well to get feedback. I know Evelyn has many more ideas up her sleeve for this school, so I’m looking forward to all the other exciting things to come! If you have any inclination to join, you should! I’m loving it!
Aww Karrie 😭😍😭 Thankyou for joining me so early and your kind words, it wouldn't have been the same without you in there! I'm so humbled that you have already been able to up your sewing game! I'm looking forward to taking it even further in the new year!! ❤
Twist my arm, Evelyn! Lol! Yes this is very cool and after Christmas I think you'll have me as a student! Besides, the Peeps already there are having a great time!
Evelyn!!! I love your passion, it’s incredibly amazing and inspiring beyond my wildest dreams. I do plan to join after these holidays are over. For the meantime, do stay passionate, I think you are on the right track and your ideas are great. I saw the pattern you displayed and would love to see more 1930 gown creations. Do stay true to yourself for we are definitely like minded!!! 👗✂️👗
Yay!!! Mary I would love to have you in class!! I know, launching just before the holidays was maybe not the best timing... but I couldn't wait! If you have any questions let me know, other wise I look forward to see you in the school community soon! xxxx
Wow ! This is exactly what i'm looking for;) I had bad experience in looking for someone to learn to sew. I was in a course where the teacher refused to take my measurements for the pattern. She said it was 'standard', it was not, it as x-large on me. Looking to join in 2020 ;)))
Oh that's not a great first experience 😐 but good news for me! I'd love to have you in class! Take a look at the website and if you have any questions about it just let me know! 😃
Squeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!! 😀😍🎉🎊 Evelyn I'm doing a little happy dance for you right now!! I'm so excited!! I cant wait to see you inside the community! Don't forget to introduce yourself in there when you get a chance! I know everyone will love to 'meet' you too! Your sewing game is about to increased 10 fold!! xx
I just found you and immediately subscribed! I love vintage clothing! Almost all my clothes is from charity shops and I'm always altering things. I love period clothing too and I'm about to start getting more into that. Patterns have always eluded me and I'm hoping to get my head around it eventually, but in the meantime I'm concentrating on studying existing garments/clothing items that I can alter and adapt. Looking forward to your videos.😇
Really enjoyed you course on making the bag so can not wait to learn more in the new year when I enrol. Learning how to adjust clothes/patterns to fit me will be amazing as I would love to wear a dress as currently I am unable to because I am about 2 sizes bigger on my bust to my waist lol. I really need to learn how to measure myself correctly. In the course will you be showing how to create the basic blouse / skirt blocks for our own measurements and how to more darts etc to make different styles or will this be something for future courses.
Its definetly something I will be making I the future! There's alot of beginner content to do first veggie we get to advanced patrern making! 😄 I'm excited to have you in!!
Absolutely!! You can start at the level your at, the full Crash Course as a member is everything you need to get stated with your machine and sewing fabric, then we go from there!
So agree with a pattern just being a tool. It sometimes really annoys me when people moan about pattern instructions not spelling out every little detail. Once you have learned the skills, you can apply them to any sewing project. I think good drafting is so much more important. Give me the suggested order of construction and only details if there are unusual design details. Apperently that’s oldfashioned or as you now labled it vintage. Let me shout out with you: It’s liberating!
This is something i have wanted for a long time, Evelyn. I lost significant weight this year, and now the neckline and arms-eyes of tops are too big, lengths too long...but I do not have the funds to purchase a whole new wardrobe. I love vintage clothes, and I am nearly at a size I will fit into them! Will you be covering what to do with modern knits, dear lady?
A few littke tweeks here and there and your wardrobe can fit again! Eventually yes! Every month is new lessons on a variety of topics, so dealing with knitwear will be in there at some point!
I joining up! One thing I would love to learn is how to draft a pattern from a item of clothing that is still being worn. My 25 year old daughter HATES shopping and her clothes are literally fading away but there is really only one style of dress that she likes to wear. I've bought fabric to make this dress for her many times over, with different necks etc (I can do that adjustment) but she won't let me unpick the dress. Could you please, please, please do a session on this?
You don't need to unpick, just iron it & use a serrated tracing wheel to trace/pinprick the outlines of each garment piece onto paper. Then join the pinprick dots with a pencil, add your seam allowance around the shapes & cut. You now have a pattern.
Yes Joanne has the basic principle there, if you can change up the necklines I think you'll be able to trace around the pieces and put them together! It is something I am sure that will get covered in the school at some point, as everyone has that one item you just love right!
As a medical student I tend to cringe really hard when I see untidy sutures. Not to mention that I use a lot of suture knots to finish off my thread! Big huray for sewing!
