I remember trying to rush back to a friend of mine, while he piloted an Archer, as several light mechs were rushing him. I tried to get him on comms, but all I got was "BRING IT YOU LITTLE SH*TS!!!". Got there, he was barely hanging on, but all that was left was a half a Commando, limping away in fear. A beast to never under estimate, the Archer.
Everyone thinks "Oh, it's just a fire support 'mech. Rush in close and it'll be helpless." No one ever remembers "Hey, those are some big ol' battle fists that thing's got" until it's too late. Then there's the fact that half of its close range support weapons face its rear, so you're getting tagged one way or the other.
As a Catapult pilot, I'd like to point out how most Mechwarriors who talk smack about fire support guys wouldn't be around to do it if it wasn't for one of us watching your backs.
My favorite flavor text for an Archer variant is the hero mech Agincourt in MW5 mercenaries. While they were checking out the cockpit they found a sticky note on the weapons console that stated "the kitchen sink"
I like the Archer and I like the Catapult. I don't care what people say about Missile Boats or their pilots. I will gladly accept them as my back line while I try to get to the thick of it in my favorite mech. The Black Knight. An Archer behind me will make sure that I will have very soft targets when I enter the engagement. And I am thankful for that.
In HBS and in MW5, I have an Archer named, "SRMpuncher". A heavy mech charging into SRM range and then continuing to jump jet into punching range might not be the smartest play, but it's certainly the most fun.
An SRM Archer is how I earned my Ace of Spades achievement in MWO (live match, too, none of that "everybody but me disconnected" crap that saw most of the extant Death Stars being unlocked). I think it says a lot that so many of the greatest Mercenary commanders roll in an Archer. It has the primary payload to let you sit back and intervene pretty much anywhere on a tactical battle grid, and the armor and close-in lasers (and battle fists) to defend yourself if enemy headhunters get a little too feisty. Of all the classic missile boats (Archer, Catapult, Trebuchet, Longbow), I think that the Archer is the one I'd most prefer to drive.
Agreed! A missile boat that can defend itself in close-quarters is a wonderful and oft-overlooked role in most groups I've run with or against. I've heard a lot of people criticize the Archer for its heat issues, but that's only an issue because its missiles and lasers aren't meant to be used simultaneously. At long range, it can out-perform Catapults as fire support, and when enemies close in, it is stronger at point-defense with the same laser loadout _plus_ big, punchy fists. But still, I get why Catapults are more common/popular. They're cheap, adaptable, and look cool.
My MWO days in the Archer could sum up as...Most of the time, I'll be stuck in maps that are surprisingly LRM unfriendly but I'm too much of a stubborn fool to just switch to SRMs. I'll straight up brawl with exploding death boomsticks at the most minimum ranges if I gotta. Though that one moment where a teammate fires a narc in the map turns our LRM boats into a cheat code was magical (4-5 kills...Like god damn).
I only ever got 5 kills in a match once. In a Dervish. Stock loadout with DHS, Endo-Steel, and a Light Engine for more ammo and armor. My last two kills were purely clean-uo work with the lasers and SRMs. That being said, my Archer was a nasty piece of work similarly equipped, but I added the Artemis IV to my LRM20s. Always waited until I had direct line of sight. It locked fast, and it hit hard. Still one of my highest kill counts, rivaled only by my very custom Timber Wolf.
@@WolfHreda my ARC-2R has Endo-Steel, ER-ML on the arms each, a tag, and Artemis Systems LRM-20s. The key to dealing with an archer is to keep in a very specific range, too close for the LRMs, but too far for it to charge and punch you in the face. Maintaining this sweetspot requires good maneuverability and control. DON'T get cocky and think once you are in the LRM minimum range that it's basically a free kill. Imagine this; the missiles that were being deployed against mechs had such incredible payloads, they were essentially mini-nukes, and so they would not only severely damage the surrounding area, and populace, they would also cause a mech's reactor to go critical, causing even more destruction.