@@Evelyn__Wood sort of, it is just really difficult for me to not try to "restich" when my stitch is not having the perfect "seam allowance" or stitch length 😅
@@luciatat4084 it is weirdly smooth. Like it stretches weird but its not thought to sew through like leather because the needles are very sharp. Sometimes though it's kind of tough to sew through on some patches and you really have to like really force it. It's also so elastic, like when you knot off the suture the skin stretches and the small holes stretch and the skin needs to bunch a little bit to make sure it touches to heal. And it needs to align right and not bunch on either side or overlap which can be hard sometimes when there is a very stretchy patch of skin or when the skin has been undermined from the tissue below. But overall once you have some practice you will easily get the hang of it especially when you have to grab the needle with forceps eg pliers, tongues, tweezers etc but they help make knots by wrapping the thread against the shank part. Sometimes your own hands get a bit in the way😅
I'm so excited about this & so happy for you. I love the mission of your business & your school. I've been wanting to learn how to tweak patterns to fit me perfectly. Also I'd love to be more comfortable knowing which clothing to choose from a second hand shop to turn into something fun to wear. Congrats, Evelyn!
Awww thank you so much!! And thank you for support! In the school I already have lessons on the shopping at the thrift store part! And pattern adjusting is set for a little each month! If your interested in joining just let me know! x
@@Evelyn__Wood I am & I have checked out the website! I want to wait for my schedule to clear so I actually have time to focus on sewing more. We have a slow season coming up in our little tourist town. Should be perfect for this!
Congratulations Evelyn! 🥳 I watched this video when you just announced it and was meant to leave a comment and let you know: It’s such a brilliant idea to create this! Like you I believe sewing is a life skill that is sadly lost and I’m working on also spreading the knowledge of sewing, mending and so on. Do you think more experienced sewists like me also would enjoy it? ☺️
Aww thank you!!! Miss Matti it depends on what you want to learn, but yes! I have students just starting and some that have been sewing longer than I have been alive! If you want a community aspect, with Q&A opportunities each month and challenges to keep yourself accountable and on track for what it is you want to learn, than yes! The current lessons you can access straight away are based around refashioning and altering ready to wear, so if you need help with that, yes! The new lessons each month will be about mending, getting more professional finishes using pattern and how to make toiles and fit them on yourself and make those changes to the patterns... So if these things are sounding exciting it might just be fore you! You can cancel anytime if its not for you too. If you have any other questions let me know! xxx
I’m starting from 0 and I need to learn how to do anything in my mind is that including in the course ((do my own pattern)) ? Or my dream is so high 🤣🤣
I'd love to join. I'm a professional "Sewer" - I made a 2 year industrial sewing and business class at a community college. But I'd love to learn more. I see sewing as a skill that develops over a lifetime. Sadly I don't have a credit card (it's not really common to have one under a certain yearly income in Germany). Is there a chance you'll add more paying methods to the websites in the future?
Hi! Oh I totally agree and there is no end to learning!! Yes at the moment it is credit/debit card only. I will set up PayPal in the future, it just requires a lot of back end tech to set up, and I'm just not quite there yet! Soon! xx
I didn’t see this question on your school’s website Q&A: is there a list of items provided we’d have to purchase before each class? Is each class singular project based or a continuous project built over the course of the classes?
Hi! VSS is a little different then most! VSS is skills based. So It really focus on teaching all the skills of sewing and garment making. Our workshops and projects are designed to facilitate the learning of the skills. So, we have entire courses on subjects like everything about your machine, needles, basic sewing, learning about fabrics and how to pick them and use them, reading and understanding patterns, measuring the pattern for size, grainlines, types of stitches, hande sewing, and then we look at each sewing skill such a s zips, , sewing piping, etc... You learn these skills so you can pick up any pattern, and refashion, and be able to work your magic! And then we have the workshops, which are the projects. These projects are designed mostly to practice the skills you are learning in the other lessons. Each project has details of what you need to compete it! I hope that explains it for you. If you have any further questions just email me at info@evelynwood.com.au 😊
Oh my! I always thought i could sew, but recently I've been trying my hand at 30s patterns, and some of them have instructions that i i either don't have the terminology for, or that that just don't make sense to me. I'll think i get it, and then find myself thinking, no that can't be right... And then too I'll be switching to a treadle machine at some point and i'm wondering whether there's anything I should know about those...
Good question! All the principles of sewing are the same for either, it's the same skills used, just different fitting on bodies (obviously) and some finishes tend to suit menswear better than womens wear. But as long as you can see the difference yourself, you can just use the skills you learn and translate it to menswear, as you would interpret those skills to achieve any personal style you want to create! (as everything is shown on women's wear, but all dresses!) If you have any other questions feel free to email at info@evelynwood.com.au I think you will still find the school very useful! 😀
I’m new to you but I love your TH-cam and want to join your school and I see your very active with your communication so I was just wondering like in your school before I start do you learn litterally everything down to sketching like can you be more detailed or is that on the website
Hi Evelyn! I’m so excited about this for you!! I found your channel a couple of months ago now and I’ve been watching obsessively! My mom is even giving me her old sewing machine for Christmas since she upgraded when she started her embroidery business! I’d love to participate in vintage sewing school - it sounds *just* like the sort of thing I would enjoy and really learn well from!! But I’m a total (and currently a little hopeless) beginner. Do you think I would be able to follow along and actually get started this way? Or would you suggest I go through the crash course you have up on TH-cam first? Thanks in advance for your time and for making us so much great content!!
Yay Lilith!! 😄😄 Yes it's perfect for absolute beginners! I'm so excited to have you in class!! Join up and I start you right at begining, the first lessons are all on how to use your machine, sew fabric, trouble shooting ect, it's just what you will need with your new machine! If you have any other questions let me know! 😄
You had me at “we don’t need more stuff “. That’s where I’ve been the last few years. 👍🏻
I absolutely agree!
I am very happy that you have achieved this place in your life! I'm still working towards mine.
I totally agree with you, Evelyn. We don't need a lot of clothes. We need to have some wonderfully, lovingly fashioned things that are originally constructed by ourselves. I am also super jazzed about learning proper mending from you. I really need to learn to darn socks.
Wonderful!!! Oh every Monday there's a socks featured under #MONDAYMENDING 🤣🤣 everyone is mending socks!
Oh my all by hand! 🤤 Yes come and join and I will help you with more than just that!! ❤
Good luck!
Awww that is wonderful! I love that he is so enthusiastic about learning!!
Getting into sewing, and I absolutely love Evelyn's energy and passion.
Aww thankyou Deanna! I'll still be here making videos too! ❤
Your unique style and approach is so beautiful and uplifting.
I love all your sewing videos. They teach me so much.
I'm so excited for this course!
Thank you so much for starting this series! These are the exact skills that I have been wanting and not getting.
Yay!! I'm glad to hear that!! I think there is alot missing from home sewing these days that can really up level your skills! 😄
I think this is the case most everywhere!
Oh darn indeed! Having different perspectives and styles of teaching is always a good thing!!
Aww thankyou!! It is funny how being able to have the skill making clothing is so foreign to some! But not for us!! I see a home sewing renaissance ❤
@@Evelyn__Wood, I see a home sewing Renaissance as well. Let's keep spreading the word.
Yes!! ❤
Thanks!
How exciting and congratulations. I already know the basics of sewing but lack many skills too. I will go and check it all out!!
Wonderful!! Let me know what you think and if you have any question let me know!! ❤
Looking forward to joining the class soon. Just have another course to finish first.
As a super plus sized woman, everything I try to make starts with a leap in the dark to resize patterns or refashion existing clothing to fit. Help! My goals are to learn to scale up patterns and fit myself properly.
That's a great goal! We are starting lessons on using patterns next month! Upsizing something we will cover in the school! ❤
Brilliant, even better than a TV show.
😂😂 Well that's good news! There were ALOT of guesses for TV show!
😍💕 Congratulations!!!!!
Thankyou so much!!
Thank you so much for helping us to learn how to sew I'm a beginner but I have a sewing machine and all the goodies that came with it. 👍♥️💋👏👏👏💜🤗🌹
Yes! Sewing and other crafts are more than following a pattern or description. I rarely use those things
I think so!!
Yes! Yes! Yes! There’s great need for that kind of knowledge. Thank you! Looking forward to learning from you.
Wonderful!! I'd be so thrilled to have you in class!! 😀
I"m going to do the trial, but it really looks promising. Thank you for explaining. I'm excited!
I’m trying to stop shopping as much and making my own clothing, I want to become a better sewer! I’m working on a quilting and sewing more for my kids and myself.
That is a wonderful change to make!! ❤❤
Brilliant idea. It turned out beautifully.
that explains a lot about the ongoing war between me and patterns. I wear a size 22 but I have a 24 inch inseam and my waist is located somewhere around the sleeve on the patterns. I use the old try it on. pin it up. cut it down repeat about eleventeen times until it's "close enough".
🤣🤣🤣 You can make the adjustment to the pattern , save yourself the work next time 😉
This is my Christmas present to myself this year!

I love making costumes starting with thrift store ( charity shop) items .including sheets! Cheap way yo make curtains or lining
Congratulations 🥳
Thankyou so much!!!! 😚😚
I adore the outfit you have on!
Going to be Fun hobby to Learn!
I am just Learning thank you
How exciting!
This sounds perfect! I’m in the middle of a major home remodel but will sign up soon!!
Wonderful!!!! I'm excited to have you in class!!
Just joined. SOOOOOOOO EXCITED!
Yaaaaaayyyyy 🎉🎉🎉 Leeanne I'm so excited for you!! Thankyou! I can't wait to start with you inside! ❤
Congrats!!
Let me know if you have any questions otherwise I hope to see you in class soon! x
Love the outfit your wearing
Thankyou! Refashion 😉
How much is it to join the Vintage Sewing School please?
Oh this is so exciting! Hopefully life slows down soon so I can join!
😄😄 I'd love to have you in class!! You can do as much or as little as fits in your schedual! It's all at your own pace! I'd to have you in class! X
Evelyn can you please share how you made those gorgeous bow head confections. Gorgeous!
Twist my arm, Evelyn! Lol! Yes this is very cool and after Christmas I think you'll have me as a student! Besides, the Peeps already there are having a great time!
YAY!! Yes we are already having a great time!!!! I would love to have you in!! If you have any questions just ask! 😀
I just joined and am so excited!!
Thanks for subscribing!!
I like to use different pieces of patterns and make Frankenstein outfits that actually look good
I laugh at the term 'frankenpattern' 😂 But, that's totally a thing and how it's done sometimes! So your on the right track! ❤
Is vintage sewing school for someone who's never sewed or hasn't sewed anything since high school nearly 30 years ago?
Absolutely!! You can start at the level your at, the full Crash Course as a member is everything you need to get stated with your machine and sewing fabric, then we go from there!
Lovely site and i hope to join whenever i have the money to.
Thankyou!! I would love to have you in any time!!❤
So agree with a pattern just being a tool.
Absolutely!! 😄😄😄
😃 wonderful
This is something i have wanted for a long time, Evelyn. I lost significant weight this year, and now the neckline and arms-eyes of tops are too big, lengths too long...but I do not have the funds to purchase a whole new wardrobe. I love vintage clothes, and I am nearly at a size I will fit into them!
Will you be covering what to do with modern knits, dear lady?
A few littke tweeks here and there and your wardrobe can fit again! Eventually yes! Every month is new lessons on a variety of topics, so dealing with knitwear will be in there at some point!
Ooooh! Sounds so exciting! 2020: A Sewing Odyssey!
Now I looove this Anna!!😆
YAY!! Perfect!
Robin yay!! I'm glad your excited!! 😚
Yay i found your school.
@@joannecarroll5504 Thank you!
😄😄 I bet you have the neatest stitching!
@@Evelyn__Wood sort of, it is just really difficult for me to not try to "restich" when my stitch is not having the perfect "seam allowance" or stitch length 😅
Not Me 😂😂 you’re funny!
How does it feel, stitching human skin?
Should be perfect for this!
wonderful!!! Sounds like just the right time! It's good to set aside time each week for learning/making/ you time! 😄
I’n ready to join.
I've been seeing since the late 50's learned on a Singer treadle
Soon! xx
@@Evelyn__Wood that sounds great!!! :)
I bought a new sewing machine for my granddaughter and want to have time in the future to be able to show her how to sew
That's so nice!!
I want to learn pattern makeing
You’re so cute in that outfit.
Aww thanks!! I wore it to my runway show and thought it deserved another wear for a special video! ❤
😄 Tredles are great!! Only that some have no reverse!
I'm interested in menswear. Is dressmaker a broad term, or do you literally mean making dresses?
Good question! All the principles of sewing are the same for either, it's the same skills used, just different fitting on bodies (obviously) and some finishes tend to suit menswear better than womens wear. But as long as you can see the difference yourself, you can just use the skills you learn and translate it to menswear, as you would interpret those skills to achieve any personal style you want to create! (as everything is shown on women's wear, but all dresses!) If you have any other questions feel free to email at info@evelynwood.com.au I think you will still find the school very useful! 😀
I need help putting the collar with interfacing.
Where could I check out the free crash course?
you can enroll in the free class at www.vintagesewingschool.com 😊
I put the washing on , started sewing and oh dear forgot all about the washing lol
I’m new to you but I love your TH-cam and want to join your school and I see your very active with your communication so I was just wondering like in your school before I start do you learn litterally everything down to sketching like can you be more detailed or is that on the website
Can you teach me how to sew a straight Line?
Evelyn Wood oh perfect!! 😍😍 I can’t wait to get started as soon as I get my mitts on my new machine!!
Yay!!! There's plenty of classes to watch and prepare yourself!
